Impacts Of U.S. Environmental Regulations On Industry, Xiao Ji, Mengyu Wang, Tianyi Zhang Sep 2025

Impacts Of U.S. Environmental Regulations On Industry, Xiao Ji, Mengyu Wang, Tianyi Zhang

Sim Kee Boon Institute for Financial Economics

This paper analyzes the impacts of U.S. environmental regulations on industry, focusing on command-and-control environmental regulations (CCER) and market-based environmental regulations (MBER). Drawing on empirical data from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) spanning over four decades, we examine key legislation such as the Clean Water Act (CWA), Clean Air Act (CAA), and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), while also discussing more recent frameworks like the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). Our findings suggest that although penalties under CCER contribute to immediate compliance, they often fail to elicit long-term changes in corporate behavior. In contrast, MBER, exemplified by the IRA, …

Time Series Changes Of Surficial Sediments On Eastern Ship Shoal, Louisiana Shelf, Adam Gartelman, Kehui Xu, Brian J. Roberts, David Samuel Johnson, Madison Liotta Sep 2025

Time Series Changes Of Surficial Sediments On Eastern Ship Shoal, Louisiana Shelf, Adam Gartelman, Kehui Xu, Brian J. Roberts, David Samuel Johnson, Madison Liotta

Faculty Publications

Ship Shoal, a large transgressive sand body on the Louisiana continental shelf, is a critical sediment source for coastal restoration. This study evaluates spatial and temporal variability in sediment grain size, percents organic matter (%OM), and carbonate (%CO3) across the shoal crest (REF), Caminada Dredge Pit (CAM), and Terrebonne Dredge Pit (TER). Sediment samples were collected between 2020 and 2022 using box cores and analyzed for grain size, %OM, and %CO3, with temporal and spatial patterns assessed through statistical comparisons, correlation analyses, and random forest regression models. Results show that dredged areas act as sinks for fine-grained, organic-rich sediments, with …

A Comparison Of Characteristics Of Infilling Sediments In Three Mud-Capped Dredge Pits On The Louisiana Continental Shelf, Wenqiang Zhang, Kehui Xu, Chaochen Jia, Adam Gartelman, Omar Alawneh, Navid Jafari, Colin Herke, Madison Liotta, Samuel J. Bentley Sep 2025

A Comparison Of Characteristics Of Infilling Sediments In Three Mud-Capped Dredge Pits On The Louisiana Continental Shelf, Wenqiang Zhang, Kehui Xu, Chaochen Jia, Adam Gartelman, Omar Alawneh, Navid Jafari, Colin Herke, Madison Liotta, Samuel J. Bentley

Faculty Publications

Due to high sedimentation rate up to ~1 m/year, mud-capped dredge pits (MCDP) are often considered natural laboratories for studying sedimentary processes, slope stability and the impacts of dredging activities on marine environments. Although many studies have been performed on the Louisiana shelf, there is a lack of high spatial resolution research covering the eastern, central and western Louisiana shelf to comprehensively investigate sediment infilling. Eighteen vibracores were collected from the Peveto Channel dredge pit (PC), Raccoon Island dredge pit (RI) and Sandy Point dredge pit (SP), and more than 1300 samples were analyzed to study the spatial variation in …

Football Spending For Success: Analyzing Investment And Team Performance In Ncaa Fbs Programs, Keunsu Han, Jin Dong Park, Kyungeun (Karry) Kwon

Journal of Applied Sport Management

This study examines the relationship between financial investment and team performance in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) football programs from 2010 to 2023. Key variables include total football spending, head coach salaries and bonuses, and win-loss records. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression models were used to examine these associations, controlling for conference affiliation by distinguishing between the so-called power and non-power conferences. The results indicate that greater investment in football operations and coaching compensation is significantly associated with higher win percentages, particularly within power conference programs. However, the impact of financial investment on final rankings differs by conference …

An Examination Of The Stock Returns Of Top Partners During Of The 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Timothy Koba Sep 2025

An Examination Of The Stock Returns Of Top Partners During Of The 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Timothy Koba

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The International Olympic Committee generated $7.6 billion in revenue from 2017-2021, with 30% coming from The Olympic Partnership (TOP) Program marketing rights, which has grown from $96 million to $2.3 billion since 1985. In addition to the direct sponsorship costs, additional activation costs are incurred by the organization as they market, advertise, and highlight their product during the event they sponsor to achieve a financial return. The purpose of this study is to assess whether TOP partners outperform a matched non-partner during the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

This study utilizes an event study methodology to create three event windows related …

Making Sense Of The State's Duty To Negotiate In Good Faith Under Igra: The "Permits Such Gaming" Requirement And Legitimate State Interests In Gaming Compact Negotiations, Kathryn R.L. Rand, Steven Andrew Light Sep 2025

Making Sense Of The State's Duty To Negotiate In Good Faith Under Igra: The "Permits Such Gaming" Requirement And Legitimate State Interests In Gaming Compact Negotiations, Kathryn R.L. Rand, Steven Andrew Light

