Palpation As A Method To Predict Spatial Instrumental Hyolaryngeal Excursion Measures, Kelsey L. Muarry, Sarah H. Szynkiewicz, Erin Kamarunas

Otolaryngology Publications

The purpose of this study is to determine if speech-language pathologists’ (SLP) ratings of palpated hyolaryngeal excursion (pHLE) during a clinical swallow evaluation (CSE) are predictive of spatial measures of hyolaryngeal excursion determined by instrumentation (iHLE). Adults between the ages of 18–99 were recruited with a physician referral to complete a CSE and videofluoroscopy swallow study. Four SLP investigators completed ratings of pHLE palpation during a CSE. Spatial measures of hyoid peak elevation were taken from videofluoroscopy swallow studies. Statistical analyses included multiple linear regression to determine the best-fitting model to predict iHLE from palpated ratings. Data from 77 volunteers …

Turning Ndc 3.0 Into Action: An Implementation Framework For Hard-To-Abate Sectors Decarbonization - The Brazil Case Study, Mohamed Khaled Sep 2025

Turning Ndc 3.0 Into Action: An Implementation Framework For Hard-To-Abate Sectors Decarbonization - The Brazil Case Study, Mohamed Khaled

COP30

Brazil stands to lead an industrial transition using green hydrogen for steel production, using its renewable energy advantage to bridge the gap between pilot project success and commercial implementation. Brazil's hydrogen project—including 12 planned hubs and Vale's strategic partnerships—shows how the country can implement its NDC 3.0 commitment s into actionable steps while establishing a replicable model for developing countries. Green hydrogen emerges as a transformative solution for steel decarbonization, offering an alternative way to replace the coal pathway. Hydrogen-based direct reduction fundamentally changes steelmaking by utilizing renewable-powered electrolysis to produce hydrogen that reduces iron ore without carbon byproduct s. …

Governing Emissions: The Global Potential Of Carbon Pricing, Maya Irem Ozbayoglu Sep 2025

Governing Emissions: The Global Potential Of Carbon Pricing, Maya Irem Ozbayoglu

COP30

In 2024, the world exceeded the Paris-approved 1.5 °C threshold for an entire year for the first time. This makes the issue of drastically reducing emissions worldwide ever more urgent. Despite having completed 29 UN climate summits thus far, besides ambitious pledges and agreements, such as the famous Paris Agreement signed at COP21, emissions have continued to rise. This may be because parties agree solely on a target without a complementary roadmap and/or set of policy-oriented tools which would drive the necessary changes. Hence, this paper examines the role of one concrete and relatively easy economic mechanism, namely carbon markets, …

Climate-Ready Health Systems: A Regional Strategy For Building Climate-Health Capacity In North Africa, Donia Khaled Sep 2025

Climate-Ready Health Systems: A Regional Strategy For Building Climate-Health Capacity In North Africa, Donia Khaled

COP30

North African nations are highly exposed to the climate-health crisis, facing combined risks that greatly impact vulnerable groups. These include repeated climate-related disease outbreaks, plus more heat waves and droughts. Existing health education and infrastructure aren't ready to handle these issues. A dual-track strategy to build regional climate-health capacity is proposed in this policy paper: A) integrate climate-health education into medical and public health curricula at all universities across North Africa; and B) launch a multilingual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) platform will develop health workers and students, adaptation through knowledge sharing, building local leadership, and ensuring fair access to resources. …

Capacity Building And Action For Climate Empowerment (Ace): A Technical Review, Salman Almudawib Sep 2025

Capacity Building And Action For Climate Empowerment (Ace): A Technical Review, Salman Almudawib

COP30

Capacity Building and Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) is a core pillar for climate change mitigation through people’s participation, education, and empowerment (UNFCCC, n.d.; Action for Climate Empowerment, 2025). This article describes technological and digital resources that support ACE, particularly in the COP30 environment. It also identifies inventive methods and the stumbling blocks alongside the best digital instruments that facilitate local-level empowerment, targeting innovation centers, AI education, indigenous knowledge systems, and the integration of policies (IFLA, 2025; Mbuvha et al., 2024). One of the key anticipated outcomes is the Baku-to-Belém Roadmap, aimed at mobilizing $1.3 trillion annually for climate action …

