An Exploration Of Misophonia In The Literature, Megan E. Singer Jul 2024

An Exploration Of Misophonia In The Literature, Megan E. Singer

Honors Projects

Misophonia is a disorder that elicits an extreme negative reaction to specific auditory and visual stimuli. Triggering stimuli, which are often human produced, provoke an array of symptoms including heightened negative emotions along with autonomic nervous system responses. Despite being a relatively common disorder, misophonia is still inadequately recognized and is often classified under conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and anxiety. No cure for misophonia currently exists, but there are many treatments and coping mechanisms used by people with misophonia to ease their symptoms. This comprehensive review synthesizes current research on misophonia, exploring underlying mechanisms, comorbidities, diagnostic methodologies, and treatment …

The findings of this research are as follows: 1.) The location of the honors program building, Niemeyer Learning and Living Center, provides a barrier for students to feel included within the program; 2.) There is a negative stereotype of honors students that can cause stress on honors students; 3.) Students …

The Hidden Monetary State, Gabriel Rauterberg, Joshua Younger Jul 2024

The Hidden Monetary State, Gabriel Rauterberg, Joshua Younger

Faculty Scholarship

Money is a motley. While the state enjoys a monopoly on issuing new physical currency, a variety of instruments serve money-like roles in the financial system. The commercial banking system significantly augments the money supply through issuing deposits. Alongside it, a shadow banking system has also developed, offering a range of deposit substitutes.

This Article seeks to cast new light on the U.S. financial system by exploring how, over the course of the twentieth century, federal policymakers engaged in a series of distinct and largely uncoordinated monetary experiments. As we show through historical case studies, federal authorities designed, promoted, and …

Digital Catharsis Or Harmful Exposure? A Thematic Analysis Of Self-Directed Violence Reddit Posts, Lindsay A. Lundeen, John R. Mccall, Amanda Sams Bradshaw, Erika L. Leblanc, Lizy Humphrey

Counseling, Leadership, and Research Methods Faculty Publications and Presentations

Many feel uncomfortable discussing self-directed violence with individuals in their social circle, often leading to concerned posts on social media. Previous studies address self-harm, suicide, and nonsuicidal self-injury; however, minimal literature combines suicide and nonsuicidal self-injury to explore common themes representing self-directed violence. This study identified themes from suicide and self-harm subreddit communities, with themes common to each subreddit comprising themes of self-directed violence. Using 1,989 Reddit posts from suicide and self-harm communities, we employed an inductive thematic analysis to explore how users discussed self-directed violence within anonymous online communities. Ultimately, the impact of using Reddit for discussion of self-directed …

The Impact Of Pac-Loaded Polymer Membrane Thickness On Chloroform Removal And Comparison Of Solvent And Thermal Membrane Regeneration Methods, Yizhi Hou, Brooke K. Mayer

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Powdered activated carbon (PAC) has better adsorption performance than granular activated carbon (GAC) and is widely used in water purification. In most cases, PAC is dosed into water directly, then precipitated as sludge, and landfilled. In this study, PAC was mixed with a polymer and dissolved in dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent to form a PAC-loaded membrane, which was then tested for chloroform removal. The chloroform adsorption capacity of the PAC membrane increased with increasing membrane thickness because of higher carbon loading. However, regardless of membrane thickness, the flux of the PAC membranes was similar since flux resistance predominantly occurred at the …

A Market Mechanism For The Creation Of A Climate-Differentiated Market In The Steel Industry, Laura Garcia Cancino, Perrine Toledano

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

The heavy industry sector, a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions, is at a critical juncture. Accounting for 25% of total CO2 emissions annually, this sector is poised to see an increased demand for materials through 2050, particularly from developing countries focused on infrastructure expansion and transitions toward net-zero emissions. However, the sector's dependency on high-emission technologies, notably in steelmaking, underlines the pressing need for a swift and decisive shift to low-emission alternatives.

