"Cold Words, Heartless And Miserable": Tolkien's Approach To Supernatural Horror, Dylan L. Henderson Oct 2025

"Cold Words, Heartless And Miserable": Tolkien's Approach To Supernatural Horror, Dylan L. Henderson

Journal of Tolkien Research

For the most part, scholars of supernatural horror do not consider J. R. R. Tolkien a contributor to that genre, a conclusion supported by many Tolkien specialists. And yet, horror plays a major role in many of Tolkien’s works, specifically The Lord of the Rings. Indeed, “Fog on the Barrow-downs” is basically a tale of supernatural horror that Tolkien has incorporated into his epic. This article examines that chapter in that context, comparing it to a similar short story by E. F. Benson, and this approach not only highlights the links between Tolkien and contemporaneous supernatural horror—the shares themes …

Nurses' Familiarity With Emergency Preparedness In Four Private Hospitals In Western Indonesia, Marisa Junianti Manik, Ade Lisatria Telaumbanua, Ribka Meinar Harja Gea, Trisno Berkat Damai Telaumbanua Oct 2025

Nurses' Familiarity With Emergency Preparedness In Four Private Hospitals In Western Indonesia, Marisa Junianti Manik, Ade Lisatria Telaumbanua, Ribka Meinar Harja Gea, Trisno Berkat Damai Telaumbanua

General Submissions: Clinical Settings Materials

Nurses play a vital role in disaster management by helping to reduce the long-term health effects of disasters. Preparedness involves a series of activities to anticipate and lessen losses. Studies from 2014 to 2019 showed that 45.8% to 78.5% of hospital nurses in various Asian countries had less than ideal preparedness for disasters and lacked awareness. The study aimed to describe nurses’ familiarity with emergency preparedness in four private hospitals in western Indonesia in April 2021. It used a quantitative descriptive approach with the translated Emergency Preparedness Information Questionnaire, comprising eight indicators. The sample included nurses from four private hospitals …

The Path Toward Spiritual Activism: Queer Latinx/A/O College Student (Muxerista) Activism As Sites Of Resistance, Hope, Joy, And Futurity, Roberto C. Orozco, J. Audra Williams Oct 2025

The Path Toward Spiritual Activism: Queer Latinx/A/O College Student (Muxerista) Activism As Sites Of Resistance, Hope, Joy, And Futurity, Roberto C. Orozco, J. Audra Williams

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This study examined collaborators’ engagement in activism as sites of resistance, hope, joy, and futurity. We answer the following research question: In what ways do Muxeristas (Revilla, 2012), or queer Latinx/a/o college student activists, envision and act on kinship and liberation in their activism? We conceptualize our response to this question through Anzaldúa’s (2002, 2015) concept of spiritual activism. Our data analysis articulates three main components of a spiritual activism practice for Muxeristas (Revilla, 2012), which include: 1) engaging in forms of resistance through a queer and feminist world-making, 2) centering joy and love with and for each other as …

Spiritual Grounding In Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley As A Model For Catholic Unity Across Cultures, Gabriel Antonio Gonzales Oct 2025

Spiritual Grounding In Sacred Soil: The Picuris/Peñasco Valley As A Model For Catholic Unity Across Cultures, Gabriel Antonio Gonzales

Master of Theological Studies Honors Theses

This thesis examines the Picuris/Peñasco Valley of Northern New Mexico as a unique case study for understanding Catholic unity amidst cultural plurality and historical tension. The study investigates how the confluence of Picuris Pueblo (Tiwa) Indigenous spirituality and Hispano/Spanish Colonial Catholic traditions has forged a profoundly localized and resilient faith community. Drawing upon historical analysis of colonial resistance, cultural anthropology, and theological reflection, this work argues that the concept of sacred land (sacred soil) functions as the central unifying principle. It reveals how the shared commitment to the land facilitated a process of religious and cultural syncretism, creating a form …

Addressing The Impact Of Foreign State-Owned Companies: Implications For Fair And Effective Merger Control, Annika Stöhr, Oliver Budzinski Oct 2025

Addressing The Impact Of Foreign State-Owned Companies: Implications For Fair And Effective Merger Control, Annika Stöhr, Oliver Budzinski

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

State-owned firms from third countries play an increasingly significant role in international mergers and acquisitions, raising concerns about distortions of competition. These distortions arise from state-backed financial advantages, preferential treatment, and industrial policy objectives, potentially undermining market competition. This paper categorises different forms of competitive distortions, focusing on acquisitions financed by foreign state resources. Through an analysis of German and EU merger control cases (2012-2023), we assess the extent of this phenomenon and the treatment of such transactions by the respective competition authorities. While direct state involvement remains rare, it is prevalent in strategic industries such as energy and transport. …

