Anxiety Or Advantage?: Detecting Malingered Symptoms In College Students Seeking Academic Accommodations, Samantha N. Dean
Anxiety Or Advantage?: Detecting Malingered Symptoms In College Students Seeking Academic Accommodations, Samantha N. Dean
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Academic accommodations support equitable access to education for students whose mental health conditions meaningfully impair academic performance. Concerns exist regarding the potential to exaggerate or fabricate anxiety symptoms. This study examined whether cognitive tasks can differentiate credible generalized anxiety from malingered anxiety among college students. Participants were classified into probable GAD, malingering anxiety, or low GA control groups using a structured diagnostic interview and self-report measure. Participants completed working memory tasks (1-back and 3-back), a modified emotional Stroop task, and symptom validity tests. Malingering and probable GAD groups reported comparable anxiety symptom endorsement and severity. Working memory accuracy did not …
Legal System Support Of Crime Survivors And Attitudes On Justice, Izabella Leblanc
Legal System Support Of Crime Survivors And Attitudes On Justice, Izabella Leblanc
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Researchers have demonstrated the impact of victimization on mental health, and survivor dissatisfaction with legal processes and services. Recent literature supports the efficacy of restorative justice programs that started in response to retributive justice and its inability to directly address survivor harm. Thus, the current study examined how crime survivors perceive legal system support and attitudes towards restorative justice, with an undergraduate sample recruited from UTC’s SONA system and an online cloud-survey sample. Participants completed a survey that asked about their victimization experience(s), and legal system and restorative justice attitudes. Analyses examined mean differences between non-victims and victims, and subjective …
Anxious Impairment: Exploring Executive Functions And Anxiety In College Students, Dawson C. Mathis
Anxious Impairment: Exploring Executive Functions And Anxiety In College Students, Dawson C. Mathis
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
College students are tasked with juggling a variety of responsibilities. To manage these responsibilities college students must rely on their executive functioning (EF). Executive function refers to cognitive processes that are used to set goals, make plans to achieve those goals, and shift between tasks when necessary. A large portion of college students report experiencing anxiety and anxiety has been theorized to negatively impact cognitive performance, generally. This study sought to explore the impact of anxiety on inhibition and vigilance performance. Participants’ anxiety scores significantly correlated with the number of omission errors made on the inhibition task. Participants also made …
Loneliness And Social Support In Shift Work Employees, Jacob Lamprecht
Loneliness And Social Support In Shift Work Employees, Jacob Lamprecht
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Loneliness, a discrepancy between the desired quantity and quality of one’s relationships and their current relationships, has been connected to increases in mortality, as well as lower job performance, reduced job satisfaction, and increased burnout. However more recent studies indicate that the recipient may not always perceive the support as beneficial, resulting in “unhelpful social support. The present study examined how helpful and unhelpful social support relate to loneliness among healthcare shift workers, a population that may be prone to fatigue and health risks. I hypothesized that helpful support would be negatively related to loneliness and that unhelpful support would …
Supervisor-Focused Impression Management And Social Undermining As Self-Enhancing Responses To Perceived Job Insecurity, J. Luke Wiley
Supervisor-Focused Impression Management And Social Undermining As Self-Enhancing Responses To Perceived Job Insecurity, J. Luke Wiley
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Job insecurity has become a more prevalent and harmful issue across many advanced economies. The present study was designed to investigate two ways in which employees may respond to perceived job insecurity. We hypothesized that employees experiencing job insecurity engage in impression management tactics directed at their supervisor (SFIM) or social undermining tactics directed at their coworkers. We further hypothesized that these processes or effects were moderated by employees’ core self-evaluations (CSE). Data were gathered through targeted sampling to workers in the federal government (Sample 1, N = 91), as well as convenience sampling (Sample 2, N = 146). Results …
Attention After Adversity: Examining Temperament As A Protective And Risk Factor, Claire N. Beach
Attention After Adversity: Examining Temperament As A Protective And Risk Factor, Claire N. Beach
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Attentional control (AC) is an executive function referring to the ability to attend to pertinent information in the face of distractions. Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are characterized by various forms of abuse and neglect experienced before the age of 18. Temperament is an early-appearing variation in attention-related self-regulation that is thought to be largely influenced by genetics. This study assessed the effect of ACEs on attentional control, the role of temperament as a protective/risk factor, and individual differences through eyetracking. Results showed no direct relationship between ACEs and attentional control, however, ACEs were consistently associated with higher negative affect and …
