INTRODUCTION
Functional avoidance treatment planning allows radiation oncologists to intentionally minimize radiation dose to higher-functioning lung areas while favoring radiation dose towards lower-functioning regions. This treatment planning method has been shown to reduce pulmonary toxicity for patients receiving radiation therapy. Functional lung information, traditionally ventilation or perfusion SPECT scans, is required to plan for functional avoidance.

Intraoperative Map, Vasopressors, And Opioids In Tf-Tavr Patients Undergoing Conscious Sedation Vs General Anesthesia, Brett J Friedman, Patrick Karabon, Wei C Lau

Posters

INTRODUCTION
Aortic stenosis is a progressive narrowing of the aortic valve that can cause serious cardiovascular harm such as syncope, heart failure, and death if left untreated. Transfemoral-transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TF-TAVR) emerged in the last 10 years as an alternative for previously inoperable, high-risk patients. Studies suggest that monitored anesthesia for TF-TAVR using minimalist conscious sedation results in better outcomes (e.g., shorter length of stay, lower 30-day mortality) when compared to general anesthesia. However, there is a gap in knowledge of why conscious sedation is more successful. Recent studies have demonstrated the association of intraoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) …

Impact Of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome On Cardiovascular Disease In Obese Female Youth, Collin R. Walentine, Michael R. Brennan, Kristen J. Nadeau, Melanie Cree-Green

Posters

INTRODUCTION
17% of youth in the United States are obese and the incidence is rising. Among obese adolescents, girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) represent a vulnerable and understudied group. PCOS is strongly associated with dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in adulthood, but studies of CVD in youth are limited. We hypothesized that obese youth with PCOS would show evidence of vascular dysfunction relative to girls with obesity without PCOS.

It is necessary to understand patients’ preferences regarding various factors that impact their medical care in order to foster an effective health care environment. The primary goal of this study is to determine how patients’ care teams impact the ways in which they make decisions regarding their medical treatment. A secondary goal is to determine the individuals, both inside and outside of the health care setting, that …

Automated Filament Inking For Multi-Color Fff 3d Printing, Eammon Littler May 2022

Automated Filament Inking For Multi-Color Fff 3d Printing, Eammon Littler

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

We propose a novel system for low-cost multi-color Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D printing, allowing for the creation of customizable colored filament using a pre-processing approach. We developed an open-source device to automatically ink filament using permanent markers. Our device can be built using 3D printed parts and off-the-shelf electronics. An accompanying web-based interface allows users to view GCODE toolpaths for a multi-color print and quickly generate filament color profiles. Taking a pre-processing approach makes this system compatible with the majority of desktop 3D printers on the market, as the processed filament behaves no differently from conventional filaments. Furthermore, inked …

A Self-Regulating System For Assessing Scientific Predictive Power, Ted C. Rogers May 2022

A Self-Regulating System For Assessing Scientific Predictive Power, Ted C. Rogers

Physics Faculty Publications

I propose a method for tracking and assessing scientific progress using a prediction consensus algorithm designed for the purpose. The protocol obviates the need for centralized referees to generate scientific questions, gather predictions, and assess the accuracy or success of those predictions. It relies instead on crowd wisdom and a system of checks and balances for all tasks. It is intended to take the form of a web-based, searchable database. I describe a prototype implementation that I call Ex Quaerum. The main purpose of the present document is to motivate the project, to explain it's underlying philosophy, to explain the …

An Investigation Of The Interactions Between Tumor-Related Factors, Functional Connectivity Measurements, And Neurologic Function In A Mouse Brain Tumor Model, Inema Epere Orukari May 2022

An Investigation Of The Interactions Between Tumor-Related Factors, Functional Connectivity Measurements, And Neurologic Function In A Mouse Brain Tumor Model, Inema Epere Orukari

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Due to advances in clinical medicine, more children currently diagnosed with a brain tumor become long-term survivors after treatment than in previous decades. As the number of long-term survivors of pediatric brain tumors increases, clinicians and caretakers focus more attention on improving the quality of life of these patients. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of long-term survivors of pediatric brain tumors have cognitive deficits, which reduce their quality of life. Cognitive tests prior to therapy are critical for accurately assessing a patient’s risk of cognitive decline because they provide a pre-treatment baseline for assessing how host, tumor, and treatment factor interact …

