Hagfish Intermediate Filament Proteins: From A Natural Protein System To Functional Biomaterials, Oran Wasserman, Kristin K. Durrant, Katee Stromberg, Brianne E. Bell, Paula E. Oliveira, Justin A. Jones

Biology Student Research

Sourcing protein-based biomaterials directly from nature presents persistent challenges in scalability, processing, and batch-to-batch variability. Recombinant engineering has focused largely on spider silks, and hagfish intermediate filament (HIF) proteins remain a comparatively unexplored alternative, with small non-repetitive subunits that have been produced full-length at high yield. This review examines the biology of naturally produced HIF protein threads from the Pacific hagfish, Eptatretus stoutii, advances in recombinant expression and purification, and their translation into functional biomaterials. We first describe the tripartite domain architecture and biochemical classification of the threonine-rich α- and γ-keratin-like subunits, and then the defensive biomechanics of HIF …

Intimate partner violence (IPV) among LGBTQ+ individuals differs from experiences of cisgender heterosexual individuals. LGBTQ+ individuals report higher rates of IPV and face unique dynamics related to their minority gender and sexual identities, such as identity-related abuse. Guided by the Minority Stress Theory, this study is based on the premise that stigma associated with sexual and gender minority identities contributes to an increased risk of IPV as well as poorer mental health outcomes. Using a convergent mixed-methods design, this study explored the experiences of IPV and related impact on mental health outcomes, namely symptoms of depression and suicide risk, in …

The Impact Of Environmental Exposures On Cystic Acne: A Narrative Review, Angela Vaysman, Morgan Ulczak, Carly Achterberg, Lucas Goetz, Luke Atwood, Reed Hildenbrant, Erin Hallman, Caitlyn Shaughnessy, Karen Vo

Student Publications

Cystic acne is a severe inflammatory dermatological condition traditionally associated with genetic, hormonal, and microbial factors. Although environmental exposures may contribute to acne pathogenesis, the role of airborne agricultural irritants remains underexplored. Agricultural environments contain a complex mixture of organic dusts, pesticides, fertilizers, volatile compounds, and animal-derived particulates that may influence skin barrier integrity and inflammatory responses. This narrative review examines the potential relationship between airborne agricultural exposures and cystic acne by integrating evidence from dermatology, environmental health, and immunology. Particular attention is given to mechanisms through which agricultural irritants may disrupt epidermal barrier proteins, including filaggrin and claudins; promote …

Innovation Ecosystem Model To Achieve Sustainability In Palm-Oil Biofuel Development In Indonesia, Fanny Rahmadhitya, Avanti Fontana, Ignatius Heruwasto

Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development

Achieving sustainable expansion of Indonesia’s palm-oil biofuel sector requires overcoming two interconnected challenges: ecological limits on feedstock expansion and weak translation of research into industry adoption. Although innovation ecosystem research emphasizes multi-actor collaboration, existing innovation ecosystem research provides limited understanding of how governance and innovation intermediation can bridge these gaps in the palm oil biofuel sector. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, the study draws on 12 semi-structured interviews with key policymakers, industry practitioners, and researchers, analyzed using constructivist grounded theory (CGT) and triangulated with policy documents and a structured comparison with Malaysia. The findings reveal two interconnected bottlenecks. First, …

Xylem water isotope values are widely used to trace plant water sources. However, the sampling decisions that precede extraction are rarely fully reported in isotope studies, limiting reproducibility and cross comparisons. A survey of 42 researchers across five continents, complemented by a virtual community workshop, revealed substantial methodological diversity: only 51% maintain standard operating procedures, with variation in organ selection among respondents (branches 73.8%, stems 64.3%, roots 35.7%), sapwood-heartwood separation (63.2% separate), bark removal (59% always) and transport conditions (56% ice packs vs. 39% ambient). From the surveyed researchers, 77.5% adapt sampling strategies to their extraction system, but these adaptations …

Wilson's Phalarope, A Migratory Bird, Depends On The Declining Great Salt Lake, William Christenson, Kendall Becker, Spencer J. Good, T.J. Clark-Wolf, Scott Hotaling

All Current Publications

This fact sheet describes how declining water levels and increasing salinity degrade habitat for brine flies and other prey Wilson’s phalaropes rely on. Because human use drives low water levels, changes to water management could reverse the lake’s decline and improve habitat quality for Wilson’s phalaropes and other species that depend on the Great Salt Lake.

