The Possibility Of Using Barley Grains Extract As An Acidic Corrosion Inhibitor For Carbon Steel, Bashar Alhaidar, Fidaa Reeshah, Yousef Jammoal
Baghdad Science Journal
The effect of barley seed extracts on the corrosion of carbon steel in 1M hydrochloric acid at different temperatures was investigated from the perspective of their potential use as green inhibitors in the cleaning and descaling processes in heat exchangers. A 50% ethanol/water (vol) solution was used for extraction. Two extraction methods were used: soaking and ultrasound. The inhibition mechanism of the inhibitor that gave the best efficiency was investigated by studying the adsorption and corrosion processes by electrochemical methods (potentiodynamic polarisation (Tafel curves) and electrochemical resistance spectroscopy) and thermodynamic calculations. The results of the study showed no effect of …
Without Due Process Of Law: The Dobbs Decision And Its Cataclysmic Impact On The Substantive Due Process And Privacy Rights Of Ohio Women, Jacob Wenner
Journal of Law and Health
Since the overturning of prior abortion precedents in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, there has been a question on the minds of many women in this country: how will this decision affect me and my rights? As we have seen in the aftermath of Dobbs, many states have pushed for stringent anti-abortion measures seeking to undermine the foundation on which women’s reproductive freedom had been grounded on for decades. This includes right here in Ohio, where Republican lawmakers have advocated on numerous occasions for implementing laws seeking to limit abortion rights, including a 6-week abortion ban advocated …

Unconscionability & Involuntary Arbitration Agreements: The Systemic Exploitation Of Immigrant Labor In The United States, Isabel Ortega-Romero
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the inadequacy of the doctrine of unconscionability in protecting immigrant workers from exploitation through unfair contracts and arbitration agreements. It advocates for legal reforms, including the regulation of arbitration agreements and the recognition of unconscionability as a tort, to address these issues.

What Factors Within The Context Of A Romantic Relationship And The Couple’S Finances Are Related To The Level Of Religiosity Among Contemporary Emerging Adults?, Brandan E. Wheeler, Joe D. Wilmoth, Tommy M. Phillips, Cecilia Brooks
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Research has identified the beneficial nature of spirituality/religiosity towards people’s general, psychological, and relational well-being despite a decline in religiosity among Americans, particularly among the younger generations. Research also suggests religiosity influences important relational factors, such as entering cohabiting relationships, but that these relational factors may also influence participants’ level of religiosity in a reciprocal effect. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to explore how demographic, relational, and financial factors influence young adults’ level of religiosity within the context of a romantic relationship and the couples’ finances. Results from the current study suggest the length of the relationship …

A Mindful And Sustainable Eating Intervention To Improve Attitudes Related To Mindfulness, Sustainability, And Fruit And Vegetable Consumption In Elementary Schools, Amy Schachtner-Appel, Heejung Song
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Excessive plate waste is generated in elementary school cafeterias. Adapting nutrition promotion strategies to target waste reduction and encouraging mindful and sustainable eating (MSE) are possible strategies to encourage students to reduce waste during school lunch. Farm to Tray, Tray to Farm is a 16-week intervention that aims to encourage elementary school students to develop mindful and sustainable eating behaviors. An educational curriculum was delivered to eight 5th-grade students, who served as peer leaders and disseminated messages throughout the school. Additional strategies included cafeteria reinforcements and opportunities for food recovery. A pilot test of the program was conducted in two …

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
In this article, we describe the process we adopted in designing a financial education intervention situated within the cultural and systemic realities of structural racism in Black communities and offer new insights on conducting financial education that addresses healing from ethno-racial trauma. We adopted a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach and assembled a Community Led Advisory (CLA) group to discuss how to address social and economic inequalities in teaching financial education. Specifically, we sought to address the psychological consequences of racism, income scarcity, and other forms of economic distress and what it means for people’s lives and their everyday ability …

