''Thanks For The [Land] Acknowledgement, Now What?'': Settler Histories And Decolonial Futures At Cal Poly Humboldt's Schatz Tree Farm, Sangeeta Sarkar

Rou Dalagurr Food Futures

As California's newest polytechnic university, Cal Poly Humboldt is often lauded for its Indigenous-facing programming and commitments to Indigenous peoples. In recent years, Native American Studies faculty, staff, and students, alongside Indigenous community partners, have led conversations about Cal Poly Humboldt meaningfully supporting tribal sovereignty by returning land to Native nations. As Cutcha Risling Baldy summarized in a research interview, "Thanks for the [land] acknowledgement, now what?" (2024, personal interview). However, though Cal Poly Humboldt has made various land acknowledgements and references to Indigenous peoples in its university policies, conversations about #LandBack have been met with resistance from the university. …

Comparison Of Simultaneous Measurements Of Tympanic Membrane Temperature And Rectal Temperature In Cats, Kuan-Ting Ho, Shang-Lin Wang Oct 2025

Comparison Of Simultaneous Measurements Of Tympanic Membrane Temperature And Rectal Temperature In Cats, Kuan-Ting Ho, Shang-Lin Wang

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Rectal temperature (RT) is commonly used in animals to assess core body temperature. However, felines sometimes respond poorly during RT assessment. Therefore, this study compares RT and simultaneous tympanic membrane temperature (TMT) in cats. Eighty-one cats were included in the study. A digital thermometer and a human auricular infrared thermometer were used for RT and TMT measurements. RT measurement was conducted first, followed immediately by TMT measurements of the both ears. The RTs ranged from 35.9°C to 40.5°C, and the TMTs of the right and left ears ranged from 32.2°C to 39.5°C and 34.0°C to 39.5°C, respectively. The TMT of …

System And Method For Explainable Deep Learning Fraud Detection Scores, David Sutton, Mark Anderson, Piotr Skalski, Yulia Rozanova

Defensive Publications Series

The present disclosure relates to a system for explaining deep learning fraud scores. The system comprises a deep learning model configured to process a sequence of raw transaction attributes and generate a fraud score. A concept definition framework includes a programmatically defined label set capturing semantic concepts associated with transactional behaviours. Concept activation vectors (CAVs) are established for each defined semantic concept based on historical transaction data. An integrated conceptual sensitivity (ICS) mechanism combines attributions from the deep learning model to the defined semantic concepts, providing an explanation for the generated fraud score. Additionally, a hierarchical explanation interface visualizes the …

This is an updated version of the paper [14] which appeared in the proceedings of the 1979 Berlin Colloquium on Global Differential Geometry. This paper contains the original exposition together with some notes by the authors made in 2025 (as indicated in the text) that give references to descriptions of progress made in the field since the time of the original version of the paper. The main result of this paper is that every compact isoparametric hypersurface Mn ⊂ Sn+1 ⊂ Rn+2 is tight, i.e., every non-degenerate linear height function ℓp, p ∈ …

Restricted Mean Value Property On Riemannian Manifolds And Carleson's Problem On Damek-Ricci Spaces, Utsav Dewan Oct 2025

Restricted Mean Value Property On Riemannian Manifolds And Carleson's Problem On Damek-Ricci Spaces, Utsav Dewan

Doctoral Theses

One of the most key aspects of Harmonic Analysis is the study of the boundary behaviour of solutions of Partial Differential Equations. The central theme of this thesis is to study such problems for some suitable classes of Riemannian manifolds. We first study the restricted mean value property (RMVP for short) in the context of Riemannian manifolds. For a pre-compact domain D with smooth boundary in a Riemannian manifold M, we first prove that any real-valued, bounded, continuous function u satisfying the RMVP in D, having boundary limits in a full measure subset of the boundary, is harmonic in D. …

The Ruling Relations Of Care: An Institutional Ethnography Of High-Risk Prenatal Care Experiences, Nicole L. Harris Oct 2025

The Ruling Relations Of Care: An Institutional Ethnography Of High-Risk Prenatal Care Experiences, Nicole L. Harris

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Disrespect during pregnancy, labor, and delivery is common in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that approximately one in five women overall, and over 30% of Black women, report being ignored, dismissed, or verbally mistreated during their care. Public health efforts have primarily focused on individual-level interventions to improve patient-provider communication or reduce provider bias; however, these strategies have been critiqued for their limited scope and effectiveness in shifting outcomes. Instead, researchers and advocates have called for an examination of the structures that shape clinical encounters, including policies, protocols, workflows, and organizational culture. This …

The Black Community’S Appraisal Of Collective Trauma Events: Impact On Help-Seeking Behavior Intentions, Cherylle Ann Chapman Oct 2025

The Black Community’S Appraisal Of Collective Trauma Events: Impact On Help-Seeking Behavior Intentions, Cherylle Ann Chapman

ETD Collection

Collective trauma is the psychological and emotional response to shared mass tragedies that impact entire communities and large groups of people. Individuals respond to these events in different ways, depending on factors such as their socioeconomic status, previous trauma exposure, the severity of the event, and their proximity to it. The effects of mass tragedies such as natural disasters, COVID-19, or neighborhood violence are heterogeneous. Some people may withdraw or isolate, while others have been found to exhibit resilience and psychosocial improvement. While previous research has primarily investigated collective trauma within the general population, less is known about how individuals …

