Academic Detailing As A Health Information Technology Implementation Method: Supporting The Design And Implementation Of An Emergency Department-Based Clinical Decision Support Tool To Prevent Future Falls, Hanna J Barton, Apoorva Maru, Margaret A Leaf, Daniel J Hekman, Douglas A Wiegmann, Manish N Shah, Brian W Patterson
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: Clinical decision support (CDS) tools that incorporate machine learning-derived content have the potential to transform clinical care by augmenting clinicians' expertise. To realize this potential, such tools must be designed to fit the dynamic work systems of the clinicians who use them. We propose the use of academic detailing-personal visits to clinicians by an expert in a specific health IT tool-as a method for both ensuring the correct understanding of that tool and its evidence base and identifying factors influencing the tool's implementation.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess academic detailing as a method for simultaneously ensuring the correct …

Background Recovery colleges provide personalised educational mental health support for people who self-refer. The research evidence supporting them is growing, with key components and the positive experiences of attendees reported. However, the quantitative outcome evidence and impact on economic outcomes is limited. Aims To evaluate the impact of attending a UK recovery college for students who receive a full educational intervention. Method This is a pre- and post-intervention study, with predominantly quantitative methods. Participants recruited over an 18-month period (01.2020-07.2021) completed self-reported well-being (Short Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (SWEMWBS)) and recovery (Process of Recovery (QPR)) surveys, and provided details and …
A Multimodal Study Of Augmented Reality In The Architectural Design Studio, Alejandro Veliz Reyes
A Multimodal Study Of Augmented Reality In The Architectural Design Studio, Alejandro Veliz Reyes
School of Art, Design and Architecture
Architectural design representations comprise physical (models, drawings) and digital media (3D models). Multimodal combinations of physical and digital representations are commonplace in professional contexts such as design reviews or building sites, and ‘making sense’ of these assemblies requires complex socio-cognitive processes and professional expertise. In that context, this paper follows a ‘sense-making’ approach, and theorises the impact of multimodal representations in architectural design tutorials. Hybrid physical/digital representations have been built using Augmented Reality (AR) and utilised in dialogues between students’ groups and design tutors. Design tutorials have been documented through video, workshops, observational notes and interviews to generate a grounded …

Research suggests a surge in the number of students attending a college or university. However, whether first-generation students complete their degree program remains a problem. Approximately thirty-three percent of first-generation students who began postsecondary education in 2003–04 left postsecondary education without earning a postsecondary credential. The current study investigated the psychometric properties of a revised version of a measure of academic, research, and social self-efficacy. Specifically, a sample of 403 Mturk participants ’completed the Graduate Education Self-Efficacy Scale (GESES). There were three primary research questions: 1) For a revised version of the GESES, is the original three-factor structure supported, 2) …

Burnout Symptoms Among Millennial Teachers In India: The Efficacy Of The Emotional Self-Care Online Intervention Program (Escoip), Joby Thomas, Marc Eric S. Reyes
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
The experiences of millennial teachers—currently comprising the majority of the teaching workforce—have gained attention in scholarly research. The phenomenon of teacher burnout, in particular, has gained greater attention in recent years due to its grave impact on the educational system and the well-being of teachers. Thus, developing an effective online intervention program is crucial to alleviate and avoid burnout among millennial teachers. Using Conklin’s program development model, which involves three phases, (1) planning, (2) design and implementation, and (3) evaluation and program validation, this study investigated the effectiveness of the Emotional Self-Care Online Intervention Program (ESCOIP) in treating burnout symptoms …

Objects Are Subordinate To Spatial Features As Cues For Control, Abhishek Dey
Objects Are Subordinate To Spatial Features As Cues For Control, Abhishek Dey
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
It is well documented that people can engage in flexible adjustments of attention using context cues from the environment. The most prolific cue used to assess such context-specific attentional control in the literature has been location (or spatial features). Context-specific attentional control using object features has been less well researched and some of the most conclusive evidence of object-based attentional control comes from designs where location and spatial features cannot be used to guide attentional control. Across five experiments, I investigate the interplay between object and spatial features in their usefulness to guide attentional control when both are available as …

Three Essays On Education Policy, Intergroup Relations, And Human Capital Accumulation, Wai Meng Jeremy Siow
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
The impact of education on fostering the development of human capital and molding sociopolitical attitudes from an early age is a well-explored topic in the field of social sciences. This dissertation takes a broader approach by delving into the consequences of two critical components of the education system: (1) the language used for instruction, and (2) citizenship education. To accomplish this, I employ a combination of observational and experimental research methods to disentangle the causal effects of these educational factors within the contexts of Malaysia and Singapore. Chapter 2 delves into the ramifications of adopting a non-native language of instruction …

Student Scholar Showcase
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between personality traits, namely narcissism, entitlement, empathy, and a desire for fame, and a preference for public praise in a student population. Past research has shown that those who are higher in narcissism are also higher in entitlement and that these rates have been rising with future generations. Past research has also indicated a negative relationship between narcissistic tendencies and empathy, inferring that those higher in narcissism tend to score lower on empathy measures. In this study, undergraduate students were surveyed online to determine scores on four measures of traits …

Demons 101: A Comparative Understanding Of Ancient Near Eastern Demons, Christopher Dykes
Liberty University Research Week
The 2012 international conference "Evil Spirits, Monsters, and Benevolent Protectors: Demonology in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia" served as a catalyst, igniting a renewed interest in supernatural beings. Among the topics covered, one worth exploring more is the taxonomical issues in studying ancient conceptions of demons. This paper seeks to develop a better understanding of the differences between demons in the ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian context. One source being the Udug-Hul incantation tablets from Mesopotamia, the other being the Leiden Magical Papyri from Egypt. Both these texts are medical texts to treat demon caused illnesses. This study seeks to understand the …

