Feasibiity And Acceptability Of Tele-Neurology Services At A Regional Tertiary Referral Centre: A Prospective Study., Fazal Yakub

Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine

Background: Neurological diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide with a great burden lying in Sub-Saharan Africa. The paucity of neurologists in the region makes neurological care disproportionately inaccessible. Utility of tele-medicine is low cost, time efficient, convenient, reducing the carbon footprint and ultimately increasing health care access. Objective: We identified whether the concept of tele-neurology was feasible within our setup for patients with stable neurological diseases while establishing the cost effectiveness, efficiency, convenience and the carbon footprint burden. Methods: We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study. New patients were triaged by the neurologist based on guidelines from …

Deep Learning In Sports Prediction, Fan Lee May 2022

Deep Learning In Sports Prediction, Fan Lee

Computer Science Honors Theses

Sports prediction has always been an interesting problem in the entertainment industry. Many data scientists have come out different methods on this problem. We hope to see how well a neural network model can predict an individual game outcome and the final ranking on NBA data. We examined the possibility of different unbiased deep learning models can perform as well as other mathematics methods. We were also looking for what types of data are more influential for the models. Then, we can make some assumptions on our models and the other sports prediction methods.

On Uniqueness And Stability For The Boltzmann-Enskog Equation, Martin Friesen, Barbara Ruediger, Padmanabhan Subdar May 2022

On Uniqueness And Stability For The Boltzmann-Enskog Equation, Martin Friesen, Barbara Ruediger, Padmanabhan Subdar

Faculty Publications

The time-evolution of a moderately dense gas in a vacuum is described in classical mechanics by a particle density function obtained from the Boltzmann-Enskog equation. Based on a McKean-Vlasov equation with jumps, the associated stochastic process was recently constructed by modified Picard iterations with the mean-field interactions, and more generally, by a system of interacting particles. By the introduction of a shifted distance that exactly compensates for the free transport term that accrues in the spatially inhomogeneous setting, we prove in this work an inequality on the Wasserstein distance for any two measure-valued solutions to the Boltzmann-Enskog equation. As a …

Midbrain dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) neurons regulate motivated behaviors, including feeding, but less is known about how these circuits may interact. In this study, we found that DA neurons in the mouse ventral tegmental area bidirectionally regulate the activity of 5-HT neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), with weaker stimulation causing DRD2-dependent inhibition and overeating, while stronger stimulation causing DRD1-dependent activation and anorexia. Furthermore, in the activity-based anorexia (ABA) paradigm, which is a mouse model mimicking some clinical features of human anorexia nervosa (AN), we observed a DRD2 to DRD1 shift of DA neurotransmission on 5-HTDRN neurons, which …

Crop landraces have unique local agroecological and societal functions and offer important genetic resources for plant breeding. Recognition of the value of landrace diversity and concern about its erosion on farms have led to sustained efforts to establish ex situ collections worldwide. The degree to which these efforts have succeeded in conserving landraces has not been comprehensively assessed. Here we modelled the potential distributions of eco-geographically distinguishable groups of landraces of 25 cereal, pulse and starchy root/tuber/fruit crops within their geographic regions of diversity. We then analysed the extent to which these landrace groups are represented in genebank collections, using …

The Potential For Bias Across Gps-Accelerometer Combined Wear Criteria Among Adolescents, Maura M. Kepper, Amanda E. Staiano, Stephanie T. Broyles

Population and Public Health Science Faculty Publications

Physical activity has many health benefits, yet a large portion of our population is not meeting recommendations. Using accelerometry and global positioning systems (GPS) to accurately measure where people are active and to identify barriers and facilitators of activity across various settings will inform evidence-based policies and interventions to improve activity levels. Criteria for sufficient accelerometry data (e.g., number of days, minimum hours in a day) to accurately monitor free-living physical activity in adults and children have been widely studied, implemented, and reported by researchers. However, few best practice recommendations for researchers using GPS have been established. Therefore, this paper …