Racial Identification Congruence, Ethnic Identity, And Skin Tone: Implications For Well-Being In Latinx Populations, Marisol Orea Oct 2025

Racial Identification Congruence, Ethnic Identity, And Skin Tone: Implications For Well-Being In Latinx Populations, Marisol Orea

ETD Collection

Latinx individuals often navigate complex intersections of race, ethnicity, and phenotype within a sociocultural context that imposes external racial categorizations. This dissertation examines the psychological implications of racial identification congruence—the alignment between an individual's self-identified race and how others perceive them—on life satisfaction, mental health, and minority stress. Specifically, it investigates how racial identification congruence, ethnic identity, and self-identified skin tone relate to these well-being outcomes among Latinx adults. A national sample of 509 Latinx participants completed validated measures, and data were analyzed using hierarchical regression, moderation, and mediation analyses. Ethnic identity emerged as a consistent and significant predictor of …

Mosquito Classification And Explainability From Image Data Via Deep Learning Techniques, Farhat Binte Azam

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mosquitoes are the deadliest animals on Earth, responsible for more human deaths annually than any other species. Mosquito-borne illnesses continue to pose severe risks to global health. In 2015 alone, there were an estimated 214 million malaria cases worldwide. Similarly, a 2016 report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that Puerto Rico’s Department of Health received over 62,500 suspected cases of Zika, with 29,345 confirmed positive cases. In 2019, Southeast Asia experienced its worst dengue outbreak in recorded history. Of the approximately 4,500 mosquito species distributed across 34 genera, …

A Core Proposal For Budget Caring - Will The E.U. Adopt A Progressive Corporate Tax?, Domenico Imparato, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah

Articles

On 16 July 2025, the European Commission unveiled its proposed EU budget for the 2028–2034 period, representing a nearly EUR two trillion fiscal commitment for the bloc’s taxpayers – both individual and corporate. As leaked by some media outlets in the days leading up to the official announcement, the EU budget would introduce a new mechanism known as the ‘Corporate Resource for Europe’ (CORE). In the Commission’s proposal, CORE is described as a ‘financial contribution’ from the corporate sector, intended to become part of the European Union’s system of own resources. In practical terms, however, it would function as a …

Flow Structure And Mixing Near A Small River Plume Front: Winyah Bay, Sc, Usa, Christopher Papageorgiou, George Voulgaris, Alexander E. Yankovsky, Diane Bennett Fribance

Marine Science

This study presents Eulerian data from Winyah Bay, SC, USA collected during the passage of a tidal plume. The data captured the evolution and structure of the plume and include high-resolution velocity and temperature time series, supplemented by temperature - salinity profiles from a MicroCTD profiler. The observations identified a pre-existing plume extending to 4 m, with a water density of 1023.6 kg m-3, laying above denser ambient waters. Upon arrival, the newly discharged tidal plume introduced a fresher layer (1020.7 kg m-3) extending to 2.6 m, gradually thinning due to radial spreading. The plume's frontal propagation measured at 0.36 …

Formalism In Jewish Law, Chaim Saiman Oct 2025

Formalism In Jewish Law, Chaim Saiman

Faculty Publications

Scholars differ as to the degree to which Jewish law is formalistic. This chapter aims to make sense of the debate surrounding formalism in Jewish law by distinguishing between three types of legal formalism: classic formalism, modern formalism, and detail-following formalism. Viewed through the lens of modern formalism, Jewish law is likely less formalistic than commonly assumed as it is not primarily concerned with constraining decision makers. Nor is Jewish legal discourse typified by its unified conceptual schemas that proceed from abstract concepts to bottom-line decisions in the way that classical formalism proceeds. This chapter introduces an alternative framing termed …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

This review compared the efficacy and safety of immediate oral feeding (initiated within 2 hours post-operation) versus on-demand feeding following caesarean section (CS). A systematic search of electronic databases up to 20 February 2025 identified three randomised controlled trials (RCTs) including a total of 1,158 patients. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 (RoB 2) tool. Statistical analysis was performed using Review Manager (RevMan) software to calculate mean differences (MDs), standardised mean differences (SMDs), and risk ratios (RRs). Immediate oral feeding was associated with a shorter time to first bowel sounds (MD …

Police–Public Trust: Toward A More Complete Perspective, Richard A. Wise, Roger C. Mayer, Scott M. Mourtgos

Faculty Publications

Most discussion of the police–public relationship focuses on the public’s lack of trust in police. Our research suggests that police trust in the public is another important factor in this relationship and that addressing trust concerns on both sides may improve it. We conducted two studies of police trust in the public. The results suggested that the more police trust the public, the more constructive risks they take in performing their jobs. Based on our results, we highlight the importance of reciprocity and attempting to simultaneously increase both police and public trust to improve their relationship. Measures developed for these …

Student Papers, Posters & Projects

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer affects millions of women and while treatment can be lifesaving, it also has numerous side effects, including those related to sexual function, which often impact the ability to experience pleasure from sex. This study aimed to understand how breast cancer survivors define sexual activity, identify important aspects, and ascertain perceived impacts of treatment on sexual activity and function, particularly related to pleasure.

METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with women who were breast cancer survivors at least one-year post-radiation. Priority populations were oversampled (racial/ethnic/sexual/gender minorities, those aged over 65 or under 45). The sample included 23 participants: 11 …