Evaluating Anti-Sickling Therapies For Sickle Cell Disease: A Microfluidic Assay For Red Blood Cell-Mediated Microvascular Occlusion Under Hypoxia, Zoe Sekyonda, Yuxuan Du, Solomon Oshabaheebwa, Payam Fadaei, Yusang B. Ley, Calvin Abonga, Michael A. Suster, Pedram Mohseni, Umut A. Gurkan

Faculty Scholarship

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is characterized by the polymerization of hemoglobin S (HbS) upon deoxygenation, leading to the formation of sickled red blood cells (RBCs) with reduced deformability. Under hypoxic conditions, the impaired RBC behavior significantly contributes to vaso-occlusive events, hemolysis, and end-organ damage. Consequently, RBC deformability serves as a pivotal hemorheological biomarker for evaluating disease severity and therapeutic response. The OcclusionChip, a microfluidic assay, measures RBCs deformability through microcapillary occlusion. However, its current hypoxic assay relies on a complex nitrogen gas setup, rendering it bulky, expensive, and unsuitable for point-of-care diagnostic use. Here, we optimized a chemically induced hypoxia …

Faculty Research 2025

SUMMARY: Lack of data integration remains a significant impediment to cancer research, and many analyses still require customized software to transform and prepare cancer data. We describe a software package to harmonize genetic and clinical cancer data into the GA4GH Phenopacket schema, an ISO standard for representing clinical case data. We integrated demographic, mutation, morphology, diagnosis, intervention, and survival data using case data from the National Cancer Institute for 12 cancer types. The Phenopacket standard provides a foundation for downstream use, including sophisticated statistical and AI/ML analyses. We demonstrate fitness for purpose by using the integrated data to recapitulate a …

Histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are crucial to eukaryotic genome regulation, with a range of reported functions and mechanisms of action. Though often studied individually, it has long been recognized that the modifications function by combinatorial synergy or antagonism. Interplay may involve PTMs on the same histone, within the same nucleosome (containing a histone octamer), or between nucleosomes in higher-order chromatin. Given this, the field must distinguish ever greater complexity, and the context in which it is studied, with brevity and precision. The proteoform was introduced to define individual forms of a protein by sequence and PTMs, followed by the nucleoform …

Creating The Polaris Initiative For First-Generation Undeclared Students, Jack Michaels Oct 2025

Creating The Polaris Initiative For First-Generation Undeclared Students, Jack Michaels

Masters Projects

First-generation undeclared students face compounded challenges in higher education, including lower sense of belonging, increased stress and anxiety, and higher attrition compared to their peers. While research has examined first-generation and undeclared students separately, little attention has been given to their intersecting identities. This paper provides a literature review of these students’ unique struggles and explores ways they may succeed throughout college. Living learning communities, first-year seminars, and interaction with faculty and academic advisors all have a positive impact on this student group. In response to the literature, The Polaris Initiative was created — a retention strategy for Grand Valley …

Growth Mindset In The Mathematics Classroom: Studying The Effects Of A Growth Mindset Intervention On High School Students In A Geometry Classroom, Katelyn Strauss

Mathematics Graduate Theses

Having a growth mindset is crucial to being successful in a mathematics classroom. However, many students believe themselves to be either “mathematics people” or “not mathematics people”. When students believe they are not a mathematics person, they are far less likely to engage in material where they face struggles, and thus they miss out on valuable learning. A review of the literature has show that students have been able to shift their mindset from fixed to growth through a series of interventions. I used a unit in Geometry to see how a growth mindset intervention would affect the mindset of …

Advancing Peptide-Based Vaccines Against Candida: A Comparative Perspective On Liposomal And Synthetic Formulations, Hong Xin Oct 2025

Advancing Peptide-Based Vaccines Against Candida: A Comparative Perspective On Liposomal And Synthetic Formulations, Hong Xin

School of Graduate Studies Faculty Publications

The growing threat of multidrug-resistant fungal pathogens, especially Candida auris, has underscored the need for effective antifungal vaccines. This commentary highlights recent advances in peptide-based vaccination using the SNAP (Spontaneous Nanoliposome Antigen Presentation) platform, focusing on the FM-SNAP vaccine, a bivalent liposomal formulation targeting the surface-expressed peptides fructose bisphosphate aldolase (Fba) and methionine synthase (Met6). Compared to earlier constructs such as MP12, FM-SNAP achieves superior immunogenicity and long-lasting protection at lower antigen doses. It elicits balanced Th1/Th2 cytokine responses and demonstrates durable efficacy in both immunocompetent and complement-deficient mouse models. The platform's compatibility with clinically approved adjuvants (MPLA and QS-21), …
