Factors Contributing To Executive Function In Young Adults, Lindy Janae Stevenson Oct 2026

Factors Contributing To Executive Function In Young Adults, Lindy Janae Stevenson

McNair Scholars Research

Executive functions (EF) are skills used to complete desired behaviors and inhibit undesired ones. These skills are necessary for everyday life, and even more so in higher education and the workplace. This study examined the combined impact of sleep and exercise on five facets of EF in young adults enrolled in undergraduate or graduate courses. It also examined how perceived effort and performance in college classes interact with EF. The first five hypotheses studying sleep and exercise were analyzed using a 2x2 between-groups ANOVA. The data divided participants into those averaging fewer than 7 hours of sleep a night and …

BACKGROUND: Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) enables broad, untargeted detection of pathogens and microbial signals across complex sample types. However, the diversity of operational contexts, from regulatory enforcement to exploratory discovery, challenges the defining of analytical or interpretive standards appropriate across all applications. Variability in laboratory practices, bioinformatic methods, and reporting conventions continues to limit consistency and decision-maker confidence in mNGS results. OBJECTIVES: We introduce STRATUM (Structured Framework for Reporting, Assessment, and Translational Utility of Metagenomics), a use-case-stratified framework that aligns quality assurance, metadata reporting, and interpretive standards with the consequence and intended use of metagenomic sequencing outputs. METHODS: STRATUM is …

Perception Is Reality: The Obvious Interest Of State And Local Governments In Fighting Corruption Through The Enactment Of Contribution Limits, Jordan Al-Rawi Oct 2026

Perception Is Reality: The Obvious Interest Of State And Local Governments In Fighting Corruption Through The Enactment Of Contribution Limits, Jordan Al-Rawi

San Diego Law Review

Individual campaign contribution limits are one of the few remaining constitutional tools in a state or local government’s toolkit for fighting corruption, or its appearance, in elections.  Because contribution limits marginally burden a contributor’s First Amendment freedoms, a challenged limit must survive an arduous tailoring analysis to ensure that the limit is closely drawn to the government’s purported interest in combatting actual or perceived quid pro quo corruption.  However, before a challenged limit is subjected to this tailoring analysis, the government must first demonstrate that it has an individualized interest in addressing the existence of actual or perceived quid pro …

Calling Balls And Three Strikes, Tobie J. Smith Oct 2026

Calling Balls And Three Strikes, Tobie J. Smith

San Diego Law Review

The Supreme Court has revitalized the jury’s role in criminal sentencing over the past quarter century, reaffirming that the Sixth Amendment right to trial by jury extends to factfinding that increases the punishment range for a conviction.  But one class of sentencing findings—those related to a defendant’s criminal history—has been excluded.  The Court has upheld an exception to the jury right where the fact to be found is whether a defendant has a prior conviction.  Relying on that prior-conviction exception, many jurisdictions have continued to allow judges to increase the possible sentence based on their own preponderance-of-the-evidence findings about disputed …

Penetrating The Veil: Why Congress Regulating The Sperm Donation Process Is Not Nuts!, Matthew Leung

San Diego Law Review

The Commerce Clause is one of the strongest and most expansive powers granted to Congress under the U.S. Constitution.  While its strength has fluctuated throughout history, its power will undoubtedly be important in tackling modern problems, including regulating the Wild West of sperm donation.  The rapid expansion of the commercial sperm banking industry and the rise in the need for sperm donors have exposed significant regulatory gaps in the United States.  Although these groups support family formation for individuals facing infertility, same-sex couples, and single parents, federal oversight is largely limited when screening donors.  As a result, critical issues, including …

Height From The Ground And Phytotelm Ph Affect Prokaryotic Diversity In Epiphytic Bromeliads, X O’Reilly-Berkeley, Thomas Hughes, H Mossman, Jennifer Rowntree, Richard Preziosi

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Tank bromeliads in the neotropics harbour complex communities of invertebrates and even provide food, water and shelter to various vertebrate species. However, few studies have sequenced the microbial communities within epiphytic bromeliad phytotelmata. We sequenced the 16S rRNA subunit extracted from swabs rubbed at the base within the central phytotelm of the epiphytic bromeliads Aechmea hoppii and A. nidularioides. We tested factors that we suspected could influence the alpha diversity and beta-diversity of prokaryotic communities in bromeliads. Height on the tree and size of the bromeliad influenced the alpha-diversity within plants. Height from the ground and pH of the phytotelm …

