Early-Term Abortion Bans And Sex Selection After Dobbs V Jackson, William Jergins, Xin Liang Brown May 2026

Early-Term Abortion Bans And Sex Selection After Dobbs V Jackson, William Jergins, Xin Liang Brown

Faculty Scholarship

Following the 2022 US Supreme Court decision Dobbs v Jackson, many states adopted early-term abortion (ETA) bans that prohibit abortions before the age of viability and often before sex determination is technologically feasible. We analyze the effect of ETA bans on the sex ratio at birth among first-generation Chinese, Korean, and Indian (CKI) immigrants using difference-in-differences and triple differences methodolo- gies. While our estimates across higher parity children sometimes indicate a decrease in the sex ratio at birth, they are also generally small and statistically insignificant, which is consistent with continued access to sex selection under ETA bans. In contrast, …

Psychological Science Faculty Publications

Trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms are well-documented health disparities in Latinx migrants, explaining a diverse array of physical and mental health complaints as well as role limitations for both youth and adults. Few studies have examined the influence of the migration journey on PTS in Latinx migrants. We examined the added effect of migration-related predictors, above and beyond general trauma exposure, of PTS in two samples of Latinx migrants with the broad aim of uncovering unique predictors of PTS in this high-risk population. Both studies investigated predictors of posttraumatic distress using information collected about individuals’ demographics (e.g., age, …

Whose Voices Are Heard In Music Curriculum Development?: A Comparative Study Of Germany, Ireland Andlithuania, Karla Louise Stolle, Rūta Girdzijauskiené, Lorraine O'Connell

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

This article explores whose voices shape music curriculum development in Germany, Ireland, and Lithuania. Drawing on document analysis and comparative policy review, it investigates whose voices are recognised, consulted, or silenced in national musiccurriculum-making. Curriculum development in each country is examined through three interconnected lenses: historical development, the processes of music curriculum design, and the structures of decision-making, while also considering how stakeholder voices are represented or marginalised within these frameworks. Findings show that all three systems rely on expert-led curriculum design framed by competency-based outcomes, yet differ in how they structure participation. Ireland employs the most open consultative model, …

Reining It In: From Reflexive To Intentional Instructor Self-Disclosure, Rona Miles, Alla Chavarga, Chelsea Blaney May 2026

Reining It In: From Reflexive To Intentional Instructor Self-Disclosure, Rona Miles, Alla Chavarga, Chelsea Blaney

Essays in Education

Instructor self-disclosure is often promoted as a means of humanizing the classroom environment and improving learning outcomes. Though disclosure has the potential to be highly beneficial, it also carries a risk to students and learning that is often overlooked. This paper presents a point of departure perspective that instructor self-disclosure should be approached with far greater caution than most educators consider. We argue that disclosures should occur only when they are justified with a clear pedagogical purpose. Casual or spontaneous disclosures, by contrast, carry sufficient potential for unintended harm such that their risks outweigh presumed benefits to classroom rapport and …

Liquid Fire Accelerants' Effect On Blood Detectability, Genniltza Ramirez May 2026

Liquid Fire Accelerants' Effect On Blood Detectability, Genniltza Ramirez

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Five liquid fire accelerants were studied in their effects on blood detection in attempts to yield presumptive accelerant indicators to benefit fire scene investigators. The experiment involved burning different accelerant types via a 1:1 pig blood and accelerant ratio on cloth squares in trials of three, and then presumptively testing for blood using luminol. Luminol was selected for its sensitivity, subjectivity, and previous use in arson fire and thermal studies. For this study, accelerants were determined to have positive presumptive blood detection if detectable by camera for documentation. Presumptive blood detection of the accelerants resulted in: paint thinner with detection …

Understanding Behavioral And Representational Divergences Of Humans And Machines, Thomas Lasman Botch May 2026

Understanding Behavioral And Representational Divergences Of Humans And Machines, Thomas Lasman Botch

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Human behavior and cognition are strikingly variable: people differ from one another in their preferences and abilities, and even from themselves across situations. Yet this diversity arises from common neural machinery shaped by the complex environments humans inhabit. A central objective of cognitive neuroscience is to understand how this varied experience emerges from interactions between brains, agents, and environments. In this dissertation, I argue that comparing behavior and neural computation across humans, artificial systems, and contexts is essential for understanding the flexibility of human cognition. Across three chapters, I use this comparative approach to examine how the rich, multimodal contexts …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Background and objective – In 2019, the EAT-Lancet Commission on Healthy Diets from Sustainable Food Systems proposed the EAT-Lancet planetary health diet as a universal reference dietary pattern aimed at promoting human health while minimizing environmental degradation. However, epidemiological evidence regarding the association between adherence to the EAT-Lancet diet and the risk of heart failure (HF), particularly among individuals with cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic syndrome (CKMs) stages 0–3, remains limited. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the associations between adherence to the EAT-Lancet dietary pattern, its individual dietary components, and the risk of HF among individuals at CKMs stages 0–3. Materials and methods …

Foaming Properties And Structural Characterization Of Wheat Germ Albumin-Galacto-Oligosaccharide Covalent Complexes, Zhang Gensheng, Su Wenwen, Huang Xinyu, Du Yinan, Na Zhiguo, Fei Yingmin

Food and Machinery

[Objective] To improve the foaming properties of wheat germ albumin (WGA). [Methods] WGA was modified by wet glycosylation with galacto-oligosaccharides (GOS). The foaming capacity and foam stability of the wheat germ albumin-galacto-oligosaccharide covalent complex (WGA-GOS) were investigated, and its structure was characterized. [Results] Compared with WGA, the foaming capacity and foam stability of the WGA-GOS increased by 41.7% and 7.9%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, circular dichroism, intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analyses showed that the introduction of GOS altered the spatial structure of WGA, confirming the formation of covalent bonds between WGA and GOS. After modification, the …

Nobiletin Improves Organismal Health By Regulating Circadian Rhythms : Absorption, Mechanisms, And Delivery Strategies, Zhang Mengling, Han Lingxian, Zhao Chan, Liang Zengenni May 2026

Nobiletin Improves Organismal Health By Regulating Circadian Rhythms : Absorption, Mechanisms, And Delivery Strategies, Zhang Mengling, Han Lingxian, Zhao Chan, Liang Zengenni

Food and Machinery

Nobiletin, a hexamethoxyflavone unique to citrus peels, exhibits activity in regulating circadian rhythms. Characterized by a low molecular weight, it can cross the blood-brain barrier and demonstrates various biological functions, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular protective, and anticancer effects. However, limitations such as its low water solubility, high crystallinity, and poor stability hinder its nutritional and functional performance in food applications. Therefore, this review summarizes the in vivo absorption of nobiletin, its penetration through the blood-brain barrier, and the biotransformation processes of its active metabolites. Furthermore, this review discusses the regulatory effects on the central clock and peripheral clocks, as well …
