Tracing Graffiti: Negotiating Lived Urban Surfaces, Akinaura Irbah Priambudi, Multazam Akbar Junaedi, Ilena Nusky Mehdia, Eugenia Emmanuella Setiawan, Defry Agatha Ardianta

ARSNET

This paper examines surfaces as a selective, successive platform for shared spatial negotiations. It explores how layers of traces on surfaces accumulate through subsequent acts by multiple actors over time, offering a way to understand ongoing negotiations of urban space. This study focuses on graffiti as material traces in urban surfaces, produced from temporary acts of writing and the articulation of spatiality within the environment. Through a case study in Surabaya, Indonesia, this research examines graffiti, reconstructs its presence on an urban wall, and investigates how its contextual presence, actors' interactions, and spatial relationships are articulated in layers over time. …

Cultural Narrative Of The Adapted Manggarai Traditional Dwelling, Firminus Darmo, Rr. Sophia Ratna Haryati

ARSNET

This study investigates the adaptation narrative of Mbaru Gendang, a traditional house of the Manggarai people in Flores, NTT, that plays a central role in the region's cultural and spatial identity. This study aims to examine how the adapted Mbaru Gendang shows negotiation between cultural continuity and architectural modernisation in the West Satar Mese District. Through the lens of spatial semiotics and cultural heritage theory, this study investigates how changes in the building's form and materials affect the philosophical value of the traditional house. The study examines these transformations in Tenge Village and compares them with shifts in nearby …

Organizational Health Inventory: A Comprehensive Exam For Assessing Extension's Organizational Health, Tearney R Woodruff, Meggan Franks, Hannah G. Edwards, Lauren D. Hargrave, Brandi Berven, Cynthia Canfield

Journal of Extension

As Extension faces a retention crisis, it is crucial to focus on the health of our organizations. A collaborative working group, comprised of evaluation and staff development specialists across multiple states, identified the need for a free, accessible organizational health evaluation tool for Extension. Many higher education institutions cannot afford consultants to assess organizational well-being and effectiveness yet need the data the evaluation would provide. This article highlights a validated survey instrument, the Organizational Health Inventory–Extension (OHI-EXT), designed to help Extension organizations identify issues and implement targeted interventions that foster a stable and engaged workforce.

Designing With, Not For Youth: Reframing Participatory Techniques As Civic Learning Tools For Urban Greening And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I Rodriguez Gonzalez, Dorelys Oyola Remigio, Kevin G Torres Garrido

Journal of Extension

Here, we present four participatory techniques—visioning, mapping, photovoice, and codesign—with practical recommendations for their effective implementation in fostering civic learning and engagement in urban greening among BIPOC and Hispanic youth. With examples of culturally responsive, hands-on activities and an AI-assisted synthesis of youth ideas, drawn from application with over 100 youth in Connecticut, we illustrate their use in informing local urban planning processes. We highlight the role of these techniques in positioning youth as active civic agents and collaborative designers in the creation of urban green spaces, with application for Extension professionals, educators, and planning officials.

Confluence: Linking Citizen Science And Extension Education To Inspire Environmental Stewardship, Dave Smaldone, Evan Harms, Jason Burnside, Chad Pierskalla, Jinyang Deng

Journal of Extension

Citizen science has rapidly moved beyond simply crowdsourcing data to become a novel platform for environmental and informal science education. However, few studies document the informal learning outcomes of citizen science, particularly in youth or Extension education. This quantitative study evaluated individual learning outcomes of an environmental education and citizen science experience about water quality at 4-H summer camps. Outcomes of interest, knowledge, and stewardship intentions were evaluated using pre- and post-participation surveys. The results showed an overall success of the program. By understanding these outcomes, we can better plan citizen-science-focused Extension learning experiences to meet strategically targeted outcomes.

Identifying Practitioner Needs Related To Rural Population Changes Using Whiteboard-Enhanced, Online Listening Sessions, Jason P. De Koff, Kristina Brant, John Green, Paige Kelly, Katherine Curtis, Sreedhar Upendram, Gloria Mangoni

Journal of Extension

Rural communities are changing in size and composition, with implications for programming needs. As these communities comprise a large proportion of any Cooperative Extension program's stakeholder group, programs must identify and respond to changing needs. Through online listening sessions with Extension professionals and other rural practitioners, we identified how researchers and others could support practitioners' programming. Practitioners called for local data, examples of successful programs and policies, enhanced program evaluation protocols, better information dissemination, strategies for equitable community discussions, and ways to identify and connect with trusted resources. Using whiteboard-enhanced online listening sessions helped identify needs and reduced logistical efforts.