Mesopotamian Journal of Big Data

The increasing volume and complexity of environmental data have highlighted the need for advanced analytical and artificial intelligence methods to support water-resource monitoring and management. Although machine-learning (ML) models have achieved strong performance in water-quality prediction and classification, their black-box nature remains a major obstacle to their use in environmental decision-making and policymaking. This study presents an explainable artificial intelligence (XAI)-based framework for two complementary water-quality assessment tasks: three-class water quality index classification using Dataset A and binary water-potability classification using Dataset B. Eight machine-learning algorithms were evaluated: logistic regression, support vector machine, random forest, extremely randomized trees, bagging classifier, …

A Hybrid Telehealth Model Offers Access To Specialty Diabetes Care In Pregnancy, Katherine M. Davis, Wendy Craig, Kelley Conroy

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction: Diabetes in pregnancy is increasing in the United States and is associated with greater maternal and neonatal morbidity. Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) improve glycemic control, but data on outcomes with telehealth-based diabetes management in pregnancy remain limited. This study compared glycemic control and perinatal outcomes among pregnant people with diabetes managed using CGMs through in-person care versus a hybrid-option model.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients with singleton pregnancies and diabetes managed with CGMs from January 2018 to June 2022. Participants receiving third-trimester care before the COVID-19 pandemic comprised the traditional group, whereas those …

Associations Of Subclinical Hypothyroidism And Thyroid Autoimmunity With Insulin Resistance Independent Of Adiposity: An Analysis Of Nhanes, Iman Taher Hussein Oct 2026

Associations Of Subclinical Hypothyroidism And Thyroid Autoimmunity With Insulin Resistance Independent Of Adiposity: An Analysis Of Nhanes, Iman Taher Hussein

AUIQ Complementary Biological System

A thyroid–inflammation–insulin pathway has been proposed in which thyroid dysfunction promotes inflammation and thereby reduces insulin sensitivity, but adiposity-adjusted population evidence is limited. This cross-sectional analysis examined whether subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and thyroid autoimmunity are associated with insulin resistance independently of body mass index (BMI), and whether C-reactive protein (CRP), the only inflammatory biomarker available, is associated with either, using National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2012 data. Non-pregnant adults aged 18–60 years with fasting glucose < 126 mg/dL and normal free thyroxine were included; SCH was defined as thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) 4.5–10 mIU/L, and insulin resistance was quantified by the homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Linear regression of log HOMA-IR accounted for the complex survey design (strata, clusters, weights) and was adjusted for age, sex, BMI, and survey cycle, with sensitivity and interaction analyses. Among 2,434 adults (89 with SCH), no association with HOMA-IR was detected for TSH (β = 0.009 per mIU/L; 95% CI -0.014 to 0.032), SCH (β = -0.035; 95% CI -0.186 to 0.115), or thyroid peroxidase …

The Life Of A Showgirl As A Cultural Artifact: What's Hidden By The Lipstick And Lace?, Crystal F. Haryanto Oct 2026

The Life Of A Showgirl As A Cultural Artifact: What's Hidden By The Lipstick And Lace?, Crystal F. Haryanto

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This paper develops a collage-based framework to holistically assess Taylor Swift’s highly anticipated first release after the Eras Tour concluded. The Life of a Showgirl, with sparkling promotional materials leading up to its October 2025 drop and polarizing critical reception following it, represents an entertainer’s lifestyle while still concealing what was alluded to behind the Eras Tour curtain. Rather than engage in a direct response to Showgirl, I critically evaluate positive and negative commentary from listeners regarding the album, and I thematically analyze lyrical concepts throughout Swift’s discography to contextualize Showgirl within the arc of her work. I …

(Re)Membering As Resistance: Learning From My Grandma’S Story In A Time Of Historical Erasure, Akilah K. Lyons-Moore

Occasional Paper Series

In the current moment of historical erasure—marked by book bans, curricular restrictions, and political efforts to sanitize discussions of race—(re)membering becomes a pedagogical imperative. Drawing on Morrison’s (1987) articulation of (re)membering and Black feminist theories of memory (Collins, 2000; Hartman, 2008; hooks, 1994), this paper uses narrative inquiry to trace the intergenerational educational journeys of a Black rural Southern woman born in 1914 and her granddaughter, a contemporary teacher educator. Through autobiography and lived experience, this paper examines how personal and communal histories counter disremembering (Trouillot, 1995) and the politics of being forgotten. By weaving together these two lives—rooted in …

Beyond The Chalkboard: Black Oral Traditions And The Kitchen Table As Pedagogy, Gerald D. Smith Jr Oct 2026

