Pathlength, Altitude And Angle Of Incidence Dependence Of Remote Water Raman Scattering, Whitney E. Schuler, Paige K. Williams, Zechariah B. Kitzhaber, Caitlyn M. English, Tammi L. Richardson, Nikos Vitzilaios, Michael L. Myrick

Faculty Publications

A small remote Raman sensor was used to measure the Raman scattering signal from clear, still water as a function of water depth (12 cm and 396 cm depth), sensor distance above the water surface (20–300 cm), and angle of incidence (0–80°) to the normal of the water surface. Under thick- and thin-sample conditions, the signal depends on either the inverse, or the inverse square, of sensor distance from the water surface, respectively. A model is derived that fits data for different sensor distances, water depths, and angles of incidence. Fits to the measured data are consistent with the known …

Generation And Detection Of Photo-Thermal And Photo-Acoustic Waves In Solids For Advanced Near-Field Ir Imaging, Yide Zhang Oct 2025

Generation And Detection Of Photo-Thermal And Photo-Acoustic Waves In Solids For Advanced Near-Field Ir Imaging, Yide Zhang

Theses

Atomic force microscopy-infrared (AFM-IR) spectroscopy has become an essential tool for nanoscale chemical imaging, offering spatial resolution beyond the diffraction limit of conventional infrared spectroscopy. A typical AFM-IR setup directs a pulsed IR laser onto the sample, precisely at the tip of an AFM cantilever, detecting local absorption indirectly as photothermal expansion via the tip. This combination of AFM’s high spatial resolution and infrared spectroscopy’s chemical specificity enables detailed studies of a wide range of materials, from polymers and biological tissues to nanomaterials. However, the factors influencing AFM-IR signal generation and spatial resolution-especially in complex and inhomogeneous samples-remain challenging to …

This study seeks to understand work-integrated learning (WIL) at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level in Ireland through an exploration of the opinions and experiences of the three primary stakeholders to WIL, students, academic supervisors, and potential host organisations or employers. The research utilises the experiences and opinions of the key stakeholders in WIL and centres the student voice. Empirical evidence is used to challenge the assumption that WIL is a wholly positive inclusion and, instead, consider both its benefits and drawbacks. The study takes a pragmatic approach and considers how WIL at the PhD level can be optimised to …

Addressing Training Challenges Of Generative Adversarial Networks For Biomedical Image Synthesis, Muhammad Muneeb Saad Oct 2025

Addressing Training Challenges Of Generative Adversarial Networks For Biomedical Image Synthesis, Muhammad Muneeb Saad

Theses

Artificial intelligence (AI) plays a pivotal role in computer-aided diagnosis. In image-based diagnosis, AI systems rely on biomedical images containing sensitive disease-oriented information. AI systems utilize machine learning models to automate this diagnosis. Machine learning models such as deep neural networks require large training datasets to enhance the diagnostic precision of these models. Models can underperform when they are trained on imbalanced datasets. Imbalance in datasets refers to the skewed numbers of images per image class. There is a need to enhance the training of these models via data augmentation. In the context of biomedical imagery, where acquiring large, balanced …

Physics

We present optical integral-field spectroscopic data of ten nearby (0.02 ≤ z ≤ 0.05) Seyfert 1 galaxies taken with the Keck Cosmic Web Imager. We map the spatially resolved kinematics of the [O iii] gas and stars, and investigate the alignments between their global kinematic position angles (PAs). Large-scale gas motions are primarily dominated by rotation and are kinematically aligned with the stars (ΔPA ≤ 30°). However, eight galaxies exhibit nonrotational kinematic signatures (e.g., kinematic twists, possible outflows) in their ionized gas velocity fields near the nucleus. We compare aperture-wide measurements of the gas and stellar velocity dispersions (σ …

Assessing Spatial Variability In Observed Infectious Disease Spread In A Prospective Time-Space Series, Chih-Chieh Wu, Chien-Hsiun Chen, Shann-Rong Wang, Sanjay Shete Oct 2025

Assessing Spatial Variability In Observed Infectious Disease Spread In A Prospective Time-Space Series, Chih-Chieh Wu, Chien-Hsiun Chen, Shann-Rong Wang, Sanjay Shete

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Most of the growing prospective analytic methods in space-time disease surveillance and intended functions of disease surveillance systems focus on earlier detection of disease outbreaks, disease clusters, or increased incidence. The spread of the virus such as SARS-CoV-2 has not been spatially and temporally uniform in an outbreak. With the identification of an infectious disease outbreak, recognizing and evaluating anomalies (excess and decline) of disease incidence spread at the time of occurrence during the course of an outbreak is a logical next step. We propose and formulate a hypergeometric probability model that investigates anomalies of infectious disease incidence spread at …

“A Place Of Whites”: The History Of Brazilian Art, Rachel Cecília De Oliveira Oct 2025

“A Place Of Whites”: The History Of Brazilian Art, Rachel Cecília De Oliveira

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

This article examines the racial foundations of art system in Brazil, focusing on how whiteness has shaped aesthetics and art history. Drawing on anthropological analysis, it explores two key dimensions: the spatial and symbolic “place of whiteness” and the mechanisms of cultural and institutional racism. Through these categories, the paper investigates how the histories of non-Western peoples and the artistic production of racialized artists have been systematically marginalized. By revealing their near-total absence from canonical narratives, the article highlights the need for an anti-racist rethinking of Brazilian art history.
