Ongoing Recovery Measurements In Kwinana Shelf Seagrass Meadow In Cockburn Sound 2.5 Years Post Impact Phase To Give Greater Confidence In Recovery Data And For Eia Monitoring, Nicole Said, Chanelle Webster, Simone Strydom, Kathryn Mcmahon

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Executive summary: Understanding the nature of interactions between multiple stressors is essential for assessing their cumulative impacts on seagrasses and for guiding effective management. Current dredging thresholds are based largely on single stressors (light reduction or sediment burial), despite pressures typically co-occurring, and these thresholds may therefore need refinement to account for interactive effects. In addition, recovery times under single and multiple pressures remain a major knowledge gap, further reducing our ability to accurately predict impacts and implement effective management. This need is particularly pressing in regions facing ongoing dredging pressure. Cockburn Sound, which has already lost ~75% of its …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Exercise has emerged as an effective therapeutic strategy in cancer management. Long-term supervised exercise programs, including resistance training and aerobic training, can improve body composition and physical fitness, modulate circulating factors (e.g., hormones, cytokines), enhance treatment tolerance, and reduce side effects, potentially influencing cancer progression and reducing mortality risk. Despite advancements in exercise oncology, opportunities remain to refine exercise prescription through the integration of advanced methodologies such as periodization and autoregulatory programming strategies. Periodization, a systematic approach to organizing training over time, has demonstrated benefits in general fitness and clinical populations but is underexplored in cancer care. Emerging evidence suggests …

Interhemispheric Inhibition Modifies Reaction Time Of The Index Finger, Liam C. Tapsell, Christopher Latella, Anthony J. Blazevich, Janet L. Taylor Dec 2025

Interhemispheric Inhibition Modifies Reaction Time Of The Index Finger, Liam C. Tapsell, Christopher Latella, Anthony J. Blazevich, Janet L. Taylor

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) acts between hemispheres to decrease motor cortical excitability. IHI changes during movement preparation, but it is unknown whether altering IHI, independent of other factors, alters movement initiation. For the index finger abductor muscle (first dorsal interosseous; FDI), IHI is weaker during contralateral index abduction than adduction. Thus, this study aimed to modulate IHI through contralateral contraction and measure resultant changes in reaction time. Fifteen healthy participants (age 19–39 years) completed a reaction-time task requiring brief left index finger abduction. Prior to reactions, participants started either a sustained isometric abduction or adduction contraction of the right index finger. …

Defeating Evasive Malware With Peekaboo: Extracting Authentic Malware Behavior With Dynamic Binary Instrumentation, Matthew Gaber, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Helge Janicke

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The accuracy of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in malware detection is dependent on the features it is trained with, where the quality and authenticity of these features is dependent on the dataset and the analysis tool. Evasive malware, that alters its behavior in analysis environments, is challenging to extract authentic features from where widely used static and dynamic analysis tools have several limitations. However, Dynamic Binary Instrumentation (DBI) allows deep and precise control of the malware sample, thereby facilitating the extraction of authentic behavior from evasive malware. Considering the limitations of malware analysis for use with AI, this research had two …

Explaining The Association Between Kittlitz's Murrelets (Brachyramphus Brevirostris) And Tidewater Glaciers: Which Habitat Factors Influence Spatial Distribution?, Brendan Higgins

Marine Biology

The Kittlitz’s Murrelet (Brachyramphus brevirostris) is a rare and cryptic seabird species that inhabits Alaska and Eastern Siberia. Populations of Kittlitz’s Murrelets that occur in areas with tidewater glaciers are tightly associated with tidewater glaciers and are only found in close proximity to them. The Kittlitz’s Murrelet is a species of conservation concern, but specific habitat associations are poorly understood. I conducted a multidisciplinary investigation to better understand associations between Kittlitz’s Murrelets and tidewater fjord physical structure. I used remotely sensed spectral indices to model change in abundance of suitable nesting habitat, and a long-term oceanographic dataset to quantify changes …

More Than Peyote: Trauma, Healing, And The Politics Of Indigenous Cultural Survival In The Age Of Psychedelic Colonialism, Christine Diindiisi Mccleave Dec 2025

More Than Peyote: Trauma, Healing, And The Politics Of Indigenous Cultural Survival In The Age Of Psychedelic Colonialism, Christine Diindiisi Mccleave

Indigenous Studies

This dissertation examines the intersection of peyote religion, historical trauma, and the emergent psychedelic movement through a critical Indigenous lens. Centering peyote as both a sacred medicine and a symbolic flashpoint, the study highlights how contemporary psychedelic policy, practice, and commercialization perpetuate settler-colonial paradigms and threaten Indigenous cultural survival. While mainstream narratives frame psychedelics as tools for healing, this research emphasizes how such framing often obscures deeper histories of dispossession, cultural appropriation, and epistemic violence. Using a mixed-methods approach, including 50 anonymous survey responses, 13 qualitative interviews, and a 6-person focus group, this study amplifies the voices of tribal citizens …
