Recent Advances In Modeling Of Electrical Discharges In Planetary Atmospheres, Seth Gerow, Jared Nelson, Jeremy Riousset, Josef Dufek, Joshua Mendez

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Our work focuses on plasma discharges produced in various planetary atmospheres. This process can create luminescent emissions at low currents and low temperatures: glow and corona discharges. The parallel plate geometry used in Townsend’s theory lets us develop a theoretical formalism, with explicit solutions for the critical voltage effectively reproducing experimental Paschen curves. Here, we present a generalization of the classic parallel plate configurations to concentric spherical and coaxial cylindrical geometries in Earth, Mars, Titan, and Venus atmospheres. We show that glow coronæ form more easily in Mars’s low-pressure, CO2-rich atmosphere than in Earth’s high-pressure, N2-rich atmosphere. Additionally, we present …

Astrobiological Gigantism: An Examination Of Deep-Sea Gigantism In Extraterrestrial Oceans, Connor White, Katherine Campbell, Hannah Lyons, Alexander Evanow, Dr. Sean Crouse

Discovery Day - Daytona Beach

Astrobiological gigantism refers to the potential emergence of disproportionately large organisms in extraterrestrial aquatic environments, particularly within the subsurface oceans of water-based moons and exoplanets. This paper examines the evolutionary, ecological, and environmental factors that could drive the development of gigantism beyond Earth, drawing parallels with deep-sea gigantism observed in Earth's oceans. By integrating astrobiology, planetary science, and evolutionary biology, this research aims to establish a framework for understanding how life may evolve under extreme conditions and what implications such discoveries may have for the search for extraterrestrial life. Further, this study evaluates specific celestial bodies—Europa and Enceladus—that may provide …

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Introduction: Suicide in adolescents poses a major public health crisis as the second leading cause of death in youth. Suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) are a principal reason for psychiatric hospitalization among adolescents. Numerous studies across development have identified risk factors (e.g., depression, borderline personality (BPD) features, family history of suicide) associated with STBs, while research in adults largely reports that the affective component of psychopathy, captured by callous-unemotional (CU) traits, is negatively associated with STBs. However, the relationship between CU traits and STB risk among adolescents remains unclear.

Methods: The present study tested associations between self-reported CU …

This paper reviews existing literature on PCT courses organized by discipline, highlighting representative pedagogical strategies, …

An Elementary Approach To The Probability Distribution Of The Product Of Multiple Random Variables, Suwen Tian Jul 2025

An Elementary Approach To The Probability Distribution Of The Product Of Multiple Random Variables, Suwen Tian

Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal

Abstract There arenindependent identically distributed (i.i.d.) uniform random variables defined as ξ1,ξ2,…,ξn, valued in interval [0,k](k>0), and there is a constantmvalued in interval (0,kn). We study the distribution of the product of these random numbers and prove a formula calculating Pr(∏i=1nξi≤m). Interestingly, we find that the result is exactly the sum of the firstnterms in the Taylor series expansion of the function exp(x) with x=nlnk-lnm. Through considering the corresponding probability density function, we make an extension of the formula calculating Pr(∏i=1nξi≤m) to any positive realn, and the extended formula can be written in a …

Experimental results revealed significant differences in tensile behavior across the designs: Schwarz demonstrated the highest tensile strength (0.7 kN) and superior load-bearing capacity, while Lidinoid showed comparable strength but abrupt failure post-peak force. Neovius excelled in ductility with 7 mm elongation before failure, …

Political Participation And Competition In Concurrent Elections: Evidence From Italy, Federico Fabio Frattini Jul 2025

Political Participation And Competition In Concurrent Elections: Evidence From Italy, Federico Fabio Frattini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper investigates how concurrent national and local elections affect the local political participation and competition. Leveraging a quasi-experimental framework provided by Italy’s staggered electoral timing, the paper employs a difference-in-differences design. Estimates reveal that municipalities holding concurrent elections exhibit lower levels of local participation and competition. Moreover, the concurrent election increases participation by candidates with nationally-established parties, while decreases participation with independent parties. This further translates into a higher votes share for nationally-established parties and a consequent higher probability of election. Elected mayors tend to have lower education and experience in office, while they are more likely to be from …

Unraveling The Scarf: How Dimensions Of The Scarf Model Influence The Relationship Between Workplace Exclusion And Turnover Intentions, Matthew Aplin-Houtz Jul 2025

Unraveling The Scarf: How Dimensions Of The Scarf Model Influence The Relationship Between Workplace Exclusion And Turnover Intentions, Matthew Aplin-Houtz