UNLV Gaming Law Journal

Under the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA), a tribe may conduct Class III or casino-style gaming only in a state that “permits such gaming” and in accordance with an approved compact between the tribe and the state. But the appropriate interpretation of IGRA’s “permits such gaming” requirement and how it relates to the state’s duty to negotiate gaming compacts in good faith remain murky more than 35 years after IGRA was enacted, hindering both compact negotiations between individual states and tribes and the entire tribal gaming industry. In this Article, we clarify and develop legal standards to apply to …

A General Test For Functional Inequalities, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Wenyu Zhou Sep 2025

A General Test For Functional Inequalities, Jia Li, Zhipeng Liao, Wenyu Zhou

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper develops a nonparametric test for general functional inequalities that include conditional moment inequalities as a special case. It is shown that the test controls size uniformly over a large class of distributions for observed data, importantly allowing for general forms of time series dependence. New results on uniform growing dimensional Gaussian coupling for general mixingale processes are developed for this purpose, which readily accommodate most applications in economics and finance. The proposed method is applied in a portfolio evaluation context to test for “all-weather” portfolios with uniformly superior conditional Sharpe ratio functions.

Harnessing The Electronic Health Record To Identify And Enroll People With Epilepsy Into A Self-Management Program: Implementation And Scalability In A Clinical Setting, Clara Adeniyi, Richard Barigye, Jessica Black, Nicole Fiorelli, Carrie Rogers, Martha Sajatovic Sep 2025

Harnessing The Electronic Health Record To Identify And Enroll People With Epilepsy Into A Self-Management Program: Implementation And Scalability In A Clinical Setting, Clara Adeniyi, Richard Barigye, Jessica Black, Nicole Fiorelli, Carrie Rogers, Martha Sajatovic

Faculty Scholarship

Rationale: “Self-management for people with epilepsy and a history of negative health events” (SMART) is an 8-week, remotely delivered, Epilepsy Self-Management (ESM) program. The ongoing EXPANDing self-management support in healthcare networks (EXPAND) initiative leveraged the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to identify SMART candidates, simplify recruitment, and reduce staff workload. Methods: This is an ongoing implementation effort at two Level 4 Epilepsy Centers (Iowa and Cincinnati) using the Epic EHR which follows 9326 People With Epilepsy (PWE). The EHR uses pre-visit screening to identify PWE with a recent seizure; barriers to medication adherence; depression symptoms; age 18–25; or residence in rural …

Social Cognition As A Mediator Between Neurocognition And Functional Outcome In Early Course Schizophrenia, Anju Kotwani, Jessica A. Wojtalik, Douglas D. Gunzler, Wilson J. Brown, Rochanne L. Honarvar, Martha Sajatovic Sep 2025

Social Cognition As A Mediator Between Neurocognition And Functional Outcome In Early Course Schizophrenia, Anju Kotwani, Jessica A. Wojtalik, Douglas D. Gunzler, Wilson J. Brown, Rochanne L. Honarvar, Martha Sajatovic

Faculty Scholarship

Social cognition is an established mediator between neurocognition and functional outcome in schizophrenia, but there is limited evidence for this model specifically in the early course, which is a critical window for intervention to reduce long-term disability. This study aimed to test the social cognition mediator model in the early course of schizophrenia and identify social cognitive subdomains that may have stronger indirect effects on the relationship between neurocognition and functional outcome. This secondary analysis utilized baseline cognitive and functional outcome data from a cognitive remediation trial for outpatients with early course schizophrenia (N = 102). A path analysis approach …

Christian Character Formation In A Culture Of Anger, Rebecca Konyndyk Deyoung Sep 2025

Christian Character Formation In A Culture Of Anger, Rebecca Konyndyk Deyoung

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Anger is a hot topic, perhaps especially for Christians. We might concede that it’s OK to be angry sometimes—for example, when human rights are violated. It’s not right to be complacent or indifferent in the face of that kind of intentional injury! At the same time, we might be wary of justifying anger, given how many times we’ve been harmed—or seen others harmed— by people who get too angry. No one who has encountered Christians ranting on social media thinks we need more of that kind of witness.

Patterns And Implications Of Missed Injuries On Computed Tomography Imaging In Older Blunt Trauma Patients, Arnav Mahajan, Vanessa P. Ho Sep 2025

Patterns And Implications Of Missed Injuries On Computed Tomography Imaging In Older Blunt Trauma Patients, Arnav Mahajan, Vanessa P. Ho

Faculty Scholarship

Background: Older adults sustain disproportionately morbid injuries from low energy mechanisms, yet guidance around computed tomography imaging is lacking for this demographic. We hypothesize that current imaging practices may lead to potentially missed injuries, increasing morbidity and mortality. Methods: A secondary analysis of a prospective multicenter study (11/2020–12/2021) of older blunt trauma patients was performed. Suboptimal imaging was defined as a mismatch between final injury diagnosis and initial computed tomography imaging. We compared optimally vs not optimally imaged patients to determine factors associated with suboptimal imaging and examined mortality, hospital length of stay, and critical care use with a multivariable …
