The Impact Of Participation In Career And Technical Education (Cte) On High School Graduation, College-Going Status, And Entry Into The Workforce, Paul Wambugu

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This study examined the relationship between high school students' participation in Career and Technical Education (CTE) and three postsecondary student outcomes using the High School Longitudinal Study of 2009 (HSLS:09). CTE participation was measured by the number of Carnegie credits earned in CTE. Three student outcomes were analyzed: on-time high school graduation, college enrollment, and workforce entry. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analyses, and multivariate logistic regression models were estimated while controlling for socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, sex, disability status, and academic performance indicators. Results indicated that CTE concentrators who earned 3 or more Carnegie credits in CTE had higher odds of graduating …

The Politics Of Rcra Criminal Enforcement, Joshua Ozymy, Melissa Jarrell Ozymy

UC Law Environmental Journal

Violations of federal environmental laws governing hazardous and solid wastes are typically remedied via civil methods, except in the case of crimes involving significant harm and culpable conduct, which can merit criminal prosecution. With historically varied commitments to environmental enforcement, we would generally expect substantive increases in prosecutions and penalties for these crimes under Democratic, as opposed to Republican presidents, but very little is known about the criminal enforcement of hazardous and solid waste crimes generally or how they vary under different partisan regimes. Through content analysis of 2,728 criminal prosecutions resulting from U.S. EPA criminal investigations, 1983-2021, we select …

Data Center Cooling Water Discharge: Assessing Environmental Transparency And Information Gaps, Katherine Kim May 2026

Data Center Cooling Water Discharge: Assessing Environmental Transparency And Information Gaps, Katherine Kim

UC Law Environmental Journal

As society’s demand for more network storage and advanced generative artificial intelligence systems increases, industries are rushing to deploy more data centers. This rapid growth of data centers has led to increased concern regarding the burden that data centers place on energy and water resources. Potable water intake and energy consumption are two well-established issues related to data centers, given that both water and electricity are necessary to run and cool equipment within data centers. As a result, data centers are developing and implementing new cooling systems that recycle water within their systems, limit evaporation, or do not rely on …

Ecocide In Palestine: A Call For A New Criminal Designation For Environmental Crimes, Carley A. Bomrad May 2026

Ecocide In Palestine: A Call For A New Criminal Designation For Environmental Crimes, Carley A. Bomrad

UC Law Environmental Journal

Gaza has frequently been the target of environmental damage from Israel. Dating back to its immigration to Palestine, Israel has impacted Palestine’s water systems, destroyed its natural landscape, and forcibly changed much of the landscape through invasive species. This environmental harm is only worsened by the repeated conflict in the region, which has damaged infrastructure and water systems and caused contamination of air, water, and soil. Gaza was already struggling with these environmental concerns, coupled with its susceptibility to climate change, when the conflict with Israel intensified in October 2023. All progress that was being made to strengthen Gaza’s infrastructure …

Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Possess: Mapping A Potential Second Amendment Challenge To 18 U.S. Code § 922(G)(6), Emil Zakarian May 2026

Don't Ask, Don't Tell, Don't Possess: Mapping A Potential Second Amendment Challenge To 18 U.S. Code § 922(G)(6), Emil Zakarian

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

For decades, the United States military discharged LGBTQ+ service members based on their sexual orientation, often assigning discharge characterizations that carry enduring legal consequences. One overlooked consequence arises under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(6), which prohibits individuals discharged "under dishonorable conditions" from possessing firearms. Although this provision has received limited judicial scrutiny, the Supreme Court's decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass'n v. Bruen calls its constitutionality into question by requiring that modern firearm regulations be consistent with the Nation's historical tradition of regulation.

