While the encoder–decoder structure is widely used in the recent neural construction methods for learning to solve vehicle routing problems (VRPs), they are less effective in searching solutions due to deterministic feature embeddings and deterministic probability distributions. In this article, we propose the feature embedding refiner (FER) with a novel and generic encoder–refiner–decoder structure to boost the existing encoder–decoder structured deep models. It is model-agnostic that the encoder and the decoder can be from any pretrained neural construction method. Regarding the introduced refiner network, we design its architecture by combining the standard gated recurrent units (GRU) cell with two new …

A Diversity-Enhanced Memetic Algorithm For Solving Electric Vehicle Routing Problems With Time Windows And Mixed Backhauls, Jianhua Xiao, Jingguo Du, Zhiguang Cao, Xingyi Zhang, Yunyun Niu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The electric vehicle routing problem (EVRP) has been studied increasingly because of environmental concerns. However, existing studies on the EVRP mainly focus on time windows and sole linehaul customers, which might not be practical as backhaul customers are also ubiquitous in reality. In this study, we investigate an EVRP with time windows and mixed backhauls (EVRPTWMB), where both linehaul and backhaul customers exist and can be served in any order. To address this challenging problem, we propose a diversity-enhanced memetic algorithm (DEMA) that integrates three types of novel operators, including genetic operators based on adaptive selection mechanism, a selection operator …

Mobile crowdsensing (MCS) systems typically struggle to address the challenge of data aggregation, incentive design, and privacy protection, simultaneously. However, existing solutions usually focus on one or, at most, two of these issues. To this end, this paper presents CROWD FA, a novel paradigm for privacy-preserving MCS through federated analytics (FA), which aims to achieve a well-rounded solution encompassing data aggregation, incentive design, and privacy protection. Specifically, inspired by FA, CROWD FA initiates an MCS computing paradigm that enables data aggregation and incentive design. Participants can perform aggregation operations on their local data, facilitated by CROWD FA, which supports various …

In recent years, AI research has showcased tremendous potential to impact positively humanity and society. Although AI frequently outperforms humans in tasks related to classification and pattern recognition, it continues to face challenges when dealing with complex tasks such as intuitive decision-making, sense disambiguation, sarcasm detection, and narrative understanding, as these require advanced kinds of reasoning, e.g., commonsense reasoning and causal reasoning, which have not been emulated satisfactorily yet. To address these shortcomings, we propose seven pillars that we believe represent the key hallmark features for the future of AI, namely: Multidisciplinarity, Task Decomposition, Parallel Analogy, Symbol Grounding, Similarity Measure, …

Machine learning has achieved a great success in the field of Android malware detection. In order to avoid being caught by these ML-based Android malware detection, malware authors are inclined to initiate adversarial sample attacks by tampering with mobile applications. Although machine learning has high capability, it lacks robustness against adversarial attacks. Currently, many of the adversarial attacking tools not only inject dead code into target applications, which can never be executed, but also require the injection of many benign features into a malicious APK. This can be easily noticeable by program analysis techniques. In this paper, we propose SeqAdver, …
Coordinating Multi-Party Vehicle Routing With Location Congestion Via Iterative Best Response, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau
Coordinating Multi-Party Vehicle Routing With Location Congestion Via Iterative Best Response, Waldy Joe, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
This work is motivated by a real-world problem of coordinating B2B pickup-delivery operations to shopping malls involving multiple non-collaborative logistics service providers (LSPs) in a congested city where space is scarce. This problem can be categorized as a vehicle routing problem with pickup and delivery, time windows and location congestion with multiple LSPs (or ML-VRPLC in short), and we propose a scalable, decentralized, coordinated planning approach via iterative best response. We formulate the problem as a strategic game where each LSP is a self-interested agent but is willing to participate in a coordinated planning as long as there are sufficient …

Are Social Media Users Blindly Following Influencers’ Recommendations On Investing?, Zuliani Dalimunthe, Ananda Chairunnisa, Rachmadi Agus Triono
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
Previous studies show that general information shared by an influencer through social media has been received without sufficient validity testing. However, hardly any study has evaluated whether a stock recommendation by a social media influencer will also be followed blindly. This study evaluates the impact of the credibility of stock influencers on investors’ intention to invest in recommended stocks and whether the relationship can be explained by the perception that the influencer has inside infor- mation or is solely due to fear of missing out (FoMO). This study uses primary data from investors in the Indonesian model market. We collected …

