Effects Of Yttrium And Barium Trace Impurities On The Dielectric Properties Of Srtio3 (111) Single Crystals At Cryogenic Temperatures, Hung Trinh, Alan Devoe, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Commercially available single crystals of (111) SrTiO3 were found to contain impurities of varying amounts that strongly affected their dielectric performance at cryogenic temperatures. Three crystals with total impurities of 111, 126, and 625 ppm, primarily of barium and yttrium, were analyzed. Relative permittivity (εr) and loss tangent were investigated with high resolution as a function of temperature (4 K to 100 K), DC voltage (0 V/cm to 800 V/cm), and frequency (100 Hz to 1 MHz). An impurity level as low as ≈500 ppm barium resulted in an increase of the maximum permittivity (εm) to approximately 50,000 at …

Youths from high-risk settings are often labeled based on their behavior, which leads to cycles of negative stigmatization and punitive interventions. Traditional behavioristic approaches used in schools, courts, and therapy have shown limited success in fostering long-term positive change. The SPARK mentoring program offers an innovative approach by following the principles from Martin Buber's “I and Thou” philosophy to view the youths with a humanistic and spiritual model. The SPARK program is a 10-week peer-mentorship program that connects youth on probation with college students who aspire to be educators. The SPARK program aims to ignite the spirit of hope, healing, …

A School’S Guide To Tackling Bullying With The B-Pat Framework, Eric Landers, Juliann Sergi Mcbrayer
National Youth Advocacy & Resilience Journal
Bullying is one of the most prevalent forms of victimization in schools, affecting nearly one in five students and contributing to academic decline, absenteeism, and mental health concerns. The Bullying Problem Analysis Triangle (B-PAT) provides a schoolwide framework to proactively address bullying by examining three core components: the aggressor, the target, and the opportunity. When one of these elements is disrupted, the bullying dynamic weakens. B-PAT also emphasizes empowering support staff as place managers, protecting targets through effective school climate and education, and redirecting aggressors toward prosocial leadership. Using data, schools can analyze patterns and adapt policies. Through training, strategic …

School closures and suspension of non-essential economic activities are highly effective respiratory-pandemic mitigation strategies because they effectively interrupt disease transmission. However, they come with high societal costs. Most of these costs are borne by workers who lose their income, especially those who are not supported by welfare benefits, and students whose future income depends on their education. In countries where many households live close to the poverty line, closures should be designed to minimize impacts on the most vulnerable. The objective of this study is to learn and compare policy responses that minimize the number of people that fall below …

Communication with nature has a positive effect on human health and well-being in different civilizations all time. But technological development caused the production of purely functional buildings that are far from communicating with nature, although some buildings contain gardens to achieve communication with nature, their elements are poor. Therefore, healing gardens are considered one of the main elements to raise the efficiency of the functional performance of the health building because they contain the resting places and healing departments. Therefore, this study focuses on determining the functional criteria for the elements of the garden that must be considered when designing …

Background: Following SARS-CoV-2 infection, approximately 10%–35% of patients with COVID-19 experience long COVID (LC), in which debilitating symptoms persist for at least 3 months. Elucidating the biologic underpinnings of LC could identify therapeutic opportunities.
Methods: We utilized machine learning methods on biologic analytes provided over 12 months after hospital discharge from more than 500 patients with COVID-19 in the IMPACC cohort to identify a multiomics “recovery factor,” trained on patient-reported physical function survey scores. Immune profiling data included PBMC transcriptomics, serum O-link and plasma proteomics, plasma metabolomics, and blood mass cytometry by time of flight (CyTOF) protein levels. Recovery factor …

Faculty and Staff Publications & Presentations
The ability to use conversion factors, calculate error, and evaluate the quality of data quantitatively is essential for student success in science fields. Specifically, within biological oceanography, the use of Redfield Ratios to determine nutrient limitation is a base concept. In this Excel-based lesson students reproduce a figure and analysis from a published scientific article detailing a phytoplankton bioassay experiment. As part of the lesson students calculate and propagate error and use Redfield Ratios to determine nutrient limitation. Conflicting quantitative results force students to evaluate the limitations of the experiment and justify their conclusions. Reproducing the results of the published …

