Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman Jan 2025

Breath, Body, And The Blank Page: An Autoethnographic Approach To Embodied Writing Practices In First-Year Writing, Kristen Garramone Hoffman

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores how somatic awareness and trauma-informed pedagogies can be integrated into the teaching of writing. Drawing from autoethnography and pedagogical theory, it proposes that writing is not a purely cognitive act but a deeply embodied process, one shaped by the physiological and psychological dimensions of lived experience. Using autoethnography as both method and praxis, the study centers the author’s experiences of trauma, grief, and healing to investigate how body-based practices such as breathwork, visualization, and mindfulness can support writing, particularly for students navigating stress, anxiety, or disconnection from their academic identities. Chapter One situates the research within literature …

The Long Shadow Of Pride And Prejudice On Contemporary Fictions Of Arranged Marriage And Marriages Of Alliance, Candice Belluscio Jan 2025

The Long Shadow Of Pride And Prejudice On Contemporary Fictions Of Arranged Marriage And Marriages Of Alliance, Candice Belluscio

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an examination of the conflicts between arranged marriage and companionate marriage in selected contemporary Anglo-Indian novels and novels about Orthodox Judaism. The project’s guiding focus is how modern ideals of independence and choice in marriage coexist simultaneously with older ideals of marriage as family or personal “alliance.” The dissertation has a historical chapter that shows that although ideals of companionate marriage have become norms of 20th century western society and literature, the term “companionate marriage” is a recent invention and convention, and that various degrees and forms of arranged marriage, or marriages of alliance, continue despite their …

Ripples Of Support: A Mixed Methods Study Of Bystander Behavior In The Context Of Sexual Assault Among College Students, Miranda Levy Jan 2025

Ripples Of Support: A Mixed Methods Study Of Bystander Behavior In The Context Of Sexual Assault Among College Students, Miranda Levy

Theses and Dissertations

Emerging adulthood represents a period of elevated risk for sexual assault (SA), particularly among college students. Students are not only potential victims or perpetrators but also bystanders—individuals who may witness or become aware of risky or harmful situations and must decide whether and how to respond. Understanding what influences students’ decisions to intervene as bystanders in SA contexts is critical to improving peer responses and fostering safer campus environments. This study used a concurrent mixed methods design to examine how college students’ knowledge of campus SA policies, personal history of victimization, prior experiences receiving help, and SA disclosure reactions relate …

Investigation Of The Binding Mechanisms Between Naphthenic Acids And Humic Acid Using Raman Spectroscopy And Computational Modeling, Jaelyn N. Palmer Jan 2025

Investigation Of The Binding Mechanisms Between Naphthenic Acids And Humic Acid Using Raman Spectroscopy And Computational Modeling, Jaelyn N. Palmer

Theses and Dissertations

The oil sand regions in Alberta, Canada have proven to be costly to the environment despite its economic benefits. The toxins produced during oil processing are sent to tailing ponds to be recycled, though often leaking into nearby waterways and soil. Naphthenic acids, NAs, are one of the most common toxins produced and have shown to be toxic to aquatic life, animals, and humans. As there is dissolved organic matter in tailing ponds and surrounding environments, tailing ponds often lead to NAs coming in contact with organic material. Humic acid, HA, is a major soil component that has been suspected …

Qualitative Analysis Via Network Models Of Human Dynamin-1 Throughout Gtp Hydrolysis, Kevin Brian Schulman Jan 2025

Qualitative Analysis Via Network Models Of Human Dynamin-1 Throughout Gtp Hydrolysis, Kevin Brian Schulman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which nucleotide binding dictates the intrinsic dynamics and to understand the functional conformational changes of Human Dynamin-1 during the GTP hydrolysis cycle through the use of Elastic Network Models (ENM). A comprehensive understanding of this process is crucial given dynamin's role in clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME). The research utilized both experimentally derived crystal structures and AlphaFold-predicted structures of dynamin, specifically examining the GTPase and Bundle Signaling Element (BSE) domains across nucleotide-free, GTP-bound, GDP-bound, and transition states. The essential features of the research methodology involved a multi-scale computational approach. Qualitative analyses were performed …

Embracing An Online Literary Identity: How Booktok Makes Literature More Accessible, Elizabeth Kaufmann

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I examine conversations that occur on TikTok’s literary corner, “BookTok.” My research involves focusing on the multimodality of BookTok, following comment sections and search options, as well as analyzing the components of the videos themselves. BookTok content creators focus on these features in order to spark literary conversation in an approachable way. These influencers heavily sway the app itself and the books being recommended. Extending my research beyond BookTok influencers, this essay seeks to understand the value of influencer backing on products towards their social legitimacy. Some users on TikTok are not fans of how the algorithm …

Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco Jan 2025

Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco

Theses and Dissertations

One of the key problems of the archive of enslavement, borne out of the violent erasure of enslaved identities, is the struggle to reconstruct and honor those lost identities. Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity in the Archives of Enslavement investigates postcolonial archival processes and the resulting documents to identify a spectrum of speculative literary genres that can be used to supplement traumatic archival erasures, often of female voices and identities, to further understand the power dynamics. To clarify, I use the term ‘speculative literature’ here to refer to a mode of literature that relies on the few fragments that may …

How Therapists’ Perceptions Impact Disseminating And Implementing Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Maddi R. Gervasio Jan 2025

How Therapists’ Perceptions Impact Disseminating And Implementing Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Maddi R. Gervasio

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, 60% of youth experience a traumatic event before the age of 18 (Lawrence-Sidebottom et al., 2024) and childhood trauma is associated with a range of psychopathology. Although evidence-based therapies like Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT; Cohen et al., 2017) are available, only 14-22% of traumatized youth receive trauma-specific practices during treatment (Borntrager et al., 2013). Barriers to disseminating and implementing TF-CBT and similar interventions exist at the micro (e.g., therapist and client) and macro (e.g., systemic) levels (e.g., Gervasio & Herren, 2020). Emerging research focused on training in trauma therapists found that therapists’ negative perceptions about the …

Evaluating Task Demands And Task Characteristics Analysis Among School Psychologists, Alessandra Miceli Jan 2025

Evaluating Task Demands And Task Characteristics Analysis Among School Psychologists, Alessandra Miceli

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive ability assessments are central to psychoeducational evaluations, informing decisions regarding interventions and supports for students. While cognitive assessment theories have historically emphasized quantitative data in score interpretation, they have increasingly reflected the need to consider qualitative information, a longstanding tenet of neuropsychological assessment. Frameworks such as the Integrated School Neuropsychology/Cattell-Horn-Carroll (SNP/CHC) Model and the Cognitive Hypothesis Testing (CHT) Model emphasize the importance of analyzing subtest task demands and task characteristics to explain unexpected score discrepancies. Despite these recommendations, little is known about school psychologists’ familiarity with these analyses and their use in the interpretation of test performance. This study …

Theses and Dissertations

It is my objective within this paper to lead us through an in depth analysis of both Katniss Everdeen and Paul Atriedes, investigating every feature of their lives especially in the ways that they compare and differ to one another, after all, it is their written depth and complexity that makes them and their novels so fascinating to the public and earning them fame. Through my exploration, I hope to shed some light on the ways these three elements work and coincide with one another within both narratives. To separate them from one another and simply examine them as independent …

Associations Between Psychoeducation And Measures Of Treatment Engagement In Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Shari Lieblich Jan 2025

Associations Between Psychoeducation And Measures Of Treatment Engagement In Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Shari Lieblich

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the efficacy of TF-CBT, its effectiveness is compromised by high premature dropout or attrition rates. Psychoeducation, the first component of TF-CBT, provides both a rationale for engagement in treatment and normalizes symptoms to instill hope in youth and their caregivers. This component has been minimally examined as a predictor of later-phase symptom outcomes, mostly in adult trauma treatments, with mixed results. The goal of the current study is examine the influence of psychoeducation on participation-related variables in TF-CBT. Results indicate a positive association between the percentage of sessions of with psychoeducation and attrition and negative association with percentage session …

The Relationship Between Psychotherapist Self-Disclosure And Occupational And Emotional Variables, Kay Nikiforova Jan 2025

The Relationship Between Psychotherapist Self-Disclosure And Occupational And Emotional Variables, Kay Nikiforova

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of therapist self-disclosure practices on patients and the therapeutic relationship has long been debated. The historical trend of viewpoint toward self-disclosure began from predicting a negative, therapy-interfering stance to a growing openness towards the consideration that therapists sharing about themselves in session can have a positive effect on the patient. Evidence exists for both potential patient benefit and harm from therapists engaging in self-disclosure. Still, there is an increasing body of evidence that demonstrates that therapist self-disclosure benefits the therapeutic process, increases patient disclosure, and provides a more positive view of the therapeutic relationship. However, at present, there …

A High-Order Eulerian–Lagrangian Runge–Kutta Finite Volume (El–Rk–Fv) Method For Scalar Nonlinear Conservation Laws, J. Chen, Joseph Nakao, J.-M. Qiu, Y. Yang Jan 2025

A High-Order Eulerian–Lagrangian Runge–Kutta Finite Volume (El–Rk–Fv) Method For Scalar Nonlinear Conservation Laws, J. Chen, Joseph Nakao, J.-M. Qiu, Y. Yang

Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works

We present a class of high-order Eulerian–Lagrangian Runge–Kutta finite volume methods that can numerically solve Burgers’ equation with shock formations, which could be extended to general scalar conservation laws. Eulerian–Lagrangian (EL) and semi-Lagrangian (SL) methods have recently seen increased development and have become a staple for allowing large time-stepping sizes. Yet, maintaining relatively large time-stepping sizes post shock formation remains quite challenging. Our proposed scheme integrates the partial differential equation on a space-time region partitioned by linear approximations to the characteristics determined by the Rankine–Hugoniot jump condition. We trace the characteristics forward in time and present a merging procedure for …

Assessing The Impact Of Key Environmental Factors On Caretta Caretta Nesting Patterns In Sarasota County, Matthew Senecal

Theses & ETDs

Environmental factors can impact development for oviparous species during incubation. For sea turtles temperature can influence the sex ratio of the hatchlings and can decrease survival. The substrate the eggs are incubated in can differ between nests thus, impacting nests differently. This study examines the impact of sand characteristics, specifically grain size, color, calcium carbonate, change in sand surface temperature, and hydraulic conductivity, on overall nest viability in Sarasota County, Florida. Darker sands, such as those found further to the south, may lead to higher incubation temperatures and faster hatching rates, potentially increasing the proportion of female hatchlings. Laboratory analysis …

Patient Autonomy, Public Safety, And Drivers With Cognitive Decline, Sharona Hoffman, Cassandra Burke Robertson Jan 2025

Patient Autonomy, Public Safety, And Drivers With Cognitive Decline, Sharona Hoffman, Cassandra Burke Robertson

Faculty Publications

With a growing elderly population, cognitive decline in drivers has become a significant public safety concern. Currently, over thirty-two million individuals who are seventy or older have driver’s licenses, and that number is growing quickly. In addition, almost ten percent of U.S. seniors (those sixty-five and older) have dementia, and an additional twenty-two percent have mild cognitive impairment. Between a quarter and a half of individuals with mild to moderate dementia still drive. As cognitive abilities such as memory, attention, and decision-making skills deteriorate, a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely can be compromised. This not only puts the …

For Official Violence, The Devil's In The Dehumanizing Details, Rachel Kincaid Jan 2025

For Official Violence, The Devil's In The Dehumanizing Details, Rachel Kincaid

JCLC Online

In Excessive Force in Prison, Professor Sharon Dolovich tackles the shortcomings of the Eighth Amendment’s cruel and unusual punishment doctrine to govern uses of official violence against prisoners. She argues that law enforcement officers owe a duty of care and protection to incarcerated people, but that duty of care and protection is undermined by the dehumanization and demonization of prisoners. Professor Dolovich thus advocates for shifting the doctrinal standard for excessive force under the Eighth Amendment to one based on objective reasonableness, paired with jury instructions explicitly reminding jurors of incarcerated victims’ humanity. To counteract the vagaries of such an …

From Oppenheimer To Trump: An Exploration Of The American History Of Prosecution And Persecution In Classified Information Dissemination, Samuel Bevenour Jan 2025

From Oppenheimer To Trump: An Exploration Of The American History Of Prosecution And Persecution In Classified Information Dissemination, Samuel Bevenour

JCLC Online

Robert Oppenheimer, the father of the atomic bomb, was stripped of his security clearance before documents were properly classified and without access to exculpatory evidence in what amounted to a show trial. The modern, peace-time classification system has expanded into an arguably uncontrollable leviathan that has proven unable to be curtailed by either political party despite bipartisan support. The usage of the related Espionage Act to enforce the ever-growing secrecy state has a problematic history of being utilized in politically motivated prosecutions in which defendants still face an uphill battle to gain access to exculpatory information. These prosecutions, under the …

Juvenile Drug Offenses: Rethinking Criminal Justice Approaches And Intervention Strategies, Lucas Kelly Jan 2025

Juvenile Drug Offenses: Rethinking Criminal Justice Approaches And Intervention Strategies, Lucas Kelly

JCLC Online

Juveniles, whose offending nature fundamentally differs from that of adults, should not be subjected to the traditional criminal justice system for drug offenses. Juvenile drug offenders warrant heightened attention due to their diminished capacity for reasoned judgment, increased susceptibility to the effects of drugs, the profound impact that criminal drug charges have on their future, and the possible presence of Substance Use Disorder. This Comment breaks down ways in which the U.S. has handled, and currently handles, juvenile drug offenders. I will also explore the long-term and short-term effects of drug convictions for juveniles, the issue of culpability and susceptibility …