Securing Securities: Political Risk, Sovereign Debt, And The Anglo-American Financial Power Transition, Michael Lee
Publications and Research
Under what conditions do countries lose their status as the leading global financial center? Some scholars argue that such shifts follow shortly after transitions in the distribution of other key capabilities (e.g. GDP), while others argue that path dependence or other more bespoke capabilities might be able to sustain financial leadership long after decline in other capabilities. This paper aims to understand the causes of the Anglo-American financial transition. I argue that the ability to manage political risk for investors is critical to the position of countries as financial entrepôts. In the case of British financial leadership, I argue that …
Right, Left, Right: Dance Training Impacts On Postural Control, Mackenzie Griffith
Right, Left, Right: Dance Training Impacts On Postural Control, Mackenzie Griffith
Longwood Senior Theses
Background: Studies have shown a lack of definitive findings examining postural control amongst dominant and non-dominant stance limbs. Neuromuscular training may have limb dependent impacts and is a possible contributor across dance training, other athlete training, and active population members. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare postural control between dominant and nondominant single limb stances in trained dancers and compare those results with the single limb postural control of recreationally active college females. Methods: The study recruited 18 participants who met the set criteria for one of two groups: recreationally active females (N=10) and female dancers (N=8). …

The (Dis)Advantages Of Device Free Time: A Mixed -Methods Digital Detox Study, Sandrah Burrill
Longwood Senior Theses
Digital detox practices are periods of device restriction, reduction, or abstinence aimed to seek improvements in the negative outcomes associated with frequent device use. There are numerous gaps in digital detox literature including unsustainable periods of detox, imprecise definitions of digital detox, a lack of investigation into mediating mental health constructs, no collection of participant-driven qualitative data, and a failure to control for compensatory behaviors. Gaps like these could account for continued mixed findings in areas like anxiety, depression, and life satisfaction, salient to mental well-being. The present study aims to further parse the role that device-free time plays in …

Diachronic Demographic Patterns Of Enslaved People At Mulberry Hill, Quincey Urban
Diachronic Demographic Patterns Of Enslaved People At Mulberry Hill, Quincey Urban
Longwood Senior Theses
The Atlantic Slave Trade was responsible for forcibly importing captive Africans to North and South America as enslaved laborers for white plantation owners. This process acted as a catalyst for the creolization of enslaved African communities inside plantations across the Americas. This research thesis discusses the diachronic demographics of one such plantation community, Mulberry Hill, located in Charlotte County, Virginia. The goal is to determine which of the enslaved Africans were brought to the planation directly from Africa, and which ones were acquired from existing plantations in the Americas. The specific combination of these sources for Mulberry Hill’s enslaved community …
Multigenerational Consequences Of Environment And Loss On Maternal Behavior, Anxiety, Boldness, And Memory In Rats, Alayna Palamar
Multigenerational Consequences Of Environment And Loss On Maternal Behavior, Anxiety, Boldness, And Memory In Rats, Alayna Palamar
Longwood Senior Theses
Maternal behavior has long been studied for the implications it presents for offspring outcomes. In the present study, we examined the interplay between the positive effects of environmental enrichment and the negative consequences of loss – defined as a 50% litter cull – on both mothers and their offspring. In this multigenerational study, maternal Sprague Dawley rats were separated into one of four of the following conditions: enriched/control, enriched/loss, standard/control, and standard/loss. Maternal rats (P generation) were assessed using the following behavioral assays: Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) for anxiety-like behavior and boldness, Object Location Maze (OLM) for spatial memory, and …

Nonparametric Identification Of A Mems Resonator Actuated By Levitation Forces, Mohammed Abdel Razzaq, Rodrigo T. Rocha, Yu Tian, Shahrzad Towfighian, Sami F. Masri, Mohammad I. Younis
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
This work presents nonparametric identification of a Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) beam subjected to a non-classical nonlinear electrostatic (levitation) force. The approach is based on the Restoring Force Surface method and the Chebyshev polynomials. The study examines the main challenges associated with the used approach as applied to small-scale systems, such as the inability to measure the restoring force and acceleration. In this work, we use a mix of analytical techniques, experimental data, and Lagrange polynomial interpolation to estimate the restoring forces of the system and its nonlinearities. The extracted results are compared with the measurements, which show excellent agreement. Results …
Nondelegation And The Legislative Versus Administrative Exactions Divide: Why Legislatively Imposed Exactions Do Not Require A More Searching Standard Of Review, Hunter Dominick
Fordham Law Review
As the United States continues to grow and urbanize, local governments have tried to manage this growth to mitigate the external impacts that new developments can cause. One method by which state and local governments seek to control growth within their borders is by imposing conditions on the issuance of building permits—otherwise known as exactions. Exactions, however, face federal constitutional limits under the Takings Clause of the Fifth Amendment, which applies to state and local governments through the Fourteenth Amendment.
In Nollan v. California Coastal Commission and Dolan v. City of Tigard, the U.S. Supreme Court restricted exactions in …