Background: Opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) is a multimodal strategy to avoid intraoperative opioids and minimize associated complications, though evidence remains variable.
Methods: A systematic search of PubMed and Google Scholar (2010–2025), supplemented by AI tools (Google Gemini) for earlier publications, summarized eligible studies (RCTs, cohorts, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses) comparing OFA to opioid-based anesthesia (OBA). Data were summarized following PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
Results: Across 23 randomized controlled trials and one cohort study, OFA consistently reduced PONV, while demonstrating analgesia and recovery outcomes comparable to OBA. Hemodynamic stability was variable, with dexmedetomidine-based OFA regimens sometimes associated with increased bradycardia and hypotension. PACU stay …

When functioning correctly, the U.S. social safety net ensures that everyone can reach a basic standard of living, regardless of economic circumstances, and provides financial support to help families who have fallen on hard times due to job losses or other adverse life events. However, the programs often have complex rules around eligibility, documentation requirements, and compliance. Those features and negative experiences with program staff impose psychological costs—collectively referred to as administrative burdens—that can make enrolling and staying in the programs difficult for many families. Drawing upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility Survey of a nationally …
Poo Manager: Co-Designing A Serious Computer Game To Improve Constipation Management Awareness In Carers Of People With Intellectual Disabilities, Rohit Shankar
Peninsula Medical School
Approximately 2% of the population are people with intellectual disability (PwID). PwID are prone to multimorbidity, polypharmacy and premature mortality. Constipation is a prevalent and life-threatening issue for PwID fostered by iatrogenic harm, ignorance and stigma in family, and health and care settings. Despite its clinical significance, educational tools targeting caregivers’ knowledge of constipation prevention and management in PwID are scarce. Serious games (SGs) offer a novel and engaging platform to educate carers and reduce health stigma. Poo manager was collaboratively designed by a team of clinicians, academics, game developers and people with lived experience. The game involves navigating a …

Understanding how sharks respond to catch and release (C&R) recreational fisheries is an important requirement for effective management. Post-release survival and recovery in recreational fisheries can be species- and setting-dependent. Nevertheless, no study on sharks has been conducted in European recreational fisheries, despite their popularity as target. This study presents the first example of biologging to assess C&R effects on blue sharks (Prionace glauca), porbeagle sharks (Lamna nasus) and tope sharks (Galeorhinus galeus) in the UK. Pop-up satellite archival tags (n = 23 blue shark, 20 porbeagle shark, 26 tope shark) revealed high (94.7–96.2%) survival rates in all three species, …

In this work, we propose novel van der Waals heterostructures composed of Xenes, transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), phosphor ene, and transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTCs), which are separated by insulating hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) layers. We theoreti cally investigate the behavior of Rydberg indirect excitons in Xenes/hBN/TMDC, Xenes/hBN/phosphorene and Xenes/hBN/TMTC heterostructures subjected to parallel external electric and magnetic fields that are oriented perpendicular to the layers. By incorporating both isotropic and anisotropic materials, we demonstrate that excitonic properties can be effectively tuned through the external field strengths and the heterostructure design. Our results show that the exciton reduced mass and the …

Mutations that initiate acute myeloid leukemia (AML) can cause clonal expansion without transformation (clonal hematopoiesis). Cooperating mutations, usually in signaling genes, are needed to cause overt disease, but these may require a specific fitness state to be tolerated. Here, we show that nearly all AMLs arising in a mouse model expressing 2 common AML-initiating mutations (Dnmt3aR878H and Npm1cA) acquired a single copy amplification of chromosome 7 (chr7), followed by activating mutations in signaling genes. We show that overexpression of a single gene on chr7 (Gab2, which coordinates signaling pathways) was tolerated in the presence of the Npm1cA mutation, could accelerate …

