Editor’S Note: The Coastal Business Journal’S Commitment To Coastal Communities, Mark Mitchell Jul 2024

Editor’S Note: The Coastal Business Journal’S Commitment To Coastal Communities, Mark Mitchell

The Coastal Business Journal

Approximately a third of the world’s population lives in a coastal region. While coastal communities comprise about 10% of the land mass of the contiguous United States (e.g., excluding Alaska and Hawaii), they are home to 40% of the U.S. population. From its inception, the Coastal Business Journal (CBJ) has sought to highlight research on issues pertaining to business administration and business development within coastal geographic regions. Looking forward, it is our desire to expand the availability of research pertaining to coastal communities in the pages of the CBJ. In the future, we hope researchers who conduct studies on coastal-related …

Decision Making By Expert Reviewers In Auditing, Anna J. Johnson-Snyder, Asligul Erkan-Barlow, U. Yeliz Eseryel, Brenda L. Killingsworth, April H. Reed

The Coastal Business Journal

This paper contributes to judgment and decision making and expertise development literature by identifying the types of review experiences that contribute to better decisions by auditors. Explicit consensus in decision-making is important because it makes the decision binding. Expert judgments on specific topics are expected to be in explicit consensus because experts are assumed to have similar expertise in decision making. Yet, this is often not the case in audit reviews. Further, the reviewers’ disagreements with the auditors’ work may damage the auditors’ professional reputation. We conducted a survey with 74 expert auditors with a minimum of five years of …

The following short-term financing services are analyzed: Auto title loans, payday loans, tax refund advances, pawn shops, and rent-to-own stores. The key findings reveal that NCSC residents, compared to residents of other states, tend to more frequently utilize pawn shops and rent-to-own stores, and less frequently utilize payday loans. Sinking In Sandy Dunes: A Case Study To Address Hr Staffing And Seasonal Workers, Arlise Mckinney, Nicholas D. Rhew

The Coastal Business Journal

One of the challenges for organizations operating in a predominant resort tourism industry is the seasonal nature of operations that can create staffing challenges and employee retention for sustainability. In this paper, we examine the challenges of a restaurant in the Grand Strand region of South Carolina experiencing some of the people management challenges inherent in the resort tourism industry. We present an instructor-developed case study of a restaurant for use as a pedagogical tool applicable in a variety of learning and training environments. The case highlights a fictional organization, Sandy Dunes, and is designed to engage learners in critical …

A Case Study For Enabling Autistic Students To Enter Best-Of-Class Career Programs In Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem), James Lawler

The Coastal Business Journal

Over 5.4 million adults in the United States are identified as having autism as measured by the autism spectrum. Given the diagnostic diversity among autistic students, a high number of post-secondary institutions fail to meet the personal and specific needs of these students. This research advances an advocacy model for best-of-class post-secondary programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in order to better serve autistic students. Application of the model allows autistic students, their families, and organizations advocating for them to better evaluate the features of post-secondary education programs in STEM. Ultimately, the model can be a guide to …

Obesity And Health Alarms: Is It Only About Food Deserts?, Rubina Vohra Jul 2024

Obesity And Health Alarms: Is It Only About Food Deserts?, Rubina Vohra

The Coastal Business Journal

ABSTRACT

Society is well aware of the health impacts and societal costs of obesity. This study examines the variables that best predict obesity such as population, poverty, household income, education, unemployment, uninsured, and being a single parent. Simply ensuring and improving access to healthy food is an insufficient public policy. This study uses both descriptive and analytical methods and utilizes a comparison of a cross-section data set. The results show that access to healthy food had little impact on the obesity rate. Rather, a respondent’s race, poverty, and education are more significant predictors of obesity.

