Flysurf: A Flying Robotic Surface With Shape Morphing And Motion Control, Kevin Aubert De Luchi Lomellini
Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs
This thesis introduces FlySurf, a novel flying robotic surface capable of simultaneous shape morphing and motion control. FlySurf is modeled as a mesh-based dynamic structure actuated by multiple unmanned aerial vehicles, enabling complex deformations during flight. The proposed control architecture comprises three main components. First, a state estimator to infer the robotic surface state from limited observations. Second, a shape trajectory planner that incorporates an affine deformation term to preserve surface integrity during shape transitions. Third, a surface controller to minimize the error between the desired and actual surface configurations.
The methodology is validated through realistic simulations and hardware experiments, …

The Relative Importance Of Wind And Hydroclimate Drivers In Modulating Wind-Blown Dust Emissions In Earth System Models, Xinzhu Li, Longlei Li, Yan Feng, Xin Xi
Michigan Tech Publications
Windblown dust emissions are subject to large uncertainties in Earth system models (ESMs), yet model discrepancies in dust variability and its physical drivers remain poorly understood. This study evaluates the consistency of 21 ESMs in simulating the climatological distribution and interannual variability of global dust emissions and applies dominance analysis to quantify the relative influence of near-surface wind speed and five hydroclimate variables (precipitation, soil moisture, specific humidity, air temperature, leaf area index) across different climate zones. In hyperarid regions, the models exhibit poor agreement in dust variability, with only 10 % of pairwise comparisons showing significant positive correlations. Most …

Beowulf And Théoden: Differing Teaching Methods Of Hrothgar And Gandalf, Ali Mirzabayati
Journal of Tolkien Research
Most studies on the character of Théoden in The Lord of the Rings center on Germanic heroic themes like courage and oath-keeping, often emphasizing his renewal by Gandalf at Meduseld and his death at the Battle of Pelennor Fields. This perspective overlooks Théoden's growth in wisdom and hope between these events. During this period, Théoden learns about the various forces in Middle-earth and contemplates his role in the broader world, leading to a profound sense of humility. Building on Tolkien's inspiration from Beowulf, this paper compares Théoden and Beowulf to explore their learning processes and heroic outcomes. This comparison …

Swarm intelligence, inspired by the decentralised, adaptive and self-synchronising behaviours of natural swarms, is a pivotal component of autonomous systems, enhancing efficiency, robustness and scalability. The research in this area is nascent and interdisciplinary. To drive this important research forward, it is necessary to adopt a systems perspective on what is available in the current literature. This chapter offers a comprehensive systems perspective of the integration of swarm intelligence within the broader domain of automation, emphasising its application in the defence sector. A systems perspective of an interdisciplinary field is afforded through scientometrics. Using VOSviewer algorithms, we analysed 1706 publications …

Eloq: Resources For Enhancing Llm Detection Of Out-Of-Scope Questions, Zhiyuan Peng, Jinming Nian, Alexandre Evfimievski, Yi Fang
Computer Science and Engineering
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has become integral to large language models (LLMs), particularly for conversational AI systems where user questions may reference knowledge beyond the LLMs' training cutoff. However, many natural user questions lack well-defined answers, either due to limited domain knowledge or because the retrieval system returns documents that are relevant in appearance but uninformative in content. In such cases, LLMs often produce hallucinated answers without flagging them. While recent work has largely focused on questions with false premises, we study out-of-scope questions, where the retrieved document appears semantically similar to the question but lacks the necessary information to answer …
Qder: Query-Specific Document And Entity Representations For Multi-Vector Document Re-Ranking, Shubham Chatterjee, Jeff Dalton
Qder: Query-Specific Document And Entity Representations For Multi-Vector Document Re-Ranking, Shubham Chatterjee, Jeff Dalton
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Neural IR has advanced through two distinct paths: entity-oriented approaches leveraging knowledge graphs and multi-vector models capturing fine-grained semantics. We introduce QDER, a neural re-ranking model that unifies these approaches by integrating knowledge graph semantics into a multi-vector model. QDER's key innovation lies in its modeling of query-document relationships: rather than computing similarity scores on aggregated embeddings, we maintain individual token and entity representations throughout the ranking process, performing aggregation only at the final scoring stage-an approach we call "late aggregation." We first transform these fine-grained representations through learned attention patterns, then apply carefully chosen mathematical operations for precise matches. …

Entomology and Plant Pathology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Soybeans, one of the most important legumes, face multiple stresses including drought and herbivory. But the potential transfer of the interactive effects of these stressors onto the transgenerational plants has not been understood. We hypothesised that progeny from stressed parents will have enhanced ecophysiology and defence traits through priming, affecting fitness. Experimental plants were derived from seeds of drought (D), drought and herbivory interaction (D & times; H), herbivory (H) and well-watered (WW) treatments imposed on parental generation. The findings revealed significant transgenerational effects of D, D & times; H, H and WW treatments; D & times; H treatment had …

