Prioritizing Indigenous Participation And Compensation In Research, Amanda Sabin Feb 2024

Prioritizing Indigenous Participation And Compensation In Research, Amanda Sabin

Journal of Critical Global Issues

Throughout history, the dynamic between colonial entities and indigenous groups has been characterized by exploitation and power imbalance. Indigenous knowledge has the potential to positively impact the world, through medicinal breakthroughs, radical approaches to sustainability, cultural heritage, systems of learning and adaptation, and more. Particularly in the context of research, fields like anthropology, botany and pharmacology serve to benefit from indigenous knowledge, but these interactions cannot continue to be based on extraction at the cost of indigenous communities. This work will discuss the future of relationships between researchers and indigenous communities; how this power dynamic must be transformed into an …

Examination Of The Delphi Method For Establishing A Quantitative Literacy Framework In Undergraduate Mathematics Course, Emily Elrod, Joo Young Park Feb 2024

Examination Of The Delphi Method For Establishing A Quantitative Literacy Framework In Undergraduate Mathematics Course, Emily Elrod, Joo Young Park

Numeracy

The increased relevancy and importance of quantitative literacy (QL) have called for educational reform in undergraduate mathematics course offerings. However, lack of clear guidelines has led to wide variability in the content and outcomes of math courses meant to address QL. Therefore, having an expert consensus regarding content and outcomes for an undergraduate mathematics course focusing on QL would advance the quantitative literacy initiative in higher education. The authors propose the Delphi Method to aid in developing a framework based on expert opinions. The authors explain the Method and suggest the result of this process should yield a research-based framework …

Use Of The Grazing Animal In Forage Breeding, J H. Bouton, C S. Hoveland, R N. Gates Feb 2024

Use Of The Grazing Animal In Forage Breeding, J H. Bouton, C S. Hoveland, R N. Gates

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objective of these studies was to determine, in the context of a forage breeding program, the effect of cattle grazing on survival of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Different cultivars of each species were compared in grazed and ungrazed areas. Results consistently demonstrated that grazing reduced plant stands when compared to ungrazed conditions for each species tested. In alfalfa, however, cultivars developed for grazing tolerance showed much better grazing survival. Infection with the fungal endophyte, Acremonium coenophialum Morgan-Jones & Gams, likewise substantially increased grazing survival in …

Selection For Nitrogen Use Efficiency In Perennial Ryegrass Using Hydroponics, E N. Van Loo, A.J. P. Van Wijk, O Dolstra, H.J. P. Marvin, C.H. A. Snijders Feb 2024

Selection For Nitrogen Use Efficiency In Perennial Ryegrass Using Hydroponics, E N. Van Loo, A.J. P. Van Wijk, O Dolstra, H.J. P. Marvin, C.H. A. Snijders

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A selection method was tested for improving nitrogen use efficiency of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) using a hydroponics system that controls the plant nitrogen concentration. Divergent selection for plant production, leaf area increase and dry matter distribution in six segregating populations under limiting nitrogen supply resulted in differences between offspring of upward and downward selections larger than 20 % in most characteristics. Moderately high realized heritabilities were found for some characteristics (up to 0.88). It is concluded that early selection for nitrogen use efficiency is feasible using this hydroponics system.

Development Of Red Clover With High Levels Of Resistance To Root-Knot Nematodes, K H. Quesenberry, R A. Dunn, D E. Moon Feb 2024

Development Of Red Clover With High Levels Of Resistance To Root-Knot Nematodes, K H. Quesenberry, R A. Dunn, D E. Moon

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.), is grown in many areas of the world, but production in subtropical regions may be limited by susceptibility to root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) (RKN). Selection for early vigor in RKN infested soils resulted in moderate RKN tolerance in ‘Cherokee’. However, improved RKN resistance in red clover was needed. Seven additional cycles of greenhouse selection using Cherokee as a base population developed a population (FLMR7) with high RKN resistance. When FLMR7 was infested with M. arenaria, M. hapla, M. incognita, or M. javanica, numbers of galls and egg masses …

Evaluating White Clover For Resistance To Cylindrocladium Root Rot, D S. Wofford, A Amaya Feb 2024

Evaluating White Clover For Resistance To Cylindrocladium Root Rot, D S. Wofford, A Amaya

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A rapid screening technique was developed for use in evaluating white clover (Trifolium repens L.) for resistance to Cylindrocladium root rot incited by Cylindrocladium crotalariae. Culture plates of the fungus were evaluated for number of infective propagules after four weeks of growth on potato dextrose agar, and no differences were detected among plates. Seedlings of ‘Osceola’ white clover were exposed in the greenhouse to four levels of inoculum over a six-week period, with resistance based on percent survival of uninoculated controls. It was shown that suspending 1 culture plate in 100ml of water and rating plants four weeks …

Differential Energy Allocation Among 15 New Guineagrass (Panicum Maximum Jacq.) Hybrids, J A. Usberti Jr, R Usberti, R S. Paterniani

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The main aim of this research work was to determine trends of energy allocation among newly developed guineagrass (Panicum maximum Jacq) hybrids, ranging from very-early to late-flowering genotypes. Besides the flowering cycle, eight phenological and two seed quality traits were scored in a greenhouse randomized complete block experiment including plant height (PH), reproductive tiller number/overall tiller number (RTN/OTN), panicle number/reproductive tiller (PN/RT), leaf length (LL), leaf width (LW), panicle length (PL), fresh weight (FW), dry weight (DW), number of seeds/gram (NS/G) and seed sample physical purity (SPP). Very-early and early-flowering hybrids consistently showed the highest correlations values between flowering …