A Clinical Practice Guideline For The Management Of Pregnancy Alloimmunized To Red Blood Cell Antigens, Kenneth J Moise, Jay Malone, Et Al.
2020-Current year OA Pubs
IMPORTANCE: Red blood cell alloimmunization is typically associated with the transplacental transfer of incompatible fetal red blood cells into maternal circulation. Subsequent pregnancies can be affected by fetal anemia, hydrops fetalis, and perinatal death. Most cases of Rhesus D (RhD) alloimmunization due to pregnancy can be prevented by the proper administration of Rhesus immune globulin. However, an emerging practice of using low-titer, O, RhD-positive whole blood (LTOWB) in cases of life-threatening hemorrhage has the potential to increase the exposure of the female population to a new source of incompatible red blood cells.
OBJECTIVE: To establish recommendations for the management of …

Cantu syndrome (CS) is a rare disease caused by gain-of-function (GOF) mutations of Kir6.1 or SUR2 subunits of ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels. CS patients with SUR2 and Kir6.1 variants display a similar constellation of symptoms, including muscle weakness and fatigue. The effects of CS mutations on skeletal muscle KATP channels, and any consequent direct effects on contractility, are currently unclear. Here, we used two knock-in mouse models of CS, respectively, carrying GOF mutations Kir6.1[V65M] or SUR2[A478V], to assess KATP channel properties and contractility in isolated fast-twitch extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and slow-twitch soleus (SOL) muscles. Electrophysiological recordings in isolated myofibers …

Pip2-Driven Cytoplasmic Domain Motions Are Coupled To Kir2 Channel Gating, Eva-Maria Zangerl-Plessl, Anna Stary-Weinzinger, Colin G Nichols, Sun-Joo Lee
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Inwardly rectifying potassium (Kir) channel activity is important in the control of membrane potentials in both excitable and non-excitable cells and is regulated through various ligands, including specific membrane lipids. Phosphatidyl-4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) is required for activity of all Kir channels, binding to the cytoplasmic domain in a compact conformation tightly tethered to the transmembrane domain. Most Kir2 channel structures determined in complex with PIP2 molecules are nevertheless in a closed state, requiring additional conformational changes for channel opening. We have carried out full atomistic MD simulations, which indicate PIP2-dependent conformational changes that are coupled to opening and closing of the …

2020-Current year OA Pubs
BACKGROUND: Nigeria is experiencing a growing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases, particularly hypertension and cardiovascular disease, largely driven by high sodium intake and poor diet quality. Unhealthy dietary patterns characterized by excessive sodium, sugars, and unhealthy fats, and low intake of essential nutrients contribute to approximately 31% of global deaths annually. However, there is limited data on the sodium content and nutritional quality of foods in Nigerian markets. This study assessed and compared the availability, healthiness, and sodium content of packaged and unpackaged foods in Nigerian markets.
METHODS: From August 2022 to December 2022, we collected and compared nutrition data …

Exploring Di College Coaches’ Perceptions Of Holistic Coaching And The Factors Impacting Their Ability To Succeed In The Current College Sports Landscape, Deborah V. Hogan Phd
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
In the highly competitive Division I (DI) college sports system, coaches are expected to produce winning programs while developing their college athletes holistically. Recent changes in NCAA policies complicate the coach-athlete relationship, hindering coaches' ability to serve as effective holistic leaders. This study uses grounded theory to understand how DI coaches in high-profile sports perceive their roles as holistic leaders and manage external challenges to provide holistic college athlete experiences. Semi-structured interviews with 12 football and women’s basketball coaches revealed five main themes: 1) coaches are educators, 2) strategies for holistic coaching, 3) supporting Black college athletes, 4) college sports …