This Note argues that § 922(g)(6) is constitutionally vulnerable as applied to veterans discharged solely …

It's In The Money: The Independent Federal Reserve, Kathrynne E. Curtis May 2026

It's In The Money: The Independent Federal Reserve, Kathrynne E. Curtis

Duke Journal of Constitutional Law & Public Policy Sidebar

The case at the heart of the current controversy involves the President's firing of a Federal Reserve Governor against a backdrop of crumbling precedent. The backbone of administrative agency independence, Humphrey's Executor, awaits the Supreme Court's judgment. Therefore, distinguishing the Federal Reserve—responsible for controlling monetary policy and setting interest rates—has never been more pressing. This Note argues that the Federal Reserve can be meaningfully distinguished on a historical basis, as the Court suggests in Trump v. Wilcox, by reference to its family tree: the First and Second National Banks. Precedent and the fallout from lapses in the early …

Flood Education In Lewisburg, Ellie Torrisi, Emily Cook, Hanna Mozayeni

Final Reports in ENST 411: Environmental Community Projects

In partnership with Debra Sulai and Lewisburg Neighborhoods, the goal of this project is to build flood resilience and education in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.  Lewisburg is located in a high-risk flood zone due to its proximity to the Susquehanna River, Miller Run, Buffalo Creek, and Limestone (Bull) Run. The Borough has experienced significant flooding throughout its history, most notably in 1972, when Tropical Storm Agnes devastated the town. Renters which comprise 65% of Borough residents, are less likely to be aware of flood risk. The goals of this project were to help increase awareness of flood risk, encourage residents and businesses …

Influence Of Semantic Richness On Word Form Learning In Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Mckenzie Scoppa, Sara Benham, Allison Gladfelter, Amanda Steeb, Lisa Goffman May 2026

Influence Of Semantic Richness On Word Form Learning In Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Mckenzie Scoppa, Sara Benham, Allison Gladfelter, Amanda Steeb, Lisa Goffman

CISLL Publications

Purpose:

Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) show a word form learning deficit, characterized by inaccurate and variable productions of novel words. We investigated whether, when a novel word form is introduced, incremental exposure to either a sparse visual referent or a relatively semantically rich story influences the phonetic accuracy and the phonological and articulatory variability of production in children with DLD and their typically developing (TD) peers.

Method:

Thirty-six preschoolers (18 DLD, 18 TD) aged 4;1–5;11 (years;months) were exposed to six novel words, two in each of three semantic cue conditions: no cues, sparse cues (visual referent), and rich …

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

A detailed experimental and computational study of the diastereoselectivity of cyclic sulfone synthesis by reaction of Rongalite with doubly electrophilic dienones is presented. Computational methods, including density functional theory, conformational search methods, and internal reaction coordinate methods, have been used to rationalize the diastereoselectivity of the reaction by transition-state modeling, and showcases the conformational subtleties of sulfur-containing rings. Extension of the original reaction to double intermolecular additions is also demonstrated along with a comparative study of Rongalite with the reactivity of other readily available sulfinate nucleophiles using competition and exchange experiments.

The Risk Of Bpa In B Lymphocyte-Mediated Autoimmunity, Mario J. Palacios May 2026

The Risk Of Bpa In B Lymphocyte-Mediated Autoimmunity, Mario J. Palacios

Senior Honors Theses

Autoimmune disorders disproportionately affect females, a bias largely attributed to estrogen's modulation of B lymphocyte development and tolerance. Bisphenol A (BPA), a common plastic monomer, shows estrogenic activity and acts as an endocrine disruptor and epigenetic modifier. This thesis examines how BPA may increase autoimmune risk by mimicking estrogen such that it can excite estrogen receptors which rescue autoreactive B lymphocytes from apoptosis. While direct research linking BPA to B lymphocyte-mediated autoimmunity is limited, understanding BPA’s course of action in B lymphocytes is critical for addressing the rising prevalence of autoimmune diseases and its possible link to the increased and …

Effects Of Recurving Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones On Downstream Ridges Over Pacific-Western North America, Xiaoyu Bai, Dmitri A. Kalashnikov, Paul Loikith, Siiri Bigalke, Alex Mitchell, Mingfang Ting, Lance F. Bosart, Deepti Singh

