Early Life Experiences As Later Life Predictors For Criminality: Examination Of Public Criminal Records., Juliana S. Bastien Mar 2024

Early Life Experiences As Later Life Predictors For Criminality: Examination Of Public Criminal Records., Juliana S. Bastien

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Crime's detrimental impact on society, victims, families, and the justice system is undeniable. Thus, identifying factors that contribute to the perpetration of crime is essential to reduce the public health impact of crime. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are frequently found in community samples and are consistently associated with physical, psychological, and behavioral consequences. Research suggests that negative childhood experiences contribute to maladaptive behaviors, including delinquency and perpetration of crime later in life (Perez et al., 2018). The present study's purpose is to identify specific childhood experiences associated with criminality. The data presented on criminality and ACEs was collected from recruited …

Clinical Research Faculty Publications

Through longitudinal analysis from the GLOWING cohort study, we examined the independent and joint relationships between couples’ eating behaviors and gestational weight gain (GWG). Pregnant persons (n = 218) and their non-pregnant partners (n = 157) completed an Eating Inventory. GWG was calculated as gestation weight at 36 weeks minus that at 10 weeks. General linear models were used to examine the relationships between GWG and the pregnant persons, non-pregnant partners, and couples (n = 137; mean of pregnant persons and non-pregnant partners) cognitive restraint (range 0–21), dietary disinhibition (range 0–18), and perceived hunger (range 0–14), with higher scores reflecting …

The Political Economy Of Laughter And Outrage, Genevieve Renard Painter Mar 2024

The Political Economy Of Laughter And Outrage, Genevieve Renard Painter

Dalhousie Law Journal

A bit uncomfortable. That is how it feels to be among dear friends but labelled professionally as an outsider. I have a law degree, a bar membership, and a PhD in Jurisprudence and Social Policy. I am a professor in a women’s studies department at Concordia University. At conference receptions, people respond breathlessly, “But they don’t have a law school at Concordia!?,” as though I am hearing confession in a gas station, or something as heretical. I teach legal history, international law, feminist legal theory, and constitutional law to undergraduates who are not in law school and mostly don’t want …

Making "Medical": How Psychedelics Are Becoming Legal In Canada, Agnieszka Doll

Dalhousie Law Journal

As legal restrictions loosen, psychedelic-assisted therapies are advancing at an unprecedented pace and scope in Canada and the US. Presented as a miracle cure for post-traumatic stress, depression, and other psychological disorders, psychedelics are being touted to treat post-pandemic mental health crises. In this paper, drawing on Science and Technology Studies, I ethnographically trace the ongoing process and practices involved in transforming illegal psychedelics into a regulated medicine in Canada, paying particular attention to regulatory pathways and the development of networks involved in psychedelic advocacy. Using these pathways as a methodological “sampling device,” I map the main actors, their mutual …

Access To Justice In The Nova Scotia Small Claims Court 1980-2022, William H. Charles

Dalhousie Law Journal

*This contribution has not been peer-reviewed.

In his latest research paper the author explores the extent or degree to which the Nova Scotia Small Claims Court achieves its declared purpose of providing the citizens of the province with what can accurately be described as a “People’s Court,” that is, a legal agency that would allow ordinary citizens to pursue their legal claims expeditiously and at a reasonable cost with a process that involved lawyers/adjudicators rather than judges. After a review and analysis of several thousand decisions by Nova Scotia Adjudicators/lawyers, the author concluded that the creators of the court had …

This article examines the relationship between legislative civility and legislative productivity in US state legislatures. The research employs data from the National Survey of State Legislative Lobbyists and from the State Policy Innovation and Diffusion (SPID) database. The former dataset is used to generate an overall civility index for each state as developed by Kettler et al. The SPID database allows one to measure the legislative productivity of a state legislature. Employing these data, negative binomial and Poisson regression models reveal that state legislatures rated as more civil by their own lobbyists produced significantly more pieces of noteworthy legislation than …

Reading A Global Landscape, John Berteaux Mar 2024

Reading A Global Landscape, John Berteaux

Comparative Civilizations Review

It seems a truism that while our grasp of the world is at best inconclusive, it is attended by a pressing desire to articulate the ultimate context in which our lives are set. Here, my remarks focus on the limits of our ability to explicate that context or landscape, suggesting that any attempt to de-confuse our world will be inherently inconclusive, indeterminate, and undefined. In other words, I want to encourage a little cognitive dissonance regarding our ability to make sense of the globe.

