Teaching Numeracy For Social Justice: Educational Equity, Esther Isabelle Wilder, Crystal C. Rodriguez, Caterina Shost, Eduardo Vianna, Frank Wang Jan 2026

Teaching Numeracy For Social Justice: Educational Equity, Esther Isabelle Wilder, Crystal C. Rodriguez, Caterina Shost, Eduardo Vianna, Frank Wang

Numeracy

The special collection, “Teaching Numeracy for Social Justice: Educational Equity,” focuses on how quantitative reasoning (QR) can function as a vehicle for equity, empowerment, and democratic participation. Building on a longstanding tradition that treats numeracy as inseparable from social justice, these contributions highlight how progressive pedagogies (e.g., active learning, authentic research, and equity-oriented assessment) have the potential to broaden access for students historically excluded from quantitative fields. The studies span a variety of conceptual frameworks, introductory and advanced quantitative instruction, and interdisciplinary applications, showcasing how inclusive QR practices can build confidence, agency, and real-world understanding. These articles demonstrate that when …

Quantitative Reasoning In Calculus Iii: Advancing Student Engagement, Confidence, And Aspirations At An Hsi, Tanvir Prince

Numeracy

This study examines the impact of integrating Quantitative Reasoning (QR) into a Calculus III course at a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) on student engagement, confidence, and aspirations. The course is offered at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx. It incorporated QR-focused projects on economic inequality, environmental pollution, and access to healthcare. These projects allowed students to apply advanced calculus concepts to real-world social issues. A pre- and post-survey design was employed to assess changes in students’ mathematical confidence, perceptions of relevance, and career and educational goals. Results showed statistically significant gains in confidence and in the belief that advanced math …

A Comparison Of First- And Continuing-Generation Students Completing A Project-Based Introductory Statistics Course, Susan A. Dumais, Naomi J. Spence, Lisa Dierker Jan 2026

A Comparison Of First- And Continuing-Generation Students Completing A Project-Based Introductory Statistics Course, Susan A. Dumais, Naomi J. Spence, Lisa Dierker

Numeracy

Traditional introductory statistics courses that focus on techniques are not engaging for many college students; this may be especially true for first-generation college students, who generally have more difficulty engaging in the college environment than continuing-generation students. We study first-generation college students’ experiences in a course-based undergraduate research experience called Passion-Driven Statistics. Passion-Driven Statistics is a multidisciplinary, project-based introductory statistics course where students develop their own research topics, analyze publicly available quantitative data, and focus on conceptual understanding of statistics rather than hand calculations. Using pre-course and post-course surveys from students taking Passion-Driven Statistics in colleges throughout the United States, …

The Roles Of Mathematics In Teaching For Social Justice: A Framework For The College Classroom, Vivian Lim, Daniel Libertz Jan 2026

The Roles Of Mathematics In Teaching For Social Justice: A Framework For The College Classroom, Vivian Lim, Daniel Libertz

Numeracy

In this paper, we present a framework for understanding the multiple roles that mathematics can serve in the classroom towards social justice goals, developed through an analysis of 36 social justice mathematics curricular modules in college settings. The framework is grounded in Patricia Hill Collins's matrix of domination and consists of seven themes that represent the different roles mathematics can play: measuring inequality, illuminating conditions resulting in inequality, understanding the mechanisms of phenomena, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions, generating and evaluating solutions, communication and action, and criticizing quantification. Our framework supports the perspective that mathematics can serve important and distinct roles …

A Case Study Of Faculty Composition And Workload In Sport Management Programs At Small-To-Medium-Sized Colleges And Universities, Joshua Greer, Nicholas Zoroya, Aimee T. Vlachos, Alan Ledford

The COSMA Journal

Sport management has transitioned from its origins in physical education to an established, business-oriented academic discipline, prompting new questions about how faculty composition and workload shape program delivery in resource-constrained contexts. This case study investigates faculty structures, instructional variety, and workload in sport management programs at small- to medium-sized U.S. colleges and universities, as defined by the Carnegie Size & Setting Classification. A mixed-methods survey of faculty (n = 61) was analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic content analysis. Quantitative results indicated that core courses are primarily taught by full-time faculty, with most programs relying on one to three full-time …

