This study aims to identify developmental directions for Korean language education in the Philippines by analyzing the educational realities and needs of Filipino Korean language teachers working locally. Although Korean language education has been expanding in schools, universities, and various institutions, the system lacks institutional foundations and research on teachers. To address this, an online survey was conducted with 21 teachers across the Philippines, and 19 valid responses were analyzed. The respondents were employed in universities, King Sejong Institutes, vocational training centers, religious institutions, and private language schools. Many teachers had limited Korean proficiency, insufficient academic background or training experience, …

Caveolin (CAV) 1 and 2 are integral membrane proteins that constitute major components of small membrane pouches termed caveolae. While several functions have been described in other tissues, the roles of CAV1 and CAV2 in the ocular surface have remained unknown. In the current study, we investigated the expression and function of CAV1 and CAV2 in the human cornea. We found CAV1 and CAV2 to be preferentially expressed by proliferative Basal Cell Adhesion Molecule (BCAM)-positive progenitor cells along the entire limbal and corneal basal epithelial layer. Functional gene knockdown studies reveal that BCAM, BCAM co-expressed Laminin α5 (LAMA5) and Laminin …

Exercise is a therapeutic approach in cancer treatment, providing several benefits. Moreover, exercise is associated with a reduced risk for developing a range of cancers and for their recurrence, as well as with improving survival, even though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Preclinical and clinical evidence shows that the acute effects of a single exercise session can suppress the growth of various cancer cell lines in vitro. This suppression is potentially due to altered concentrations of hormones (e.g., insulin) and cytokines (e.g., tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 6) after exercise. These factors, known to be involved in tumorigenesis, may …

The microgrid (MG) faces significant security issues due to the two-way power and information flow. Integrating an Energy Management System (EMS) to balance energy supply and demand in Malaysian microgrids, this study designs a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) that considers intermittent renewable sources and fluctuating demand patterns. FLC offers a flexible solution to energy scheduling effectively assessed by MATLAB/Simulink simulations. The microgrid consists of PV, battery, grid, and load. A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controller helps to extract the maximum PV output and manages the power storage by providing or absorbing excess power. System analysis is performed by observing …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Purpose: There is a consistent link between perfectionism and compulsive exercise, and both are implicated in the maintenance of eating disorders, however no meta-analysis to date has quantified this relationship. We hypothesised that there would be significant, small-moderate pooled correlations between perfectionism dimensions and compulsive exercise. Methods: Published, peer-reviewed articles with standardised measures of perfectionism and the Compulsive Exercise Test were included. There were 7 studies included (N = 3117 participants, M age = 21.78 years, 49% female). Results: Total perfectionism (r = 0.37), perfectionistic strivings (r = 0.33), and perfectionistic concerns (r = 0.32) had significant pooled positive associations …
More Than Peyote: Trauma, Healing, And The Politics Of Indigenous Cultural Survival In The Age Of Psychedelic Colonialism, Christine Diindiisi Mccleave
More Than Peyote: Trauma, Healing, And The Politics Of Indigenous Cultural Survival In The Age Of Psychedelic Colonialism, Christine Diindiisi Mccleave
Indigenous Studies
This dissertation examines the intersection of peyote religion, historical trauma, and the emergent psychedelic movement through a critical Indigenous lens. Centering peyote as both a sacred medicine and a symbolic flashpoint, the study highlights how contemporary psychedelic policy, practice, and commercialization perpetuate settler-colonial paradigms and threaten Indigenous cultural survival. While mainstream narratives frame psychedelics as tools for healing, this research emphasizes how such framing often obscures deeper histories of dispossession, cultural appropriation, and epistemic violence. Using a mixed-methods approach, including 50 anonymous survey responses, 13 qualitative interviews, and a 6-person focus group, this study amplifies the voices of tribal citizens …

Renewable energy sources (RES) are essential for meeting the rising global electricity demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from conventional generation. As traditional systems approach capacity saturation, the integration of RES into power grids becomes increasingly vital. However, the intermittent and variable nature of RES introduces significant technical, economic, and operational challenges. This review focuses on the optimal planning and integration of distributed generation in unbalanced distribution systems, which more accurately reflect real-world power network conditions. Emphasis is placed on siting and sizing strategies aimed at enhancing voltage stability, minimizing power losses, and reducing system costs and emissions. The review …

