This dissertation advances multimedia forensics by addressing three critical research areas that enhance the authenticity verification and analysis of digital media. Multimedia forensics, which encompasses techniques for examining images, videos, audio, and text, faces increasing challenges due to sophisticated editing tools and massive data volumes. In the first study, a fast source camera identification and verification method based on PRNU analysis is proposed for video forensic investigations. By integrating camera rolling and I-frame analysis, this approach achieves a processing speed improvement of at least 15 times over conventional frame-by-frame methods while reducing false positives. The second study focuses on vehicular …

Effects Of Sediment Composition On Spartina Alterniflora And Juncus Roemerianus Productivity In Coastal Virginia: A Thin-Layer Sediment Placement Experiment, Caitlin Hemphill
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Climate change poses a major threat to the health of estuaries and their coastal wetland systems. The Chesapeake Bay’s coastal salt marshes are at high risk of inundation due to sea-level rise and land subsidence. Restoration techniques for maintaining coastal marsh resistance to sea-level rise are being developed and refined, with thin layer placement (TLP) emerging as a feasible solution in many areas of the United States. Despite TLPs use across the country, additional research is needed on species-specific responses, sediment types, and geographically focused studies in the lower Chesapeake Bay. My research addresses these gaps by combining both greenhouse …

Faculty members who participated in the study use simulations as constructive social interactions; as comprehensive learning experiences integrating preparation, facilitation …
Inter-Cellular Forces Modulate Cell-Ecm Traction Forces, Zaria Booth
Inter-Cellular Forces Modulate Cell-Ecm Traction Forces, Zaria Booth
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Epithelial cells are among the most abundant cell types in the human body, making up sheets of epithelial tissues that cover the linings of organs and body cavities. Cellular adhesion and force transmission across epithelial tissues are crucial in maintaining tissue integrity and ensuring proper tissue regeneration. Defects in cellular force transmission have been found in various diseases, including cancer. Force transmission at cell-cell and cell-ECM junctions drive cell survival and development. It has been previously shown that changes in cell-ECM traction directly modulates forces at cell-cell contacts. In this study, we aim to determine the effects of perturbations in …

The unique experiences of people who identify with a gender beyond the binary paradigm dominant in the Global West are not well understood. The literature provides little insight into the experiences and perspectives of these individuals in a variety of contexts, including in their workplaces. As various social movements collide, they bring amplified attention to the mental health of marginalized communities and to workers, as well as the dynamics of modern work environments, and the specific needs of certain individuals doing certain types of work. The current study explored the experiences of gender non-binary individuals (GNI) working as helper-educators engaged …
Drivers And Consequences Of Changes In Nectar Microbiome Composition Across Spatial And Biological Scales, Daniel A. Barker
Drivers And Consequences Of Changes In Nectar Microbiome Composition Across Spatial And Biological Scales, Daniel A. Barker
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Microbial communities inhabiting floral nectar, known as the nectar microbiome, are important mediators of plant-pollinator interactions. However, the ecological and environmental factors that shape the composition of these microbial communities remain poorly understood. While previous studies have examined the effects of a few microbial groups, typically independent of one another, on one plant or pollinator species, this dissertation takes a wide-scale approach to explore how abiotic conditions and biotic interaction’s structure microbial communities within floral nectar. Furthermore, I also quantify how variation in microbial richness and identity influences pollinator behavior and plant reproductive success.
This dissertation shows that microbial abundance …

The Intersection Of Appalachian Identity And Gambling Behavior, Noah S. Anderson
The Intersection Of Appalachian Identity And Gambling Behavior, Noah S. Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the relation between Appalachian identity and gambling behavior among students in central Appalachia (n = 395). One-way ANOVAs revealed no significant differences in engagement, F(2, 392) = 0.65, p = .523, or severity, F(2, 392) = 0.33, p = .718, across identification groups. Moderated regression showed that identity did not significantly moderate the engagement–severity relation (B = 0.073, p = .099), though engagement itself was a strong predictor of harm (B = 0.696, p < .001, R² = .521). Negative affect predicted both engagement (B = 0.074, p = .001) and severity (B = 0.069, p = .001), while identity remained non-significant. Logistic regression found that identity predicted gambling engagement (Exp(B) = 1.18, p = .034) only when controlling for severity. These findings relay the importance of empirical efforts in Appalachia and suggest that Appalachian identity may not be an independent risk factor in gambling behavior.
Cattle Regenerative Grazing Effects On Bat Activity In Southern Appalachia, Seth Morelock
Cattle Regenerative Grazing Effects On Bat Activity In Southern Appalachia, Seth Morelock
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Livestock farming accounts for about 70% of agricultural activity, with continuous grazing as the dominant conventional practice. However, this method often degrades biodiversity and ecosystem health through overgrazing. Regenerative grazing practices offer a potential ecologically sustainable approach to cattle management. Insectivorous bats are known to use agroecosystems for foraging and roosting habitats, offering an opportunity to assess their response to regenerative grazing. Using passive acoustic monitors, we evaluated the response of bats to cattle within regenerative grazed farms in East Tennessee, USA. Overall bat activity declined when cattle entered and exited paddocks, except for the tri-colored bat (Perimyotis subflavus …