Our latest publication under the COMET initiative, A Market Mechanism for the Creation of a Climate-differentiated Market in the Steel Industry, introduces a twofold market mechanism specifically …

Climate Impact Screening And Reporting: A Venture Capital Perspective, Ajay S. Jagdish, Perrine Toledano, Ana M. Camelo Vega

Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment

According to the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) Net-Zero Scenario, about one-third of the emissions reductions needed by 2050 depend on technologies that are currently in development. Additionally, climate adaptation finance faces an even larger investment gap.

The Climate Venture Capital community must demonstrate tangible climate impact to truly earn its reputation.

However, accurately and reliably screening, evaluating, and monitoring climate impact is challenging, with many metrics and methods still needing to be ascertained, clarified, and standardized.

With the support of Princeville Capital, CCSI offers insights into unresolved issues:

  1. Attribution and baselining
  2. Paris-aligned thresholds for prioritization
  3. Indirect impact and tailored KPIs …

Exploring Mean Reversion Dynamics In Financial Markets: Insights From Hurst Exponent Analysis, Shifa Hasan, Renu Ghosh

The Indonesian Capital Market Review

The current study investigates mean reversion and the speed of mean reversion within financial mar- kets at BSE 200 and NSE Nifty 200 for a data set of 20 years (2004–2024). It employs a variety of techniques, including traditional tests like the Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) and Philips-Perron (PP) tests, as well as long-term dependency analysis using the Hurst exponent. The Ornstein-Uhlen- beck process facilitated the speed of mean reversion. Empirical data demonstrates that mean rever- sion processes exhibit Hurst exponent values less than 0.5, suggesting mean reverting behaviour. This signifies the importance of adopting long-term perspectives in decision-making and trading …

Journal of Youth Development

Adolescence is a critical period for developing social and emotional habits important for mental well-being (Kessler et al., 2005). Half of all mental health conditions start by age 14, and the average delay between onset of symptoms and intervention is eight to ten years (Wang et al., 2007). Youth with mental health conditions are particularly vulnerable to social exclusion, discrimination, stigma, educational difficulties, risk-taking behaviors, and worsening physical health. Youth often do not get the help they need due to ongoing stigma and barriers in accessing mental health treatment. For example, in Wisconsin, 30% of the population live in a …

Epigenetic Developmental Mechanisms Underlying Sex Differences In Cancer, Joshua B. Rubin, Tamara Abou-Antoun, Joseph E. Ippolito, Lorida Llaci, Camryn T. Marquez, Jason P. Wong, Lihua Yang

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Cancer risk is modulated by hereditary and somatic mutations, exposures, age, sex, and gender. The mechanisms by which sex and gender work alone and in combination with other cancer risk factors remain underexplored. In general, cancers that occur in both the male and female sexes occur more commonly in XY compared with XX individuals, regardless of genetic ancestry, geographic location, and age. Moreover, XY individuals are less frequently cured of their cancers, highlighting the need for a greater understanding of sex and gender effects in oncology. This will be necessary for optimal laboratory and clinical cancer investigations. To that end, …

A Qualitative Study Exploring The Management & Implications Of Power Differentials Experienced By Pre-Licensed Supervisees In Clinical Supervision Settings, Joyti Jariwala

Dissertations

The focus in this qualitative study was to explore how power differentials in supervision create positive and negative experiences between licensed psychologists and pre-licensed doctoral students. The study results provide insight into how supervisees navigate these dynamics during supervision, which typically involves experiential learning environments in which trainees discuss progress, receive feedback, and enhance their skills. The theoretical framework grounding the study was social learning theory, which is based on the idea that individuals learn from modeling, observation, and imitation in a social context (Bandura, 1986). Reflexive thematic analysis was used to recognize similarities in findings gathered via two sets …

Impacts Of Professional Development On Researchers, Kayleigh M. Patterson

Theses

In this work, I study the effectiveness of Professional development for Emerging Education Researchers (PEER) using a framework adapted from one that evaluates professional development for teachers. Professional Development (PD) is the process of learning information after one’s main school for job settings. These cover job/career specific skills that are not taught during schooling, since they are normally more specific. While a Ph.D. does set up a lot of specific skills, due to a changing research climate based on discoveries and organizational standards, there are always more skills to learn for a researcher. Therefore, there are professional development for researchers …
