The Evolution Of Stoicism: An Overview Of Prominent Features And Discussions In Modern Stoicism, Christopher Sanchez
The Evolution Of Stoicism: An Overview Of Prominent Features And Discussions In Modern Stoicism, Christopher Sanchez
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This thesis project is an overview of the philosophy of Stoicism and its history, including research on prominent features and discussions in contemporary Stoicism. Stoicism today, known as “Modern Stoicism” or “contemporary Stoicism,” has undergone a recent revival in interest, leading to a new wave of academic and popular study. One purpose of this project is to investigate why and how this resurgence of Stoicism took place; I argue that one primary cause of the resurgence and manifestation of Modern Stoicism is a characteristic of accessibility in Stoic philosophy. This accessibility allows for an exponential growth of interaction with Stoic …

Discordium: Existentialism And The Metapsychology Of Reality, Schyler Richards
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to introduce a phenomenological theory wherein the problem of disharmony, or what can also be viewed as the problem of reality, can be understood and, insofar as it is possible, resolved. I will attempt here to develop my theory of the phenomenon in terms of its relation to nine other concepts: reality, appearance, experience, the idea, essence, nature, existence, the will, and the psyche or “mind.” In the process, I will provide a general explanation of how my theory of the phenomenon is informed …
The Efficacy Of Finetuning Large Language Models For Interpersonal Conflict Resolution, Matthew Boraske
The Efficacy Of Finetuning Large Language Models For Interpersonal Conflict Resolution, Matthew Boraske
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Since its introduction in 2017, the transformer architecture has revolutionized natural language processing, leading to the development of large language models (LLMs). Encoder-decoder transformers excel at tasks requiring deep understanding, such as summarization and question-answering. Decoder-only variants have been optimized for generating coherent, extended texts.
Despite their success in deterministic tasks like translation, LLMs have been less explored in ambiguous tasks such as interpersonal conflict resolution. This study addresses this gap by evaluating LLMs on four new datasets derived from the "Am I the A**hole" (AITA) subreddit, featuring discussions of interpersonal conflicts. These datasets challenge models with real-world data including …
Screentime At Bedtime Relates To Lower Performance On Self-Regulatory Tasks For Young Children Facing Economic Hardship, Krista Donahue
Screentime At Bedtime Relates To Lower Performance On Self-Regulatory Tasks For Young Children Facing Economic Hardship, Krista Donahue
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Given the prevalence of screentime, its impact on child development has become a question of key concern for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, as well as parents. Recent attention has focused specifically on the potential negative effects of screentime on young children’s development of self-regulatory capacities. These negative effects of screentime could be particularly detrimental for children in poverty, who face stressors and forms of environmental adversity that can compromise self-regulatory development. The present study examines the relationship between screentime at bedtime and the inhibitory control aspect of young children’s self-regulation. Participants included 144 children ages of 3-5 years old who …
Awakening To The Politics Of Consumption: A Qualitative Study Of Politicized Consumerism As Social Identity, Julia Belmiro
Awakening To The Politics Of Consumption: A Qualitative Study Of Politicized Consumerism As Social Identity, Julia Belmiro
West Chester University Master’s Theses
This qualitative study examines the influence of politicized consumerism on individual social identity through a social psychological perspective. Drawing from Tajfel and Turner’s Social Identity Model (1979) and Cross’s model of Black Identity (1991), we explored politicized consumption as a form of identity through the voices of consumers. Using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006), we analyzed thirty-seven survey respondents’ descriptions of their types of politicized consumption choices, factors contributing to their “awakening” to consumer politicization, the integration of these choices into their identity, and whether they viewed politicized consumption as a mechanism for social change. Participants in our sample …
Thought Control Mediates The Relation Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptoms In Undergraduates, Alex Elnashar
Thought Control Mediates The Relation Between Adverse Childhood Experiences And Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptoms In Undergraduates, Alex Elnashar
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Purpose: Body dysmorphia (BDD) has been shown to possibly result from multiple environmental factors. However, the exact mechanism by which these environmental factors play a role has yet to be examined. The purpose of the current study is to examine the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and body dysmorphia symptoms through maladaptive thought control as a mediator.
Method: The current study collected data from 127 undergraduate students aged 18-25. A survey was given with questionnaires assessing demographics such as age, sex, and gender, as well as the frequency of ACEs, BDD symptoms, and obsessional beliefs. Pearson’s correlation analysis was …
Renewable Energy Stocks' Performance And Climate Risk: An Empirical Analysis, Lingyu Li, Xianrong Zheng, Shuxi Wang
Renewable Energy Stocks' Performance And Climate Risk: An Empirical Analysis, Lingyu Li, Xianrong Zheng, Shuxi Wang
Information Technology & Decision Sciences Faculty Publications
This article studies the relationship between renewable energy stocks’ performance and climate risk. It shows that publicly held renewable energy stocks underperform as a reaction to climate policy information releases, modeled by feed-in tariff (FIT) legislation announcements. The study examined stock price behaviors 2 days before and 30 days after FIT policy announcements. The stock sample used in the study has 3702 firm-day combinations, which included 180 cleantech firms and 32 events from 2007 to 2017. Based on the residual analysis of the sample’s abnormal return, it indicated that the FIT announcements are associated with significant declines in returns. The …
The Manifestation Of Elementary Teachers’ Mathematical Identities: An Explanatory Mixed Methods Study, Kyle Brun
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
In the most simplistic form, mathematical identities manifest in the statements, “I am good at math” or “I am not good at math”. Once established, individuals’ identities influence how they interact and approach mathematical problem-solving (Bishop, 2012; Boaler, 2013; Boaler & Selling, 2017). The purpose of this mixed-method explanatory sequential study is to explore a deeper understanding of how elementary teachers’ mathematical identities influence their beliefs about effective math instruction. Utilizing an explanatory sequential mixed-method design, a questionnaire was used for the initial quantitative analysis of teachers' mathematical identities. Analysis of survey submissions identified three unique mathematical identity profiles. Two …
Can Machines Commit Crimes Under U.S. Antitrust Laws?, Aslihan Asil, Thomas G. Wollmann
Can Machines Commit Crimes Under U.S. Antitrust Laws?, Aslihan Asil, Thomas G. Wollmann
The University of Chicago Business Law Review
Generative artificial intelligence is being rapidly deployed for corporate tasks including pricing. Suppose one of these machines communicates with the pricing manager of a competing firm, proposes to collude, receives assent, and raises price. Is this a crime under U.S. antitrust laws, and, if so, who is liable? Based on the observed behavior of the most widely adopted large language model, we argue that this conduct is imminent, satisfies the requirements for agreement and intent under Section 1 of the Sherman Act, and could confer criminal liability to both firms as well as the pricing manager of the competing firm.
Corporate Governance And Risk-Taking: A Statistical Approach, Steven L. Schwarcz
Corporate Governance And Risk-Taking: A Statistical Approach, Steven L. Schwarcz
The University of Chicago Business Law Review
Because prudent corporate governance often requires managers to take risks based on statistically expected outcomes, corporate failures that have a small but finite chance of occurring cannot always be prevented. This Article makes three related claims about risk-taking in corporate governance.
This Article’s first claim is that managers should not automatically be presumed to be at fault for corporate failures that result from risk-taking decisions based on statistical methodologies that reasonably justify the decisions ex ante. Conceptually, the business judgment rule should protect corporate managers for engaging in a reasonable decision-making process, including one that is statistically based. Jurisdictionally, however, …