Beyond The Chalkboard: Black Oral Traditions And The Kitchen Table As Pedagogy, Gerald D. Smith Jr

Occasional Paper Series

This article positions the kitchen table as a vital pedagogical archive within Black educational history. Drawing on the work of various Black scholars, it argues that domestic spaces—kitchen tables, living rooms, basements, and barbershops have long functioned as fugitive classrooms where Black communities cultivated knowledge, identity, and political consciousness beyond the constraints of formal schooling. Using Carrie Mae Weems’ Kitchen Table Series as a central metaphor, the article traces how oral traditions, storytelling, and community dialogue preserved Black intellectual traditions during eras of segregation, educator displacement, and systemic erasure throughout history. Highlighting Black feminist educators such as Anna Julia Cooper, …

Voices From The Atrato: Reclaiming Afrocolombian Education From The Riverbank, Siris Sulay Mena-Rivera, Karen Chaverra-Mosquera, Maure Aguirre Ortega

Occasional Paper Series

This article reconceptualizes the Atrato River as a living pedagogical archive that participates in the formation of Black education in Chocó, Colombia. Drawing on Black feminist oral methods, it centers a dialogue among Black educators to examine how educational knowledge emerges through relationships with the river, territory, memory, and community life. The analysis argues that river-based pedagogies distinct Afro-Colombian epistemologies that challenge White/Mestizo-centered and standardized models of schooling. Storytelling, river travel, intergenerational memory, and everyday territorial practices are examined as pedagogical processes through which Black communities sustain identity, historical consciousness, and collective sovereignty. The article further contends that the Atrato's …

Freedom Is Taught Here: Freedom Schools And The Radical Tradition Of Intergenerational Community Learning In Black Education, Trayc D. Freeman, Wintre F. Johnson, Tiffany D. Meadows, Christine Onyinyechi-Uju Emuka, Naila A. Smith

Occasional Paper Series

The Black American community has always understood the power of literacy and education, and the importance of Black self-sufficiency to attain these. The establishment of Freedom Schools during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi is an actualization of that understanding. Since 1995, the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) has carried on the work and legacy, with Freedom Schools still taking place all over the United States. For two summers, we, researchers from the University of Virginia, have had the opportunity to partner with a CDF Freedom School as part of a mixed-method research study. This essay serves as a reflection and …

An Eco-Corpus Stylistic Analysis Of The Underland: A Deep Time Journey By Robert Macfarlane, Eman Adil Jaafar, Haida Kareem Ali

AUIQ Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper examines patterns of linguistic foregrounding in the nature writing book Underland: A Deep Time Journey by Robert Macfarlane (2019) through a corpus stylistic approach. It aims to identify and interpret distinctive language features that stand out within the text and shape its expressive qualities. Such foregrounded elements are shown to intensify both the aesthetic and persuasive dimensions of climate fiction, functioning as a narrative mechanism that draws readers into deeper engagement with environmental issues. By integrating insights from stylistics and climate discourse, the study highlights the role of this text as an effective medium for environmental communication and …

Withdrawing A Link Aggregation Group Member Link From Frame Distribution Upon Loss Of Macsec Protection, Anonymous

Defensive Publications Series

A link aggregation group (LAG) whose member links are individually protected by MACsec withdraws a member link from frame distribution when MACsec protection on that link is lost while the link remains physically up. The MACsec entity on the link reports the fault to the LAG function, which clears the Synchronization, Collecting, and Distributing state for the port and transmits a Link Aggregation Control Protocol data unit at once, so that both ends stop hashing traffic onto the link within one exchange. A reserved bit or a new element of the data unit advertises whether MACsec is operational on each …

Serverless Health Questionnaire Records Carried In Optical Codes And Encrypted To An Ad Hoc Roster Of Examiners, Paul Andrew Galjan, Patrick Duggan Oct 2026

Serverless Health Questionnaire Records Carried In Optical Codes And Encrypted To An Ad Hoc Roster Of Examiners, Paul Andrew Galjan, Patrick Duggan

Defensive Publications Series

A method and system for moving a completed health questionnaire from a respondent's device to one of several examiners at a temporary clinic, without any server, account, or database holding the questionnaire. The respondent's device serializes and compresses the answers, encrypts them once under a fresh random content key, and wraps that content key separately to the public key of every examiner on the clinic's roster. The result is displayed as an optical code (for example a QR code) that is itself the record. Each examiner's device generates its own key pair locally, shares only the public key, and never …
