In two studies, a 2 (prime: distinctiveness vs. inclusiveness) x 2 (message: competition vs. collaboration) ANOVA methodology was conducted on survey data. In Study 1, participants primed with distinctiveness (inclusiveness) and considering convenience products experienced an assimilation effect where they preferred competitive (collaborative) rivalry appeals. In Study 2, participants primed with distinctiveness (inclusiveness) and considering …

Columbine And The Myth Of The Juvenile Superpredator, Christopher M. Mosqueda Nov 2020

Columbine And The Myth Of The Juvenile Superpredator, Christopher M. Mosqueda

Theses and Dissertations

Mass media has great influence over its audience. When a sensational story hits the news waves, the general public's attention is instantly riveted to the television screen. News stories that involve the deaths of innocent people often create a culture of fear, fuel false narratives, and scatter misinformation. In fact, this culture of fear, coupled with misleading information, created the myth of the juvenile superpredator, a phrase coined by DiIulio in the early 1990s. The stereotyped superpredator was a homicidal, uncontrollable youth hiding within areas where crime and violence are rare. In particular, this myth was propagated following the massacre …

For Our Sakes: An Incarnational And Systemic Approach To The Challenge Of Poverty, Alan Parker Nov 2020

For Our Sakes: An Incarnational And Systemic Approach To The Challenge Of Poverty, Alan Parker

Faculty Works

How do Christians face the challenge of poverty? This paper proposes a grace-based approach to poverty. By recognizing our poverty and how God has shown grace to us, we are inspired to care for the poverty of others. The problem of the poor, which includes us, is not material poverty but broken relationships. Solving poverty requires that one enter into the world of the poor person and to see the richness that they have, even in their material poverty. The entire system of broken relationships must be repaired and the goal must be the restoration of shalom. We will therefore …

Impact Of A Dialogic Reading Intervention On The Effectiveness Of An Adaptive Magnitude Comparison Ebook For Improving Young Children’S Magnitude Comparison Skills, Patrick Ehrman, Mary Wagner Fuhs

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

Dialogic reading interventions have been used successfully to increase reading skills. This study aims to investigate whether a dialogic reading intervention will also assist children with spatial and numerical magnitude comparison skills learned through a novel adaptive number e-book designed to be read together by parents and children. This study proposes that a dialogic reading intervention will improve spatial and numerical magnitude comparison skills that will transfer to general math skills following the reading of an adaptive number e-book more so than reading without dialogic reading instructions. Additionally, there are predicted benefits for executive functioning skills and for improving parental …

The Relationship Of Classroom Variables And Academic Achievement Across The Preschool Year, Olivia Leblanc

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

Preschool education is designed to foster school readiness among three to five-year-old children before entering kindergarten. Past research suggests that elements of the classroom, such as quality of teacher-child interactions, can influence the development of academic and social skills during the preschool year. Utilizing data from a longitudinal correlational study, the current study investigates the relationship between classroom variables and academic achievement throughout the preschool year. The findings suggest that there is a significant relationship between classroom variables and student outcomes, which calls for further research investigating the importance of high-quality preschool programs for young children.

Research Questions:

  1. What is …

Content presented at the Roesch Social Sciences Symposium

The purpose of my internship was to gain advocacy experience in a political setting. I interacted with community members in Ohio’s 10th Congressional District including Montgomery, Greene, and Fayette counties.

Although the election did not provide us the results we had hoped to see, I took away some valuable experience in mobilizing the community to vote for issues that impact this district. Throughout this experience I learned more about civic engagement, public policy, and political activism. Additionally, I reflected the team’s norms of respect, transparency, trust, accountability, and ambition for progress.

Copyright And The Brain, Mark Bartholomew Nov 2020

Copyright And The Brain, Mark Bartholomew

Journal Articles

This Article exploresthe intersection of copyright law, aesthetic theory, and neuroscience. The current test for copyright infringement requires a court or jury to assess whether the parties’ works are “substantially similar” from the vantage point of the “ordinary observer. ”Embedded within this test are several assumptions about audiences and art. Brain science calls these assumptions into question. The substantial similarity test posits that aesthetic reactions are unmeasurable and uniform. In actuality, they can be quantified and vary depending on audience and artistic medium. Neuroscience has already reconfigured the law in many areas, from tort damages to the death penalty. Now …

Under Impact Of Non-Motor Vehicle Violation An Analysis On Vehicle Operation Efficiency, Sun Di, Zhou Jin, Sijia Liu, Xiaoming Zhang, Xueying Gao

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: In order to study the impact of non-motor vehicle violations on motor vehicle traffic efficiency at signalized intersections, the non-motor vehicle traffic behaviors are analyzed. An actual intersection is selected as study object, the main violation behaviors of on selected intersection are analyzed by using the linear regression model. For traffic light violation behavior of non-motor vehicles, the violation rate is modeled by using logistic model, and the results are analyzed. At the signal controlled intersection, non-motor vehicle violations affect the normal motor vehicles, and time is delayed. The delay time of motor vehicle under non-motor vehicle …
