Deportation By Deception: Coerced Administrative Voluntary Departures And The Illusion Of Choice, Fonda Pham
Deportation By Deception: Coerced Administrative Voluntary Departures And The Illusion Of Choice, Fonda Pham
Washington and Lee Law Review Online
Administrative voluntary departure allows noncitizens facing removal to leave the United States by waiving their right to a hearing before an immigration judge. Although this process provides noncitizens with a quicker alternative to a lengthy removal hearing, the process is not always as “voluntary” as its name suggests. Over the past four decades, noncitizens have alleged that immigration officers threatened and intimidated them in order to obtain waivers of consent, including threats against family members, prolonged detention, and physical abuse. Although the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution states that all persons physically present in the U.S. must receive due process …

“I’M A Biracial Person Who Looks White In A Black Man’S Rap Game”: Exploring Expressions Of Multiracialized Masculine Vulnerability In Logic’S “Everybody”, Matthew Oware
Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications
The field of Black vulnerability studies includes analyses of Black men rap artists’ sexual debut, romantic relationships, mental stress, self-medication, and suicidal thoughts. I expand this analysis to Black-white mixed-race men who express emotional vulnerability regarding their racial identities. Using a case study of the song “Everybody” by Logic—a Black and white, mixed-race man—I find that Logic expresses joy and pride in his Black and biracial identity. Similarly, I observe that he expresses anger and frustration toward those who question, dismiss, or degrade his Black and biracial identities, a pattern paralleled in research on multiracial individuals. By analyzing his radio …

Bridging The Nature Gap In Urban Communities, Hayley Allison, Jacobo Barriga, Sarah Beier, Hunter Moore, Joe Wheelock
Cities and the Environment (CATE)
Bridging The Gap is the largest local environmental nonprofit serving the greater Kansas City metro, actively engaging thousands of community members, planting thousands of trees, and stewarding thousands of acres of natural areas across both sides of the state line. Despite existing in a sprawling two-state metropolitan area where functional habitat on public land is often fragmented, degraded, or lost entirely, parks and natural areas across Kansas City still report upwards of four million visitors every year. City, county, and state public landowners, like conservation agencies and parks departments, often have limited capacity to effectively steward and improve urban green …

Dual Helix Drive For High-Level Technological Self-Reliance And Self-Improvement: Systematic Interaction Between Strategic Scientists And The Chinese Spirit Of Scientists, Jianqiang Li, Side Hu
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
Achieving high-level technological self-reliance and self-improvement necessitates the cultivation of commensurate strategic soft power. This study aims to elucidate how strategic scientists and the Chinese spirit of scientists, through deep-seated “systematic interaction”, form a “dual helix engine” that propels the national innovation system toward an advanced stage. Drawing on complex adaptive systems theory, a three-layer dynamic interaction model is constructed comprising “value internalization–organizational empowerment – ecological co-evolution”. The findings indicate that strategic scientists serve as the personified carriers and strategic executors of the Chinese spirit of scientists. Through paradigm guidance, institutional creation, and cross-boundary catalysis, they translate spiritual values into …

Murine Typhus In Georgia: Historical Context And A Probable Case Of Resurgence Where Previously-Thought Eradicated, Giovanni Mella-Velazquez, Christopher He, Bolanle Akinsola, Judson Miller
Journal of the Georgia Public Health Association
Background: Murine typhus, caused by Rickettsia typhi, is a flea-borne illness historically endemic to the southeastern United States, with initial cases reported in Atlanta, Georgia in 1913. Following vector control efforts, incidence declined significantly, and the disease was removed from the nationally notifiable disease list in 1987. While recent cases have been reported in select regions, murine typhus has not been documented in Georgia for decades. We present a pediatric case in Atlanta that may represent the first reported instance in nearly 40 years, suggesting possible reemergence in the Southeast.
Methods: We conducted a case report analysis of a pediatric …

Industrial safety question answering requires access to the exact source material that supports an answer, not merely a related document. This study evaluates the retrieval stage of a local retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system at the source page level. Eighteen documents on lockout/tagout, machine guarding, and personal protective equipment were prepared in raw, cleaned, and metadata-enriched forms. Best Matching 25 (BM25), latent semantic analysis (LSA), and reciprocal rank fusion (RRF) hybrid retrieval were tested on 54 questions: 36 answerable, 12 safety-related but unsupported, and 6 outside the covered topics. Raw BM25 achieved the highest mean reciprocal rank (0.492) and Hit@5 (0.722), …

Cmsi Translations #37: The Technical Evolution And Future Development Of Chinese Navy’S Third Generation Conventional Submarine, Yin He
CMSI Translations
While construction of the Type 039A submarine was underway, the Chinese Navy, guided by anticipated technological developments in future conventional submarines, its own operational requirements, and the potential threats it faced, initiated research/development and improvement efforts for a new generation of submarine technologies. By around 2010, several key technologies and systems required for these new submarines had achieved breakthroughs or completed development, clearing the obstacles for commencing construction of the new Type 039B. At the same time, this marked the beginning of the large‑scale production of the Chinese Navy’s core conventional submarine force for the 2020s.