Geography Faculty Publications and Presentations

Recurving tropical cyclones (TC) in the Western North Pacific can affect the atmospheric circulation over Pacific‐Western North America (PWNA) via interactions with the midlatitude circulation. Using reanalysis and tropical cyclone best‐track data, we examine how recurving TCs that make extratropical transition modulate 500‐hPa ridge characteristics over PWNA during the peak (June‐September) and late (October–December) seasons. TCs recurving at lower latitudes are associated with more intense and poleward‐centered ridges relative to TCs recurving at higher latitudes, and TCs that recurve farther west are associated with relatively westward‐centered ridges. Characteristics of the prevailing midlatitude flow such as its amplitude and positioning relative …

The Impact Of Employment On Sense Of Belonging And Metacognitive Awareness: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Undergraduate Students’ Mathematical Performance, Erin Ryan May 2026

The Impact Of Employment On Sense Of Belonging And Metacognitive Awareness: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Undergraduate Students’ Mathematical Performance, Erin Ryan

Theses

This study investigated how employment intensity affects two critical factors for academic success: a student’s sense of belonging and their metacognitive awareness (the ability to monitor and manage their own learning). Using a mixed-methods approach at the Rochester Institute of Technology, we analyzed survey data through multi-level modeling and conducted qualitative interviews to capture the personal experiences of employed students. Results reveal that students working off-campus for more than eleven hours a week showed significantly lower sense of belonging and metacognitive awareness scores than unemployed students. However, on-campus employment did not show the same effect. Both quantitative and qualitative results …

Geopolitical Chessboard: How Vietnam Shapes American-Chinese Competition, Kiet H. Lê, Hiep X. Trần May 2026

Geopolitical Chessboard: How Vietnam Shapes American-Chinese Competition, Kiet H. Lê, Hiep X. Trần

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

Vietnam’s geostrategic position—bordering China and commanding key South China Sea maritime routes—makes it a pivotal actor in shaping great-power competition in Southeast Asia. This article argues that the United States should support Vietnam’s neutrality and strategic autonomy as a means of countering Chinese influence. Unlike prior studies that portray regional states as passive players, this analysis highlights Vietnam’s active role in influencing regional dynamics. Through comparative analysis with the Philippines, using historical case studies, geographic assessments, and policy reviews, the article offers practical insights for military and policy practitioners on how geography shapes alliance formation and strategic competition.

Key Themes In Sino-American History, David J. Lorenzo, Ian Murphy May 2026

Key Themes In Sino-American History, David J. Lorenzo, Ian Murphy

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article examines how historical narratives shape the messaging of the Chinese Communist Party and the People’s Republic of China, particularly regarding Sino-American relations. It identifies three key historical themes—trade, discriminatory policies, and Taiwan—that are frequently invoked in China’s statements and information campaigns. By contextualizing these themes, the article argues that military and national security professionals need a deeper understanding of Sino-American history to interpret China’s messaging correctly and counter its influence effectively. The article advocates for the integration of Sino-American historical content into professional military education curricula to enhance strategic awareness and policy formulation.

An Overdue Message: Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates Among Black Residents Of Massachusetts, Lauren R. Ritterband May 2026

An Overdue Message: Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates Among Black Residents Of Massachusetts, Lauren R. Ritterband

Capstones

Colorectal cancer is widely understood as a potentially devastating diagnosis. Late-stage diagnosis portends a high likelihood of morbidity and mortality, in stark contrast to survival rates for patients whose cancer is diagnosed when localized. Early detection through screening is therefore of critical importance. Black residents of Massachusetts have a higher incidence of colorectal cancer than white residents and are more likely to be diagnosed at stage four. Lower screening rates amongst Black residents represent one of multiple factors leading to worse morbidity and mortality from colorectal cancer. Despite clear recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force [USPSTF] that all …
