The Cetacean Sanctuary: A Sea Of Unknowns, Jason N. Bruck Jan 2024

The Cetacean Sanctuary: A Sea Of Unknowns, Jason N. Bruck

Faculty Publications

Housing cetaceans in netted sea pens is not new and is common for many accredited managed- care facilities. Hence, the distinction between sanctuary and sea pen is more about the philosophies of those who run these sanctuary facilities, the effects of these philosophies on the animals’ welfare, and how proponents of these sanctuaries fund the care of these animals. Here, I consider what plans exist for cetacean sanctuaries and discuss the caveats and challenges associated with this form of activist-managed captivity. One goal for stakeholders should be to disregard the emotional connotations of the word “sanctuary” …

The Second Founding And Self-Incrimination, William M. Carter Jr. Jan 2024

The Second Founding And Self-Incrimination, William M. Carter Jr.

Northwestern University Law Review

The privilege against self-incrimination is one of the most fundamental constitutional rights. Protection against coerced or involuntary self-incrimination safeguards individual dignity and autonomy, preserves the nature of our adversary system of justice, helps to deter abusive police practices, and enhances the likelihood that confessions will be truthful and reliable. Rooted in the common law, the privilege against self-incrimination is guaranteed by the Fifth Amendment’s Self-Incrimination and Due Process Clauses. Although the Supreme Court’s self-incrimination cases have examined the privilege’s historical roots in British and early American common law, the Court’s jurisprudence has overlooked an important source of historical evidence: the …

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty Publications and Presentations

The underrepresentation of women and the perpetuation of gender stereotypes in children's literature has long been a concern. This study examined the portrayal of women in children's picture books and the potential of interactive read-alouds to promote gender equity in early childhood education, with the aim of shedding light on gender inequality. This study used critical discourse analysis, theoretically informed by Rosenblatt's transactional theory and gender schema theory, to analyse 19 books and interactive read-aloud sessions between preservice teachers and children in six preschools. The results showed that books on women's inequality are discussed in three categories: the absence of …

Dielectric Permittivity Of Pzt 95/5 Ferroelectric Ceramics And 0.27pin-Pmn-0.26pt Single Crystals Under Pulsed High Electric Fields, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Christopher S. Lynch Jan 2024

Dielectric Permittivity Of Pzt 95/5 Ferroelectric Ceramics And 0.27pin-Pmn-0.26pt Single Crystals Under Pulsed High Electric Fields, Sergey I. Shkuratov, Jason Baird, Vladimir G. Antipov, Christopher S. Lynch

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dependence of the dielectric permittivity of ferroelectric materials on electric field magnitude impacts the performance of ferroelectric devices. In a ferroelectric generator, a shock wave travels through the ferroelectric element and depolarizes it, and surface charges are released from the element electrodes, resulting in the generation of a megawatt power level for several microseconds. The dielectric properties of the compressed and uncompressed zones of the ferroelectric element affect the generated voltage and energy. The results of previous studies indicate that the low-field dielectric permittivity of poled Pb0.99(Zr0.95Ti0.05)0.98Nb0.02O3 (PZT 95/5) ferroelectrics in the uncompressed zone differs significantly from the high-field …

Hung Out To Try: A Rule 29 Revision To Stop Hung Jury Retrials, Elijah N. Gelman Jan 2024

Hung Out To Try: A Rule 29 Revision To Stop Hung Jury Retrials, Elijah N. Gelman

Northwestern University Law Review

How many times can a defendant be retried? For those facing hung jury retrials, it’s as many times as the government pleases. Double jeopardy prohibitions do not apply when juries fail to reach a verdict.

There is, theoretically, a built-in procedural solution to stop the government from endlessly retrying defendants. Rule 29 of the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure allows judges to acquit defendants when “the evidence is insufficient to sustain a conviction.” Considering that a hung jury indicates the jurors could not agree on the sufficiency of the evidence, defendants facing hung jury retrials are prime candidates for this …

Sentence Served And No Place To Go: An Eighth Amendment Analysis Of "Dead Time" Incarceration, Christopher B. Scheren Jan 2024

Sentence Served And No Place To Go: An Eighth Amendment Analysis Of "Dead Time" Incarceration, Christopher B. Scheren

Northwestern University Law Review

Although the state typically releases incarcerated people to reintegrate into society after completing their terms, indigent people convicted of sex offenses in Illinois and New York have been forced to remain behind bars for months, or even years, past their scheduled release dates. A wide range of residency restrictions limit the ability of people convicted of sex offenses to live near schools and other public areas. Few addresses are available for them, especially in high-density cities such as Chicago or New York City, where schools and other public locations are especially difficult to avoid. At the intersection of sex offenses …

Data Is What Data Does: Regulating Based On Harm And Risk Instead Of Sensitive Data, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2024

Data Is What Data Does: Regulating Based On Harm And Risk Instead Of Sensitive Data, Daniel J. Solove

Northwestern University Law Review

Heightened protection for sensitive data is becoming quite trendy in privacy laws around the world. Originating in European Union (EU) data protection law and included in the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, sensitive data singles out certain categories of personal data for extra protection. Commonly recognized special categories of sensitive data include racial or ethnic origin, political opinions, religious or philosophical beliefs, trade union membership, health, sexual orientation and sex life, and biometric and genetic data.

