Special Education Student Success Factors For The Online K-12 Learning Setting, Cassie Castro Jan 2025

Special Education Student Success Factors For The Online K-12 Learning Setting, Cassie Castro

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the dynamics of teacher-student communication and its impact on the academic success of students receiving special education services in grades 6–12 within an online school setting. With the growing adoption of online education, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, understanding how communication frequency, types of communication, and the mode of interaction (e.g. synchronous versus asynchronous) affect student outcomes is important. Grounded in the CoI Framework, this quantitative analysis examines the relationship between teacher-student communication and course passing rates for students receiving special education services. The analysis addresses three key questions: how the frequency, type, and mode of communication …

Tradition V. Radicalism - How The Myth Of Medusa Is Represented By Antonio Canova And Luciano Garbati, Aidai Sevigny

Hare & Bell Writing Contest

The fate of Medusa has resonated with a variety of audiences. Artists like Antonio Canova and Luciano Garbati have attempted to reinvent Medusa’s finale through the medium of sculpture. Both pieces display a grandiose demise; however, Canova’s work keeps with tradition, while Garbati’s sculpture concludes with a unique twist.

Understanding The Perplexing Nature Of Focus, Alessandra Martire Jan 2025

Understanding The Perplexing Nature Of Focus, Alessandra Martire

Hare & Bell Writing Contest

Focus does not seem to be that complex—that is, the comprehension of focus does not seem to be that complex. Anybody knows that focus itself determines the outcomes of many experiences, but what does deeply understanding focus have to do with using it? A certain individual thought the same thing prior to obtaining this understanding. She read the books, watched the TED Talks, and for the most part took the advice that was given to her—advice that promised improved focus and attention. Yet it seemed that nothing was happening. She still veered away from the task at hand each time …

Computing In The Commonwealth: Specialized Education In Computer Science And Information Technology For High School Students In Virginia – An Environmental Scan, Amy Corning, Jonathan D. Becker, Jon Graham, James Carrigan, Keisha Tennessee

ICRE Publications

Over the past two decades, Virginia has invested substantially in STEM education, in part through specialized programs focused on computer science and information technology (CS/IT). This study represents the first effort to identify Virginia’s specialized secondary CS/IT programs and examine them collectively. Findings from the statewide environmental scan indicate that the programs are delivered through a wide variety of institutional structures, including Governor’s STEM Academies, Governor’s Schools, specialty centers, and academies, but most often through Career and Technical Education (CTE) centers. Programs tend to be concentrated in metropolitan areas, and some rural divisions may not be served. The programs provide …

Law In Society: Defending Hart, Alma Diamond Jan 2025

Law In Society: Defending Hart, Alma Diamond

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

I revisit the debate between Joseph Raz and H. L. A. Hart concerning the nature of legal content and reasoning. Raz contended that legal reasoning should be analyzed as a form of moral reasoning. In contrast, Hart emphasized the distinction between legal and moral content, proposing that legal reasoning is a form of what I will call social-institutional reasoning. I characterize social-institutional reasoning in terms of the agent-relative, domain-specific, universal, and content-insensitive justifications it draws upon. I evaluate Raz’s moralized analysis and argue that it obscures the distinctive contribution that law’s social and institutional grounds play in our understanding of …

Puppy Dog Eyes: Begging For Treats And The Regulation Of Dog Breeding, Abigail Barford Jan 2025

Puppy Dog Eyes: Begging For Treats And The Regulation Of Dog Breeding, Abigail Barford

Kentucky Journal of Equine, Agriculture, & Natural Resources Law

In this note, Abigail Barford explores the lack of regulation over dog breeding in Kentucky, particularly the harms caused by puppy mills and backyard breeders. Barford explains that loopholes in the Animal Welfare Act and Kentucky’s absence of state-level protections contribute to dog overpopulation, inhumane conditions, environmental damage, and financial burdens on taxpayers. Barford argues for Kentucky to adopt strong breeding regulations modeled on Pennsylvania’s laws and its own equine breeding system. She proposes statewide legislation to license breeders, enforce humane standards of care, and regulate small-scale breeding to curb overpopulation and protect animal welfare.