Personalized And Adaptive Therapeutic Music Generation From Biosignals Using Knowledge-Guided Multimodal Large Language Models, Amin Amiri
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Multimodal generative models are reshaping digital therapeutics by enabling real-time synthesis of personalized content aligned with a user’s physiological and affective state. However, existing systems remain fragmented across modalities and often lack a unified framework that can jointly represent biosignals, natural language intent, music, and video under long-context constraints. This dissertation presents an end-to-end multimodal large language model ecosystem for personalized therapeutic music generation that combines discrete tokenization, evidence-grounded reasoning, and stabilized preference alignment. At the representation layer, the dissertation develops a family of tokenizers that convert continuous biomedical and media signals into compact discrete sequences for transformer-based modeling. Harmonizer …
Investigating The Pursuit Of Prosocial Goals Among Neurodivergent Adults: A Naturalistic Prospective Memory Study, Benjamin L. Hicks
Investigating The Pursuit Of Prosocial Goals Among Neurodivergent Adults: A Naturalistic Prospective Memory Study, Benjamin L. Hicks
Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Neurodiversity refers to natural variations in neurological development and cognitive functioning. Individuals who diverge from typical developmental trajectories, commonly referred to as neurodivergent, often include those with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Neurodivergent adults have received empirical spotlight, particularly in lab-based paradigms, in the field of prospective memory (PM), defined as the ability to remember and carry out intentions in the future. The current study (N = 62) employed a 2 (Group: Neurotypical vs. Neurodivergent) X 2 (Goal Type: Prosocial vs. Self-Interested) mixed factor design examining the impact of prosocial motivation on everyday prospective memory performance between …
How Presentation Shapes Multisensory Category Learning, Hooman Main Amiri
How Presentation Shapes Multisensory Category Learning, Hooman Main Amiri
Master's Theses and Capstones
Category learning allows people to group complex sensory input into categories, helping them generalize knowledge from familiar exemplars to novel stimuli. In everyday life, categories are often learned from more than one sense, yet most prior work on category learning has focused on learning in a single sensory modality. Here, we asked whether the way category information is presented across modalities, simultaneously or separately, shapes multisensory category learning in adults. In Experiment 1, participants learned the categories with either simultaneous or separate presentation of auditory and visual information and then completed a test phase to assess not only whether they …
Joint Bank Accounts: Who Needs Them?, Reid K. Weisbord, Stewart E. Sterk
Joint Bank Accounts: Who Needs Them?, Reid K. Weisbord, Stewart E. Sterk
Articles
Joint bank accounts, once known as a “poor man’s will,” emerged more than a century ago as a probate avoidance device. This Article contends that joint accounts no longer serve a useful estate planning function, and they pose an unacceptably high risk to banking consumers because the legal framework governing lifetime ownership rights is deeply flawed and underdeveloped. Courts typically apply one of two prevailing models for allocating lifetime rights: (1) the traditional joint tenancy approach, which presumes equal ownership of account funds by each party; and (2) the Uniform Probate Code’s approach, which presumes ownership in proportion to each …
The Impact Of Ai Companions On Family Law, Clare Huntington
The Impact Of Ai Companions On Family Law, Clare Huntington
Cardozo Law Review
People of all ages and backgrounds regularly use AI companions—virtual friends, lovers, and confidantes powered by artificial intelligence. As a new form of relationship, this development poses novel doctrinal and policy questions for family law. As a doctrinal matter, what does child neglect look like when a parent delegates caretaking to an AI companion? How should standards for elder neglect adapt to the widespread use of robotic caregivers? Should lawmakers impose mandatory reporting requirements on therapy bots if children share experiences of abuse or neglect? And can people designate an AI companion as a health care proxy? As a policy …

The rise of popular podcasts has shaped public discourse and influenced millions worldwide on how they ought to think, imagine, and act about controversial subjects. Podcasts create an avenue for stories about power and technology to co-create a narrative that viewers buy into. This thesis analyzes one of these essential podcasts, Pod Save America, in how Democratic elite guests approach identity politics, a phenomenon best described as advocacy based on one position’s in society. I begin the thesis by considering the differences in scholarly interpretation of how identity politics functions conceptually and practically. Then, I integrate ideas about how …
