Predicting Emotions Across Schizotypy Levels, Elyssa M. Barrick, Sarah Hope Lincoln
Predicting Emotions Across Schizotypy Levels, Elyssa M. Barrick, Sarah Hope Lincoln
Student Scholarship
Successfully navigating the social world requires making accurate predictions about others. Individual differences in emotion prediction–the ability to predict someone's subsequent emotion given their current emotional state–can lead to variability in social success. In this study (N = 1024) we found evidence that individuals with heightened schizotypy displayed worse emotion prediction accuracy. This difficulty with emotion prediction was associated with increased loneliness, diminished social support, and smaller social networks, partially mediating some of the social difficulties in individuals with heightened schizotypy. Individuals with heightened schizotypy showed disruptions to key sources of affective information, meaning they had less reliable information about …

Bridging Knowledge Gaps In Digital Forensics Using Unsupervised Explainable Ai, Zainab Khalid, Farkhund Iqbal, Mohd Saqib
All Works
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has found multi-faceted applications in critical sectors including Digital Forensics (DF) which also require eXplainability (XAI) as a non-negotiable for its applicability, such as admissibility of expert evidence in the court of law. The state-of-the-art XAI workflows focus more on utilizing XAI tools for supervised learning. This is in contrast to the fact that unsupervised learning may be practically more relevant in DF and other sectors that largely produce complex and unlabeled data continuously, in considerable volumes. This research study explores the challenges and utility of unsupervised learning-based XAI for DF's complex datasets. A memory forensics-based case …

Research has supported the effectiveness of narratives for promoting health behavior, but different narrative presentation formats (serial vs. episodic) have seldom been compared. Suspense theories suggest that serial narratives, which do not provide a full resolution at the end of an episode, may create higher motivation for continued engagement with a story. Forty-four 8 to 12-year-old children were randomly assigned to watch an animation series designed for an existing active video game in which the plot was delivered either continuously across multiple episodes (serial) or in multiple yet relatively independent self-contained episodes (episodic). Controlling for social desirability, children who watched …

Measuring How Much Judges Matter For Case Outcomes, Ryan W. Copus, Ryan Hübert
Measuring How Much Judges Matter For Case Outcomes, Ryan W. Copus, Ryan Hübert
Faculty Works
A large empirical literature examines how judges’ traits affect how cases get resolved. This literature has led many to conclude that judges matter for case outcomes. But how much do they matter? Existing empirical findings understate the true extent of judicial influence over case outcomes since standard estimation techniques hide some disagreement among judges. We devise a machine learning method to reveal additional sources of disagreement. Applying this method to the Ninth Circuit, we estimate that at least 38% of cases could be decided differently based solely on the panel they were assigned to.
