Evaluation Of Two-Group Iate Coupling With Pbe For Beyond Bubbly Flows In A Large Diameter Pipe, Sungje Hong, Joshua P. Schlegel, Subash L. Sharma

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study evaluates the two-group interfacial area transport equation (2G IATE) coupled with the S-Gamma (Sγ) population balance equation (PBE) model for beyond bubbly flow regimes in a vertical large-diameter pipe. The 2G IATE framework incorporates intergroup mass transfer mechanisms and is implemented within the Sγ model, which assumes a log-normal bubble size distribution. The numerical approach is validated against experimental data from Schlegel et al. (2012), with a focus on the void fraction and interfacial area concentration (IAC) distributions. The results show that 2G IATE improves the predictions of the void fraction and IAC, although its accuracy varies with …

Teaching Digital Evangelism And Web Design As Redemptive Work For The Women Of The Northeastern Conference Of Seventh-Day Adventists, Brenda Michele Rhyne

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem.

The COVID-19 pandemic eliminated thousands of jobs, including positions held by women within the Northeastern Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. Unemployment and underemployment may contribute to diminished self-esteem and adverse mental-health outcomes. The problem of unemployment and underemployment is not simply economic—it is theological.

For women in the Northeastern Conference, the lack of an ordered pathway to explore technology-related fields as a career option represents both an economic and a spiritual loss. A course combining technical and evangelistic training may promote members' involvement in evangelistic initiatives (i.e., TMI) while simultaneously providing technological skills. Also, women who do not regularly use …

The Effect Of Sleep Environment On Sleep Quality And Behavior In Firefighters: A Cross-Sectional Study, Jacquelyn N. Zera, Erica Esper, Anna Peluso Simonson, Ashley N. Clausen, Serena Paterno

2026 Faculty Bibliography

Firefighters face high-stress occupational demands and irregular shift work that negatively impact sleep quality, which is intrinsically linked to long-term physical and psychological health. This cross-sectional study examines how the physical sleep environment (home vs. work) and station sleeping arrangements (bunk-style vs. individual dorm-style quarters) influence subjective sleep quality in this population. Sixty-six career firefighters (Age = 40.89 ± 11.05 years), completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess their sleep in both home and fire station environments, with data analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Ranks and Mann–Whitney U tests. The results reveal significant differences (p < 0.001), with sleep duration, efficiency, subjective quality, and global PSQI scores all performing significantly better at home than at work. Notably, no significant differences were found between bunk-style and dorm-style sleeping quarters at the station. These findings suggest that firefighters experience poorer sleep while on duty regardless of room design, indicating that operational stressors like call volume and nocturnal arousal may be more influential on sleep quality than the physical arrangement of sleeping quarters, and could inform organizational policies and wellness programs aimed at reducing occupational fatigue.

A Field Test Of The Role Of Biofluorescence In Territorial Salamanders, Kasey Watterson, Cari-Ann M. Hickerson, Carl Anthony

2026 Faculty Bibliography

Biofluorescence is recognized as an important form of visual communication, yet its function remains largely untested in many terrestrial species. In Eastern Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus), fluorescence of the postcloacal gland is a sexually dimorphic trait most strongly expressed in males. Because fluorescence can be displayed during territorial contests, we hypothesized that fluorescence in male P. cinereus would be positively related to resource holding potential (RHP) of territorial residents in the field. To test this hypothesis, we examined the relationship between fluorescence and two separate variables: body condition (as a proxy for RHP) and territory quality (the expected payoff from …

Interfaith Transposed: Interfaithlessness In The Age Of Religious Exit, Kristen Tobey Jan 2026

Interfaith Transposed: Interfaithlessness In The Age Of Religious Exit, Kristen Tobey