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This study investigates the combined influence of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) with distinct absorption kinetics and extended mixing sequences on the rheological, mechanical, and transport properties of high-performance concrete (HPC). Two SAPs—an ionic acrylamide-co-acrylic acid copolymer (SAP-P) and a non-ionic acrylamide polymer (SAP-B)—were incorporated at an internal curing level of 100%. The impact of extended mixing times (3, 5, and 7 min) following SAP addition was systematically evaluated. Results showed that longer mixing durations led to increased superplasticizer demand and higher plastic viscosity due to continued water absorption by SAPs. However, yield stress remained relatively stable owing to the dispersing effect …

Theses
Directional migration of cells is one of the most important physiological processes, necessary for tissue and organ development. It also plays a crucial role in pathological conditions such as cancer metastasis. This directed migration is influenced by various factors present in the native environment, which guide cells to migrate steadily in a specific direction. Due to its importance, over the years, a lot of emphasis has been placed on understanding and exploring the biochemical and biophysical factors that direct cell migration. In addition to the commonly studied biochemical and biophysical cues, contact guidance from collagen fibers, in the native matrix, …

A unique linear trail of diffuse galaxies was recently identified in the NGC 1052 field. This trail includes the remarkable, ultradiffuse galaxies DF2 and DF4, which lack dark matter and host unusually luminous globular clusters. It has been proposed that the trail formed via a high-speed collision between two gas-rich dwarf galaxies. This scenario predicts that the trail galaxies are kinematically connected and follow a specific trend in radial velocity as a function of position, based on the known velocities and positions of DF2 and DF4. To test this hypothesis, we measured radial velocities for seven additional galaxies on the …

The decomposition of oceanic flow into its geostrophically balanced and unbalanced motions carries theoretical and practical significance for the oceanographic community. These two motions have distinct dynamical characteristics and affect the transport of tracers differently from one another. The launch of the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite provides a prime opportunity to diagnose the surface balanced and unbalanced motions on a global scale at an unprecedented spatial resolution. Here, we apply dynamic-mode decomposition (DMD), a linear-algebraic data-driven method, to tidally-forced idealized and realistic numerical simulations at submesoscale-permitting resolution and one-day-repeat SWOT observations of sea-surface height (SSH) in the …

Importance: Documentation burden is associated with clinician burnout. To address documentation burden, Mass General Brigham (MGB) in Somerville, Massachusetts, and Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, Georgia, have piloted ambient documentation technology (ADT), which develops artificial intelligence-drafted clinical notes from clinician-patient conversations.
Objective: To examine the prevalence of ADT use and its association with clinicians' experience of documentation burden and burnout before and after use.
Design, setting, and participants: This survey study included clinicians who used ADT for at least 42 days and responded to both the pre- and postsurveys (onboarded February 27 to July 31, 2024, at MGB and July 19, …

In peripheral arterial disease (PAD), antiangiogenic VEGF-A165b isoform overexpression in monocytes contributes to impaired collateralization. Serine-arginine protein-kinase-1 (SRPK1) regulates VEGF splicing. To determine whether SRPK1 controlled monocytic VEGF, impairing collateralization, we investigated SRPK1 inhibition and monocyte-specific knockout in mouse models of and in human monocytes from PAD. VEGF-A165b activity was measured by coculture of monocytes from patients with PAD with endothelial cells with SRPK1 inhibition. Mice with impaired revascularization due to soluble-frizzled-related-protein-5 knockout (Sfrp5-/-), monocyte-specific Wnt5a gain-of-function (LysM-Wnt5aGOF), or obese mice on a high-fat high-sucrose (HF/HS) diet were subjected to femoral artery ligation and treated with …

Parabolic flight serves as an important terrestrial analog to study acute physiological changes in microgravity without the need for space travel. During a parabolic flight, alternating hypergravity and microgravity phases, lasting up to 40 seconds, enable research into ophthalmic changes. In this review, we discuss the application of parabolic flight as a platform to study microgravity-related changes that might impact ophthalmology including intraocular pressure, intracranial pressure, choroidal blood flow, and modified eye movement patterns. We further highlight how these insights could aid our understanding of vestibulo-ocular reflexes and conditions such as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). While the brief duration …