Growing Climate Literacy In Urban Green Spaces: An Extension Youth Climate Education Experience, Brad Bessler, Justin Hougham Oct 2026

Growing Climate Literacy In Urban Green Spaces: An Extension Youth Climate Education Experience, Brad Bessler, Justin Hougham

Journal of Extension

Capturing Your Environment (CYE) is an environmental education framework that engages youth in place-based climate exploration. CYE was implemented with youth participating in a Milwaukee summer internship program funded by the Children, Youth, and Families at Risk (CYFAR) Sustainable Community Projects grant. The primary objective of CYE was to create an engaging climate-centered experience for youth. The experience aimed to improve science efficacy, climate content knowledge, science skills, and confidence using scientific tools. A paired t-test compared the learners' pre- and post-experience responses on a 16-item self-report survey. Following participation in CYE, youth reported increases across all measured outcomes.

Cross-Cultural Considerations In Psychological Assessment And Resilience: Advancing Equity In Global Mental Health, Shivani Mathur, Victoria Evans-Fulton Oct 2026

Cross-Cultural Considerations In Psychological Assessment And Resilience: Advancing Equity In Global Mental Health, Shivani Mathur, Victoria Evans-Fulton

Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences

Widely used psychological assessment instruments, including the Patient Health Questionnaire–9, Beck Depression Inventory, and Generalized Anxiety Disorder–7, were developed primarily within Euro-North American contexts. Although frequently used for their efficiency and psychometric strengths, their application across culturally diverse populations raises concerns regarding cross-cultural validity, fairness, clinical interpretation, and ethical use. Expressions of psychological distress, resilience, and adaptive functioning vary across cultural contexts and may involve somatic complaints, relational meanings, spiritual frameworks, culturally specific idioms of distress, and community-oriented coping that standardized measures may inadequately capture. Without sufficient cultural and contextual inquiry, clinicians risk misdiagnosis, failure to recognize distress, and deficit-oriented …

A Comprehensive Review On The Role Of Deep Learning For Detecting And Identifying Obscured Objects, Baraa Hasan Hadi, Jamila Harbi Saud

Karbala International Journal of Modern Science

Human operators frequently encounter eye fatigue that typically comes from workload and sleep deprivation. This could affect the efficiency and performance of vigilance significantly. In safety-sensitive applications such as traffic systems, healthcare, and security, this issue is essential. To address this issue, there is a need for situational awareness and maintaining continuous monitoring of the workload of the person. To this end, advanced artificial intelligence (AI) methods, denoted by a deep learning (DL) based approach, can be used. Such methods are also supported by computer vision (CV) to detect and identify obscured objects. Combining CV with AI can overcome the …

Examining The Organization Of Student Work And Wellbeing In Higher Music Education, Kyle Zavitz, Liliana Araújo, Christine Guptill Oct 2026

Examining The Organization Of Student Work And Wellbeing In Higher Music Education, Kyle Zavitz, Liliana Araújo, Christine Guptill

Journal of Institutional Ethnography

This article investigates how music students’ work is institutionally coordinated within a higher school of music in Canada and how this shapes student health and wellbeing. This study reveals a problematic in students’ everyday experiences as the work required to succeed extends beyond what is formally recognized and made visible through institutional structures. Using Institutional Ethnography as the method of inquiry, we begin from the standpoint of music students, exploring the local and extra-local relations that coordinate what and how they do their work. Through interviews with students, faculty, and administrators, we trace students’ negotiation of contradictory discourses of ‘care’ …

Student (Mis)Placement In Swedish Special Education Provision Through Intellectual Disability Labeling: The Educator Standpoint, Liz Adams Lyngback, Enni Paul, Christina Headman Oct 2026

Student (Mis)Placement In Swedish Special Education Provision Through Intellectual Disability Labeling: The Educator Standpoint, Liz Adams Lyngback, Enni Paul, Christina Headman

Journal of Institutional Ethnography

This institutional ethnography exploration begins with the standpoint of educators and focuses on the work related to ways students in Sweden exit the separate compulsory school for students with intellectual disability (CSID) and re-enter the regular compulsory school form through a student referral unit (SRU). By exploring what appears to puzzle the education system at the local level, this study contributes to a growing body of research on addressing multilingualism as a disability. Drawing on multi-sited ethnographic data, the study moves beyond educators’ experience to a broader inquiry into the ruling relations that coordinate the creation of misplaced students. The …

Life After Ecmo: A Comprehensive Review Of Longterm Complications, Mia Olson Pa-C Oct 2026

Life After Ecmo: A Comprehensive Review Of Longterm Complications, Mia Olson Pa-C

Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science

Extracorporeal life support is the ability to temporarily supplement pulmonary and/or cardiac function in the setting of severe organ failure, with the most widely used version of this technology being extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). While ECMO acutely improves outcomes in many patients with acute cardiopulmonary failure, evidence shows that survivors are at risk for long-term complications. These may include physical limitations, neurocognitive impairment, and psychological distress, all of which cumulate to impact a patient’s quality of life. The purpose of this research paper is to examine the literature on long-term complications associated with ECMO therapy and their impact on patient …

Continuity Beyond Delivery: A Family Medicine Approach To Racial And Ethnic Equity In Postpartum Care, Dominique J. Tarrant Oct 2026