Fluorescence Microscopy With Deep Uv, Near Uv, And Visible Excitation For In Situ Detection Of Microorganisms, Noel Case, Nikki Johnston, Jay Nadeau
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
We report a simple, inexpensive design of a fluorescence microscope with light-emitting diode (LED) excitation for detection of labeled and unlabeled microorganisms in mineral substrates. The use of deep UV (DUV) excitation with visible emission requires no specialized optics or slides and can be implemented easily and inexpensively using an oblique illumination geometry. DUV excitation (<280 >nm) is preferable to near UV (365 nm) for avoidance of mineral autofluorescence. When excited with DUV, unpigmented bacteria show two emission peaks: one in the near UV ∼320 nm, corresponding to proteins, and another peak in the blue to green range, corresponding to …280>

Robot Proficiency Self-Assessment Using Assumption-Alignment Tracking, Xuan Cao
Robot Proficiency Self-Assessment Using Assumption-Alignment Tracking, Xuan Cao
Theses and Dissertations
A robot is proficient if its performance for its task(s) satisfies a specific standard. While the design of autonomous robots often emphasizes such proficiency, another important attribute of autonomous robot systems is their ability to evaluate their own proficiency. A robot should be able to conduct proficiency self-assessment (PSA), i.e. assess how well it can perform a task before, during, and after it has attempted the task. We propose the assumption-alignment tracking (AAT) method, which provides time-indexed assessments of the veracity of robot generators' assumptions, for designing autonomous robots that can effectively evaluate their own performance. AAT can be considered …
Rethinking Federal Inducement Of Pretext Stops, Farhang Heydari
Rethinking Federal Inducement Of Pretext Stops, Farhang Heydari
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Few topics in policing have received more attention than pretextual traffic stops—traffic stops made for crime-fighting purposes. Community leaders, legislators, police executives, and even presidents have recognized that the overuse of pretext stops has deleterious effects, including racially disparate enforcement, needless death, and degraded public trust in law enforcement. The result is a growing movement at the state and local level to roll back the widespread use of this tactic.
As promising as these developments are, most discussions of pretext stops largely omit a key player that drives the problem: the federal government. Presidents from Bush to Biden have decried …

Honors Thesis
Concussions have a significant impact on teenagers and young adults. Most concussions occur when participating in sports. Therefore, the focus is on high school and college athletes for this review. Over the years many new concussion studies and protocols have been implemented and removed. Concussions are head injuries, where the person has suffered trauma causing the brain to shift and receive damage. This typically impacts brain tissue and a variety of symptoms results. Concussions were traditionally not considered with the same severity as broken bones or bloody wounds. Head injuries can have extreme effects on the body and daily living …
Otherization And Healthcare: A Philosophical Analysis Of Gender-Based Discrimination In Medicine, Rachel M. Beare
Otherization And Healthcare: A Philosophical Analysis Of Gender-Based Discrimination In Medicine, Rachel M. Beare
Honors Thesis
Healthcare interactions are a core feature of medical practice and medicine cannot function without these relationships. Moreover, the physician-patient relationship within healthcare have revealed varying problems that arise within the interpersonal interactions. These problems were even more concerning when they showed gender discrimination occurring within medical interactions, such as workplace discrimination of female physicians, higher risk of misdiagnosing and mortality of female patients, and an overall medical culture that invalidated women. Understanding the extent of these problems was achieved through analyzing philosophical structures presented within the philosophical writings of G. W. F. Hegel and Simone de Beauvoir. Application of Hegel’s …
