Digital Information Technologies And International Humanitarian Law: New Opportunities And Challenges, Jonathan Hafetz Jan 2025

Digital Information Technologies And International Humanitarian Law: New Opportunities And Challenges, Jonathan Hafetz

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

Digital technologies are transforming the nature and role of information during armed conflict. They have exponentially increased the amount of information about armed conflict and the speed with which it can be disseminated. Digital information technologies present both opportunities and challenges for International Humanitarian Law (IHL). They can help minimize harm to civilians, document IHL violations, and provide evidence for investigating and prosecuting atrocity crimes. Digital technologies, however, bring risks as well. They make it easier to misuse and manipulate information, which can increase risks to civilians, conceal IHL violations, and spread disinformation about the causes and conduct of war. …

Think Globally And Act Locally: Collaboration Across Borders To Address Climate Change, Allan T. Marks Jan 2025

Think Globally And Act Locally: Collaboration Across Borders To Address Climate Change, Allan T. Marks

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

Climate change is a global challenge. International cooperation is essential yet insufficient. This tension is evident in negotiations of international climate agreements and at global climate conferences. In this context, it is worth asking why international law has so far failed sufficiently to address the global challenge of climate change and whether other types of cross-border collaboration can fill the void. Economic, political, and social factors inhibit accelerated and coordinated responses to climate challenges. The scope and direction of climate mitigation and adaptation are uneven, especially in the energy transition. The failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions fast or far …

Education Is Not A Commodity – It Is A Human Right, Barbara Stark Jan 2025

Education Is Not A Commodity – It Is A Human Right, Barbara Stark

Denver Journal of International Law & Policy

America has embraced neoliberalism, and virtually everything that is tangible—and much that is not—has been commodified. Natural resources once thought of as ‘free,’ such as water, have been packaged and branded. ‘Value’ is routinely conflated with ‘cost.’ This article explains why education should not be regarded as a commodity, but as an internationally recognized human right. Like the right to free speech, it should be free and meaningful. It should be a national priority. The United States does not recognize education as a human right. If it did, public education in this country would probably be in better shape. Equally …

Conceptualising Coercion In Child/Forced Marriage Through An Intersectional Lens: Narratives Of Survivors And Practitioners In The Us, Sundari Anitha, Manjusha Gupte

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

This article examines the nature and forms of coercion in the forced marriage of minors in the US. We explore: (i) direct emotional or physical force exercised by parents which is commonly underpinned by dominant constructions of gender and sexuality, a well-rehearsed theme in existing scholarship; (ii) the hitherto unexamined role of intersecting socio-economic disadvantages in vitiating consent; and (iii) how state policies/practices create conducive contexts for child/forced marriage, which is elided in existing scholarship. In extending existing conceptualisations of coercion in child/forced marriage, we explicate the ‘total burden of coercion’ through a focus on the contexts within which consent …

Identifying The Constituents Of Pyrolysis Oil Using Supercritical Fluid Chromatography- Fraction Collection (Sfc-Fc) And Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry/Vacuum Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (Gc-Ms/Vuv), Sadid Morshed

2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive

Plastic waste continues to accumulate as production increases and disposal methods remain insufficient. Even with recycling programs in place, much of the discarded plastic still ends up in landfills or waterways, eventually breaking down into harmful microplastics. One promising solution is the conversion of plastic waste into pyrolysis oil, which can also serve as an alternative feedstock for chemicals. Pyrolysis oil is produced by heating plastics to approximately 800 °C in the absence of oxygen, resulting in a complex mixture of hydrocarbons that includes paraffins, isoparaffins, olefins, naphthenes, and aromatics. Analyzing the amount of oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur in these …

Crippled By War: Arguing Russia’S Actions In Ukraine Constitute Disability Persecution Under Article 7(1)(H) Of The Rome Statute, Davis Hayman

American University International Law Review

During the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Russia implemented a “humanitarian aid” program which moved Ukrainian people with disabilities to Russia or Russian-controlled areas. The Prosecutor for the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants under the theory that this program constitutes war crimes.

This Comment argues this program further qualifies as the crime of persecution against Ukrainians with disabilities. This piece first analyzes the crime of persecution, its relationship with other crimes and how non-enumerated groups can receive its protection. Next, this piece analyzes international human rights developments related to people with disabilities to show they qualify for such …