Characterization Of Dna Background On Duct Tape Stored In Domestic Environments, Elaan A. Lukasiewicz
Student Theses
With lower detection limits for forensic DNA analysis, it is important to have a better understanding of background DNA levels unrelated to the crime to facilitate accurate data interpretation. Duct tape is used in crimes, e.g. to bind victims and seal drug packaging, and may be tested for DNA. To determine DNA background levels, twelve volunteers were recruited to donate a used roll of duct tape from their home. The duct tape was divided into three areas: inside, outside, and sides of the roll, and swabbed for DNA. The average concentration of DNA was determined for the inside (0.0723 ng/µL …

Ovochymase 2 Is A Key Regulatory Factor Modulating Proteolytic Pathways And Sperm Maturation In The Mammalian Epididymis, Anna Malovannaya, Thomas X Garcia, Martin M Matzuk
Faculty, Staff and Students Publications
Spermatozoa acquire fertilizing competence during epididymal transit through proteolytic, chaperone-mediated, and post-translational modifications. Ovochymase 2, an epididymis-specific trypsin-like serine protease, has emerged as a central regulator of this maturation process. Here, we integrate targeted gene disruption, comprehensive proteomic profiling, and affinity-based proteome enrichment to delineate how Ovochymase 2 influences sperm functionality. Deletion of Ovochymase 2 disrupts the proteome of epididymal sperm, resulting in diminished levels of core fertility-related factors-including a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain 3, β-defensins, and protease-inhibitor complexes-while inducing compensatory upregulation of alternate proteases and chaperones. Interaction assays confirm direct or indirect associations between Ovochymase 2 and sperm surface …

Neurophysiology And Endocrine Responses To Hunger And Satiety Mechanisms: The Brain-Gut Crosstalk, Nour Shakir Rezaieg, Muthanna M. Awad
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
Background: Obesity is a main public health problem which substantially increases the risk of many diseases. The complex neural circuitry controls energy homeostasis and food consumption by the incorporation of hormonal and neural signals. Circulating hormones, in specific the gut hormones, have been found to be very important in appetite regulation. These hormones transfer energy situation signs to the brain throughout three principle paths: the circulation system, activation of the vagus nerve, and direct modification of main brain regions such as the hypothalamus and brainstem. The control of food eating is not exclusively dependent on the homeostatic processes, rather it …

A Novel Chaotic Dna-Based Image Cryptosystem Leveraging Euclidean Division, Dynamic Josephus Traversal, And Reservoir Computing, Ahmed Kareem Shibeeb, Salah Albermany, Sadiq A. Mehdi
Karbala International Journal of Modern Science
This study presents a new chaotic DNA-based image cryptosystem that combines Euclidean division, dynamic Josephus traversal (DJT), and reservoir computing to address the weaknesses of current methods. Old chaotic DNA cryptosystems usually have problems such as using the same keys for different messages, simple DNA processes, and being vulnerable to attacks where the attacker can choose the input or try many options. The cryptosystem in this study uses a 7D hyperchaotic system that starts with keys created from SHA-512 hashes to produce changing keystreams based on the plaintext, making it very strong against such attacks. The proposed cryptosystem uses a …

Low Entropy Side-Channel Secure Hardware Implementations, Jhelum Dhar
Master’s Dissertations
The demand for symmetric-key cryptography implemented in hardware is growing due to the increasing need for faster, more efficient, and secure encryption in small devices. However, implementing block ciphers in hardware that are side-channel secure remains a challenging goal. This holds true because there exist sophisticated but well-studied attacks such as Differential Power Analysis, which uses the correlation between power consumption of a device and the information on it to allow attackers with physical access to the cryptographic device to get information about secret data. Masking is one of the techniques that is used to provide security against sidechannel attacks. …

So, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) is used to deal with different and numerous criteria in this study. This study proposes an MCDM methodology to rank the locations and select the best criterion. The average method is used to compute the criteria weights. The locations are ranked using the root assessment method (RAM). This study uses eight criteria and 20 locations. We use the single valued neutrosophic numbers (SVNNs) to overcome uncertainty and vague information. The RAM methodology is used under the SVNNs. The results show that Availability …

Neutrosophic Systems with Applications
The open data services industry is very important for artificial intelligence and digital transformations. The open data services industry has different risks and challenges, so this study proposed a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approach for risk management in open data services industry. This study uses the average method to compute the criteria weights and the WASPAS method to rank the alternatives. The triangular neutrosophic set (TNS) is used in this study to overcome uncertainty and vague information. It has three membership functions such as truth, indeterminacy, and falsity. This study uses nine criteria and 18 risks to be evaluated. The …
