Safe Haven: Preventing Housing Instability For Queer Youth In Minneapolis, Tessa Loeffler Jan 2025

Safe Haven: Preventing Housing Instability For Queer Youth In Minneapolis, Tessa Loeffler

Selected Social Change Portfolios in Prevention, Intervention, and Consultation

Goal Statement: The goal of this Social Change Portfolio is to prevent unaccompanied housing instability among LGBTQ+ youth in Minneapolis through trauma-informed, culturally responsive strategies that strengthen family and community supports, improve mental health outcomes, enhance educational engagement, and promote long-term stability.

Significant Findings: Nationally, LGBTQ+ youth represent 40% of the homeless youth population, despite comprising less than 10% of the general youth demographic (Morton et al., 2018). In Minneapolis, TGNC youth of color face especially high risks due to intersecting barriers like racial discrimination, family rejection, and lack of affirming services (Houghtaling et al., 2024). Housing instability leads to …

Localized Kernel Methods For Signal Processing, Sippanon Kitimoon Jan 2025

Localized Kernel Methods For Signal Processing, Sippanon Kitimoon

CGU Theses & Dissertations

This dissertation presents two signal processing methods using specially designed localized kernels for parameter recovery under noisy condition. The first method addresses the estimation of frequencies and amplitudes in multidimensional exponential models. It utilizes localized trigonometric polynomial kernels to detect the multivariate frequencies, followed by a more detailed parameter estimation. We compare our method with MUSIC and ESPRIT, which are classical subspace-based algorithms widely used for estimating the parameters of exponential signals. In the univariate case, the method outperforms MUSIC and ESPRIT under low signal-to-noise ratios. For the multivariate case, we develop a coordinate-wise projection and registration approach that achieves …

Constructing Connections: A Phenomenological Explanation Of Loneliness In First-Year Undergraduates, Natalie S. Byrd, Sophia C. Mccabe, Jessica R. Robinson

Soaring: A Journal of Undergraduate Research

Loneliness is a pervasive phenomenon among college students globally, which has been previously explored in qualitative research. "Friendsickness,” focused on the preoccupation with lost or changed pre-college friendships, is linked to heightened social concerns, discrepancies between expectations and experiences, and loneliness in college (Paul & Brier, 2001). Additionally, pre-college romantic and familial relationships can impact first-year college students' social adjustment and loneliness levels (Calderon Leon et al., 2022; Paul et al., 1998). Guided by social constructivist theory, this phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of eight undergraduate students at a small liberal arts college in the Northeast United States. This …

Amy Zeh High-Impact: Hope Helps, Yvon Mbenza, Anant Ajvalia, Armando Ramirez, Alan Claiman

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

The purpose of our project was to volunteer with HOPE Helps, a nonprofit organization that provides community support through its thrift store, food pantry, and outreach events. Our group, Project Pegasus, worked onsite to help sort donations, organize items, and assist in the operation of the thrift store. We coordinated efforts with the volunteer manager and staff, who guided us and made sure we understood expectations and procedures. One of the most meaningful activities involved working alongside staff and other volunteers as coworkers to see how teamwork and common purpose create effective service. A key thing we learned was about …

Improving Pcos Through Movement: A Study On Hiit, Strength Training And Women’S Health, Angela Avdella, Eryka Salta Jan 2025

Improving Pcos Through Movement: A Study On Hiit, Strength Training And Women’S Health, Angela Avdella, Eryka Salta

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

This integrative learning project examined how different forms of physical activity—specifically High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Strength Training (ST)—impact hormonal and physical health in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS is a common hormonal disorder affecting 6–15% of women and is associated with insulin resistance, elevated testosterone levels, increased body fat, and long-term risks such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Because lifestyle interventions are key to PCOS management, this interventional study enumerated exercise as a strategy to improve health outcomes.

The study used was a 12-week intervention design in which participants completed either HIIT or strength training …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2025

The project titled “Home-Based Exercise Program for Recovery After TAVR” focuses on improving recovery outcomes in patients with heart valve disease, specifically those who have undergone Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR). The purpose of the project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a home-based exercise program, with and without Cognitive Behavioral Intervention (CBI), compared to an educational control program. The study aimed to enhance patients’ physical functionality, quality of life, and recovery time after TAVR—an important consideration for older adults who may not be eligible for open-heart surgery.

Key activities included interpreting a clinical trial. To be able to look …

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

This work presents new Kneser-type oscillation criteria for second-order quasilinear functional dynamic equations defined on arbitrary unbounded above time scales. Our approach employs the Riccati transformation technique in conjunction with the integral averaging method. The results show a significant improvement over recent Kneser-type oscillation criteria. We provided several illustrative examples to highlight the importance of our findings.

Unlocking Organizational Potential For Gis Collaboration In Higher Education, Charidy Paige

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Hardware, performance, and complex interface issues are just a few barriers that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) instructors must overcome when collaborative efforts extend beyond their classrooms. As GIS technologies evolve, instructors must adapt quickly to new tools and methods to maintain effective collaboration and ensure students achieve positive learning outcomes. Successful cooperation between departments, institutions, and other organizations requires preparation and sustainability throughout the semester to foster meaningful partnerships and support institutional goals. This dissertation applies the Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) to identify and define the challenges faced by GIS instructors, examining how they navigate these barriers by leveraging internal …

Modeling The Extracellular Matrix-Like Retinal Protein Pikachurin And Its Binding To Α-Dystroglycan And Gpcr (Gpr179), Mohit Belur, Khushi Raval, Riya Chelagiri, Rani Mehta, Emily Schmitt Lavin, Arthur Sikora

Protein Modeling Reports

We developed a 3D printed model to better understand the structure and function of the molecule, Pikachurin. Pikachurin is an extracellular matrix scaffold protein that bridges photoreceptor and ON-bipolar cell synapses by linking the presynaptic dystroglycan complex to the postsynaptic receptor GPR179, ensuring precise synaptic alignment essential for normal vision. Pikachurin was discovered in 2008 by a Japanese team at the Osaka Bioscience Institute through a microarray analysis of mouse retinas and was named after the Pokémon, Pikachu, because of its “lightning-fast” function in vision transmission. Although its role in dystroglycanopathy associated visual phenotypes is well recognized, there is no …

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier Jan 2025

Theorizing Gender And Social Movements Beyond The Binary, Nancy Whittier

Sociology: Faculty Books

This innovative Handbook examines how gender shapes social activism and is shaped by activism. With a unique interdisciplinary focus, it explores the effects of the gender binary on experiences of activism, considering how different movements negotiate and, at times, challenge these traditional conceptions. It then moves beyond the binary to explore how gender is challenged by contemporary movements.

Expert authors discuss the impact and limitations of the gender binary, using examples such as the MeToo movement to demonstrate how viewing men and women as separate, monolithic categories results in countless differences being overlooked. Chapters present a range of global and …
