Retention is the capacity to hold information in the mind. It is crucial for learning, especially in transferring knowledge to long-term memory. This study examines the impact of Graphic Organizers (G.Os) on information retention among students with intellectual disabilities (I.D.) at Guadalupe SPED Center in Cebu City, Philippines. Using purposive sampling, ten (10) students with I.D. enrolled in the upper-level SPED center were selected and divided equally into control and experimental groups. A pretest-posttest design, validated lesson plan with G.Os, assessment questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews were employed. Results show significant benefits of graphic organizers, including improved comprehension, enhanced memory retention, …

Modeling The Economic Growth Of The Philippines With Structural Change: A Case Of The Covid-19 Pandemic, Jacque Bon Isaac Aboy, Nelia Ereno, Ian Jay Serra
CNU Journal of Higher Education
The structural change brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic in the behavior of economic growth in the Philippines is not yet fully analyzed and understood. This paper answers whether the pandemic caused a regime switch in the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Philippines, and if it is cointegrated with the Peso-Dollar exchange rate, import, and the Philippine stock market, in the presence of a structural break. The period used is from the 1st quarter of 2012 until the 1st quarter of 2022. An ARDL model is then proposed that describes a linear relationship between the variables. Results from the …

Exploring The Factors That Influence K-12 Teachers’ Use Of Open Educational Resources, Yu-Chun Kuo, Yu-Tung Kuo, Hungwei Tseng
College of Education Departmental Research
The features of open educational resources (OERs) have the potential of enhancing teaching effectiveness and student learning experiences in K-12 education. Encouraging K-12 teachers to use OERs requires an understanding of the factors that have an influence on teachers’ decisions to adopt or use OERs in their teaching. In this regard, this study explored the factors related to how teachers perceived their use of OERs, including the perceived ease of use of OERs, perceived usefulness of OERs, intention to adopt OERs, attitudes, OER self-efficacy, and so on. The relationships of several proposed factors were explored. The participants were teachers from …
Hybrid Deloading Control Strategy In Mmc-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems For Enhanced Frequency Regulation, Jimiao Zhang, Jie Li
Hybrid Deloading Control Strategy In Mmc-Based Wind Energy Conversion Systems For Enhanced Frequency Regulation, Jimiao Zhang, Jie Li
Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering Departmental Research
The growing integration of renewable energy sources, especially offshore wind (OSW), is introducing frequency stability challenges to electric power grids. This paper presents a novel hybrid deloading control strategy that enables modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) to actively contribute to grid frequency regulation. This research investigates a permanent-magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based direct-drive configuration, sourced from the International Energy Agency’s (IEA’s) 15 MW reference turbine model. Specifically, phase-locked loop (PLL)-free grid-forming (GFM) control is employed via the grid-side converter (GSC), and DC-link voltage control is realized through the machine-side converter (MSC), both of which boost the energy …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Creating Sun Tsu: Instituting A Master’S Degree In Irregular Warfare, Robert Burrell, John Collision
GNSI Decision Briefs
In the words of Sun Tsu, arguably the father of irregular warfare, war is like water, and water has no constant form, and there are no constant conditions in war.i Nowhere in the history of U.S. military doctrine has conflict been described in this theoretical and inclusive way. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the U.S.’s preference for technological solutions, increased firepower, and lethality on the battlefield neglects to account for leveraging irregular and asymmetric forms of conflict to advance its interests and counter its adversaries. The Consortium to Study Irregular Warfare Act of 2021 addressed the gap …

We study a new population of extremely red objects (EROs) recently discovered by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) based on their NIRCam colors F277W − F444W > 1.5 mag. We find 37 EROs in the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science Survey (CEERS) field with F444W < 28 mag and photometric redshifts between 5 < z < 7, with median z = 6.9 − 1.6 + 1.0 . Surprisingly, despite their red long-wavelength colors, these EROs have blue short-wavelength colors (F150W − F200W ∼ 0 mag) indicative of bimodal spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with a red, steep slope in the rest-frame optical, and a blue, flat slope in the rest-frame UV. Moreover, all these EROs are unresolved, point-like sources in all NIRCam bands. We analyze the SEDs of eight of them with MIRI and NIRSpec observations using stellar population models and active galactic nucleus (AGN) templates. We find that dusty galaxies or obscured AGNs provide similarly good SED fits but different stellar properties: massive and dusty, log M ⋆ / M ⊙ ∼ 10 and A V ≳ 3 mag, or low mass and obscured, log M ⋆ / M ⊙ ∼ 7.5 and A V ∼ 0 mag, hosting an obscured quasi-stellar object (QSO). SED modeling does not favor either scenario, but their unresolved sizes are more suggestive of AGNs. If any EROs are confirmed to have log M ⋆ / M ⊙ ≳ 10.5, it would increase the pre-JWST number density at z > 7 by up to a factor ∼60. Similarly, if they are QSOs with luminosities in the L bol > 1045-46 erg s−1 range, their number would exceed that of bright blue QSOs by more than three orders of magnitude. Additional photometry at mid-infrared wavelengths will reveal the true nature of the red continuum emission …

