Assessment Of Buildings' Energy-Saving Strategies Resilience To Climate Change: The Case Of Mediterranean Climate, Aya S. Mohamed, Bakr M. Gomaa, Alaa Eldin N. Sarhan
HBRC Journal
The Earth's climate is changing, and projections indicate that global warming will continue throughout this century, leading to increased occurrences of extreme temperatures. This raises critical questions about the performance and resilience of different energy-saving design strategies in buildings under future climatic conditions. To address this, the present study investigates the impact of passive design strategies, including building orientation, window-to-wall ratio, south and east/west shading devices, and thermal insulation on a prototype building's energy performance across four timeframes: 2002, 2020, 2050, and 2080, using validated computer-based thermal simulations. The results indicate that individual strategies vary significantly in their effectiveness, with …

Public Water System Compliance Assessment Framework: Evidence From Mississippi Infrastructure Vulnerability, Jason R. Barrett, Brian Blank, John Wallace
Public Water System Compliance Assessment Framework: Evidence From Mississippi Infrastructure Vulnerability, Jason R. Barrett, Brian Blank, John Wallace
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
Regulatory non-compliance among public water systems poses a direct threat to public health, so we develop and apply a compliance assessment framework for state-level data from the Mississippi State Department of Health in order to aid public water systems in updating infrastructure to improve water quality. The framework evaluates public water system compliance across financial, managerial, and technical indicators, producing a composite score to support targeted interventions and data-driven resource allocation. Analyzing 1,107 systems, we identify a tiered structure of deficiencies, ranging from critically non-compliant rural utilities and mobile home parks to mid-range deficient municipal systems, and highlight the 15 …

An Introduction To Forest Management And Its Long-Term Linkages To Water Resources, John W. Groninger, Karl W. J. Williard
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The management of forest-based land uses and water resources largely complement one another. Formal research where vegetation versus water-focused resources intersect has been limited primarily to assessing short-term impacts of intensive forest harvesting operations on water quality or watershed discharge. Outside of harvesting, foresters and watershed managers are generally aware that changes in forest structure or evolving management protocols that play out on multi-decadal scales also impact water resources. However, few studies have addressed these in ways that may influence proactive management decision making. Recent changes in water resources and forest management protocols, driven by forces as diverse as urbanization, …

Background:
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) in adolescents is commonly treated with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). Treatment response is typically assessed every 4-6 weeks after initiating pharmacotherapy, and medication adjustments may be made if the initial regimen is ineffective. This standard-of-care delay can prolong or exacerbate symptom burden and functional impairment. Early prediction of treatment response could support more timely and personalized medication management in adolescents with MDD.
Objectives/Goal:
To develop and evaluate multimodal machine-learning models for early prediction of SSRI treatment response in adolescents with MDD, assessing the predictive value of clinical, wearable, and proteomic features both individually and …

A Structured Approach To Requirements Gathering, Kevin Wooldridge
Discovery Day - Daytona Beach
Requirements gathering is a fundamental step in the systems engineering lifecycle, shaping the success of space missions. This research focuses on refining the requirements development process through a structured methodology, using Project COMET—a University Nanosatellite Program (UNP) mission—as a case study. While Project COMET encompasses various design and operational challenges, this study is centered specifically on improving requirement identification, analysis, and validation for small satellite development. The research employs a three-stage workshop-based approach. The first stage involves functional decomposition, breaking down mission objectives into system-level needs and identifying key constraints. The second stage explores structured problem-framing techniques to enhance requirement …
