Improving Antihypertensive Medication Adherence Through Education And Follow- Up Phone Calls In A Primary Care Setting, Sarah Peterson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Hypertension affects nearly half of adults and significantly increases the risk of stroke and cardiovascular disease; however, poor medication adherence remains a primary barrier to effective blood pressure management. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to improve antihypertensive medication adherence among adult patients in a primary care setting. Guided by the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Quality Care, the project utilized a pre-test/post-test design at a private practice clinic. The sample included adults with a hypertensive diagnosis and active prescriptions. Medication adherence was defined as the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale (MMAS-8) scores, measured before and …

Closing The Gap: Integrating A Standardized Depression Screening In Primary Care, Cyndy Marie Oreas May 2026

Closing The Gap: Integrating A Standardized Depression Screening In Primary Care, Cyndy Marie Oreas

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Objective: The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project is to implement the routine use of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) screening instrument in the primary care setting to improve early diagnosis, treatment, and referrals to mental health.

Background: Depression is frequently underdiagnosed in primary care despite its significant impact on health outcomes. Inconsistent screening practices and a lack of standardized workflows contribute to missed opportunities for early identification and intervention. Routine PHQ-9 screening has been shown to improve detection and facilitate timely referral to behavioral health services.

Methods: A standardized PHQ-9 screening was implemented for adult patients aged 18 …

This project aims to decrease preoperative anxiety levels and increase satisfaction and feelings of preparedness in patients scheduled to undergo gynecologic-oncology-related procedures through the implementation of an evidence-based practice (EBP) informational video. The San Diego 8A’s EBP model was utilized to guide this project. Data was collected, anonymously, through online questionnaires which included the Anxiety Specific to Surgery Questionnaire (ASSQ) to assess anxiety levels and Likert-scale questions to assess satisfaction and feelings …

Implementation Of Symptom Management Standing Order Sets In An Ambulatory Palliative Care Clinic, Anna Manfreda May 2026

Implementation Of Symptom Management Standing Order Sets In An Ambulatory Palliative Care Clinic, Anna Manfreda

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Background: As outpatient palliative care expands, the need for timely, evidence-based symptom management has become increasingly critical. In many ambulatory settings, triage nurses are the first point of contact for patient symptom reporting; however, without standing orders, management may vary by provider availability and individual practice patterns, leading to potential treatment delays and inconsistencies in care from evidence-based recommendations.
Purpose: The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to improve the workflow and quality of gastrointestinal (GI) symptom management in an ambulatory palliative care clinic.
Framework: This project was guided by the Iowa Model Revised: Evidence-Based Practice to …

Enhancing Emergency Preparedness In California High Schools: A Policy Framework For Implementing Nata-Compliant Emergency Action Plans Through Multidisciplinary Task Forces, Jennifer Lu May 2026

Enhancing Emergency Preparedness In California High Schools: A Policy Framework For Implementing Nata-Compliant Emergency Action Plans Through Multidisciplinary Task Forces, Jennifer Lu

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Background: Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in young athletes, yet it is highly survival with proven measures: a structured emergency action plan (EAP), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training, and access to an automated external defibrillator (AED) within 3 minutes can raise survival rates to 90%. Despite this, high schools show inconsistent compliance, largely due to the lack of fragmented oversight and lack of standardized practices

Purpose of Project: This proposal advocates for multidisciplinary task forces to enforce venue-specific, National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA)-compliant EAPs across California high schools, with the goal of improving emergency response …

Text Message Delivery Of Pre-Procedural Recommendations Prior To Lip Augmentation With Hyaluronic Acid Filler: An Evidence-Based Pilot Project, Jenna De Jonge

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Patients seeking lip augmentation procedures commonly experience self-resolving soft-tissue complications such as swelling and bruising. There are many widely accepted pre-procedural recommendations available to help patients minimize the risk of these undesirable outcomes. At a Medical Aesthetics practice in Southern California, lip augmentation patients often arrived to their appointment non-adherent to pre-procedural recommendations that were available on the practice website. Text message delivery systems have been used to improve patient adherence to healthcare instructions across a variety of healthcare settings. To address this gap, I implemented text message delivery of pre-procedural recommendations to lip augmentation patients prior to their appointment. …

