How Can Midwifery Care Decrease Perinatal Morbidity And Mortality And Address Health Inequities?, Heather Bradford, Ellen Tilden, Jennifer Kaeser Jagger, Ellen Chaney Solis
How Can Midwifery Care Decrease Perinatal Morbidity And Mortality And Address Health Inequities?, Heather Bradford, Ellen Tilden, Jennifer Kaeser Jagger, Ellen Chaney Solis
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
U.S. perinatal morbidity and mortality rates are high and rising and feature sizeable racial and ethnic disparities. One underutilized yet proven approach to improving U.S. perinatal health involves policy reform to more widely use midwifery models of care. Increased access to midwifery care is correlated with improved outcomes for families, including lower rates of interventions, increased rates of vaginal births and breastfeeding, and lower rates of neonatal deaths. Attendees will gain an overview of current U.S. midwifery models of care, philosophy, and outcomes, as well as effective midwifery care models that can improve perinatal health, such as racially and culturally …

The opioid and SUD epidemic drives a need to dramatically increase treatment opportunities, yet there is a dearth of practitioners who feel comfortable and competent in this area. And there are not enough specialists. To address this, we have developed an elective, online, asynchronous course for Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Social Work, and Public Health housed within a DNP program at UW School of Nursing. Course content includes concepts of trauma-informed practice (and education), stigma, etc., and are woven throughout the course. Use of telehealth simulation scenarios served to prepare students for therapeutic patient interactions and to practice skills of motivational …

Breaking Down Barriers To Becoming A Nurse, Shelby Britt Hall
Breaking Down Barriers To Becoming A Nurse, Shelby Britt Hall
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
It is estimated that between 2021-2031 there will be 194,500 openings for registered nurses (RNs) in the United States annually. The American Nurses’ Association calls for “real solutions” to this nursing shortage crisis by addressing barriers that prohibit students from earning nursing degrees. Barriers for students include personal financial status, exorbitant tuition, an unobliging work schedule, lack of emotional support, access to nursing programs and insufficient study time. Factors that support the obtainment of a nursing degree include employer support such as a flexible work schedule, tuition reimbursement or tuition funding.
A nursing professional development (NPD) position specializing in nursing …

Targeting Safety & Satisfaction In Hourly Rounds To Enhance Patient Experience On Ortho-Spinal Unit, Celia Nurse
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The purpose of this Value Improvement Project was to address the problem of declining patient experience on our Orthopedic Spinal Unit at our inpatient acute care facility and we used the CAHPS Likelihood to Recommend domain as out measurement tool. At the start of the project, we were at the 55th percentile rank for the second quarter of 2024. We decided to infuse our patient rounding with proactive interventions so that our rounds were not simply to say someone last saw the patient breathing at 1500 but to round with more patient centered purpose! Purposeful hourly rounding has emerged as …

Stress and anxiety are prevalent among nursing students, who encounter numerous academic, social, and personal pressures throughout their education (Franco et al., 2022; Oneiva-Zafra et al., 2020). Factors such as life events, financial issues, domestic conflicts, food insecurity, and preexisting mental health conditions amplify stress levels, impacting academic performance and overall well-being (Karaca et al., 2019; Moran et al., 2023). Studies have shown that supportive faculty behaviors correlate with reduced levels of depression, anxiety, and stress among undergraduate nursing students (Stubin et al., 2024). Responding to these needs, the School of Nursing recognized the importance of proactive support and initiated …

Prostate cancer (PCa) is the second most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of death. Despite this statistic, PCa also has a high survival rate when caught early. A radical prostatectomy (RP) is one of several treatment options and has two main adverse effects: erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. Based on these adverse effects, PCa is perceived as a “couple’s disease.” Therefore, this study aimed to understand the storied narratives of a partner and their relationship with their loved one who has undergone an RP. With a PCa diagnosis and surgical treatment, partners may experience higher …
Predictors For Different Levels Of Covid-19 Vaccination Among Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Adults, Cheryl Zlotnick, Orit Cohen Castel
Predictors For Different Levels Of Covid-19 Vaccination Among Immigrant And Non-Immigrant Adults, Cheryl Zlotnick, Orit Cohen Castel
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Overview: This study contributes to the literature by examining a comprehensive operationalization of vaccination status among working-age (21-49 years), immigrant and non-immigrant adults.
Background: The commonly used outcome, obtained any vaccination versus not, tends to overestimate COVID-19 vaccination utilization, distorting the associations found with covariates/predictors. More recent studies have used a three-variable COVID-19 status outcome of any, partial or complete vaccinations. However, they lacked a theoretical framework and focused on older and non-immigrant populations. This study examined working-age immigrants and non-immigrants, used the three-variable operationalization of COVID-19 vaccination, and was guided by Andersen’s Behavioral Model with its three factors …

Managing Dementia Behavioral Symptoms: Informal Caregivers’ Experience And Needs, Modupe Adewuyi, Xinyue Zhang, Lota Iwuagwu
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Eighty-three percent of persons with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (Pw-ADRD) rely on informal caregivers—mainly family and friends—for at-home care. In 2023, over 11 million dementia caregivers provided an estimated 18.4 billion hours of unpaid care, valued at $346.6 billion [1]. Although there is a wealth of literature on the roles of dementia informal caregivers, there is little data on their ability to manage the behavioral symptoms experienced by approximately 90% of Pw-ADRD [1], as well as the resources they utilize for support [2]. These symptoms have been positively correlated with functional and cognitive impairment leading to earlier placement …

Does Journal Writing Reduce Stress And Depression In Parents Of A Critically Ill Child?, Lauren Kemp, Cara Gallegos
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: An estimated 230,000 children are admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) annually in the United States. A child’s critical illness is stressful for the entire family, causing significant emotional distress among parents. The PICU experience can lead to the development of clinical distress and anxiety in parents following patient discharge. Journal writing is an intervention that has been effective for improving mental health outcomes in various populations. Several meta-analyses show small to moderately sized beneficial effects in improving depression, stress, and PTSD symptoms in the general population. Recently, there has been more interest surrounding the use of …

Due to underdeveloped skin and poor nutrient absorption, these infants are at high risk of skin injuries from improper adhesive use, leading to pain, infection, and increased care difficulty.
In October-November 2023, the MARSI rate in our unit was 7.27%, most often occurring during endotracheal tube tape removal. To address this, we collaborated with the NICU director, head nurse, and senior staff to develop MARSI-focused training, establish a "Medical Adhesive Skin Care …
There Are No Words: What Do You Call A Parent Who Has Lost A Child, Sandra K. Cesario
There Are No Words: What Do You Call A Parent Who Has Lost A Child, Sandra K. Cesario
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: There is no commonly used English word to describe a parent whose child is deceased. A child who has no parents is an orphan and a person who has lost a spouse is a widow(er). Absence of terminology to describe parents after the death of a child may contribute to difficulty in adapting to a new identity and alter societal expectations for grieving. Vilomah, a word borrowed from the Sanskrit language meaning "against the natural order," has emerged in non-nursing literature to describe a parent whose child has died. It is derived from the concept that parents …