Computing The Greatest Common Divisor Of Binomial Coefficients C(Mn, Mk), Chai Wah Wu Oct 2026

Computing The Greatest Common Divisor Of Binomial Coefficients C(Mn, Mk), Chai Wah Wu

Communications on Number Theory and Combinatorial Theory

The greatest common divisor (GCD) of C(2n,2k) for 1 ≤ k < n is known to be some power of 2 times the product of all odd primes p such that 2n = pi + pj. We complete the analysis of this GCD by showing that its 2-adic valuation is at most 1 and relates it to Mersenne primes. We also show how to efficiently compute GCD {C(mn,mk) : 1 ≤ k < n} when n and m satisfy certain conditions.

Right To The Library: Following Urban Planning Away From Stakeholder Theory, Jaime Taylor

Urban Library Journal

In the field of urban planning,  a well-established and growing body of discourse encourages reconsideration of stakeholder theory. Like urban planning, librarianship has been using stakeholder theory nearly since the theory’s inception, with its prevalence accelerating since the mid-1990s. However, compared to planning, librarianship’s use of stakeholder theory has been undertheorized; in three decades, there have not been meaningful advances or critiques of stakeholder theory’s place in library management. This article will review the advent of stakeholder theory in the business management literature; distill urban planning’s criticism of the theory and ideas for moving past it; and suggest what from …

Palmar Cooling As A Thermoregulatory Intervention: Mechanistic Basis And Implications For Exercise And Clinical Applications, Robert J. Heins, William E. Reisinger Iv, Brett Norris, Robert S. Rogers Oct 2026

Palmar Cooling As A Thermoregulatory Intervention: Mechanistic Basis And Implications For Exercise And Clinical Applications, Robert J. Heins, William E. Reisinger Iv, Brett Norris, Robert S. Rogers

Student Publications

During exercise, rising metabolic heat production creates competition for blood flow between skeletal muscle and the cutaneous vasculature. The resulting redistribution elevates cardiovascular (CV) strain and accelerates fatigue, particularly during environmental heat stress or in individuals with impaired thermoregulatory capacity. Strategies that enhance heat dissipation without further burdening CV function may therefore improve exercise tolerance. Palmar cooling (PC) is an intervention that targets the glabrous skin of the hands, where dense arteriovenous anastomoses facilitate high-flow, low-resistance blood flow and efficient convective heat exchange, thereby augmenting systemic heat dissipation through the peripheral circulation. Evidence in healthy and athletic populations suggests that …

Use Of Standard Visual Education Tools To Improve Npo Compliance In Pediatric Day Surgery, Alma Rivera

EBP Fellowship

Practice Problem Non-compliance with perioperative fasting (NPO) instructions is an ongoing safety and operational challenge in pediatric day surgery. Day-of-surgery cancellations result in financial losses, with unproductive OR time costing $1,430-$2,025 per hour. NPO violations cause 4.5% - 13.6% of lost OR time in children's hospitals and are the third leading cause of elective surgery cancellations. At our pediatric hospital, NPO violations contribute to same-day surgical delays and cancellations, particularly in the high-volume Otolaryngology (ENT) service line. This Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) project sought to answer whether, among caregivers of pediatric patients scheduled for ENT Day surgery (P), implementing a health …

Teachers report that using Portuguese strategically enhances understanding, reduces student anxiety, and fosters engagement. Participants highlighted a lack of formal training in translanguaging during their teacher preparation program, leading them to rely on autonomous …

Production And Optimization Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (Phas) By Corynebacterium Variabile M11: A Newly Reported Phas-Producing Bacterium, Mary S. Khalil, Mariam K. M. Zarif, Mahmoud S. M. Mohamed Oct 2026

Production And Optimization Of Polyhydroxyalkanoates (Phas) By Corynebacterium Variabile M11: A Newly Reported Phas-Producing Bacterium, Mary S. Khalil, Mariam K. M. Zarif, Mahmoud S. M. Mohamed

Baghdad Science Journal

Polyhydroxyalkanoates are a family of biopolymers that accumulate inside microorganisms as primary storage polymers in response to nutrient stress. This family of biopolymers can be used as bioplastics instead of synthetic plastics because it biodegrades into CO2 and H2O. This study aimed to isolate a new bacterial strain that can accumulate PHAs when cultured under unbalanced nutrient conditions of excess carbon and a depleted nitrogen source. Screening for PHAs accumulating bacterial isolates was based on culturing the bacteria on minimal salt medium containing Nile red as a fluorescent dye. Positive PHAs bacterial colonies displayed bright orange fluorescence …