Perinatal Mental Health Screening And Care Among Those With Pregnancy Complications, Alison N Goulding, Terri L Fletcher, Emily S Miller

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Perinatal mental health conditions are common and, without effective treatment, can contribute to adverse maternal and child outcomes. In the United States, mental health conditions are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, contributing to over 20% of pregnancy-related deaths. This expert review aims to assess current literature and provide recommendations regarding mental health care in high-risk patients who experience pregnancy complications. Individuals experiencing pregnancy complications are at increased risk for perinatal mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, as compared to those with uncomplicated pregnancies. Despite this increased disease burden, there is limited research on …

The Impact Of Road Quality On Nearby House Prices, Michael Cary, Brad Humphreys May 2026

The Impact Of Road Quality On Nearby House Prices, Michael Cary, Brad Humphreys

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper estimates the impact of road quality on house prices in Hamilton County, Ohio, USA which includes the city of Cincinnati. We use a hedonic regression framework using road segment level international roughness index (IRI) data as a measure of road quality. We find that rougher roads decrease house prices, with a one standard deviation increase in road roughness from the sample mean decreasing house prices by 3.5%. This equates to a $6,700 decrease in the value of an average priced home in our sample, demonstrating the importance of road quality and maintenance for local economic development.

Supporting Nurse Practitioner Autonomy: A Policy Proposal To Advance Hospice Np Scope, Lauren Hochart May 2026

Supporting Nurse Practitioner Autonomy: A Policy Proposal To Advance Hospice Np Scope, Lauren Hochart

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) profession has achieved many advancements in its autonomy and scope of practice in the last 61 years since becoming a recognized advanced practice registered nursing role. However, some areas of healthcare still limit the NPs ability to practice autonomously even though it is within their scope of practice. This is notable in the subspecialty of hospice care with regards to certifying a terminal diagnosis as part of eligibility determination for a Medicare beneficiary to be able to receive covered hospice services. This health policy paper reviews current hospice regulations and provides evidence to support the benefits …

Exercise Prescription For Adults With Prediabetes In The Primary Care Clinic, Katherine W. Hall May 2026

Exercise Prescription For Adults With Prediabetes In The Primary Care Clinic, Katherine W. Hall

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Prediabetes affects approximately one in three adults in the United States, with an estimated 10% progressing to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) annually. Despite strong evidence supporting exercise as a first-line intervention to prevent disease progression, most patients in primary care settings do not receive structured physical activity counseling. This evidence-based project (EBP) aims to address this gap by implementing a standardized protocol to assess baseline physical activity levels and deliver individualized exercise prescriptions to adults with prediabetes in the primary care clinic.

Eligible participants, defined by HbA1c values between 5.70% and 6.49%, were identified during routine primary care visits …

Sleep Tight: A Sleep Hygiene Bundle For Adults To Improve Sleep Quality In A Skilled Nursing Facility, Meaghan Corbin

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Abstract

Nearly two thirds of skilled nursing facility (SNF) residents report poor sleep. Negative consequences of poor sleep are depressed mood, anxiety, pain, cognitive impairment, increased risk for dementia, fatigue, decreased concentration, and lower activity participation. A review of literature has shown that implementation of non-pharmacological sleep interventions can significantly improve sleep quality. The aim to screen SNF residents on current self-reported sleep quality and provide non-pharmacological sleep interventions. The evidence-based project utilized the 8 A’s Model. Using the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a resident with a score above 0, received the non-pharmacological sleep hygiene bundle: eye mask, earplugs, …

Improving Transition To Adult Care: Assessing Health Insurance Literacy In Adolescent Patients With Congenital Heart Disease, Kaitlyn V. Mudge