2026 Faculty Bibliography

This article examines so-called interfaithless initiatives in the United States, in which exes from different high-demand religious groups participate together as they navigate the difficult process of religious exit. Sustained attention is focused on an Interfaithless Beach Party held regularly between 2014 and 2022. I argue that associating interfaithlessness with interfaith becomes legible by thinking of interfaithlessness not as peripheral to but rather as a transposition of interfaith. Indeed, these are examples of interfaith encounter at its best, showing not just proximity between exes from different religions, but meaningful interreligious exchange that complicates assumptions about the growing nonreligious population in …

The Effect Of Second-Order Slip In Hydromagnetic Eyring-Powell Flow: A Bvp4c Study, Ch. Maheswari, B. Naga Lakshmi, G. Dharmaiah, R. Mohana Ramana, B. Reddappa

Mansoura Engineering Journal

The steady-state Eyring–Powell boundary layer fluid flow past a moving surface is examined, considering various parameter implications. These include the wall mass transfer parameter (0.5  C   2.0), the magnetic field parameter (5  Mn 20), the velocity ratio parameter (0.1  λ1  0.7), Eyring-Powell fluid parameters (0.5 K 2 & 0.1 E 0.4), as well as the first-order velocity slip (0.1 γ 1.1) and second-order velocity slip (0.1 δ  0.4). By employing appropriate similarity transformations, the PDEs are reduced to a set of non-linear ODEs, which are subsequently solved using the bvp4c numerical technique and, an implication of key factors on shear …

Hall Current And Nth Order Chemical Reaction Effects On Unsteady 3d Mhd Williamson Nanofluid Flow With Thermophoresis And Brownian Motion Over An Inclined Stretching Sheet, Polavarapu Sudheer, Ramachandra Reddy Vaddemani, Raghunath Kodi

Mansoura Engineering Journal

This study examines the influence of Hall current and nth-order chemical reaction on unsteady three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) Williamson nanofluid flow over an inclined stretching sheet. The model incorporates thermal radiation, heat source, Brownian motion, and thermophoresis effects. The governing nonlinear partial differential equations are transformed into a system of ordinary differential equations using similarity transformations and solved numerically using the shooting method with a fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. The results indicate that an increase in the magnetic parameter significantly reduces velocity profiles while enhancing temperature and concentration distributions. The Hall parameter reduces surface drag and improves heat transfer, while decreasing mass …

1-D And 2-D Hadamard Transformations For Protein Sequence Analysis, Esraa A. Ahmed, Abed M. Nasr, Marwa A. Abd Elwahaab

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Similarity/dissimilarity studies follow alignment-based or alignment-free methods. Many alignment-free methods involve selecting physicochemical properties. Most previous articles don’t explain their criteria for choosing the properties used. These heuristic approaches have, by definition, undeterministic and unreliable performance. Hence, there is a need for a powerful proxy for similarity/dissimilarity by a deterministic, reliable approach.

In this study, a physicochemical property is selected by a multi-criteria sequential selection process. The amino acids composing any protein sequence are replaced with their values of the chosen property to produce a discrete signal in the time domain.  The one-dimensional discrete Hadamard transforms our signal from the …

Design, Optimization, And Techno-Economic Analysis Of A Standalone Pv-Wind-Battery Microgrid For A Remote Load In Kurdistan Region Of Iraq, Harwan Mohammed Taha, Laith Akram Mohammed