Although heightened protection for sensitive data appropriately recognizes that not all situations involving personal data should be protected uniformly, the sensitive data approach is …

Occupational Therapy’S Opportunity To Impact Care At The End Of Life, Macey Genzlinger, Mackenzie L. Feldhacker

Student Journal of Occupational Therapy

Navigating and managing the end of life can be difficult. The focus of occupational therapy in care at the end of life is to aid the patient and caregiver through these challenges by facilitating improved safety, comfort, and quality of life through the participation in meaningful occupations. Despite the ways that occupational therapy benefits these patients, occupational therapy involvement in care at the end of life is misunderstood, under-researched, and underutilized. There is a general lack of awareness regarding this topic and a stigma that occupational therapy focuses only on rehabilitation and therefore does not belong in care at the …

Spatio-Temporal Association Rule Mining Of Traffic Congestion In A Large-Scale Road Network Based On Trajectory Data, Qifan Zhou, Haixu Liu, Zhipeng Dong, Yin Xu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: A K neighbor-RElim (KNR) algorithm and a sequential KNbr-RElim (SKNR) algorithm are proposed to mine traffic congestion association rules and congestion propagation spatio-temporal association rules by vehicle trajectory data in a large-scale road network. The KNR algorithm extends the spatial topology constraint based on the RElim algorithm. The KNR can be used to mine the road links prone to congestion from the large-scale trajectory dataset in a large-scale road network and quantify the strength of association for congested road links. The SKNR algorithm expands the time dimension in the form of sliding window and can be applied for mining …

Action Recognition Model Of Directed Attention Based On Cosine Similarity, Chen Li, Ming He, Chen Dong, Wei Li Jan 2024

Action Recognition Model Of Directed Attention Based On Cosine Similarity, Chen Li, Ming He, Chen Dong, Wei Li

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the lack of directionality of traditional dot product attention, this paper proposes a directed attention model (DAM) based on cosine similarity. To effectively represent the direction relationship between the spatial and temporal features of video frames, the paper defines the relationship function in the attention mechanism using the cosine similarity theory, which can remove the absolute value of the relationship between features. To reduce the computational burden of the attention mechanism, the operation is decomposed from two dimensions of time and space. The computational complexity is further optimized by combining linear attention operation. The experiment is divided …

Firstly, the digital twin models are built based on mechanism analysis and combined with small sample data of typical conditions, ensuring interpretability and generalization performance. Secondly, based on the recursive subspace identification method, the refinement model is built and updated online in real time to compensate for the modeling error, improving …

Heterogeneous Multi-Ant Colony Algorithm Combining Competitive Interaction Strategy And Eliminatingreconstructing Mechanism, Chen Feng, Xiaoming You, Sheng Liu Jan 2024

Heterogeneous Multi-Ant Colony Algorithm Combining Competitive Interaction Strategy And Eliminatingreconstructing Mechanism, Chen Feng, Xiaoming You, Sheng Liu

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: The traditional ant colony algorithm has many problems in convergence and diversity when solving the traveling salesman problem (TSP). Therefore, this paper proposes a heterogeneous multi-ant colony algorithm that combines the competitive interaction strategy and the eliminating-reconstructing mechanism (CEACO) to overcome these shortcomings. Firstly, the algorithm uses a competitive interaction strategy, which adjusts the interaction period adaptively according to the Hamming distance of different groups in different periods. Competition coefficients are adopted to differentiate matching interaction objects for interaction. The matched objects interact with each other through the optimal solution and pheromone matrix. This mechanism achieves a balance between …

Result Validation Method Of Simulation Models Based On Piecewise Feature Extraction, Yucheng Luo, Ming'en Zhang, Fei Liu, Yingbo Lu, Feng Ye

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Verification, validation, and accreditation (VV&A) is a key means to ensure the credibility of simulation models, and model validation is the core link. In view of the unavailability of reference data, various sources of reference data, and strong subjectivity of expert validation in the result validation of the missile flight simulation model, a result validation method for the missile flight simulation model based on piecewise feature extraction of time series was proposed. Specifically, a comprehensive piecewise linear method for time series was first proposed. The method consisted of a linear piecewise algorithm based on the second-order derivative for extracting …