Appraising Records, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas Jan 2025

Appraising Records, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas

Published Works

This chapter operationalizes archival appraisal as a values-driven, lifecycle activity that begins in pre-custodial conversations and continues through transfer, accessioning, stabilization, description, migration/reformatting, and, when warranted, deaccessioning. It reframes appraisal as both selection and retention, not merely separation, and offers guiding principles: assess long-term research value, preserve context, and acknowledge the rarity of true uniqueness. The authors translate strategy into practice through functional analysis and scaled prioritization (e.g., adaptations of the Minnesota Method), showing how to map organizational or personal functions to record types to widen evidentiary breadth. Practical tools include creator interviews, top-level surveys of born-digital environments, and structured …

Appraisal And Acquisition Strategies In Collecting Repositories, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas Jan 2025

Appraisal And Acquisition Strategies In Collecting Repositories, Maureen Cresci Callahan, David Staniunas

Published Works

This chapter explores the principles, values, and practices that shape intentional collecting and acquisitions work in archival repositories. The authors argue that acquisitions are a form of public service, requiring archivists to engage actively and responsibly with communities to diversify the historical record and counteract the biases of passive or unexamined collecting. Drawing on case studies from institutions such as Northeastern University, the Minnesota Historical Society, and the New York State Archives, the chapter outlines models and strategies for building trust with donors, navigating power dynamics, and aligning acquisitions with institutional mission and capacity. Topics include advisory boards, documentation strategy, …

Form-Meaning Mappings Of Cyclic Gestures, Wilho Macneil Jan 2025

Form-Meaning Mappings Of Cyclic Gestures, Wilho Macneil

Linguistics ETDs

Hirrel (2018) examines form-meaning mappings between speech and co-articulated cyclic gestures, identifying meanings associated with such gestures. To test replicability, this thesis analyzes two functional-semantic domains: modification (adverbs, quantifiers) and morphosyntactic constructions (complex sentences, English Progressive) and their relationship to cyclic gestures. About 12 hours of video was coded in ELAN for cyclic gestures (n=586) and analyzed textually for speech instances (n=1919) of target constructions. Contrary to Hirrel’s predictions, cyclic gestures were not more commonly co-articulated with adverbs than quantifiers and were also not more commonly co-articulated with complex sentences than the English Progressive Construction. Neither pattern reached statistical significance …

Deficiencies In The Judicial Classification Of Cryptocurrencies Indicating The Need For Legislative Alternatives, Ethan Johnson Jan 2025

Deficiencies In The Judicial Classification Of Cryptocurrencies Indicating The Need For Legislative Alternatives, Ethan Johnson

Journal of Legislation

The cryptocurrency industry is desperate for regulatory clarification, which would stabilize and secure cryptocurrency and, ultimately, promote increased investment. How the United States ultimately chooses to pursue cryptocurrency regulation has massive implications for future investment and the development of this technology. Disagreement over how to classify cryptocurrency under the investment contract test created in SEC v. Howey, including the recent Second Circuit split, has led to calls for resolving legislation. Cryptocurrency legislation has recently been passed by the European Union, and there are currently proposals for legislation before Congress in the United States.

This Note considers the context surrounding …

The Great War (Taylor's Version): Examining The New Era Of Recording Artists & Master Recording Ownership, Victoria B. Villanueva Jan 2025

The Great War (Taylor's Version): Examining The New Era Of Recording Artists & Master Recording Ownership, Victoria B. Villanueva

Journal of Legislation

In 2019, Taylor Swift took to social media to voice her unease with the recent sale of her entire master recording catalogue to Ithaca Holdings, a sale that allegedly occurred without her explicit permission. Following a series of negotiations, holdouts, and ultimate deadlock, Swift made the critical and costly decision to re-record and re-release each of those six albums under her sole ownership in an effort to reclaim them as her own work—re-recordings publicly denoted by “Taylor’s Version”. This highly-publicized feud brought to the public’s attention a decades-long conflict between the recording artist and the recording company, one that has …