Relationship Between Cytomegalovirus Antibody Levels And Cognitive Performance Is Dependent On Age And Genetic Risk, Michael Vacher, Silvia Lee, Patricia Price, Phuongnhi Ha, Shelley Waters, Simon M. Laws
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Human cytomegalovirus (CMV) is endemic worldwide. It is often acquired in childhood and persists throughout adult life. CMV is linked with several diseases of aging, but associations with cognitive performance are not consistent. Here we address whether this may reflect a dependence on putative genetic determinants, Apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 and Tumour Necrosis Factor (TNF), and/or the age of the subjects tested. CMV-reactive antibodies were quantitated in 419 individuals aged 71.7 [53.2—89.1] years, drawn from the Australian Imaging, Biomarker & Lifestyle (AIBL) study. Cognitive composite scores, covering five domains, a global score of cognitive performance, brain amyloid-β (Aβ) burden and …

Sediment Burial Negatively Impacts The Growth Of Seagrass Posidonia Sinuosa, Chanelle Webster, Nicole Said, Natasha Dunham, Simone Strydom, Kathryn Mcmahon
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Burial disturbances affect foundation plant species in marine ecosystems. Deposition of dredge spoil can bury seagrass meadows yet we have limited threshold information to predict the trajectory of impact from burial or possible recovery. To investigate the response to burial by dredge spoil, established seagrass ramets of Posidonia sinuosa were collected from a population in Western Australia and exposed to cutter suction dredge spoil sediment. Plant responses were measured during a burial phase after 2, 4 and 8 weeks to assess the influence of duration to burial depths (0, 1, 4, 8 and 16 cm). Sediments were then removed, and …

Design Of A Novel Robust Adaptive Fractional-Order Model Predictive Controller For Boost Converter Using Grey Wolf Optimization Algorithm, Chao Peng, Seyyed Morteza [email protected] Ghamari, Hasan Mollaee, Omid Rezaei
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Boost converters play a crucial role in power electronics but present control challenges due to their non-minimum phase behavior and nonlinear dynamics at high switching frequencies. To address these issues, this work proposes a Fractional-order adaptive Model Predictive Control (FO-MPC) framework incorporating Exponential Regressive Least Squares (ERLS) for system identification. Traditional MPC frameworks often rely on accurate mathematical models, which are difficult to obtain in real-world scenarios. This adaptive modelling approach based on ERLS identification method eliminates the need for precise system models, improving robustness and adaptability under parameter variations. Additionally, a FO derivative term enhances damping, stability, and noise …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT) improves upper limb (UL) function after stroke. Despite extensive evidence supporting its efficacy and multiple clinical practice guidelines recommending its provision, very few eligible stroke survivors receive mCIMT internationally. A multi-modal behaviour change intervention, guided by the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and Behaviour Change Wheel, was implemented across a large early-supported discharge (ESD) rehabilitation service in Perth, Australia, to increase delivery of mCIMT within existing resources. As part of this iterative implementation process, qualitative data from stroke survivors, carers, clinicians and managers informed program adaptations to support sustained mCIMT delivery. This study aimed to …

Biopolymer-Based Membranes And Their Application In Per- And Polyfluorinated Substances Removal: Perspective Review, Roham Ghanbari, Ratish Permala, Stefan Iglauer, Masoumeh Zargar
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Over the past 2 decades, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have attracted considerable attention due to their widespread occurrence and adverse effects on both the environment and human health. PFAS possess strong carbon‑fluorine bonds that confer exceptional chemical stability and resistance to natural degradation; their fluorinated chains are highly hydrophobic and oleophobic, while their polar functional groups contribute to amphiphilic behavior and water solubility. Certain PFAS thus pose serious risks to living organisms, especially mammals. Membrane filtration is recognized as a particularly effective technique, achieving removal efficiencies greater than 99 % for long-chain-PFAS (including anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic PFAS molecules). …