Continuity Beyond Delivery: A Family Medicine Approach To Racial And Ethnic Equity In Postpartum Care, Dominique J. Tarrant

Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science

This narrative review examines interventions to improve postpartum care continuity, reduce disparities, and advance maternal health equity, emphasizing structured follow-up, care coordination, and family medicine integration. The postpartum period, often called the “fourth trimester,” should connect recovery with lifelong health. However, many women, particularly those from racially and ethnically minoritized populations, encounter missed screenings, inadequate support, and structural barriers that increase their risk of adverse maternal outcomes. Electronic searches of PubMed and Google Scholar were conducted from October 27 through November 7, 2025, using combinations of “postpartum care,” “family medicine integration,” “racial and ethnic disparities,” “health equity,” and “fourth trimester.” …

Recent Case: Equal Protection - Transgender Discrimination In Women's Sports: West Virginia V B.P.J., Joey Martinez

ConLawNOW

This Recent Case Note analyzes the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in West Virginia v. B.P.J. (2026) in which the Court upheld state laws banning transgender women and girls from competing on women’s and girls’ sports teams. By holding that the state bans were justified by concerns with physical safety and fair competition, the Court rejected a claim that the bans violated the Equal Protection Clause and applied an arguably less demanding heightened scrutiny standard than its prior cases seemingly required. The Court deferred to the state legislatures on the contested questions of medical and sports science, applying a weakened “new …

Towards Equitable Protection: The Legal And Societal Invisibility Of Unmarried Relationships And Dating Violence In India, Annet Shaju, Aditi Padiyar Oct 2026

Towards Equitable Protection: The Legal And Societal Invisibility Of Unmarried Relationships And Dating Violence In India, Annet Shaju, Aditi Padiyar

Journal of International Women's Studies

In India, unmarried romantic relationships, and especially cohabitation, are cultural taboos for which women unequivocally bear the brunt of societal stigma and moral scrutiny. Although India’s Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (PWDV) explicitly includes women in unmarried relationships, deeply entrenched socio-cultural bias permeates institutional mechanisms, impeding support, legal assistance, and protection for unmarried women. The 2025 state mandate to register unmarried relationships involving cohabitation signals a shift towards increased moral policing and infringement of privacy and autonomy. Such repressive rules risk being counterproductive; there is a need for regulations that prioritize women’s empowerment and broader societal changes …

Birthing In A Foreign Land, Sadhiya Saleem Oct 2026

Birthing In A Foreign Land, Sadhiya Saleem

Journal of International Women's Studies

This narrative poem explores the embodied experience of childbirth in a foreign land. Set within the unfamiliar environment of a hospital far from the speaker’s linguistic roots, the poem traces the physical and emotional landscape of labor as one profoundly shaped by displacement and disconnection. Through sensory imagery and fragmented memory, it portrays how giving birth in an unfamiliar context amid the absence of familiar support systems and linguistic comfort creates a profound sense of bodily estrangement. The poem enters broader feminist conversations to reclaim the maternal body, marked by migration and displacement, as a definitive site of memory and …

A Feminist Analysis Of Post-Independence Administrative Reforms In Bihar, Shrey Sharma, Rajeev Kumar Jain, Ashutosh K. Pandey, Shashikant Nishant Sharma Oct 2026

A Feminist Analysis Of Post-Independence Administrative Reforms In Bihar, Shrey Sharma, Rajeev Kumar Jain, Ashutosh K. Pandey, Shashikant Nishant Sharma

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper critically examines the administrative reforms in Bihar since India’s independence, focusing on the evolution of women’s roles and representation in state governance. Drawing on historiographic and textual analyses of academic scholarship, government reports, reform commission findings, and policy documents, the study uses the case of the Indian state of Bihar to explore how political leadership, bureaucratic structures, and gendered hierarchies intersect in shaping postcolonial governance. Bihar, historically marked by institutional fragility and social inequality, provides an illustrative context for assessing how national-level reforms— such as the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments, civil service modernization, and e governance—have attempted …

The Role Of Tribal And Dalit Women In Water Conservation: A Case Study Of The Western Indian Trans-Himalayan Region, Vivek Kumar, Anuradha Choudhary Oct 2026

The Role Of Tribal And Dalit Women In Water Conservation: A Case Study Of The Western Indian Trans-Himalayan Region, Vivek Kumar, Anuradha Choudhary

Journal of International Women's Studies

Water scarcity and environmental degradation are pressing contemporary issues, and the Himalayan regions are especially at risk. The Trans-Himalayas in particular face severe resource scarcity as water availability is totally dependent on the now dwindling supply of glacial meltwater. Women in the Spiti Valley in the Trans-Himalayan region are particularly exposed to these issues because they spend significant time collecting water and fodder for domestic animals and managing agricultural irrigation. As the primary caregivers and managers of households, women in this region face greater challenges in adapting to and mitigating resource scarcity. This study focuses on the role of Dalit …