Media Impact On Stereotypes: How The Media Feeds The Bias Beast, Emma Campbell
Liberty University Research Week
This project examines the ways in which news media perpetuates inaccurate stereotypes, different methods of diminishing stereotyping on a psychological level, and proposes an adaptation of these strategies to be applied in the news media industry. It is well documented that the media industry frequently feeds stereotypic images rather than diminishing them, even if unintentionally. Stereotypic portrayals in the media can have real-world impacts on the people or groups unfairly treated. These impacts range from influencing interpersonal interactions to influencing public policy that affects those subjected to stereotyping. Existing research has primarily examined the psychological processes of stereotyping and how …

The Trauma-Informed Church: An Investigative Study On Congregational Community In Trauma Recovery, Joel Ogle
Liberty University Research Week
This study explores the importance and impact of congregational community within the framework of the local church in supporting individuals through trauma recovery. Through the application of Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) (2014) key principles of trauma-informed practice into current empirical literature, a faith centered approach is identified and analyzed (Singer, 2024). This research addresses important psychological principles such as trauma response and trauma-informed care. Studies such as Simpson (2021) and ter Kuile and Ehring (2014) show that a majority of pastoral care revolves around trauma issues. Therefore, it is imperative that the local church structure ministry …

This presentation examines the power and impact of the propaganda of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime through a variety of methods that were implemented via the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda. Shortly after seizing power in 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Regime quickly established the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda under the leadership of Joseph Goebbels. The Ministry created a propaganda program which was designed to appeal to the sense of national identity or nationalism, the aspirations, and the fear and weaknesses of various groups of the population. To ensure their message was being …

Shifting Of The Nerves: The Evolution Of Shell Shock And Its Treatment In The United Kingdom, Dylan Cumbo
Liberty University Research Week
This paper looks at the evolution of the British understanding of a new Psycho-neurological condition assigned the common name of ‘Shell Shock.’ I argue that the understanding of Shell Shock within the United Kingdom underwent a gradual evolution due to influences from both the British military and medical personnel. Conditions similar to Shell Shock have been observed throughout history, with the first modern interpretation appearing shortly after the American Civil War. Despite this, medical practitioners within the United Kingdom held onto their older interpretations of psychological medicine. Thus, Shell Shock came as a surprise to those who first witnessed it. …

Improper Divulgence: How Distrust And Poor Reporting Influenced Civilians Views Of The Three Mile Island Incident, Dylan Cumbo
Liberty University Research Week
This paper looks at how the media impacted the civilian opinion of the United States’ population on the Three Mile Island Incident. I argue that the media outlets reporting on the nuclear incident negatively impacted the public’s perception of the incident, making the disaster appear far worse than what was actually happening. Occurring on March 28, 1979, the meltdown of reactor number two at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania, was the worst nuclear incident in United States history. Prior to the meltdown, United States citizens already had exposure to the pros and cons of radiation. Influenced by their experiences with nuclear …

This paper explores the response to soldiers needing rehabilitation in World War One and how convalescent facilities impacted the everyday lives of injured men, nurses, and military medicine. During the Great War, there was an influx of the diversity of injuries due to the expanse of biological and machine warfare. Recognizing that field hospitals were insufficient, England’s War Office executed a plan to requisition public facilities and use volunteer forces not only to heal English men but soldiers from across the world. This paper establishes the context for the convalescing system in England and then its accommodation and improvisation for …
The Art Of The Sword And Sand: Roman Gladiators And Man’S Fascination With Martial Entertainment, Ethan Pierce
The Art Of The Sword And Sand: Roman Gladiators And Man’S Fascination With Martial Entertainment, Ethan Pierce
Liberty University Research Week
The ancient Romans were fascinated by spectacles of blood on the sands of the arena. Thousands of citizens flocked from all corners of the empire to see gladiators test their mettle against beasts and men alike. Films and popular culture have portrayed the arena as a ruthless blood bowl that one could only leave as a bloody pulp or a savage victor. While by modern standards, the arena can be seen as quite brutal and dangerous, this image of the games leaves an incomplete picture in the minds of many. Several misconceptions, born from popular media, ignore the scale of …

This paper addresses the 2014 Yazidi Genocide and focuses on the religious and psychological manifestations of the beliefs and circumstances upheld by ISIS captors and their captive Yazidi women, conversely. In 2014, ISIS slaughtered and enslaved a religious minority in Iraq, the Yazidi people. While the Yazidi men were slaughtered throughout various locations of the Sinjar region, their women, especially beautiful youths retaining virgin status, were shipped to slave markets, and sold. In captivity, each woman’s experiences highlighted stark truths about their captor’s religious fervor and sexual desires amidst their own willpower to escape. This paper argues that, though divergent …

Jungian Dream Analysis As Literary Theory: An Unexplored Route To Understanding The Unconscious Psyche’S Impact On Literature, Kaytlin Masters
Liberty University Research Week
The fields of literary criticism and psychology have a longstanding history of intersection, with prominent schools of psychological thought being preeminent resources in the literary critic’s toolbox. In conjunction, literature aids in the expansion of the field of psychology by providing material which can be distilled down to raw data used to interpret and further the understanding of the human psyche. Two literary theories that marry these disciplines are Freudian dream analysis (psychological theory) and Jungian archetype theory. I propose a previously overlooked psychological method in the field of literary criticism which expands on these ideas and acts as a …