Between Chronicle And Legend: A Two-Scene Environment And Visual Effects Examination Of Physical Accuracy And Emotional Exaggeration On The Honey Creek Bridge Collapse, Alison R. Gaddy
All Theses
This thesis explores how truth and dramatization intersect in digital storytelling by comparing realistic and stylized simulations of the Honey Creek bridge collapse within the context of the Kate Shelley animated short. At the core of storytelling lies a tension between factual accuracy and dramatic stylization. We investigate that tension by examining how narrative truth is conveyed, distorted, or enhanced through visual dramatization by focusing on the psychology of audience perception and the motivations behind creative embellishment. The practical contribution of this research is the development of two distinct digital scene setups depicting the same Honey Creek bridge collapse event. …

How Mindfulness Influences The Frequency Of Flow In Collegiate Athletes, Kelly Torres
How Mindfulness Influences The Frequency Of Flow In Collegiate Athletes, Kelly Torres
All Theses
Flow is defined as a state of optimal experience characterized by deep focus and total absorption that has been consistently linked to enhanced performance (Csikszentmihalyi, 1990; Jackson and Csikszentmihalyi, 1999). Mindfulness, defined as present-moment awareness with acceptance and nonjudgement, has been widely used in sport psychology interventions to improve both performance and well-being (Harris et al., 2023; Kabat-Zinn, 2015; Reive, 2019). However, less is known about how and why mindfulness contributes to performance outcomes and what role flow plays. This study examined the relationship between trait mindfulness and dispositional flow among Clemson University collegiate athletes (N=144), while exploring …
Understanding Barriers To Breast Cancer Screening Among Rural Women In South Carolina: A Qualitative Study Using The Idea Model, Israt Jahan
All Theses
Breast cancer screening rates remain low among rural women in South Carolina, leading to higher incidences of late-stage cancer diagnosis. This qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to investigate reasons why many women delay or avoid screenings, even when free screening programs such as the Best Chance Network are available in South Carolina. Guided by the IDEA model, the study explored how women interpret cancer risk, how they seek and trust cancer information, how they understand screening explanations, and what barriers affect their ability to take action. Participants described fear of pain, fear of diagnosis, personal relevance, confusion about the screening …
Forest Overstory Mortality & Recruitment Patterns Eight Years Following Wildfire In The Southern Appalachians, Ruth Cumberland
Forest Overstory Mortality & Recruitment Patterns Eight Years Following Wildfire In The Southern Appalachians, Ruth Cumberland
All Theses
In this study, we investigated patterns of forest overstory mortality and recruitment eight years after wildfire in a large wildfire site the Southern Appalachians, a topic that has not been thoroughly investigated to date. With evidence that pre-fire drought promotes post-fire mortality through impaired physiological function and increased fuel consumption, unknown patterns following wildfire are important to study under shifting climate and land-use conditions. In Chapter 1, three areas of interest were investigated: (a) functional group mortality response to wildfire effects, (b) temporal differences in early (1-3 years) and late (5-8 years) periods of delayed forest overstory mortality patterns following …
Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage As A Model For Exploring The Effects Of Pain On Gait, Sydney Savage
Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage As A Model For Exploring The Effects Of Pain On Gait, Sydney Savage
All Theses
Persistent gait asymmetry following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is a recognized contributor to post-traumatic knee osteoarthritis, yet the independent role of pain in driving altered movement patterns remains poorly understood due to confounding factors inherent to clinical populations. This study used exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) as a controlled experimental model to isolate the effects of musculoskeletal pain on gait, independent of kinesiophobia, structural damage, and proprioceptive disruption. Eighteen healthy adults underwent unilateral eccentric calf-raise protocols to induce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), with gait assessed at baseline, 48 hours, and 168 hours post-exercise using bilateral inertial measurement units. Outcomes …

Portrayals Of Miscarriage In Film And Television: A Qualitative Analysis, Geovana Leonetti Saraiva
Portrayals Of Miscarriage In Film And Television: A Qualitative Analysis, Geovana Leonetti Saraiva
All Theses
Entertainment media may serve as a primary source through which individuals learn about miscarriage; however, little research has examined how miscarriage is portrayed in film and television. This study addresses this gap by conducting a textual analysis of five films and five television shows using a constructivist grounded theory approach. Guided by the model of stigma communication (MSC), communication privacy management theory (CPM), and social support frameworks, the analysis explores how miscarriage is represented in entertainment media.