Perceived reactions to sharing of good news (capitalization), can have important implications for romantic relationships. Typically, when European Americans perceive that their partners respond in an active constructive (versus passive and/or destructive,) manner, they tend to perceive their partners as more responsive and report higher relationship quality. However, cross-cultural differences in norms can influence peoples’ preference for different capitalization responses and whether different capitalization responses convey partner responsiveness. In a combined sample of European Americans, East, and South Asians (N = 915), we investigated whether links among capitalization responses, perceived partner responsiveness, and relationship quality differed by culture. People who …

The primary goal of the Arkansas Cotton Variety Tests is to provide unbiased data regarding the agronomic performance of cotton varieties and advanced breeding lines in the major cotton-growing areas of Arkansas. This information helps seed companies establish marketing strategies and assists producers in choosing varieties to plant. These annual evaluations will then facilitate the inclusion of new, improved genetic material in Arkansas cotton production. Adaptation of varieties is determined by evaluating the lines at five University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture research sites (Manila, Keiser, Judd Hill, Marianna, and Rohwer). The 2023 tests at Keiser were adversely affected …

Scientists Explain The Underrepresentation Of Women In Physics Compared To Biology In Four National Contexts, Esther Chan, Di Di, Elaine Howard Ecklund Mar 2024

Scientists Explain The Underrepresentation Of Women In Physics Compared To Biology In Four National Contexts, Esther Chan, Di Di, Elaine Howard Ecklund

Sociology

Women are consistently underrepresented in physics when compared to biology. Yet how scientists themselves explain the causes of this underrepresentation is understudied outside the US context. In this research, we ask the following question: How do scientists in different national/regional contexts explain why there are fewer women in physics than biology? Using original survey data collected among academic biologists and physicists in the US (N = 1777), Italy (N = 1257), France (N = 648), and Taiwan (N = 780), we examine how scientists' social identities, social locations, and country context shape essentialist, individualist, and structural …

Threading A Decolonial Feminist Response To Covid-19: One Community Psychologist's Reflection On The Assemblages Of Violence, Jesica S. Fernandez

Ethnic Studies

To challenge and interrogate the assemblages of violence produced by racial capitalism, and exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, community psychologists must engage in a transdisciplinary critical ethically reflexive practice. In this reflexive essay, or first-person account, I offer a decolonial feminist response to COVID-19 that draws strength from the writings of three women of Color decolonial and postcolonial feminist thinkers: Gloria E. Anzaldúa, Sylvia Wynter, and Arundhati Roy. Through their writings I share my reflections on the sociopolitical moment associated with COVID-19. Of importance, I argue in support of engaging a decolonial feminist standpoint to understand the inequitable and dehumanizing …

An Argument For The Integration Of Black Psychology In Undergraduate Psychology Program, Kelsey D. Glass Mar 2024

An Argument For The Integration Of Black Psychology In Undergraduate Psychology Program, Kelsey D. Glass

University Honors Theses

When we think about the theories behind the foundation of American psychology, many European names come to mind (i.e. Freud, Erickson, Brofenbrenner etc.). This Euro-American mode of psychology has been the standard in American Undergraduate education since the founding of a formal psychological education in the U.S. but what about names like Wade Nobles, Joseph White, Na-im Akbar, or Linda James Myers? These forerunners of Black Psychology are elusive in the foundational education of current American Undergraduate programs due to longstanding racial bias in the field. This bias reflects the systemic racism that American culture was founded on. This paper …

Fuzzy Software Reliability And Optimal Release Policy With Log-Logistic Testing Effort: An Analysis, Seema Rani, Jitendra Kumar, N. Ahmad

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We will discuss a Software Reliability Growth Model (SRGM) using fuzzy and imperfect debugging environments; we integrate Log-Logistic (LL) Testing Effort Function (TEF) into fuzzy SRGMs. Estimation methods, such as Least Square and Maximum Likelihood, are used to obtain the value of Testing-Effort and SRGMs parameters. It is not always possible and is constantly required to quantify the exact value of parameters. Due to human conduct, the value of Testing-Effort and SRGM parameters cannot be exactly quantified. In this scenario, parameters are supposed to be vague or fuzzy. To make the software consistent, the developer needs to propose some quantity …

Utilization Of Caputo Fractional Derivative In Mhd Nanofluid Flow With Soret And Thermal Radiation Effects, Harshad Patel, Gopal Nanda

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In existence of heat diffusion and thermal radiation, an analytical equation is found for unsteady MHD flow past an exponentially accelerating vertical plate in optically thick water based nanofluid. The governing equations are made dimensionless by similarity transformation. A definition of Caputo fractional derivative is applied to generalize governing system of partial differential equations. Laplace transform techniques are applied and obtained the analytical solutions of proposed problems. For a physical point of view, numerical results are obtained using MATLAB software and presented via graphs. From the results, it is concluded that magnetic fields tend to reduce velocity. It is also …
