A. Syllabus His 207 Comparative Twentieth Century South African And United States Civil Rights And Voting Rights Histories, Frankie Nicole Weaver
Frankie Nicole Weaver, Comparative Twentieth Century South African and United States Civil Rights and Voting Rights Histories
Originally shared as an in-person comparative upper-level undergraduate history course, this course was adapted for online, virtual use. It works well in either format; however, if you share it virtually, I strongly encourage at least one weekly synchronous class meeting and utilizing breakout rooms to promote discussion. Also, provide discussion questions and randomly enter breakout rooms to facilitate discussion --ensuring that engaging discussions occur. I recommend offering both in-person and virtual office hours, regardless.

Sociological Dichotomies Of Mława, Poland, Over Time: Misplaced Concreteness, Individual Triumph, Social Tragedy, Joseph Drew
Comparative Civilizations Review
For many years, I have been an active member of the International Society for the Comparative Study of Civilizations and Editor-in-Chief of its journal, the Comparative Civilizations Review. Since the 1960s, I have also been a university administrator and a professor, globe-trotting to learn about societies near and far, their rises and falls. Yet even though I lived and worked in Prague, as president of a university, not far from the Polish border, I had never set foot in that country, notwithstanding that my paternal grandfather came from there.

Merit Transference And The Paradox Of Merit Inflation, Matthew Hammerton
Merit Transference And The Paradox Of Merit Inflation, Matthew Hammerton
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Many religious traditions and ethical systems hold that individuals accrue merit through their good intentions, acts, and character, and demerit through their bad intentions, acts, and character. This merit and demerit, accumulated by individuals throughout their lives, gives each person a kind of ethical “score” that can determine what they deserve, and influence whether good or bad things happen to them (e.g., divine punishments and rewards, a favourable or unfavourable rebirth, etc.). In some traditions (most notably Buddhism, but also to a limited extent in Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity), “merit transference” is a feature of these merit-based ethical systems. This …

Supporting Satisfaction, Satisfying Support: Bidirectional Associations Of Social Support And Life Satisfaction, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia, Andree Hartanto, William Tov
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Existing literature has explored the impact of social support (SS) on life satisfaction (LS). However, the reciprocal relationship—that is, the influence of LS on SS—remains understudied, despite extant theoretical support. In addressing this gap, the present study employed bivariate latent growth modeling to examine bidirectional associations between SS and LS trajectories among 8,449 middle-aged and older adults in Singapore, over seven waves spanning almost 6 years. Results provided evidence supporting the notion of bidirectional associations. Specifically, baseline SS positively predicted subsequent changes in LS, and baseline LS positively predicted subsequent changes in SS. Findings underscore the potential for interventions and …

The growth of the internet and social media as a communication platform has increased the incidence of cyberbullying victimisation. While there has been increasing research interest on the antecedents of cyberbullying perpetration, little is known on why some individuals who themself experience cyber victimisation are more likely to become cyberbullying perpetrators. Considering the large number of individuals who experience cyberbullying victimisation in the current, highly digitalised world, this trend of victims turning into bullies poses a worrisome possibility and deserves research attention. One promising individual difference that could potentially moderate the relationship between cyberbullying victimisation can lead to cyberbullying perpetration …

Meaning-making systems underlie perceptions of the efficacy of threat-mitigating behaviors. Religion and science both offer threat mitigation, yet these meaning-making systems are often considered incompatible. Do such epistemological conflicts swamp the desire to employ diverse precautions against threats? Or do individuals—particularly individuals who are highly reactive to threats—hedge their bets by using multiple threat-mitigating practices despite their potential epistemological incompatibility? Complicating this question, perceptions of conflict between religion and science likely vary across cultures; likewise, pragmatic features of precautions prescribed by some religions make them incompatible with some scientifically-based precautions. The COVID-19 pandemic elicited diverse precautions thus providing an opportunity …
The Return Of Chinese Emigrants: Legal Barriers And Local Practices, Jiaqi M. Liu
The Return Of Chinese Emigrants: Legal Barriers And Local Practices, Jiaqi M. Liu
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
While China has observed an increasing influx of foreign nationals, a notable phenomenon involves Chinese emigrants opting for return migration to reestablish themselves in their country of origin. The process of emigrants returning to China, referred to as “return and resettlement” (huiguo dingju 回国定居) in official terminology, however, is not automatic. Emigrant returnees must fulfill a set of selective and documentary criteria, implying that only economically affluent and duly documented migrants are permitted to resettle in China. Through a comprehensive review of national policies and an analysis of local practices in a diaspora hometown, this chapter argues that the hukou …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The effectiveness of Underground Hydrogen Storage (UHS) as a long-term solution for sustainable green energy relies on secure containment in geological formations and optimized storage and retrieval processes, where fluid-rock interactions, particularly the wettability of the rock, play a crucial role. Additionally, the pre-injection of a cushion gas, such as CO2, to maintain sufficient pressure for hydrogen (H2) withdrawal can influence wettability. This study employed the tilted plate method to examine contact angle hysteresis of the wetting phase (water) on a carbonate rock substrate, measuring advancing and receding contact angles in the presence of various H2-CO2 mixtures ([0.30 CO2 + …
The Imperial Gaze: Affective Governance, Hybrid Cartography, And China’S U-Shaped Line, William A. Callahan
The Imperial Gaze: Affective Governance, Hybrid Cartography, And China’S U-Shaped Line, William A. Callahan
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
This article develops ‘the imperial gaze’ concept to explore how maps not only represent the world, but also do things in geopolitics, even provoking mass demonstrations. It examines China’s early-modern and contemporary maps to highlight how they create an imperial gaze that guides Chinese understandings of world order. If your cartographic ‘view of the world’ produces your ideological ‘worldview’, then it is important to see how China’s early-modern maps inform the PRC’s twenty-first-century claims in the South China Sea. The article argues that Chinese cartography does things in geopolitics by mobilising the affective governance of an assemblage of hybrid combinations …
Privacy And Peer-To-Peer Payment Apps, Stephen L. Baglione, Louis A. Tucci
Privacy And Peer-To-Peer Payment Apps, Stephen L. Baglione, Louis A. Tucci
Journal of Global Business Insights
Apps for our smartphones are ubiquitous. Free apps usually require exchanging personal information. Mobile payments in the U.S. are expected to almost double by 2027. Peer-to-peer (P2P) payment apps are a subcategory of said apps. Venmo is a P2P payment app that gathers user data from their smartphone and publicizes user transactions. A between-subject survey shows respondents are concerned about privacy with P2P payment apps, even when only describing what the app does. Clusters are identified when examining involvement with P2P payment apps. The covariate online privacy was statistically significant; however, age, gender, and social media use were not statistically …