Increased Hif-2Α Activity In The Nucleus Pulposus Causes Intervertebral Disc Degeneration In The Aging Mouse Spine, Shira N Johnston, Maria Tsingas, Rahatul Ain, Ruteja A Barve, Makarand Risbud
Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers
Hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs) are essential to the homeostasis of hypoxic tissues. Although HIF-2α, is expressed in nucleus pulposus (NP) cells, consequences of elevated HIF-2 activity on disc health remains unknown. We expressed HIF-2α with proline to alanine substitutions (P405A; P531A) in the Oxygen-dependent degradation domain (HIF-2αdPA) in the NP tissue using an inducible, nucleus pulposus-specific K19CreERT allele to study HIF-2α function in the adult intervertebral disc. Expression of HIF-2α in NP impacted disc morphology, as evident from small but significantly higher scores of degeneration in NP of 24-month-old K19CreERT; HIF-2αdPA (K19-dPA) mice. Noteworthy, comparisons of grades …

The Complexities Of Using Digital Game-Based Learning For Writing Instruction: An Exploratory Multiple-Case Study Of Two Teachers, Sean D. Bowden
Dissertations
Digital game-based learning (DGBL) is an innovative learning approach for engaging and teaching students across various content areas. There is a shortfall in the extant literature on DGBL for writing instruction specifically. The purpose of this exploratory multiple-case study was to gain a greater understanding of (a) how teachers plan and deliver writing instruction using a DGBL approach, (b) how they evaluate the impact DGBL has on students’ writing, and (c) the shared experiences two teachers have with using DGBL for writing in two different contexts. Flow theory, activity theory, and TPACK comprised this study's theoretical foundation.

Ecological Drivers Of Plasticity And Parental Care In Poison Frogs, Olivia Brooks
Ecological Drivers Of Plasticity And Parental Care In Poison Frogs, Olivia Brooks
Theses and Dissertations
Parents increase their offspring fitness prospects by providing care, but at the cost of lost current or future reproductive opportunities. Parents often rear multiple offspring simultaneously, and because parents cannot supply unlimited care to their offspring, parents benefit from distributing resources non-randomly within a brood. Having access to information that helps inform allocation decisions can be valuable to parents, and parents may use a variety of information types that are either intrinsic or extrinsic to the offspring to help inform these decisions. Here, I explore the types of information that parents use when allocating resources within broods, and I explore …

We need to save the Arctic not because of the polar bears, and not because it is the most beautiful place in the world, but because our very survival depends upon it.—Lewis Gordon Pugh, as quoted in Mead (Citation2022) The Arctic is emerging as an increasingly relevant and rapidly changing region of the world. A changing climate has brought increased attention to the dynamic and strategic nature of the North, but the Arctic has always been a homeland to a variety of distinct cultures and a unique ecosystem. Arctic imaginaries of an untouched and wild North continue to flourish in …

Lc-Ms/Ms Reveals Hordeins Are Enriched In Brewers’ Spent Grain, Mitchell G. Nye-Wood, Michelle L. Colgrave
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Barley is commonly used in malting and brewing, and spent grain is repurposed for other foods. Barley contains gluten proteins called hordeins that cause intestinal damage and disease symptoms if eaten by people with celiac disease and related conditions. While the mashing process in brewing can partially hydrolyze immunogenic epitopes in hordeins, the immunogenic epitope load between the starting malt and spent grain has not been investigated. Herein, we quantified hordeins in commercially available spent grain and from matching malt. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and sandwich and competitive R5 ELISAs were used for quantification, revealing a higher abundance of gluten …

Over the past decades, various industries shifted from traditional materials such as glass and metals to thermoset polymers due to their excellent chemical resistance, thermal stability, reduced weight, and affordability. However, at the end of their life cycle, these highly crosslinked polymers end up as environmental pollutants due to their non-recyclability. To tackle this issue, researchers are exploring vitrimer-type polymers with recyclable qualities, supporting a circular economy and sustainable management of thermoset wastes. Ecologists and conservation biologists have become quite familiar with the concept of tipping points: abrupt changes in an ecosystem's state that occur after a period of relative stasis. Most of the familiar ecological examples of tipping points occur either because a once-stable state has lost stability, or the system has been subjected to a particularly large perturbation and transitions to an alternative stable state, distinct from the pre-perturbed state. A different class of tipping points, known as rate-induced tipping (or r-tipping) points, are likely present in many ecological communities but remain little known in the field. Rate-induced tipping occurs when …