Ncaa Division I Senior Athletic Administrators' Perceptions Of And Experiences With Mental Performance Consultants And Their Services: A Qualitative Investigation, Morgan R. Eckenrod, Rebecca Zakrajsek, Johannes Raabe
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
At the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) level, senior athletic administrators (SAAs) play a critical role in hiring Mental Performance Consultants (MPCs). Researchers found that NCAA DI administrators generally believe MPCs are beneficial in helping student-athletes manage competition pressures and improve performance, the number of full-time MPCs in NCAA DI athletic departments is still limited. In this study, eleven NCAA DI SAAs with at least one full-time MPC in their athletic department that solely delivered mental performance services were interviewed about their perceptions of and experiences with MPCs and their services. Using reflexive thematic analysis procedures, three …

Investigating The Glass Cliff Phenomenon In Ncaa Division I Women’S Basketball, Nicholas Swim, Adam R Cocco, Meg Hancock, Nick Kopka
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
In 2022-2023, across all Division I women's college sports teams, women only held 42% of all head coaching positions. Women's college basketball represents one of the outlier sports, as almost 70% of their head coaches for NCAA Division I women's basketball teams were women. While women head coaches are well represented in women's college basketball, Gerretsen et al. (2023) suggest inconsistencies exist in past experience, tenure length, and gender perceptions in women's college basketball hiring practices. This study further aimed to investigate these inconsistencies utilizing role congruity theory and the glass cliff phenomenon. To investigate, the researchers collected data on …

Athletic administrators often assume a distinct stakeholder role that has the most immediate and frequent impact on college athletes’ well-being and retention. The implementation of name, image, and likeness (NIL) represents a historic transformation in college athletics. Utilizing a sport development framework, particularly the retention stage, to examine elite athlete development, how athletic administrators socially support college athletes in the new context of NIL and its impact on administrators’ work experiences were empirically assessed. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 athletic administrators at nine universities. The themes of Implementation Challenges, Lack of Uniformity, Holistic Benefits to Athlete Well-Being, and Mostly …

This study examines job movements entering, exiting, and between NCAA compliance-related positions using a sample of 100 LinkedIn profiles. The analysis of the 441 job movements establishes job and organizational tenure figures and patterns in how people matriculate through certain positions. Theory related to career boundaries is used to interpret the job movements and draw conclusions about patterns related to educational backgrounds (e.g., master’s and law degrees), the role of internships and graduate assistantships, and more. The findings provide new insight on career dynamics in NCAA compliance and underscore the need to focus on studying subsectors in college sport to …

Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
While diversity, inclusion, and leadership shape individual behaviors and organizational culture, historically they have been researched as independent theoretical streams. Examining these lines has been fruitful to advance our understanding of diversity, inclusion, and leadership separately; however, we lack an understanding of how leaders understand and engage in inclusive leadership. Thus, this study explores how college sport leaders make sense of and enact inclusive leadership. Through 16 semi-structured interviews with senior-level athletic administrators we constructed four themes: fostering employees’ uniqueness, strengthening team belongingness, learning centered development, and actioning values-based care. This work both bolsters and extends Korkmaz and colleagues’ (2022) …

House Rules: Athlete, Coach, And Staff Perspectives On The Shifting Ncaa Landscape, Daniel Springer
Journal of Issues in Intercollegiate Athletics
The House settlement is an inflection point in NCAA Division I athletics, ushering in a new model of institutional revenue sharing, roster regulation, and athlete compensation. While legal and financial analyses dominate public discourse, less is known about how these shifts are understood by those working and competing within athletic departments. This study draws on narrative analysis of interviews with 11 athletes, coaches, and staff across five anonymized Power 4 institutions to examine how the House settlement is being interpreted as it takes effect. Three narrative foci emerged: 1) financial prioritization and resource allocation, 2) shifting culture, relationships, and meaning, …

International college athletes migrating to the United States for athletic competition encounter unique challenges such as language barriers, cultural adjustment, and familial detachment. These obstacles can hinder international college athletes’ transition compared to those of domestic athletes. While supportive programming and personnel have been illustrated to ease the transition and foster acculturation among international college athletes, the impact of the geographic location of an institution may impact the acculturation process for international college athletes. Given the importance of acculturation to athletic and academic success, this study examined how cultural diversity within communities hosting NCAA member institutions affects international college athletes’ …