Findings indicate that the analyzed content frequently includes stigma-related cues—such as marks, labels, responsibility, and peril—that may contribute to the formation and reinforcement …
The Invisible Toll: Black College Women And The Intersection Of Academic Stress, Rest Deficiency And Exhaustion At Clemson University, Jomya Ford
All Theses
Leisure has been an under-explored aspect of Black women’s lives in higher education, particularly within predominantly white institutions (PWIs), where limited culturally relevant opportunities and racialized isolation shape daily experiences. Constraints around rest, rooted in racism and gendered expectations, continue to influence how Black college women navigate academic pressure, deficiency narratives, and exhaustion. Guided by intersectionality, this qualitative study draws on semi‑structured interviews with Black undergraduate and graduate women at a PWI to explore how cultural upbringing, institutional climates, and internalized expectations shape their definitions and practices of rest. Findings show that while participants recognize rest as necessary, they rarely …

Scrolling For Support: Social Media Use, Health Information Seeking, And Social Support In Individuals With Type 1 Diabetes, Loren Myers
All Theses
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a lifelong chronic illness that is rapidly increasing in prevalence. Continuous treatment is necessary for proper management, but barriers to care can cause some to turn to other sources for health-related information, like social media. Given the limited research on social media use and health information seeking behaviors in people with T1D, this study aims to gain an understanding of how people with T1D use social media, where they get their health information, and how social support is related to social media behaviors among people with T1D. Adult T1D participants completed an online survey that …
Development Of Low-Cost Triaxial Force Sensor For Measurement Of Human-Exoskeleton Interaction Forces, Hamdan Khan Sarvathullah
Development Of Low-Cost Triaxial Force Sensor For Measurement Of Human-Exoskeleton Interaction Forces, Hamdan Khan Sarvathullah
All Theses
Contemporary research suggests that shear force is a major contributor to discomfort and pressure injury. However, the variation of shear forces during human-exoskeleton interaction dynamics is a highly unexplored field. The high cost of commercial triaxial force sensors may be a major factor in the notable lack of research in this field. Therefore, in this paper, we present a low-cost, 3D-printed triaxial force sensor designed specifically to measure the triaxial interaction forces between an exoskeleton and its user. The triaxial force sensor uses Carbon-Black/Silicone Rubber (CB/SR) strings to measure shear forces, whereas the normal force is measured with a Force …
Anxiety And Intuitive Eating: Examining Dispositional Mindfulness As A Protective Factor, Jordan Signorelli
Anxiety And Intuitive Eating: Examining Dispositional Mindfulness As A Protective Factor, Jordan Signorelli
All Theses
Intuitive eating (IE) is an anti-diet approach focused on listening to internal hunger and fullness cues and is associated with reduced disordered eating patterns and improved dietary intake. However, anxiety negatively impacts IE. Dispositional mindfulness (DM) – one’s innate, present-centered, nonjudgmental awareness of thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations – is associated with lower anxiety and greater IE. Yet, whether DM mitigates the negative impact of anxiety on IE remains underexplored. Grounded in the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Framework, this study aimed to: 1) examine the relationship between anxiety and IE, 2) examine the relationship between DM and IE, 3) examine whether …