Learning Platforms: A Future In Environmental Education Or A Motionless Present?, Nazareno Calvo Sep 2025

Learning Platforms: A Future In Environmental Education Or A Motionless Present?, Nazareno Calvo

COP30

In a global context marked by the climate crisis, environmental education and training have taken a different path, adapting to current technologies. It is in these circumstances that learning platforms (from now on LP’s) emerge, changing the way we learn and perform around climate change. This type of web app can provide remote knowledge, and has taken on a growing role the last few years. However, despite their potential, challenges remain, such as inequality in digital access, poor variety of languages and cultural adaptation, a lack of media outreach, and the absence of assessments of their real impact on communities …

Global Urban Green Space Initiative For Climate Capacity Building: A Policy Blueprint For Youth, Collaboration, And Climate Action, Finley Moore Sep 2025

Global Urban Green Space Initiative For Climate Capacity Building: A Policy Blueprint For Youth, Collaboration, And Climate Action, Finley Moore

COP30

This is a policy paper recommending the implementation of a Global Urban Green Space Initiative for Climate Capacity Building (GUGSI-CCB). Following the success of the UK’s National Education Nature Parks (NENP) this paper explores how the policy could be transferred to the international stage by using the UNs Race to Zero education campaign. It highlights the policy being a method of collaboration between the north and south which national governments have failed at in recent years. The policy paper focuses on the importance of decreasing youth anxiety towards climate change, the benefit of a global database on climate change, and …

Ai – Driven Climate Modeling For Local Adaptation, Saif Ismail Sep 2025

Ai – Driven Climate Modeling For Local Adaptation, Saif Ismail

COP30

Literature review below explores how artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing climate adaptation at regional scales worldwide. As the impact of climate worsens and becomes variable, conventional region-scale models will be limited to being unsuitable in providing credible, place-based projections required by affected groups (IPCC, 2023). Emergent AI technology innovation such as physics-based machine learning to artificial data generation systems for low-resourced areas is the answer to potential remedies (Google AI, 2024). It cites two of the best leaders in today's time: Rotterdam's flood alert system from sensor networks (Deltares, 2023), and Los Angeles' city and satellite heat map project (Nature …

Silicon Sands & Swahili Shores: Coastal Climate Adaptation In Lusail City And Stone Town, Jana Ahmed Kamel

COP30

With 10% of the world’s population living in low-level coastal areas that are highly prone to erosion, they are in the midst of the climate conversation (McGranahan et al., 2007). Coastal cities in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia (MEASA) are increasingly exposed to climate-induced risks such as rising sea levels, extreme heat, and climate disasters. This paper examines two very contrasting pathways of adaptation. The first being Lusail City in Qatar, which is Qatar’s second largest city, built with the purpose of becoming a smart sustainability hub incorporating advanced engineering and digital infrastructure. Throughout the paper we slowly …

Adaptation Driven By Crisis: Leveraging Flood Risks And Policy Learning To Transform Netherlands’ Water Management Systems, Aleesha Mae Pasion Fortin Sep 2025

Adaptation Driven By Crisis: Leveraging Flood Risks And Policy Learning To Transform Netherlands’ Water Management Systems, Aleesha Mae Pasion Fortin

COP30

Current scientific research rings the warning bell: almost half of the human population experiences severe water scarcity at least half of each year, with climate-driven changes intensifying droughts, floods, and groundwater depletion. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) determines that water risks will rise rapidly with every degree of global warming (Caretta et al., 2022). The Global Commission on Adaptation argues that adaptation inaction can have astronomical economic and human expenses, while investment in water adaptation can produce high benefit-cost ratios and trillions in global net benefits (Global Commission on Adaptation, 2019). Article 7.1 of the Paris Agreement frames …