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Standalone microgrids play a crucial role in rural areas where grid electricity delivery is difficult and expensive. This research verifies the effectiveness of a standalone microgrid in a rugged area, Pers Mountain in Akre district, Duhok governorate, Iraqi Kurdistan. A first hybrid renewable energy system (HRES)-based standalone microgrid is presented to supply a remote load. Solar and wind energy are employed for their reliability, sustainability, and abundance, with battery storage ensuring continuous power when solar and wind are unavailable. Simulation results demonstrate reliable power supply during summer months (loss of power supply probability < 5%), with the system operating across three modes — PV-dominant daytime, combined wind-battery evening, and battery-discharge nighttime. The inverter achieved minimum total harmonic distortion of 1.53% for both current and voltage outputs, below the IEEE 519 limit. A full-year hourly particle swarm optimization (PSO) sizing analysis assessed annual reliability and each source's economic contribution: the original fixed sizing yields an annual loss of power supply probability (LPSP) of 26.80% (expected energy not served ~1,471 kWh/year), motivating a PSO-optimized PV-battery configuration achieving annual LPSP of 5% (~274 kWh/year unserved) at comparable cost. The site's wind resource is reasonable (13.8% capacity factor), but the fixed tower and controller cost outweighs its contribution at this small scale. The proposed HRES totals $11,960–$16,317 depending on configuration, approximately 28–38 times lower than grid extension ($455,600) to the site, while producing zero CO₂ emissions and avoiding approximately 4,189 kg/year versus an equivalent HOMER Pro-simulated diesel generator.

Framing Inclusive Heritage Urbanism Reconfiguring Publicness In Mosque-Centered Precincts In Historic Cairo, Ghada Sayed Ghazala

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Mosque-centered precincts in historical cities face a continuous tension between touristic-led redevelopments, security management policies and urban life of commons. Recently in Historic Cairo state-led interventions occur in major mosque-centered settings with upgrading intent by enhancing visual order, crowd control and visitors’ experience, yet socio-spatial inclusivity stayed insufficiently incorporated in those implications. This study discourses this gap by initiating the Heritage Socio-spatial Inclusivity Framework (HSIF) to assess inclusivity across major mosque-centered realms – AL-Hussein Mosque & Al-Sayida Zeinab Mosque precincts -

HSIF synthesized urban design & heritage conservation concepts through indicators covering aspects like communal livability, users experience, governance & …

Mansoura Engineering Journal

Accurate classification of ultrahigh carbon steel (UHCS) microstructures is essential for elucidating processing-structure-property relationships and enhancing material performance. While convolutional neural networks (CNNs) offer powerful automated classification, navigating their complex, high-dimensional hyperparameter spaces present a significant computational bottleneck. To advance automated materials characterization, this study proposes a metaheuristic-tuned deep learning approach for robust and efficient microstructure classification. Two architectures, VGG16 and MobileNetV2, were evaluated under both pretrained and fine-tuned configurations, with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) applied for systematic hyperparameter tuning. Results show that GA substantially improves the performance of fine-tuned VGG16, achieving …

Herbivore Offense In Plant–Herbivore Coevolution, Xosé López-Goldar Jan 2026

Herbivore Offense In Plant–Herbivore Coevolution, Xosé López-Goldar

Faculty Publications – Biological Sciences

Coevolution between plants and herbivores has been proposed as a major evolutionary force that resulted in their radiation and diversification. Plants have evolved a broad array of strategies that directly or indirectly avoid, repel, deter, or kill herbivore attackers. These include (but not limited to) tolerance to damage through compensatory growth of tissue lost from herbivory, resistance via physical and chemical defenses, induced responses, and avoidance through reduced apparency or phenological mismatch. In response, herbivores have evolved adaptations to circumvent, resist, detoxify, and even use plant defenses for their own benefit (e.g. sequestration). These include anatomical, physiological, and behavioral adaptations, …

Conceptualizing The Receipt Of Unfair School Discipline Through A Betrayal Trauma Lens, Charles Bell, Alexia Angton, Sarah Franklin, Michayla Mack, Pavel Ahmed

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

We contribute to the literature on school discipline by investigating why some Black students, parents, and advocates perceived particular punishments as unfair. Using Betrayal Trauma Theory (BTT) as a framework, we conducted qualitative interviews with twelve Black parents and five community activists who assisted Black children throughout the school discipline process and perceived such punishments as unfair. We also interviewed four Black children who received punishments at school that they perceived as unfair. Participants reported that instances of unfair school punishment created barriers to graduation, criminalized Black students, and permitted victimization to occur on school grounds.