A Pick-The-Winner Design Framework For Two-Arm Randomized Clinical Trials, Wanni Lei, Vernon M. Chinchilli, Xi Kathy Zhou
A Pick-The-Winner Design Framework For Two-Arm Randomized Clinical Trials, Wanni Lei, Vernon M. Chinchilli, Xi Kathy Zhou
COBRA Preprint Series
We propose a general pick-the-winner design framework for two-arm randomized clinical trials with binary and continuous endpoints that meets prespecified type I error rate and power requirements for winner selection. Traditional two-group comparison tests often require sample sizes that are impractical in early phase trials. Existing pick-the-winner designs offer an efficient alternative but generally emphasize the probability of correct selection rather than explicit control of type I and II error rates for winner selection. Our framework comprises four components: pick-the-winner-based hypotheses, winner selection strategies, definitions of type I error rate and power for winner selection, and design calibration. It accommodates …

Constructing The Cyber Workforce Gap: Measurement And Its Consequences, Ryan Straight
Constructing The Cyber Workforce Gap: Measurement And Its Consequences, Ryan Straight
Journal of Cybersecurity Education, Research and Practice
Cyber workforce-gap figures steer federal strategy, industry advocacy, and the growth of educational programs. Rather than estimating the U.S. gap, this review examines how the estimates are made: through job-posting analytics, survey-based estimation, and federal accounting, each of which must assume its way from instrument to labor market. A census of this journal's complete run illustrates what those figures underwrite in one venue: of 176 items published across eleven years, 51 invoke a labor-market workforce claim, 46 treat it as settled fact, and only one, an editorial, interrogates it. Meanwhile, the producers and auditors of those figures have diverged. Between …
Leading The Way: Dsws In Organizational And Social Work Leadership, Lisa A. Street, Rebecca S. Beeler
Leading The Way: Dsws In Organizational And Social Work Leadership, Lisa A. Street, Rebecca S. Beeler
Journal for Social Work Scholar-Practitioners
Social workers are often overlooked for positions in organizational leadership. Although social workers dominate the workforce in many human services organizations, leadership positions are commonly held by those with general management or other degrees. The lack of educational preparation and formal training in leadership and a lack of leadership presence in the field have been deemed a social work leadership crisis. Yet, social workers possess unique skillsets that can translate well into strong organizational leadership—if properly cultivated, promoted, and pursued. With the resurgence of the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree, now is a prime opportunity for more social workers …
Lost On The Moon: A Classroom Activity For Bringing Group Processes To Life, Christin L. Munsch, Allison Lena, Kay Sassan
Lost On The Moon: A Classroom Activity For Bringing Group Processes To Life, Christin L. Munsch, Allison Lena, Kay Sassan
Feminist Pedagogy
This teaching activity reviews key concepts in group processes and introduces students to Expectation States Theory (EST) and Status Characteristics Theory (SCT), two micro-sociological frameworks that explain how inequality of opportunity emerges in task-oriented small groups with consequences for unequal outcomes. The activity is built around a team-building exercise “Lost on the Moon” in which participants rank 15 survival items individually and then in small groups. We adapt this exercise by taking field notes on group interactions and drawing on these notes to facilitate a discussion in which students critically reflect on their interactions with one another. We close the …
"Two Different Histories": Lgbtq Educator Identity In An Era Of Policy Precarity In Further Education, Liberty Heath-Tavener
"Two Different Histories": Lgbtq Educator Identity In An Era Of Policy Precarity In Further Education, Liberty Heath-Tavener
Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education
In Zadie Smith’s debut novel White Teeth (2000) she writes: ‘every moment happens twice: inside and outside, and they are two different histories.’ (p. 532) Although this notion related to the struggles of global majority people in Britain after decolonisation, I liken it to the concept of identity for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer (LGBTQ) educators within further education, where their internal thoughts, feelings and reality are often in conflict with external norms, ideals and policies, all of which are geared towards heteronormativity and cisnormativity. Lakoff and Johnson (1980) argue that metaphors transcend rhetorical devices and are an essential …

How The Labor Movement And Labor Strife In Northwest Ohio In The 1930s Shaped The Structure Of American Labor, David M. Savino
The Journal of Economics and Politics
The labor disputes of the 1930s involved more than just the traditional relationship between management and labor. In a way, these disputes were more about long-term gains and the realization of industrial labor achieving real power and influence versus gaining short-term outcomes such as wage increases and better working conditions. For over a century, craft unionism dominated the American system regarding representation, influence, and immense control over the economy, society, and the political system. At about the same time, many industrial-type unions were forming and evolving. Many of the monumental struggles of industrial and agricultural unions took place within the …

A Tale Of Two States: Abortion Referenda In The Aftermath Of Dobbs, Shauna Reilly, Ainsley Boggs, Tanner Freeman
The Journal of Economics and Politics
Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturned the access to abortion that had been established with Roe v Wade. As a result, states had autonomy to make statewide policies on this issue. Some states chose complete bans, some partial bans, and others provided continuing access to abortion. This article explores the dueling referenda of 2022 and 2023 in Kentucky and Ohio, respectively, following the Dobbs decision in 2022. Voters in both states voted to continue to permit abortion access in their states, yet access in each state is different. Using case studies, we examine the political nuances and electoral aftermath …
