Gold nanorods (AuNRs) have received considerable attention for their distinctive optical properties and well-defined, low-polydispersity dimensions. These characteristics position them as promising candidates for diverse applications in imaging, sensing, and treating diseases. However, accurate characterization of AuNRs in their native solution state, which is crucial to many applications, presents many challenges─especially if AuNRs are coated with surface layers (e.g., surfactants or grafted polymers). When applied to AuNRs with functionalized surfaces, common techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small-angle scattering, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) can present limitations such as small sample sizes, the inability to detect light elements, a …

From Dred Scott To Barbara: Birthright Citizenship, Racial Exclusion, And The Enduring Promise Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Jenna A. Milbrodt Jan 2026

From Dred Scott To Barbara: Birthright Citizenship, Racial Exclusion, And The Enduring Promise Of The Fourteenth Amendment, Jenna A. Milbrodt

CMC Senior Theses

The Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause has guaranteed birthright citizenship to all children born in the United States for hundreds of years. Yet, President Trump’s January 20, 2025, executive order threatens to strip that right from children born to parents unlawfully in the country and temporary visitors. This order, if permitted to stand, would change the definition of US citizenship and render countless children stateless persons without citizenship rights. This paper examines whether birthright citizenship in the US, properly understood, extends to children of unlawful immigrants and temporary visitors. To answer this question, three time periods of change in citizenship rights …

Symbolic Reform Or Substantive Change? The Effect Of Body-Worn Camera Implementation On Lethal Use-Of-Force In Missouri, Sophia A. Tuncer Jan 2026

Symbolic Reform Or Substantive Change? The Effect Of Body-Worn Camera Implementation On Lethal Use-Of-Force In Missouri, Sophia A. Tuncer

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis investigates whether body-worn cameras reduce lethal use-of-force among police departments in Missouri. Aggregating data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics and Mapping Police Violence, I create a panel of 188 cities in Missouri, with and without body-worn camera adoption. The OLS and Poisson regression results show that body-worn cameras do not have a significant effect on lethal use-of-force in the short run, but that the technology does significantly lower lethal use-of-force in the medium run.

Ramadan Hardcore By Hicham Habchi E Mehdi Yassire, Sarah Nesti Willard

Books and Book Chapters

This article examines Ramadan Hardcore, a graphic novel by Hicham Habchi and Mehdi Yassire, through a visual and contextual analysis. It explores how the novel’s raw illustrative style reinforces its title and narrative, creating a powerful emotional impact while presenting an authentic, and at times deliberately exaggerated, representation of reality. Using visual semiotic analysis, the study demonstrates how the artwork reflects the authors’ lived experiences and contributes to the novel’s gritty, direct atmosphere. The article also discusses the controversy surrounding the graphic novel’s provocative title, noting that although it initially attracted considerable attention, interest quickly declined and copies have …

Associations Between Discrimination And First-Generation College Students’ Belonging And Academic Well-Being, Thomas P. Le, Nicola Forbes, Elizabeth B. Raposa Jan 2026

Associations Between Discrimination And First-Generation College Students’ Belonging And Academic Well-Being, Thomas P. Le, Nicola Forbes, Elizabeth B. Raposa

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

First-generation college students (FGCS) make up one third of the college student population but continue to face unfavorable academic outcomes. A powerful yet understudied factor that contributes to FGCS’ lower academic and graduation rates is campus discrimination. Importantly, discrimination undermines feelings of belonging on campus and belonging has been found to predict academic performance, motivation, and persistence to graduation. The current study examined whether on-campus discrimination influenced sense of belonging among 276 FGCS sampled during the first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic, and whether decreased sense of belonging, in turn, was associated with two forms of academic well-being (i.e., …

Emotions In Terrorism And Response To Terrorism: Humiliation, Hate, And Love, Clark Mccauley, Sophia Moskalenko Jan 2026

Emotions In Terrorism And Response To Terrorism: Humiliation, Hate, And Love, Clark Mccauley, Sophia Moskalenko

