An Exploratory Comparison Of The Impact Of Covid-19 On American And Chinese College Student Lives, Arvind Agrawal, Alan Hamlin, Steve Barney, Yongchuan Shi

Mountain Plains Journal of Business and Technology

US and Chinese students in their home countries rated their life experiences since the advent of Covid-19 on various aspects of their lives, including academic performance, social life, and emotional, financial, and physical well-being. Input was also received about how Covid-19 has affected their communication, career planning, and post-graduate goals.

To assess the impacts of these changes on college students, the authors created a questionnaire to ask students about their perceptions of these COVID-related impacts on their personal lives. The survey had 56 questions, with 1580 students responding, providing both objective input and subjective comments. Due to the volume of …

Quetiapine Induced Agitation In A Hospice Veteran: A Case Report, Colton Kinderknecht, Kevin Mathews, Elizabeth Kane

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Quetiapine is an atypical antipsychotic that is used in many clinical scenarios; it has been approved and has shown to be effective in the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar symptoms. Additionally, it has several off-label uses, including the treatment of insomnia. In this case report, an elderly veteran was given quetiapine as a sleep aid. After the first dose, he demonstrated severe agitation. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there have been limited reports of this reaction. Although there are limitations to this case report, it serves as a cautionary lesson when prescribing a medication like quetiapine and to …

Exploring Resilience Factors And Positive Development In Single-Parent Households, Valerie Gomez Apr 2024

Exploring Resilience Factors And Positive Development In Single-Parent Households, Valerie Gomez

Undergraduate Papers

Single-parent households are often viewed as a risky family context associated with children’s negative outcomes such as social difficulties, psychopathology, and lower academic performance. While single-parent households are becoming more common, particularly in the United States, not all children who grow up in single-parent households go on to develop negative outcomes. Prior studies have not clearly outlined whether there are child or family-level factors that are associated with positive outcomes in the context of single-parent households. This honors thesis explored whether chores, which may support children’s persistence and autonomy, are more common in single-parent households and whether they predict positive …

Management Of Keloid-Associated Pruritus With Topical Crisaborole 2% Ointment: A Case Report, Daniel A. Nguyen, Elizabeth Thai Ms, Stephen E. Weis

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

The pathophysiology of keloid formation is poorly understood, and current treatments, including intralesional corticosteroids, cryotherapy, and surgery, are often associated with high resistance to treatment and recurrence. The multifactorial pathogenesis of keloid formation suggests that aberrant inflammatory cytokine signaling associated with keratinocyte dysregulation may contribute to keloid-associated pruritus.

Case Presentation

In this paper, we report 2 cases of keloid-associated pruritus that were successfully treated with topical crisaborole 2% ointment, a phosphodiesterase 4 (PDE4) inhibitor. Both patients had previously undergone multiple unsuccessful treatments before being treated with crisaborole 2% ointment. In both cases, the patients experienced complete relief of pruritus …

Philosophy In Science: Can Philosophers Of Science Permeate Through Science And Produce Scientific Knowledge?, Thomas Pradeu, Maël Lemoine, Mahdi Khelfaoui, Yves Gingras Apr 2024

Philosophy In Science: Can Philosophers Of Science Permeate Through Science And Produce Scientific Knowledge?, Thomas Pradeu, Maël Lemoine, Mahdi Khelfaoui, Yves Gingras

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

Most philosophers of science do philosophy ‘on’ science. By contrast, others do philosophy ‘in’ science (PinS), that is, they use philosophical tools to address scientific problems and to provide scientifically useful proposals. Here, we consider the evidence in favour of a trend of this nature. We proceed in two stages. First, we identify relevant authors and articles empirically with bibliometric tools, given that PinS would be likely to infiltrate science and thus to be published in scientific journals (‘intervention’), cited in scientific journals (‘visibility’), and sometimes recognized as a scientific result by scientists (‘contribution’). We show that many central figures …

Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan

Education is the main key to human resource development, enabling individuals to improve their abilities and skills in the formal and non-formal domains, compete, and develop potential in the world of work. However, significant challenges arise for higher education graduates, where some of them experience open unemployment because they have not been fully absorbed in the labor market. This research is focused on the concept of human resource development inclusiveness in the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesian Higher Education. This study used a literature study approach, referring to previously published research. The analysis was conducted to explore the extent …

Who Authors Social Science? Demographics And The Production Of Knowledge, Jeffrey W. Lockhart, Molly M. King, Christin Munsch

Sociology

Author demographics are of key epistemic importance in science—shaping the approaches to and contents of research—especially in social scientific knowledge production, yet we know very little about who produces social scientific publications. We fielded an original demographic survey of nearly 20,000 sociology, economics, and communication authors in the Web of Science from 2016–2020. Our results include not only details about gender and race/ethnicity but also the first descriptive statistics on social science authors’ sexuality, disability, parental education, and employment characteristics. We find authorship in the social sciences looks very different from other measures of disciplinary membership like who holds PhDs …

No Self: Consciousness, Life, And Value, Jiawei Ma Apr 2024

No Self: Consciousness, Life, And Value, Jiawei Ma

Philosophy Honors Projects

The problem of personal identity has been an ongoing debate in the history of philosophy for thousands of years. This thesis examines personal identity from a variety of philosophical approaches. I begin with the historical assumption made by Descartes and Locke that people have a 'self' because they have successive consciousness over time. I argue that no 'self' exists as a coherent entity because consciousness, which makes up the self, exists as separate pieces. By exploring the weakness of defining the self as consciousness, I argue that society is the efficient cause and final cause of personal identity. By studying …

How And Why Foster Care Impacts Maltreated Youths' School Performance, Mallory Constantine Apr 2024

How And Why Foster Care Impacts Maltreated Youths' School Performance, Mallory Constantine

Lincy Institute Events

Youth mistreated within the foster care system are more likely to miss school as compared to non-maltreated peers. A single report of child maltreatment has a rapid and negative effect on school attendance and causes serious, long-term effects on school performance. A report of maltreatment substantiated by the department of family and child services removes a youth from a foster home and places the child in an alternative setting. These disruptions in foster care often result in additional problems with school behavior, achievement, and attendance. This lecture will explore how disruptions in foster care affect school behavior and performance and …

Polygamy In The Context Of Family Law And The Crisis Of Civic Responsibility, Mirna Taufik, Nina Damayanti, Giyanto Giyanto

Jurnal Civics: Media Kajian Kewarganegaraan

Polygamy among teenagers is an uncommon phenomenon in Indonesia, but it is prevalent in Musi Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. There are underlying factors contributing to this concerning trend among teenagers, which worries parents and continues to rise annually due to its potential impact on a child's future. Unfortunately, families often feel compelled to accept early polygamous marriages due to concerns about family honor. Despite the strict process mandated by family law, societal attitudes undermine this, leading to significant risks for those involved. Furthermore, the government's influence in implementing effective measures seems limited, highlighting an apparent lapse in civic responsibility. Therefore, …

We collected data from 143 treatment-seeking adults with AUD. The final sample consisted of participants with baseline goals of controlled drinking and follow-up data (N = 25). Success for individuals with controlled drinking goals was not predicted by any of the variables studied in multiple regression analysis. Results of latent change score analyses indicate that participants of lower …