Around 80% of megaflora species became extinct at the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary. Subsequent polyploidy events drove the survival of thousands of plant species and played a significant historical role in the development of the most successful modern cereal crops. However, current and rapid global temperature change poses an urgent threat to food crops worldwide, including the world’s big three cereals: rice, wheat, and maize, which are members of the grass family, Poaceae. Some minor cereals from the same family (such as teff) have grown in popularity in recent years, but there are important knowledge gaps regarding the similarities and differences …

Precise determination of ground-state feeding in the β decay of fission products is an important but challenging component in modeling reactor antineutrino flux and reactor decay heat. The Modular Total Absorption Spectrometer (MTAS) is a versatile NaI(Tl) detector array that determines the true β-decay pattern free from the pandemonium effect, including precise ground-state feeding intensities. In this paper, we report MTAS results of the β feeding intensities of Rb88 and Kr88, fission products with large cumulative yields in nuclear reactors. By comparing MTAS results with previous measurements, Rb88 provides a validation of MTAS's ability to determine ground-state feedings in β …

The Ne18(α,p)Na21 reaction plays a significant role in Type-I X-ray bursts. It is a major path in the breakout from the hot-CNO cycles to the synthesis of heavier elements in the αp- and rp-processes. An experiment to determine the cross section of this reaction was performed with the ANASEN active-target detector system, determining the cross section at energies between 2.5 and 4 MeV in the center-of-mass frame. The measured cross sections for reactions populating the ground state in Na21 are consistent with results obtained from the time-inverse reaction, but significantly lower than the previously published experimental data of direct measurements. …

Zoos and natural history museums are both collections-based institutions with important missions in biodiversity research and education. Animals in zoos are a repository and living record of the world's biodiversity, whereas natural history museums are a permanent historical record of snapshots of biodiversity in time. Surprisingly, despite significant overlap in institutional missions, formal partnerships between these institution types are infrequent. Life history information, pedigrees, and medical records maintained at zoos should be seen as complementary to historical records of morphology, genetics, and distribution kept at museums. Through examining both institution types, we synthesize the benefits and challenges of cross-institutional exchanges …

Faculty Publications

To accelerate the high value-added usage of agricultural residue, cellulose and cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) were extracted from wheat straw and then formed into all-cellulose nanocomposite films. The acid–alkali method (AM) and the extraction method (EM) were respectively adopted to prepare wheat straw cellulose (WSC), and the TEMPO oxidation method was used to extract CNFs. The nanocomposite films were fabricated by dissolving WSC and adding different CNF contents of 0.0, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0%. There was a better miscibility for the all-cellulose nanocomposite film prepared by EM (Composite-E) compared to that for the all-cellulose nanocomposite film prepared by AM (Composite-A). Composite-E …

Fact Or Fiction?: (Mis)Representations Of Crime, Race, And Gender In Popular True Crime Podcasts, Lauren E. Frederick

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Storytelling has long been used to socialize future generations. As a form of storytelling, podcasting has rapidly expanded through the true crime genre. Existing literature on such podcasts is limited by its focus on listeners and conceptual definition of “true crime.” This study applied content analysis to 10 randomly selected true crime podcast episodes from 2012-2021, which were inductively coded and analyzed using critical race theory and feminist theory. Findings indicate podcasters applied stereotypical tropes of race and gender to perpetrators and victims, which do not always reflect demographics in crime statistics. Specifically, women were at times victimized as well …

It is no secret that many of our current scientific and medical advancements stem from a long history of research, trials, and experimentation, but not enough is known about the origins of our routine practices. The Holocaust enabled Nazi doctors to explore countless victims in search of the ultimate answer to the Jewish question. The answer: to alleviate the burden that those deemed “unworthy of life” placed on the greater society. The mass extermination practices which highlight the atrocities of the Holocaust are the end result of constant scientific developments disguised as medicine. Tiergarten 4 (T4) serves as the beginning …