“We Love You In America”: Spiro Agnew, The Media, And The Building Of An Emotional Community, Charles Holden Jul 2024

“We Love You In America”: Spiro Agnew, The Media, And The Building Of An Emotional Community, Charles Holden

Journal of 20th Century Media History

Spiro Agnew, Richard Nixon’s often-mocked Vice President, played a critical role in building the right-wing, populist base of white working- and middle-class supporters for the Republican party. Early in his vice presidency, Agnew used his access to media to cultivate mistrust of the same media, focusing especially on television political analysis, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. In speech after speech he used the same criticisms of the media to attack other parts of American society the administration viewed as the opposition. Rather than persuading these voters on policy positions, Agnew went straight for the heart. Much to …

Karl Freund’S Hollywood Aesthetic: Maintaining Visual Style Within The Studio System, Casey Walker Jul 2024

Karl Freund’S Hollywood Aesthetic: Maintaining Visual Style Within The Studio System, Casey Walker

Journal of 20th Century Media History

This article explores the distinct cinematographic style of classical Hollywood cinematographer (and briefly director) Karl Freund throughout his Hollywood studio film career (1930-1950). After leaving the German studio UFA, Freund spent two decades in the Hollywood studio system, known for its comprehensible narrative and visual style and hierarchical mode of production, which were considered constraints to the emergence of a unique visual style from any one filmmaker. Previous studies on cinematographers’ authorship and poetics focus almost universally on Gregg Toland, a cinematographer who largely worked outside of the big Hollywood studios. However, very little scholarship exists on cinematographers such as …

"Pearls And All": June Cleaver, Symbol And Myth, Judy Kutulas

Journal of 20th Century Media History

June Cleaver, the fictional matriarch of the Cleaver family on the 1950s/60s sitcom Leave it to Beaver has become a powerful symbol in American society, representing a particular version of motherhood that can be read as desirable or old-fashioned. How June became a symbol as well as a myth is what this article is about, a blend of series’ particulars, the continued willingness of the actor who played June, Barbara Billingsley, to play into the stereotype of June, the changing perspectives of boomers who watched her, and the changing possibilities of American women’s lives.

The Commercial Aspects Of Public-Private Partnership (Ppp) Contracts In Qatari Law, Prof. Dr. Faten Hawa

BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية

This research paper examines the characteristics of commercial aspects of public-private partnership (PPP) contracts under Qatari law. The study highlights the importance of emphasizing the commercial aspects of partnership contracts to incentivize private sector engagement in Qatar's economic development, enhance investment opportunities, and understand Qatar's legislative approach in excluding these contracts from administrative laws. The study concludes that Qatari legislation focuses on the investment and economic dimensions of public-private partnership contracts, framing them as economic tools and as commercial contracts. Moreover, Qatar's third national development strategy underscores governance over partnership projects as fundamental to the business environment in Qatar, further …

The "Arab" Legislative System ... A Reality That Requires Review! A Critical Reading In Philosophy And Rooting, Prof. Mohamed Elkhatib Jul 2024

The "Arab" Legislative System ... A Reality That Requires Review! A Critical Reading In Philosophy And Rooting, Prof. Mohamed Elkhatib

BAU Journal - Journal of Legal Studies - مجلة الدراسات القانونية

With an open intellectual vision and a critical reading of the reality of the “Arab” legislative system, the research attempts to clarify the identity of this system, and the extent of its ability to be our expression. Stressing that we are facing a reality that, as much as we superficially believe it deserves praise, it actually requires review. Basing this on a major axiom, which is that this legislative innovation in what is known today as: the “legislative pyramid” of sources of law in Arab legislation, is, in our belief, the cause that has deviated our legislative system from its …

Improving First Case On-Time Starts In The Operating Room, Lojy Koshy

Master's Projects and Capstones

Problem: A timely first-case start in the operating room (OR) is critical for optimizing departmental efficiency and resource utilization. Persistent delays in first-case start times disrupt the surgical schedule, leading to suboptimal OR use, diminished patient and staff satisfaction, reduced operational efficiency, and decreased overall productivity. Addressing these delays is essential to enhance the quality and efficiency of surgical services.

Context: The microsystem for this project is a Northern California operating room that handles a high volume of surgical procedures. There are 10 operating rooms, and the goal is to have 70% of first cases in the operating room on …