Doing More With Less: State Public Health Emergency Powers Post-Pandemic, Kelly J. Deere
Doing More With Less: State Public Health Emergency Powers Post-Pandemic, Kelly J. Deere
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
Three years after COVID-19 arrived in the United States, many governors and public health officials are equipped with fewer—not more—public health emergency powers than at the start of the pandemic. This may seem counterintuitive, considering that this virus has killed more than 1.1 million Americans and counting. While public health emergency powers were stripped on the federal, state, and local level, this loss is most acutely felt at the state executive level. Some state legislatures passed laws banning state and local governments from implementing a mask or vaccine mandate, while others amended their state emergency disaster statutes to limit the …
Rethinking Foundations And Analyzing New Conflicts: Teaching Law After Dobbs, Nicole Huberfeld, Linda C. Mcclain, Aziza Ahmed
Rethinking Foundations And Analyzing New Conflicts: Teaching Law After Dobbs, Nicole Huberfeld, Linda C. Mcclain, Aziza Ahmed
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
This Article draws on our diverse and complementary areas of scholarly expertise and teaching experiences across law school and public health curricula to offer a multidisciplinary model for teaching in a variety of courses after Dobbs. Teaching reproductive rights and justice poses extensive challenges in the wake of Dobbs’ overruling Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, upending a half century of precedents protecting a constitutional right to abortion, and returning the issue to “the people”—and the states. This Article offers theoretical and pedagogical perspectives on teaching courses in Reproductive Rights and Justice, as well as relevant …

