Genre Audiences, Lcgft And User Warrant: An Exploratory Study, Deborah Tomaras, Allison Bailund, Joshua Bergmann, Abby Dover, Steven W. Holloway, C. Rockwell Strader

Law Librarian Scholarship

The Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms (LCGFT) vocabulary is among the most prominent genre vocabularies used in library cataloging. To investigate how the current application of LCGFT affects users’ genre access, we gathered data from library patrons, library staff, and parties involved in genre creation and use. The results demonstrate that patrons actively seek out genre materials in libraries, often via library catalogs, and that LCGFT has room for growth and expansion that might enhance patrons’ search experience.

Antitrust In The Health Care Sector, Doug Ross Jan 2025

Antitrust In The Health Care Sector, Doug Ross

Chapters in Books

This chapter is an opportunity for students to apply the concepts addressed elsewhere in the book, but at a deeper level and in the context of a sector that accounts for a very large share of antitrust activity on the part of government enforcers and private plaintiffs. The topics chosen illustrate some of the nuances in applying antitrust law in the real world and show how the application of antitrust principles has evolved over time. The chapter also raises important policy questions regarding how to apply antitrust to a sector that is rife with market failures, including what tools and …

Representation Theory, Geometry And Combinatorics Associated To Springer Fibers, Do Kien Hoang Jan 2025

Representation Theory, Geometry And Combinatorics Associated To Springer Fibers, Do Kien Hoang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation explores various aspects of Springer fibers and their deep connections to geometric and combinatorial representation theory. It combines the works of [H24a], [H24b], and [H24c] by the author during his PhD. Throughout these works, we explain sophisticated roles of Springer fibers in modern topics like modular representation theory and symplectic duality. Additionally, we resolve several classical questions concerning the Springer correspondence and the cohomology of Springer fibers.

The first project centers around a discretization of a Springer fiber Be. This discretization is a finite set Ye that has appeared in various contexts in representation theory. …

Partners In Death: Introducing An Ethic Of Care To Online Funeral Home Rhetoric, Lindsay Catherine Gagnon Jan 2025

Partners In Death: Introducing An Ethic Of Care To Online Funeral Home Rhetoric, Lindsay Catherine Gagnon

Dissertations and Theses

The funeral industry has become a staple in American death culture over the last century and a half. The professionalization of end-of-life and funeral practices has distanced the average American further from the realities of death, creating a dependent relationship on the funeral home to navigate the complexities of the death process. The experience of grief creates a need for a care that prioritizes the dead and their loved ones. This study calls for an application of care ethics to the rhetoric being promoted by funeral home websites. I first conduct an ideograph analysis of the ideographs and to assess …

Ergodic Switching Control For Markov-Feller Processes Ii, Jose L. Menaldi, Maurice Robin Jan 2025

Ergodic Switching Control For Markov-Feller Processes Ii, Jose L. Menaldi, Maurice Robin

Mathematics Faculty Research Publications

This is the continuation of Part I [14], where we considered control problems with long term average (or ergodic) cost for Markov switching processes (zt , nt ), nt being a discrete component with values in a finite set N . The control acts only on this discrete component and consists of immediate switching actions. We solve the ergodic problem in several situations extending previous works, mainly when zt is a reflected diffusion with or without jumps and when the set of control values is strictly smaller than N . In this Part II, we conclude our theoretical analysis with …

Quantifying Modifiable Lifestyle Behaviors And Influences Associated With Preventable Cancers In Selected Rural Counties: A Mixed Method Study, Jecinta Scott

Dissertations and Theses

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States disproportionately affecting rural communities. This dissertation study investigates the involvement of rural communities in lifestyle behaviors associated with increased risk of cancers, the impact of socioeconomic factors, and what influences their behavior and the impact of political party affiliation. The study was conducted using a mixed-method quantitative data analysis enhanced by qualitative interviews. It began with an extensive literature review to identify existing research, and evidence gaps on the topic. Data collection involved retrospective quantitative extraction from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance …

Survival Of The Fittest? Ai And Its Different Regulatory Models, Miklós Király

Emory International Law Review

Prof. Peter Hay is a regular visitor to Budapest, Hungary. He gives excellent lectures on conflict of laws, with a particular focus on the nuances of jurisdiction. At the same time, many of us are avid readers of his German textbook US-Amerikanisches Recht. This textbook provides an overview of US law, from legal history to constitutional law and administrative law or criminal law. His interest and work which spans legal disciplines and legal systems, encourages me to welcome him with a paper on comparative law than a study of private international law.

This paper provides an overview of the broad …

Precautionary Measures And The Risk Of Escalation In The Use Of Nuclear Weapons, Jeffrey Biller Jan 2025

Precautionary Measures And The Risk Of Escalation In The Use Of Nuclear Weapons, Jeffrey Biller

Emory International Law Review

The use of nuclear weapons presents an unparalleled risk of escalation, a reality that has become increasingly pressing due to recent geopolitical developments, particularly Russia’s revised nuclear doctrine and its ongoing conflict with Ukraine. While the legal frameworks governing armed conflict, particularly International Humanitarian Law (IHL), do not traditionally require an analysis of escalation risk before an attack, this article argues that the extreme and immediate consequences of nuclear escalation necessitate its inclusion within the precautionary measures framework.

This article first examines the concept of nuclear escalation, identifying both intended and unintended risks associated with nuclear strikes. While nuclear deterrence …

Due Diligence Obligations Over State Economic Entities In International Investment Law, Kevin Clement Jan 2025

Due Diligence Obligations Over State Economic Entities In International Investment Law, Kevin Clement

Northwestern Journal of International Law & Business

The growing importance and sophistication of State capitalism and associated implementation of governmental policies through State economic entities, such as State-owned banks, State-owned enterprises, monopolies, and other entities close to the government, has given rise to a perception that existing international law rules are inadequate to effectively accommodate the activities of such entities. Sole reliance on customary international law principles of attribution has proven particularly problematic where governments maintain links with their economic entities that create a risk of the latter being used as conduits for governmental action. Such links may exist in a variety of forms beyond mere ownership, …

Is It Possible To Draft A Universal Criminal Code?, Paul H. Robinson Jan 2025

Is It Possible To Draft A Universal Criminal Code?, Paul H. Robinson

American University International Law Review

The world contains hundreds of distinct communities with their own traditions and values. One might assume that, despite the best efforts of international organizations, it would be impossible to draft a criminal code that could operate effectively for all countries. Is that the case? If one tried to construct a universal criminal code, what sorts of challenges and limitations with the effort face?