Ibn Malik’S Approach To Grammatical Evidence A Reading Of The Arguments Of Supporters And Opponents, Asst. Prof. Mousa Bin Nasser Al-Mousa Jan 2026

Ibn Malik’S Approach To Grammatical Evidence A Reading Of The Arguments Of Supporters And Opponents, Asst. Prof. Mousa Bin Nasser Al-Mousa

UB Journal for Humanities

his study examines, on one hand, the evidence advanced by those who accuse Ibn Mālik of fabricating grammatical citations (shawāhid), and, on the other, the evidence and rejoinders offered by those who hold him innocent of such fabrication. The researcher adopts an inductive method by tracing the arguments of both the affirmers and the deniers, analyzing them, and then evaluating them in an effort to reach a preponderant judgment on the question. The findings indicate the strength and cogency of the two principal proofs: solitary transmission (tafarrud) and omission of attribution (ighfāl al-nisba), as well as the inability of the …

It demonstrates how the concept of mujawara (settling near the Prophet’s Mosque), initially intended as a temporary stay, evolved into a multifaceted civilizational phenomenon. Indian Muslims played a significant role in stimulating the intellectual, economic, and social life of Medina. The study also highlights their contribution to building a web of …

Dialectical Techniques And Logical And Psychological Critiques In The Work Of Imam Al-Tufi: An Analytical Study Of 'Commentary On The Four Gospels And The Twelve Books' From A Jurisprudential Perspective, Dr. Reema Bint Ali Muhammad Al-Qahtani Jan 2026

Dialectical Techniques And Logical And Psychological Critiques In The Work Of Imam Al-Tufi: An Analytical Study Of 'Commentary On The Four Gospels And The Twelve Books' From A Jurisprudential Perspective, Dr. Reema Bint Ali Muhammad Al-Qahtani

UB Journal for Humanities

This study examines the dialectical methods and logical fallacies employed by Imam al-Ṭūfī in his refutation of the Christians through his work al-Taʿlīq ʿalā al-Anājīl al-Arbaʿa wa-al-Kutub al-Ithnay ʿAshar. The research seeks to identify the types of dialectical fallacies extracted by the Imam and to explain how he employed them in defending Islamic creed and refuting the claims of his opponents with a solid rational methodology, rendering his work worthy of scholarly attention from both uṣūlī (legal-theoretical) and dialectical perspectives. The study adopts an inductive method first, followed by deductive and analytical approaches. Among its key findings is that Imam …

Atmospheric Waves Experiment (Awe) Thermal Control System: Review Of On-Orbit Performance, Matthew I. Ralphs, Mike Holt Jan 2026

Atmospheric Waves Experiment (Awe) Thermal Control System: Review Of On-Orbit Performance, Matthew I. Ralphs, Mike Holt

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

This paper reviews the Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) detector thermal control system’s (TCS) performance for over two years of operation on the Internation Space Station (ISS). The TCS employs active thermal control for the InGaAs detectors with thermoelectric coolers (TEC). Each of the four detectors are controlled by a dedicated TEC at a nominal setpoint of -30°C, with heat transported away via low-mass, high-conductance pyrolytic graphite sheet (PGS) thermal straps into a nickel-plated copper conductor bar. A bi-directional radiator with Silver Teflon ensures an unobstructed view that can radiate the heat away to space. Titanium isolators decouple the detectors from …

A Suite Of Thermal Switches For Surviving Extreme Thermal Environments In Space, Matthew I. Ralphs, Matt Jensen, Alexis Eames, Matt Sinfield

Space Dynamics Laboratory Publications

Thermal switches are a key enabling technology for spacecraft operating in extreme thermal environments. Whether surviving the lunar night, managing intermittent high-power loads from deep space communication systems, or dealing with other extreme thermal environments, high-performance thermal switches allow critical missions to operate beyond conventional thermal design limits. This paper presents the development, testing, and performance of a suite of passive thermal switches designed for both spacecraft- and subsystem-level thermal control. The suite includes: (1) traditional in-line switch placed between sensitive components and radiators; (2) compact designs suitable for integration into standard bolted joint interfaces to modulate the conductance between …