Multi-Valued Variational Inequalities For Variable Exponent Double Phase Problems: Comparison And Extremality Results, Siegfried Carl, Vy Khoi Le, Patrick Winkert Jan 2025

Multi-Valued Variational Inequalities For Variable Exponent Double Phase Problems: Comparison And Extremality Results, Siegfried Carl, Vy Khoi Le, Patrick Winkert

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We prove existence and comparison results for multi-valued variational inequalities in a bounded domain Ω of the form (Formula presented.) where A:W1,H(Ω)→W1,H(Ω)∗ given by (Formula presented.) for u∈W1,H(Ω), is the double phase operator with variable exponents and W1,H(Ω) is the associated Musielak–Orlicz Sobolev space. First, an existence result is proved under some weak coercivity condition. Our main focus aims at the treatment of the problem under consideration when coercivity fails. To this end we establish the method of sub–super-solution for the multi-valued variational inequality in the space W1, H(Ω) based on appropriately defined sub- and super-solutions, which yields the existence …

Material Vulnerabilities In Aviation: A Comparative Study Of Hiduminium Rr58 In The Concorde, Siddhant Singh, Kuldeep Agarwal

Automotive and Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department Publications

The catastrophic crash of Air France Flight 4590 in the year 2000 disclosed huge flaws in the material used to manufacture the Concorde fuel tanks, Hiduminium RR58 (Aluminum 2618A). Although this alloy was selected due to its resistance to high-temperature, this research examines its thermal and mechanical vulnerabilities, especially in relation to Aluminum 7075-T3, a large-scale application of which in the Boeing 747 was widespread. By comparing tensile strength, thermal conductivity, fatigue life, and creep life, this research determines how Hiduminium RR58's over-aging susceptibility, thermal cycling degradation, and rupture due to impact were contributory causes to the disaster. The study …

The Effect Of Assistive Device Use On Timed Up And Go Scores In Healthy Older Adults With No Fall History: A Pilot Study, Megan Dowdal-Osborn Pt, Phd, C Bradley, K Caswell, J Teich, K Witte, Peter J. Rundquist Pt, Phd

DPT Capstone Posters

Introduction

Falls account for the most injury-related deaths in older adults and cost 50 billion dollars annually (1,2). The Timed up and Go(TUG) test is commonly used by PTs to identify individuals scoring >13.5 seconds as at risk for falling (3). Using this cutoff may justify physical therapy and be used as an assessment of improved function. The TUG is favored due to its inclusion of assistive device (AD) use. However, data suggest it may not be accurate in classifying those using ADs (4,5).

Objective

The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of AD use on TUG …

DPT Capstone Posters

Purpose/Hypothesis:

Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) has become an efficacious surgical procedure for people with massive rotator cuff tears and concurrent glenohumeral osteoarthritis. While shoulder biomechanics and functional outcomes after a RTSA have been studied extensively, there is limited research on the relationship between shoulder girdle osteokinematics and functional outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between shoulder girdle osteokinematics and functional outcomes, using the Penn Shoulder Score (PSS), in patients who underwent RTSA. It is hypothesized that there would be a significant correlation between osteokinematic variables and the PSS. Participants: 20 participants (10 male) who …

Impact Of Trauma On Learning, Megan Rinerson Jan 2025

Impact Of Trauma On Learning, Megan Rinerson

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trauma has large and often long-lasting effects on individuals, particularly in how it influences learning in educational settings. When students experience trauma—whether from abuse, neglect, violence, or loss—it can significantly disrupt their ability to focus, process information, and regulate emotions, all of which are critical for academic success. This thesis explores the profound impact of trauma on students’ cognitive development and academic performance, emphasizing the neurological basis of trauma and its interference with the brain's learning pathways. Scientific research has shown that traumatic experiences can alter the structure and function of the brain, particularly in areas responsible for memory, attention, …