Understanding Entrepreneurial Culture: Resident Perspectives In A Post-Soviet Transition Country, Azamat Maksudunov, Kyialbek Dyikanov
Journal of Global Business Insights
The concept of entrepreneurial culture has frequently appeared in academic studies dedicated to both developed and developing countries. However, this topic has not been sufficiently investigated in the case of post-Soviet Central Asian countries, particularly in the context of Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan can be an intriguing case study for analyzing entrepreneurial culture, as it has experienced distinct political and economic paradigms throughout its historical trajectory. This paper aims to empirically examine the current state and provide suggestions for the further development of entrepreneurial culture in Kyrgyzstan. This research is based on a conceptual framework developed through a review of existing literature …

Linking Core Concepts And Competencies In General Chemistry Via Gowin’S Theory Of Learning And Vee Heuristic, Vijay Vyas, Scott A. Reid
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The content in introductory science courses has often been criticized as “miles wide and inches deep”. In general chemistry, several revisions have focused on framing around a set of core or anchoring concepts, and we recently adapted the anchoring concepts content map (ACCM) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to develop an anchoring concept-based curriculum for our general chemistry courses. In this article, we describe efforts to connect this curriculum with laboratory learning using Gowin’s theory of learning and the associated knowledge Vee heuristic. Within this framework, the laboratories themselves become events connecting the conceptual and methodological domains, …

Voluntary firearm safety actions avoid Second Amendment scrutiny, but rely on individuals recognizing their own risks. This could be aided by a network of healthcare professionals that have received proper training and information about all available tools to help prevent firearm-related suicide attempts, and combining the trust of clinicians and firearm owners could represent an opportunity to inform and educate in a manner that will engage patients.

Total hip and knee arthroplasty are common surgical procedures aimed at improving mobility and quality of life. Despite surgical advances, postoperative complications remain a concern, particularly for patients with comorbidities and poor nutritional status. Immunonutrition, the targeted administration of nutrients that modulate inflammation, such as arginine, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, has been shown to reduce infections, complications in wound healing, and shorten hospital length of stay. This review examines current evidence on the role of immunonutrition in hip and knee arthroplasty, focusing on the mechanisms of key nutrients, clinical application of supplementation, and areas for future investigation. Despite promising …

Perioperative identification of ischemic-hypoxic tissue is essential for reducing the risk of mastectomy skin flap necrosis (MSFN), a major complication following mastectomy. Implant-based breast reconstruction is jeopardized in the presence of MSFN. However, existing technologies are limited by depth insensitivity, dye-related risks, the need for contact sensors, and an inability to simultaneously assess both blood flow and oxygenation. A multi-wavelength speckle contrast diffuse correlation tomography (MW-scDCT) system was developed for noncontact, dye-free, and depth-sensitive imaging of tissue hemodynamics in a rat model incorporating four distinct flap scenarios: sham (SH), implant (IM), half necrosis (HN), and full necrosis (FN), representing varying …

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of liver hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) lesions in patients with pre-existing diuretic-resistant ascites. There is logical hesitation among clinicians to pursue MWA in these decompensated patients for fear of worsening an already bleak prognosis, but there is limited evidence to justify this behavior. Material and Methods: A retrospective review of HCC treated with percutaneous MWA at a single center was performed. 18 patients who underwent CT-guided MWA with pre-existing diuretic-resistant ascites were identified. A control group of 29 patients …
