Enhanced Prediction Of Condensation Pressure Drop In Mini And Microchannels Using Physics-Assisted Machine Learning, Farshad Barghi Golezani, Jiayuan Li, Forouzan Naderi, Alexander Meylikhov, Logan M. Pirnstill, Issam Mudawar, Chirag R. Kharangate

Faculty Scholarship

Reliable prediction of frictional pressure drop during condensation in mini‑ and microchannels underpins both thermal management effectiveness and overall heat transfer performance in compact two‑phase heat exchangers, cold‑plates, and on‑chip cooling loops. Excess pressure loss burdens pumps, raises electrical consumption, and can destabilize flow, whereas under‑prediction risks temperature overshoot and premature dryout. Conventional empirical correlations and flexible machine-learning models can lose accuracy once channel size, working fluid, or operating conditions stray beyond their testing range. This study uses a physics‑assisted machine‑learning framework that overlays an XGBoost residual learner on the Kim–Mudawar separated‑flow correlation to achieve high fidelity and robustness in …

Carbon Metabolism And Multidrug Resistance In Bacillus Mobilis And Cupriavidus Campinensis Isolated From Cadmium-Spiked Soils, Philips O. Akinwole, Emma E.C. Jacobs '25, Nina G. Shaffer '25

Biology Faculty publications

Heavy metal contamination and antibiotic resistance are critical environmental and public health challenges, often exacerbated by co-selection pressures in polluted environments. This study identifies and characterizes Bacillus mobilis and Cupriavidus campinensis, two cadmium-tolerant bacterial species isolated from cadmium-amended soils with cadmium (Cd2+) concentrations exceeding those typically found in highly contaminated soils. Both species exhibited multidrug resistance and the ability to metabolize specific carbon substrates, including pyruvic acid methyl ester, itaconic acid, D-galactonic acid-γ-lactone, Tween-40, and Tween-80. These substrates enhance microbial activity and heavy metal bioavailability, supporting their potential roles in bioremediation, especially through the targeted introduction of …

Baku Mathematical Journal

This study presents a comprehensive case study investigating the application of Variational Physics-Informed Neural Networks (VPINNs) combined with B-spline test functions for solving the generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation in one space dimension. The Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, a nonlinear fourth-order PDE, serves as a benchmark for modeling instabilities in fluid dynamics, combustion, and pattern formation. Our methodology leverages variational formulations to enhance solution accuracy while ensuring robust convergence. Through systematic numerical experiments, we demonstrate that VPINNs effectively capture complex dynamical behaviors in high-order nonlinear systems. The framework’s robustness is evaluated across different network architectures and multi-stage optimization strategies using Adam and L-BFGS optimizers. …

Baku Mathematical Journal

In this paper, a seventh order nonlinear partial differential equations with mixed and additional conditions and positive parameter is considered. The Fourier spectral method of separation of variables is applied. Countable systems of nonlinear functional-integral equations are derived. Theorem on the uniqueness and existence of the solution of inverse problem is proved for some values of parameter. The method of contraction mapping in Banach space is applied. The solution of the inverse problem is obtained in the form of Fourier series. Theorem on absolute and uniform convergence of Fourier series is proved.

Process And Mechanism Of Defluorination Using Magnesium Chloride-Modified Coal Gangue, Zhao Li, Zhou Wangxu, Zhang Qing, Xing Mingfei, Xu Feng, Kong Weifang, Liu Yifei, Qin Guangyu

Coal Geology & Exploration

Background The rapid development of industry has resulted in a yearly increase in wastewater discharge, which induces a gradually rising fluorine concentration in water. In this context, removing fluoride using natural materials and industrial waste has emerged as a popular research topic. Coal gangue, one of the largest contributors to industrial waste in China, contains substantial clay minerals, and its pore structure can be effectively improved through modification. This helps significantly enhance its adsorption performance and thus achieve efficient fluoride removal from water. Methods This study investigated coal gangue from a typical mining area of the Henan Energy and Chemical …

Constructions Of Compact Dupin Hypersurfaces With Non-Constant Lie Curvatures, Thomas E. Cecil

Mathematics and Computer Science Department Faculty Scholarship

A hypersurface M in the unit sphere Sn ⊂ Rn+1 is Dupin if along each curvature surface of M, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. If the number g of distinct principal curvatures is constant on M, then M is called proper Dupin. In this expository paper, we give a detailed description of two important types of constructions of compact proper Dupin hypersurfaces in Sn. One construction was published in 1989 by Pinkall and Thorbergsson [35], and the second was published in 1989 by Miyaoka and Ozawa [26]. Both types of examples have the …

Enhanced Pmu Data Imputation Using Variational Autoencoder: A Novel Approach For Improved Accuracy, Subin Koshy, Sunitha Rajan, Elizabeth P. Cheriyan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Data collected from various measurement devices, such as phasor measurement units (PMUs), form the backbone of power system monitoring algorithms such as state estimation algorithms. Even though modern PMUs are efficient, data inaccuracies and loss can still occur due to problems like equipment malfunctions, communication issues, and hardware or software glitches. Missing values in the datasets can also affect the overall quality, impacting the algorithms dependent on them. This article introduces a novel technique for real-time imputation of missing data using variational autoencoder (VAE) and utilizing the latent space representation acquired from VAE. The method has demonstrated enhanced accuracy in …