Optimizations In The Mri-Guided Adaptive Radiation Therapy Workflow: Towards Mr-Only Rt, Sven Olberg May 2022

Optimizations In The Mri-Guided Adaptive Radiation Therapy Workflow: Towards Mr-Only Rt, Sven Olberg

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Technological developments in external beam radiation therapy (RT) made in the past decades have been largely focused on the tight integration of imaging systems and therapy delivery systems in order to enable the precise delivery of therapeutic doses of radiation to internal, complexly shaped targets. Along this line, the adoption of x-ray computed tomography (CT) in the RT workflow and the combination of volumetric cone-beam CT with linacs in the clinical setting brought the practice of image-guided RT (IGRT) to the forefront. Practical limitations related to the poor soft tissue contrast of these x-ray imaging modalities prompted the adoption of …

Women And Dada: Reimagining Dada Through The Work Of Beatrice Wood And Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Violet E. Webster May 2022

Women And Dada: Reimagining Dada Through The Work Of Beatrice Wood And Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Violet E. Webster

Student Theses and Dissertations

This paper serves to investigate the relationship between the Dada art movement of the early twentieth century and the progression of the women’s liberation movement through the life and works of female Dada artists Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Beatrice Wood. My thesis combines the emergence of modernism and Dada’s utilization of new industrial materials with the reappropriation of material significance seen in Taeuber-Arp’s multi-media work. The first section “Dada Overview” contextualizes both Dada and the post-Victorian evolution of the early twentieth century. In “Beatrice Wood’s Expansion of the Subject” I show how Wood’s work centered around the subconscious narrative of women …

Defining The Structural And Functional Organization Of Elfn1, Manan Patel May 2022

Defining The Structural And Functional Organization Of Elfn1, Manan Patel

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Interactions involving Extracellular Leucine-Rich Repeat And Fibronectin Type III Domain Containing 1 (ELFN1) and Extracellular Leucine-Rich Repeat And Fibronectin Type III Domain Containing 2 (ELFN2) proteins are important for establishing synaptic properties. Specifically, metabotropic glutamate receptor 6 (mGluR6) is a G Protein-Coupled Receptor (GPCR) that trans-synaptically binds to presynaptic leucine-rich repeat (LRR) ELFN1. ELFN1 has also been reported to anchor mGluR6 across retinal synapses thus highlighting the need to explore the effects of ELFN1 on mGluR signaling and pharmacology, as the interactions on these properties are largely unknown. Another important aspect of research involves establishing the necessity for both ELFN1 …

Investigating Consumption Behavior In Mice Following Chemogenetic Activation Of Stress-Responsive Neurons, Matthew Pacheco May 2022

Investigating Consumption Behavior In Mice Following Chemogenetic Activation Of Stress-Responsive Neurons, Matthew Pacheco

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

Stress is a common factor dealt with in everyday life. Neural circuits activated by stressful stimuli respond in a variety of ways, one being decreased food consumption. Evidence suggests that decreased consumption can be observed in mice following restraint stress. This behavioral response has been associated with the activation of neurotensin (Nts)-expressing neurons projecting from the lateral septum (LS) to the lateral hypothalamus (LH). By using chemogenetic techniques to activate LS neurons that respond to stress, my thesis project seeks to establish to what extent stress-responsive neurons in the LS are involved in the decrease of food consumption.

A Review Of The Current Literature Regarding The Effectiveness Of Psychedelics In Treatment-Resistant Psychiatric Disorders, Emmy Weisenberg May 2022

A Review Of The Current Literature Regarding The Effectiveness Of Psychedelics In Treatment-Resistant Psychiatric Disorders, Emmy Weisenberg

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2020 - Present

In recent years, the numbers of psychiatric cases have nearly doubled. While some treatments options are available, an increase in the prevalence of treatment-resistant mental health disorders represent a need to develop other therapeutics for maladaptive behavioral management. Currently, the serotonergic psychedelic LSD, ketamine, psilocybin, and MDMA in the micro-dosing form are being investigated for their efficacy in the treatment-resistant individuals. Ongoing trials indicate that not only are psychedelics efficacious and safe in the micro-dosing form, but this form of medication may provide both immediate and long-term relief. There is evidence to show that all four aforementioned hallucinogens are capable …
