General Anesthesia Utilization And Referral Patterns In Pediatric Dental Patients, Bethany Castro, Hannah Shelton, Neena Patel, Robin Onikul, Jenna Sparks, Amy Burleson May 2026

General Anesthesia Utilization And Referral Patterns In Pediatric Dental Patients, Bethany Castro, Hannah Shelton, Neena Patel, Robin Onikul, Jenna Sparks, Amy Burleson

Research Showcase

Problem Statement/Question: Pediatric dental patients requiring dental treatment under general anesthesia at Children’s Mercy Hospital are frequently referred to external surgical settings due to long surgical wait times. The long wait times create barriers to care, delays treatment completion, and affects both healthy and medically complex patients.

Background/Project Intent (Aim Statement): There is a need to better understand the general anesthesia needs, referral patterns, and patient characteristics in a pediatric dental clinic to identify opportunities to expand internal surgical capacity and improve access to care.

Methods (include PDSA cycles):

Plan: Define GA demand by identifying pediatric dental patients referred for …

5-Week-Old Male Presenting With Severe Anemia And Coagulopathy: A Case Report, Anna E. Davis, Michael Silvey May 2026

5-Week-Old Male Presenting With Severe Anemia And Coagulopathy: A Case Report, Anna E. Davis, Michael Silvey

Research Showcase

Background: Vitamin K deficiency can present as bleeding in infants due to the inability to produce clotting factors needed for sufficient hemostasis. Newborns have sterile gut microbiomes and do not absorb large amounts of vitamin K. Additionally, vitamin K is transferred poorly via the placenta, leading to limited vitamin K stores.

Objective: To describe an infant presenting with severe anemia and shock from bleeding after a common procedure because of vitamin K deficiency.

Methods: Single case report results

Results: 5-week-old term male presented to the emergency department (ED) in respiratory distress. Infant was born at home and did not receive …

Implementation Of A Nebulized Tranexamic Acid Protocol For Pediatric Post-Tonsillectomy Hemorrhage: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Blake A. Welker, Elie Khalifee, Kyle Swingerman, Andrea Nguyen, Dovan Khalifee, John Dahl, Janelle Noel-Macdonnell, Meghan Tracy, Elie Khalifee May 2026

Implementation Of A Nebulized Tranexamic Acid Protocol For Pediatric Post-Tonsillectomy Hemorrhage: A Quality Improvement Initiative, Blake A. Welker, Elie Khalifee, Kyle Swingerman, Andrea Nguyen, Dovan Khalifee, John Dahl, Janelle Noel-Macdonnell, Meghan Tracy, Elie Khalifee

Research Showcase

Problem Statement/Question: Will a standardized nebulized TXA protocol reduce the need for surgical control of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage without increasing adverse clinical outcomes?

Background/Project Intent (Aim Statement): Emerging evidence suggests that tranexamic acid (TXA), a widely used antifibrinolytic agent, may be effective in the management of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH). We hypothesized that initiation of a standardized nebulized TXA protocol would reduce the need for surgical control of bleeding without increasing adverse clinical outcomes.

Methods (include PDSA cycles): This quality improvement (QI) project included patients < 18 who underwent extracapsular tonsillectomy and subsequently presented with PTH. Three cohorts were analyzed: a pre-intervention group (January 2020-June 2022), a non-standardized TXA phase following departmental review of emerging evidence (PDSA cycle 1; July 2022- December 2023), and a standardized nebulized TXA protocol phase (PDSA cycle 2; January 2024-July 2025). The primary outcome was surgical intervention for PTH. Balancing measures included hospital length of stay, blood product transfusions, 30-day readmissions, and TXA-attributable complications. Data was analyzed using statistical process control methods.

Results: A total of 501 patients were included (median age 7.2 years). Rates of surgical control decreased …

Adapting And Promoting Tourism For Children In Venice And The Lagoon Islands: A Comparative Analysis Of Food-Related Discourse Strategies In English And In Italian, Daniela Cesiri Prof. May 2026

Adapting And Promoting Tourism For Children In Venice And The Lagoon Islands: A Comparative Analysis Of Food-Related Discourse Strategies In English And In Italian, Daniela Cesiri Prof.

International Journal of Islands Research

According to the latest available version of the Annual Tourism Survey drafted by the City of Venice, in 2023, 12,628,079 tourists visited Venice and the Lagoon Islands (Bettiol & Marini, 2025). This survey does not provide data on the age groups of these visitors, but they are available in the previous version of the same Survey (Bianchetto & Marini, 2022), which reports that 29% of tourists were in the 46-71 age group. Therefore, we can presume that, excluding the older age groups, quite a large proportion of visitors is likely composed of young tourists and families with children. This study …

Book Review: Through The Brazilian Streets: The Migration Of East African Athletes To Brazil, Joao Paulo Melleiro Malagutti, Fernando Augusto Starepravo May 2026

Book Review: Through The Brazilian Streets: The Migration Of East African Athletes To Brazil, Joao Paulo Melleiro Malagutti, Fernando Augusto Starepravo

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

This review examines the book Through the Brazilian Streets: The Migration of East African Athletes to Brazil (Rojo, 2024), which analyzes the migratory processes of African road-running athletes competing in Brazilian races. Situated within the field of the Sociology of Sport, the book combines theoretical discussion on globalization and migration with empirical research based on interviews and documentary sources. The review highlights the analytical framework proposed by the author, which examines sports migration through cultural, political, economic, and personal dimensions. Particular attention is given to the study’s focus on migration flows between regions of the Global South, a perspective that …

How Licensing Compromised The Library, Aaron Perzanowski May 2026

How Licensing Compromised The Library, Aaron Perzanowski

Seattle University Law Review Online

Public libraries are besieged on multiple fronts: spiraling costs, budget cuts, book bans, patron privacy risks, inaccessible digital exclusives, embargoed titles, and unstable collections—not the mention a general decline in reading coupled with an upswing in reliance on artificial intelligence. No single development can explain all of the many challenges facing libraries today. But this Article argues that the shift from library-owned print collections to licensed digital ones is an overlooked throughline that has contributed to this constellation of challenges in underappreciated ways. For centuries, the first sale doctrine gave libraries broad autonomy over what they acquired, preserved, and lent. …

The Library Of Congress’S Essential Role In Digital Preservation: Reconceiving Mandatory Deposit After Valancourt, Dave Hansen May 2026

The Library Of Congress’S Essential Role In Digital Preservation: Reconceiving Mandatory Deposit After Valancourt, Dave Hansen

Seattle University Law Review Online

As the published record shifts to digital formats, the mechanisms that have ensured long-term preservation are breaking down. Most libraries acquire digital materials through licensing agreements that prohibit preservation copying, format migration, and interlibrary loan—contractually overriding the exceptions Congress enacted in the Copyright Act. The Library of Congress occupies a unique position: Through statutory deposit under 17 U.S.C. §§ 407 and 408, it collects copyrighted works pursuant to federal law rather than license agreements, and deposited copies become federal property under § 704, free from contractual restrictions. This Article examines how the Library’s deposit authority can be strengthened after the …