The Indonesian Capital Market Review
The development of Financial Technology (FinTech) in Islamic banks has not brought increasing us- ers. Therefore, it is necessary to determine which factors influence intention to use FinTech from the demand side or the customers’ side. For this study, we chose mobile banking as our research object, considering that the largest digital transactions in Islamic banks come from mobile banking. Mobile banking also provides banks various benefits to banks such as increased long-term profitability, cus- tomer loyalty, and financial inclusion. The objective of this study is to observe the determinant factor by using the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and …

Financial Innovation And Restriction Hypothesis In The Banking Industry: Evidence From Asean- 5, Yosman Bustaman, Viverita Viverita, Margaretha Tp Lingga, Antonius P. Siahaan
The Indonesian Capital Market Review
This study investigates the financial innovation impact on bank market power in ASEAN banking from 2008 to 2018. It uses income diversification as a representative of financial innovation. The im- pact of countries’ development of financial innovation on market power is measured by the number of ATM, internet, and cellular phone users. The data panel regression model reveals that diversified banks may enjoy higher market power. This result rejects the banking restriction activity hypothesis, which states that a bank that diversifies its income stream results in increased competition. A higher number of available ATMs and more internet users lowers the …

Voices From The Field: Brexit, Citizenship And Agricultural Labour, Richard Yarwood, Gina Kallis, Leonie Boland
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Drawing on a case-study of Cornwall in the South-West of England, this paper has three main aims. First, it seeks to listen to the voices of migrant workers and, in doing so, learn more about their experiences of moving to, and working in, the British countryside. Second, it evaluates the impact of Brexit on their lives and, in particular, how it influences their decision to work in the UK or elsewhere. Finally, consideration is given to the significance of citizenship to their lives, both as a formal contract with the EU and as a lived experience.

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences
Plastics and microplastics have been quantified and characterised at disposal sites of abandoned fishing boats and along the high-water line (HWL) of a fish landing centre in Chellanam, India. Fibreglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) made a greater contribution to the plastic pool at the disposal sites (~ 4.5 n m−2 and 18 g m−2) than the HWL (~ 0.25 n m−2 and < 1 g m−2) and was an abundant component of the microplastic pool at the former. Infrared analysis of micro-sized FRPs revealed various resins (e.g., alkyd, polyester, epoxy), while X-ray fluorescence analysis of the painted surfaces of meso-sized FRPs returned variable concentrations of copper and lead. Concentrations of Pb were high enough to contaminate sand up to ~400 mg kg−1. The relatively high density of FRP and its association with glass fibres and metal-bearing paints results in particles with potentially very different fates and toxicities to more “conventional” (non-composite) thermoplastics.
The African Continental Free Trade Area Negotiations On Rules Of Origin For The Cotton, Textiles And Apparel Sector: A ‘Developmental Regionalism’ Perspective, Faizel Ismail
Journal of African Trade
During the first half of 2022, African trade negotiators of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) were locked in discussions on the appropriate Rules of Origin (RoO) on the cotton, textiles and apparel sectors. Rules of origin are generally utilized as a trade tool to prevent the transshipment of goods from a third country into the preferential trade area. This paper argues that there are different academic and policy approaches to establishing the RoO. On the one hand, policymakers can adopt a narrow trade perspective prioritising the objective of increasing trade efficiency and reducing trade costs for manufacturers. On …

Journal of African Trade
This paper assesses the prospects of AfCFTA – whose implementation commenced in January 2021 – in boosting intra-African trade in services. We use the PPML estimator of the gravity model on bilateral services trade data for total and eight categories of services in 49 African countries spanning from 1995-2019. For our first objective, we assess the determinants of services trade, specifically the degree of complementarity between trade in goods and trade in services. The second objective establishes the role of trade facilitation on trade in services within Africa. We find that goods complement services, particularly total, transport, construction, Other Business …