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

This chapter explores the underexamined role of emotions in terrorism and responses to terrorism, arguing that radicalization studies have disproportionately focused on cognitive factors such as ideology and narrative while neglecting the powerful influence of emotions. Brief review of existing research highlights how emotions play a central role in terrorist motivations and in target and bystander responses to terrorist attacks. Conceptual definitions of humiliation, hate, and love are introduced, positioning them as critical emotional experiences that drive both individual radicalization and large-scale political violence. A more systematic study of emotions in terrorism research is suggested for developing effective counterterrorism policies …

Twelve Mechanisms Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark Mccauley Jan 2026

Twelve Mechanisms Of Radicalization To Terrorism, Sophia Moskalenko, Clark Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

Radicalization refers to changes in beliefs, feelings, and actions toward increased support for one side of an intergroup conflict. The extreme of action radicalization is political violence and terrorism. Twelve psychological mechanisms driving participation in political violence are identified.  At the individual level, motivation to engage in political violence can be based on personal grievance, political grievance, “slippery slope” participation in illegal political activity, love for already-radicalized friends and relatives, and social disconnection (”unfreezing”) that opens an individual to new ideas and new comrades.  At the group level, participation in political violence can emerge from extremity shift of like-minded group …

It traces historical developments, innovative models, and psychosocial dimensions of mentoring, while presenting a case study from a northeastern R1 university library. A key contribution of this work is its focus on organizational readiness: the alignment of mentoring program design with institutional culture, faculty preparedness, and administrative capacity. The article emphasizes the importance of intentional matching, role clarity, and sustainability as essential elements for successful mentoring, and argues that mentoring should be viewed as …

The Manifestation Of Antihaitianismo In Abinader’S Dominican Political Atmosphere, Isabella Alcantara Jan 2026

The Manifestation Of Antihaitianismo In Abinader’S Dominican Political Atmosphere, Isabella Alcantara

FCRH Honors Program Theses

In the past decade, Haitian migration has become central to Dominican political discourse. This shift is particularly evident under President Luis Abinader’s administration, which has overseen a sharp increase in restrictive border enforcement and citizenship measures targeting Haitian migrants fleeing escalating humanitarian crises. While existing scholarship on Dominican nationalism highlights the historical role of antihaitianismo in shaping exclusionary state practices, less attention has been paid to how contemporary elite rhetoric reproduces these dynamics in more indirect, coded ways. Drawing on theories of symbolic politics and securitization, this study examines how state discourse constructs Haitian migrants within national narratives. It asks: …

The Long Life Of Illumination: How Medieval Manuscripts Shaped Modern Print Culture, Malena Sullivan Jan 2026

The Long Life Of Illumination: How Medieval Manuscripts Shaped Modern Print Culture, Malena Sullivan

FCRH Honors Program Theses

Design is everywhere in our lives, from product and book layouts to advertisements and the web. Design packages information into visually appealing formats which grab attention and relate an easily understood message. Through fonts, illustrations, patterns, and color, good design does more than just convey information. Rather, it is an art form in itself that has the power to stay within the viewer’s imagination through impactful visuals. The act of designing is a creative process, but also one that often borrows from the past. Before printing was widely adopted in Europe in the fifteenth century, books were written out and …

The Impact Of Trade Liberalisation On Human Rights To Freshwater For Domestic Uses In The Developing World: An Examination Of Nigeria., Dickson Esonarae

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

AbstractName: Dickson Efosa Esonarae.Title: The Impact of Trade Liberalisation on Human Rights to Freshwater for domestic uses in the Developing World: An Examination of Nigeria.Freshwater is a vital life-sustaining resource. Though considered basic in developed countries, it is often scarce and mostly of inadequate quality in the developing world (Global South), with the WHO and UNICEF Report estimating about 1.1 billion people globally lacking access. Consequently, several countries are determined to provide freshwater for their people but often hampered by financial constraints for the requisite infrastructure. Considering this limitation, the International Economic Institutions (IEIs) identified the private sector as the …