Confinement-Dependent Transient Mi For The Hoek-Brown (H-B) Strength Criterion, Hao Li, Leo Pel, Zhenjiang You, David Smeulders
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
The growing global demand for mineral resources necessitates deeper excavation, where increasing in situ stresses pose significant geomechanical challenges. Consequently, an accurate strength assessment of deep-seated rock masses is crucial for ensuring the safety and reliability of underground excavations. The Hoek-Brown (H-B) strength criterion remains a widely applied rock strength criterion. However, its conventional form struggles to characterize the full nonlinear evolution of rock strength from pre-critical to critical conditions across varying confining stresses. To address this limitation, this study proposes a Confinement-dependent Transient mi Model (CTM) as an enhancement to the H-B criterion. By incorporating confinement-sensitive variations of mi, …

Background: Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is present in secondary granules of neutrophils and it is a relatively newly recognized marker of kidney diseases. The fibrinogen-to-albumin ratio (FAR) is a marker of inflammation but its diagnostic value has not been determined in sickle cell disease patients with kidney diseases. This study investigated the diagnostic roles of serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (sNGAL) and FAR for kidney diseases in steady-state adult sickle cell disease (SCD) patients. Methods: This study employed a prospective case-control design and recruited 104 SCD participants and 80 non-SCD patients. Participants’ information was thoroughly documented using a structured questionnaire and …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Microbial activity plays a significant role in subsurface hydrogen behavior, with implications for underground storage and natural hydrogen systems. This study examines how microbial processes influence the wettability and solid–liquid interfacial characteristics of key subsurface minerals, calcite, dolomite, quartz, and gypsum, in hydrogen-brine-rock systems under realistic subsurface conditions. Wettability directly affects hydrogen distribution, flow dynamics, and trapping, making it a critical factor for both storage and natural recovery applications. Experiments were conducted under high-pressure, high-temperature conditions, with SEM/EDS analysis used to characterize interfacial modifications and mineral surface changes across three scenarios: clean, organic acid-aged, and microbial-aged. Microbial aging consistently increased …

A Critical Review On Selecting Performance Evaluation Metrics For Supervised Machine Learning Models In Wastewater Quality Prediction, Hoda Khoshvaght, Ratish Ramyad Permala, Amir Razmjou, Mehdi Khiadani
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
While numerous machine learning (ML) models have been applied to wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) quality prediction tasks, significantly less attention has been paid to the selection and interpretation of performance evaluation metrics. Most studies rely on general-purpose regression metrics such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), and the Coefficient of Determination (R2). Although widely used, these metrics differ considerably in terms of interpretability, sensitivity to data anomalies, and suitability for dynamic, noisy environments like WWTPs. This review, based on a systematic literature analysis of 27 performance evaluation metrics, critically …

Bank Efficiency And Monetary Policy Transmission, Md Asad Iqbal Chowdhury, Md Harun Ur Rashid, Mohammad Shamsu Uddin
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
We offer new insights into how bank efficiency influences the transmission of monetary policy through the bank lending channel (BLC) in an emerging economy context. The study draws on a balanced panel of 29 banks listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), covering the period from 2006 to 2024. We first measure bank efficiency using the non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which captures both technical efficiency (TE) and scale efficiency (SE). Subsequently, we employ three regression techniques such as Ordinary Least Squares (OLS), Fixed Effects (FE), and the two-step Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) to examine the moderating effects of …

Cumulative Triglyceride-Glucose Index And Hypertension Risk: A Longitudinal Cohort Study, Zhaogui Wu, Dan Wu, Sichi Xu, Yan Borné, Yulong Lan, Shuohua Chen
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Background: Prior research has established a positive association between the single-measured triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and hypertension. Nevertheless, longitudinal studies addressing the enduring impact of TyG index on incident hypertension are lacking. This study sought to explore the association between cumulative TyG index (cum-TyG) and incident hypertension, especially obesity-related hypertension (ORHT). Methods: A total of 21,017 individuals [mean (SD) age: 48.5 ± 11.7 years, male (%): 14,544 (69.2)] without hypertension were recruited from the Kailuan Study. The cum-TyG was determined by multiplying the mean TyG index by the time intervals between successive visits. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to investigate …
