Leveraging Passively-Collected Wearable Accelerometry Data Coupled With Machine Learning To Longitudinally Detect And Predict Major Depressive Disorder, George D. Price
Leveraging Passively-Collected Wearable Accelerometry Data Coupled With Machine Learning To Longitudinally Detect And Predict Major Depressive Disorder, George D. Price
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating and heterogenous mental health disorder that is characterized by symptoms including low mood, issues with sleep, psychomotor difficulties, and fatigue. MDD affects one in twenty adults worldwide and has shown increased prevalence in the United States over the past twenty years. As such, efforts to effectively screen, diagnose, and treat MDD are paramount. However, to address these concerns, an increased understanding of an individual’s daily behavior is required, which is not adequately captured by infrequent clinical visits. One such method for consistent, longitudinal observation, passively-collected accelerometry, serves as an observational method for unobtrusively …

Linguistic And Cultural Barriers To Hispanic Immigrant Vaccination, Ruth Larson
Linguistic And Cultural Barriers To Hispanic Immigrant Vaccination, Ruth Larson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Though vaccines decrease incidence of their associated diseases, vaccination rates among Hispanics are lower than their White non-Hispanic counterparts for almost all vaccines. In this study, we identify linguistic and cultural barriers to vaccination of Hispanic Immigrants (HI). An electronic survey was administered among HI parents living in the United States. Using structural equation modeling, we found that a lower language barrier increases the trust in patient-physician relationship (+0.487) and increases HPV knowledge (+0.450). Mistrust because the health care was not in Spanish led to negative vaccine attitudes (-0.104), while trust due to a lower language barrier led to positive …

Objective.—Women with sexual assault (SA) histories report heavier and more frequent drinking. Consistent with the motivational model of alcohol use, women with SA histories may consume alcohol to both down-regulate negative emotions and up-regulate positive ones. The present event-level study used a Bayesian multilevel moderated mediation approach to examine the extent to which women’s alcohol use and intoxication was influenced by coping and enhancement drinking motives to down-regulate or up-regulate affect, respectively.
Method.—Women ages 21–30 were recruited from the community to participate in a larger study that included a 32-day daily diary assessment of affect, drinking motives, and …

Probit And Improved Probit Transform-Based Kernel Estimator For Copula Density, Fatimah Hashim Falhi, Munaf Yousif Hmood
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
Copula modeling is widely used in modern statistics. The boundary bias problem is one of the problems faced when estimating by nonparametric methods, as kernel estimators are the most common in nonparametric estimation. In this paper, the copula density function was estimated using the probit transformation nonparametric method to eliminate the boundary bias problem that suffers kernel estimators. Simulation was also employed for three nonparametric methods to estimate the copula density function and we proposed a new method that is better than the rest of the methods by five types of copulas with different sample sizes and different levels of …

Performance Classification For Lasso Weights With Penalized Logistic Regression For High-Dimensional Data, Afiaa Raheem Khudhair, Saja Mohammad Hussein
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
In high-dimensional data, classification performance is a crucial consideration. One method of interest is the penalized binary logistic regression. However, the Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) The Lasso method may face problems when the appropriate penalty for each coefficient is not determined. For this reason, different weights are used in weighted Lasso estimates to address this issue and improve classification performance. To overcome this limitation, we employ various Weighted Lasso Estimates, each with unique weight assignments, and compare their performance with our fifth proposed weight configuration. This application of Lasso weighting schemes aims to uncover the most effective approach …

Strategies For Effective Labor-Management Relationships In The Foodservice Industry, Nichola A. Hall
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The relationship between unions and management is particularly critical for food service firms, which rely heavily on unionized employees to meet operational needs. Food service managers are concerned with ineffective strategies for engaging with unions because managing these ineffective relationships jeopardizes employee retention and the firm's performance. Grounded in authentic leadership theory, the purpose of this qualitative multiple-case study was to explore strategies food service managers use to develop and maintain an effective union-management relationship for retaining unionized employees. The participants were six food service managers from three large food service firms who implemented success strategies to develop and maintain …

BACKGROUND: Proteasome inhibitors (PIs) are one of the most important classes of drugs for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM). However, almost all patients with MM develop PI resistance, resulting in therapeutic failure. Therefore, the mechanisms underlying PI resistance in MM require further investigation.
METHODS: We used several MM cell lines to establish PI-resistant MM cell lines. We performed RNA microarray and EccDNA-seq in MM cell lines and collected human primary MM samples to explore gene profiles. We evaluated the effect of MUC20 on cuproptosis of PI-resistant MM cells using Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP), Seahorse bioenergetic profiling and in vivo assay.

Sme Resilience In The Face Of Covid Disruption: A Conceptual Framework, Mahmoud Ahmad Mahmoud, Ahmed Mahmoud, Yousif Aftan Abdullah, Mahabub Musa Garba
Journal of Economics and Administrative Sciences
The effect of COVID-19 on firms’ operations has been the worst of any previous epidemic. The overall supply chains, corporate operations, and performance have all been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, making small and medium-sized organizations more susceptible. At the same time, a sizable body of research-based literature demonstrates the detrimental impact of disruptions on firms. There is a severe lack of literature on the effects of disruptions on performance among small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the elements that could increase their resistance to disruptions in sub-Saharan African economies. The research suggested that disruption absorption plays a moderating role …

Toward More Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy In Elementary Social Studies, Laura Delgado
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, elementary social studies instruction has significantly declined in recent decades, yet it holds valuable potential in allowing for spaces where the cultures and identities of our students can be centered and celebrated. Our educational systems are too often grounded in hegemonic ways of doing that are based around a dominant narrative that centers white, Christian, heteronormative values. Social studies instruction and its connected pedagogy have great potential to change that narrative. Following Mintrop’s cycle of inquiry model, this qualitative study looked at the experiences of elementary teachers as they undertook the implementation of a new social …