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

Background: With advances in surgery and medical management, 95% of children with congenital heart disease (CHD) survive into adulthood. Transition to adult care is an intricate process. Up to 60% of adolescents fail to follow through with cardiology care, facing three times the risk of needing emergency services. Only 25% of young adults with CHD knew of the need to change their care to an adult provider and to acquire health insurance as an adult. One barrier to successful transition is a lack of insurance coverage and limited insurance health literacy. Higher insurance literacy is associated with increased utilization …

Indonesian Tax Reform: A Never-Ending Dialectic, Charoline Cheisviyanny, Niki Lukviarman, Verni Juita, Suhanda Suhanda

BISNIS & BIROKRASI: Jurnal Ilmu Administrasi dan Organisasi

Indonesian tax reform has evolved through recurring cycles of institutional change, yet it continues to face persistent tensions among fiscal demands, administrative capacity, and taxpayer compliance. While existing tax reform studies predominantly examine reform outcomes in terms of revenue performance and compliance rates, limited attention has been given to the structural contradictions that shape reform trajectories over time. This study re-conceptualizes Indonesian tax reform as a dialectical process by applying a thesis–antithesis–synthesis framework to three major reform cycles since 1983. Using an interpretive qualitative design based on documentary reconstruction and illustrative interview evidence, the analysis demonstrates that each reform phase …

Landon’S Salieri: Myth-Busting, Stereotype-Making, And The Narratives Of Eighteenth-Century Music, Yuhan Tian

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

This paper reconsiders H. C. Robbins Landon’s writings on Antonio Salieri, focusing on 1791: Mozart’s Last Year, Mozart: The Golden Years, and Haydn: Chronicle and Works II. It starts from a basic observation: Landon is widely credited with dismantling the story that Salieri poisoned Mozart, yet his books also helped to fix another vivid image of Salieri—as “the arch-intriguer” at the Viennese court. How can the same author both clear away one myth and reinforce another kind of stereotype?

The paper combines close reading with straightforward source criticism and recent work on biography and life-writing. The first section …

Invisible Students, Visible Consequences: Leadership Under Fte Funding, Derek Bryant May 2026

Invisible Students, Visible Consequences: Leadership Under Fte Funding, Derek Bryant

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

The full-time equivalent (FTE) funding model used by the Virginia Community College System (VCCS) serves as a structural constraint that misaligns financial incentives with the missions of the 23 member institutions within it. This qualitative, descriptive phenomenological study, through interviews with system- and college-level leaders, found that this model underserves part-time, adult, and workforce students while simultaneously contributing to a resource instability that prioritizes enrollment over student success. The study concludes that any reform must require a redesigned funding model that first makes institutions whole, with a stable operational baseline of funding, by incorporating broader enrollment measures that better align …

Maximum Agency: Educator Engagement In The Ai Era, W Alex Foxworthy May 2026

Maximum Agency: Educator Engagement In The Ai Era, W Alex Foxworthy

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

The dominant narrative about AI in education emphasizes anxiety: jobs lost, skills devalued, futures foreclosed. But survey data reveals a more complex picture. Students and faculty who engage with AI tools see greater possibility and feel less threatened than those who avoid them. Engagement correlates with optimism. This essay argues that community college educators are uniquely positioned to bridge this gap and can play a key role in moving students from anxiety to agency by modeling engaged adaptation themselves. Yet faculty consistently report that lack of institutional support, not resistance, is the primary barrier to integration. Drawing on recent surveys …

From Access To Success: Addressing Barriers For Students With Disabilities In Higher Education, Melissa Wood May 2026

From Access To Success: Addressing Barriers For Students With Disabilities In Higher Education, Melissa Wood

Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges

Over the past several decades, enrollment of students with disabilities in higher education has steadily increased. However, disparities in retention and degree completion persist. Although federal laws such as the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act guarantee equal access, many students continue to encounter barriers that affect their academic experience. These challenges are often more pronounced in community colleges, which serve diverse populations and often operate with limited resources. This paper examines two key barriers and highlights best practices that institutions can implement to improve accessibility, strengthen support systems, and promote persistence and success for students with disabilities.