Teaching Dobbs As A Contemporary Case Study Of Federalism In Action And An Introduction To The Cross-Disciplinary Nature Of The Law, Antonia A.B. Miceli
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
With its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the U.S. Supreme Court ended the constitutional right to an abortion, overturning Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, and returned the issue of legal access to an abortion to the states. Prior to Dobbs, reproductive rights and the right to an abortion were firmly situated within the substantive due process and fundamental rights coverage of law school constitutional law courses. But this coverage often falls late in, or completely outside the scope of, the required constitutional law curriculum at U.S. law schools. This Article offers the …
Regulating The Pains Of Racial Discrimination, Alice Abrokwa
Regulating The Pains Of Racial Discrimination, Alice Abrokwa
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
This essay examines the relationship between experiences of racial discrimination and pain, assessing how social, legal, and regulatory responses to racial pain in the United States can enable further discrimination and compound the underlying pain. The essay articulates a conceptual framework for understanding this relationship, contending that: racial discrimination can contribute to pain severity and sensitivity; patients of color seeking pain relief are subject to heavy social scrutiny, including from their medical providers; social scrutiny and regulatory restriction together limit patients’ lawful avenues for pain relief, including their access to controlled substances that are used to manage pain; patients who …
Desegregating Behavioral Health Care For Medicaid Youth, Caroline M. Marsh, Valarie K. Blake
Desegregating Behavioral Health Care For Medicaid Youth, Caroline M. Marsh, Valarie K. Blake
Saint Louis University Journal of Health Law & Policy
The Supreme Court held in Olmstead v. L.C. ex rel. Zimring, 527 U.S. 581, 581 (1999) that it is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) for states to rely on institutionalized care when home and community-based care is more appropriate. Yet, over a quarter of a century later, states persist in institutionalizing youth experiencing behavioral health disabilities. This article explores Olmstead’s impact thus far on deinstitutionalization of youth behavioral health care, and the limits of Olmstead as a vehicle for lasting change. We argue that, although recent enforcement actions reflect critical change, Olmstead enforcements alone cannot succeed …
The Behavioral Origins Of Phylogenic Responses And Ontogenic Habits, W. David Stahlman, Kenneth J. Leising
The Behavioral Origins Of Phylogenic Responses And Ontogenic Habits, W. David Stahlman, Kenneth J. Leising
Psychological Science Articles
An examination of innate behavior and its possible origins suggests parallels with the formation of habitual behavior. Inflexible but adaptive responses-innate reflexive behavior, Pavlovian conditioned responses, and operant habits-may have evolved from variable behavior in phylogeny and ontogeny. This form of "plasticity-first" scientific narrative was unpopular post-Darwin but has recently gained credibility in evolutionary biology. The present article seeks to identify originating events and contingencies contributing to such inflexible but adaptive behavior at both phylogenic and ontogenic levels of selection. In ontogeny, the development of inflexible performance (i.e., habit) from variable operant behavior is reminiscent of the genetic accommodation of …
Student-Teacher Alliance Buffers Against The Impact Of Moderate Math Anxiety On Course Performance Among College Students, Erin N. Palmwood
Student-Teacher Alliance Buffers Against The Impact Of Moderate Math Anxiety On Course Performance Among College Students, Erin N. Palmwood
Psychological Science Articles
Students with math anxiety experience low self-efficacy and high levels of distress when asked to approach math tasks and concepts, which often results in poor course performance. Despite the wealth of research on this construct, relatively little is known about how math anxiety impacts math achievement in college-aged students or what types of classroom-based processes might buffer against this harmful effect. The present study therefore examined the student-teacher alliance as a potential buffer against the detrimental effect of math anxiety on course grades in a sample of non-STEM college students enrolled in a required mathematics course. Students completed questionnaires regarding …

Complexity, Grouping, And Similarity: Effects On Numerosity Estimations, Keighly Harris
Theses
This study looked at the effects of visual features like complexity, grouping, and similarity on numerosity estimations. I hypothesized that complex visual stimuli would be more difficult to accurately estimate than simple visual stimuli. Additionally, I hypothesized that stimuli that were visually similar or displayed in spread out, distributed patterns would have more accurate estimations compared to visually random or closely grouped stimuli. Lastly, this study was designed to assess the combined effects of these visual features on numerosity estimation accuracy. Participants were asked to briefly look at images displaying groups of items containing these visual features, estimate the number …

Council Of Canadians With Disabilities: Another Reminder To Resolve Cases On The Merits, Gerard J. Kennedy
Council Of Canadians With Disabilities: Another Reminder To Resolve Cases On The Merits, Gerard J. Kennedy
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In British Columbia (Attorney General) v. Council of Canadians with Disabilities, Wagner C.J.C., for a unanimous Supreme Court of Canada, granted public interest standing to the Council of Canadians with Disabilities to challenge the constitutionality of provisions of British Columbia statutes that authorize physicians to subject patients with mental disabilities to psychiatric treatment without their consent or the consent of a substitute decision-maker. In many ways, the decision is simply a doubling-down on Cromwell J.’s unanimous decision a decade earlier in Canada (Attorney General) v. Downtown Eastside Sex Workers United Against Violence Society. This paper explains the holdings in Council …

A Lifeline During Custodial Interrogations? The Right To Counsel And Reflections On R. V. Dussault And R. V. Lafrance, Amar Khoday
The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference
In 2022, the Supreme Court of Canada issued two judgments with respect to the constitutional right to counsel: R. v. Dussault and R. v. Lafrance. This right is located in section 10(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Specifically, both decisions concern an accused’s right to reconsult counsel in the context of custodial police interrogations. Further to earlier Supreme Court jurisprudence regarding an individual’s constitutional right to counsel, an accused is permitted to consult a lawyer prior to police questioning. Police must refrain from questioning the individual until that individual has had an opportunity to consult a lawyer. …