Effect Of Milk Yield, Sward Height And Concentrate Supplementation Level On Herbage Intake And Grazing Behaviour Of Set-Stocked Dairy Cattle In Spring, R Pulido, J D. Leaver

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

An experiment was carried out in spring over 42 days, with 48 multiparous Holstein Friesian cows, to examine the interrelationship of milk yield level, sward height and concentrate level. Two initial milk yield groups of 21.3 and 35.5 kg/day, two range of compressed sward heights of 3 to 5 cm, and 7 to 9 cm , and three concentrate levels of 0 and 6 kg/day and ad libitum were evaluated in a factorial design. Multiple regression analyses were carried out relating intake and behavioural dependent variables to the independent variables initial milk yield (IMY), sward height (SH) and concentrate intake …

Modeling Intake Of Grazing Cows Fed Complementary Feeds, D R. Buckmaster, L A. Holden, L D. Muller, R H. Mohtar Feb 2024

Modeling Intake Of Grazing Cows Fed Complementary Feeds, D R. Buckmaster, L A. Holden, L D. Muller, R H. Mohtar

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

A model suitable for predicting intake for grazing or non-grazing dairy cows is presented. The model integrates the potentially intake limiting factors of physical fill, physiological energy demand, wet mass, herbage availability, herbage cover, and grazing time. Integration of these factors with a simple set of linear ration balancing constraints yields a model suitable for predicting supplemental feed requirements as well as potential animal production from a grazed land. The model is semi-theoretical, being descriptive in structure, but containing empirical relationships.

Bird Friendly Beef: Exploring The Impacts Of Regenerative Forage Production, B. Rigley, J. Gilley, Aem Johnson Feb 2024

Bird Friendly Beef: Exploring The Impacts Of Regenerative Forage Production, B. Rigley, J. Gilley, Aem Johnson

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

In the eastern US, managed hayfields and pasturelands represent a significant portion of remaining available grassland bird habitat, hosting several declining species including the eastern meadowlark (Sturnella magna) and the grasshopper sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum). However, these working landscapes have deteriorated in their ability to support grassland birds in recent decades due to more frequent and early hay cuttings and intensive grazing. Since the conservation of grassland birds is inextricably linked to agricultural systems, for conservation to be effective, land management must aim to benefit both producers and birds. Regenerative agriculture is an emerging approach that incorporates …

The performance of six grass-white clover mixtures were evaluated in winter cold zone of Eastern Anatolia. In combination with white clover, ryegrass (Lolium perenne L) cocksfoot, (Dactylis glomerata L) and smooth brome (Bromus inermis Leyss) were used in double and triple plant mixtures. Average DM production ranged from 7.5 to 10 t/ha , with no significant differences observed among the mixed swards. DM production of all mixed swards significantly varied between cutting periods and years. A gradual decrease in DM production was observed both from the first to forth cut and from the first to third year. …

The Role Of Leguminous Browse Plants In A Cool Mediterranean Enviornment, P A. Lane, R Reid, D Parsons Feb 2024

The Role Of Leguminous Browse Plants In A Cool Mediterranean Enviornment, P A. Lane, R Reid, D Parsons

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

There is considerable scope for improving the productivity and persistence of pasture systems, in the temperate low rainfall zones (< 550 mm annual rainfall) of Australia and New Zealand. Alternative pasture species, including leguminous browse plants, have potential to increase the diversity and stability of these pasture systems. The genus Dorycnium (canary clover), has previously been identified as containing a number of species with desirable forage and soil conservation characteristics. Preliminary investigations have indicated that at least two species, D. rectum and D. hirsutum, produce significant quantities of forage in the year of establishment and are palatable to sheep. It is proposed that these plants may provide a valuable source of forage on land which currently lacks productive and persistent pasture. Forage produced by these plants would be allowed …

Trifolium Species Germplasm From Western North America, K H. Qusenberry, N L. Taylor

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The genus Trifolium, which consists of about 230 species of annual and perennial legumes, has been divided into eight taxonomic sections. Approximately 50 species are native to western North American inter-mountain regions and the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. Prior to this research, about 30 of the Trifolium species from western North America were not represented in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS). Three germplasm collection expeditions in 1994 and 1995 collected about 140 accessions encompassing at least 44 species, including at least 25 species not previously available in the NPGS. Of these, nine were listed as …

Quality Evaluation Of Feed Resources At The Newly Reclaimed Area In Egypt, M K. Hathout, F Z. Swidan, M F. El-Sayes, H A. Eid

IGC Proceedings (1977-2023)

The objective of this study was to examine the productivity of Egyptian clover (Trifolium alexandrinum L.) interseeded with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) and alfalfa (Medicaga sativa L.). These species were planted in newly reclaimed land in Ismailia, Egypt under two fertilization systems; organic (OF) or chemical (CF) during winter season of (1994-1995) using a split plot design. Feeding quality of forages was evaluated by conducting digestibility trials with rams and feeding trials with growing lambs where forage was offered ad. libitum with 1% of LBW concentrate. Productivity data indicated that organic fertilization yielded significantly more DM. Chemical …