Ed G. Smith College of Business Graduate Works

Workplace exclusion – often subtle and difficult to detect – significantly contributes to employee disengagement and turnover, costing US organizations over $1 trillion annually. This study examines how exclusionary behaviors (EBs) influence turnover intentions (TOIs) through disruption of psychological needs, using Rock’s SCARF model (Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness, Fairness) and self-determination theory. A two-wave survey of full-time US employees (N = 277) assessed EB, SCARF-based need satisfaction, and TOI. Partial least squares structural equation modeling revealed that EB significantly undermines all five SCARF domains, but only fairness and status mediated the EB–TOI link. Certainty, autonomy, and relatedness did not have …

Alpha-Synuclein Dysregulation In Systemic Pathophysiology Of Synucleinopathies, Hallie H. Dolin, Bowen Zhou, Robert W. Maitta Jul 2025

Alpha-Synuclein Dysregulation In Systemic Pathophysiology Of Synucleinopathies, Hallie H. Dolin, Bowen Zhou, Robert W. Maitta

Faculty Scholarship

Alpha-synuclein (α-syn) has long been identified as the etiologic agent of multiple neurodegenerative diseases, the most common and well-known of which are Parkinson's disease (PD) and Lewy body dementia (LBD). While it is known that the pathophysiology of these synucleinopathies involves aggregation of improperly-folded α-syn, the mechanisms leading to its accumulation have not been fully identified. However, multiple pathways have been proposed, any or all of which may contribute to synucleinopathies. The role of α-syn in normal homeostasis and in other organ systems, especially the hematopoietic system, has been reported recently. Research within the last decade has shown that α-syn …

Theorizing Graphic Embodiments: A Feminist Perspective, Lisa Detora, Jeannie Ludlow Jul 2025

Theorizing Graphic Embodiments: A Feminist Perspective, Lisa Detora, Jeannie Ludlow

All Faculty Scholarship

In response to the increasing politicization and polarization of discourses around gender, sexuality, and the body, feminist theorists like Judith Butler call for feminism to strive toward flexibility and responsivity. This essay lays out some of the theoretical considerations that inform studies of graphic embodiment—or studies of embodiment in graphic narratives—both generally and within feminist studies, then examines several graphic texts by Tillie Walden and Élodie Durand that exemplify feminist theories of embodiment, with particular attention to the creative co-construction of embodied narratives.

Kshv Vil6 Inhibits Functional B Cell Maturation During De Novo Infection, Wajd Zakir, Jessica M. Osborn, Jennifer Totonchy Jul 2025

Kshv Vil6 Inhibits Functional B Cell Maturation During De Novo Infection, Wajd Zakir, Jessica M. Osborn, Jennifer Totonchy

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Despite causative links to lymphoproliferative disorders, little is known about early events governing KSHV infection in B lymphocytes. IL-6 signaling plays a critical role in KSHV-mediated disease, with human IL-6 (hIL6) levels correlating with viral load and disease progression. This dynamic is even more complex due to the coexistence of hIL6 and KSHV-encoded viral IL-6 (vIL6) in these diseases. We hypothesize that hIL6 and vIL6 play critical, separable and collective roles in the early stages of KSHV infection in B cells. In this study, we use our ex vivo model of KSHV infection in human tonsil lymphocytes to investigate the …

On The Connection Between Sport And Morality: Does Russell’S ‘Continuity Thesis’ Hold Water?, Cesar R. Torres, Francisco Javier López Frías Jul 2025

On The Connection Between Sport And Morality: Does Russell’S ‘Continuity Thesis’ Hold Water?, Cesar R. Torres, Francisco Javier López Frías

Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications

The connection between sport and morality is a key focus of J. S. Russell’s scholarly work. He rejects the ‘separation thesis’, which claims that sport has a significant degree of autonomy and thus its own set of values separate from those of society. Instead, he supports the ‘continuity thesis,’ which suggests that the moral values at the heart of sport reflect more basic moral values found outside its boundaries. Therefore, for Russell, individuals involved in sport do not leave ordinary morality to enter a separate sporting one. Rather, they engage in a social practice whose core moral principles are extensions …

Introduction To Sociology: Deviance And Crime, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D. Jul 2025

Introduction To Sociology: Deviance And Crime, Dr. Marcia Morrison Ph.D.

Open Educational Resources

Abstract

This paper explores the multifaceted concepts of deviance and crime by synthesizing major theoretical perspectives and contemporary research findings. Beginning with the fluid and culturally contingent nature of deviance, the discussion highlights how social norms, historical context, and power structures define what is considered deviant behavior. It examines the influence of economic elites on moral and legal standards, drawing on Marxist analyses, and considers the impact of societal labeling on personal identity through Lemert’s labeling theory.

The paper then delves into biological foundations of criminality, reviewing Lombroso’s atavism theory and modern research on genetic predispositions, including twin, adoption, and …