Baghdad Science Journal

The increased surface area-to-volume ratio and improved biological properties of nanoparticles have made them highly attractive for biomedical applications. In the present study, the cytotoxic effects of Cu, Curcumin, and the Curcumin–Cu complex were evaluated against A549 lung cancer cells using the MTT assay. Molecular docking demonstrated that the Curcumin–Cu complex exhibited the strongest binding affinity toward the HRAS protein (PDB ID: 6MQT), forming multiple hydrogen and ionic interactions with key active-site residues, suggesting a potential interaction with this therapeutic target. Bioinformatics analysis further identified HRAS as a highly expressed cancer-related gene in A549 cells and a key regulator of …

From Protest To Form: Translating Venezuelan Resistance Into Architectural Form, Estefany S. Gomes Oct 2026

From Protest To Form: Translating Venezuelan Resistance Into Architectural Form, Estefany S. Gomes

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Political unrest in Venezuela has continuously redefined the relationship between power and space. Protest reveals that collective action is inherently spatial. As movement consolidates into collective action, it reorganizes territory and redefines how space is used and occupied. What appears as an event can be understood as a constructed condition shaped by direction, pressure, and intensity. In this sense, protest operates as a temporary architecture formed through motion and presence.

This thesis investigates the spatial intelligence embedded in protest and explores how it can be translated into architectural form. Protests reorganize space through compression and release. They unfold through phases …

Valuing Carbon And Ecosystem Services To Guide Policy Decisions For The Transboundary Al-Hwezeh Marsh, Haider S. Abid, Nadheer A. Fazaa, Mark J. Whittingham, Mahdi Ahmad, Ibrahim Bahr Alolom

Baghdad Science Journal

Al-Hwezeh Marsh, a transboundary freshwater wetland in southeastern Iraq at the Iran border, is one of 40 UNESCO World Heritage sites globally designated for both cultural and natural value. Despite this status, the marsh has undergone severe degradation since the 1970s due to upstream regulation of the Tigris and Karkheh Rivers and local economic pressures from oil extraction and agriculture. Cross-border management efforts, coordinated by Bahr Al-Uloom Foundation, aim to promote sustainable restoration. This study supports these efforts by estimating the economic value of ecosystem services and carbon stock under different marsh area scenarios, integrating cultural, natural, and economic dimensions. …

Effects Of Sowing Date, Water Deficit, And Potassium And Sodium Silicate On Yield And Quality Traits Of Faba Bean (Vicia Faba L.), Mohammed Moatasem Arif Alrawi, Wafaa Ali Hussein

Baghdad Science Journal

Faba bean production in Iraq is becoming much harder due to climate change. Arid environments in the region suffer from a combination of low rainfall, outdated irrigation networks, and extreme heatwaves, all of which directly suppress final crop productivity. As a protein-rich legume of high nutritional and economic value, faba bean requires effective agronomic strategies to maintain yield and quality under stress conditions. This study evaluated, under field conditions during the 2023–2024 growing season in Iraq, the interactive effects of three sowing dates (September, October and November), two deficit irrigation regimes (80% and 60% of the full irrigation control), and …

A Distributional Synoptic Perspective On The So-Called “Historical Present” Tense Of Mark’S Gospel, Oliver Glanz Oct 2026

A Distributional Synoptic Perspective On The So-Called “Historical Present” Tense Of Mark’S Gospel, Oliver Glanz

Andrews University Seminary Studies (AUSS)

The Greek “historical present” (HP) tense phenomenon is often presented in textbooks and grammars as a literary feature that authors use in historical narrative texts to bring a sense of vividness to the reader. As if the historical distance of the “pastness” of the narrated event is overcome and the reader is brought—like in a time machine—into the presence of the event narrated. Even though this concept of the so-called Greek HP has been contested, if not rejected by some Greek scholars, it is often taught in seminaries and NT Greek textbooks. The absence of a consensus about the function …

Treating The Trauma Beneath The Violence: A Reappraisal Of Intimate Partner Violence Perpetrator Interventions, Huda S. Shaikh, Vanessa Cordoba

Journal for Social Work Scholar-Practitioners

Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a global public health emergency with little meaningful reduction in prevalence over the past two decades, despite extensive micro-level interventions targeting perpetrators through batterer intervention programs (BIPs) and legal accountability mechanisms (Arce et al., 2020; Babcock et al., 2004; Shetty, 2025; WHO, 2025). Using a macro social work and epistemological lens, this paper argues that the IPV field and judicial systems, particularly in the United States, have relied on an outdated and largely reactive paradigm that obscures the trauma histories of perpetrators, neglects intergenerational and neurobiological mechanisms, and perpetuates epistemic injustice toward both survivors and …
