The online realm has witnessed a surge in the buying and selling of data, prompting the emergence of dedicated data marketplaces. These platforms cater to servers (sellers), enabling them to set prices for access to their data, and clients (buyers), who can subsequently purchase these data, thereby streamlining and facilitating such transactions. However, the current data market is primarily confronted with the following issues. Firstly, they fail to protect client privacy, presupposing that clients submit their queries in plaintext. Secondly, these models are susceptible to being impacted by malicious client behavior, for example, enabling clients to potentially engage in arbitrage …

In Federated Learning (FL), clients share gradients with a central server while keeping their data local. However, malicious servers could deliberately manipulate the models to reconstruct clients' data from shared gradients, posing significant privacy risks. Although such Active Gradient Leakage Attacks (AGLAs) have been widely studied, they suffer from two severe limitations: 1) coverage: no existing AGLAs can reconstruct all samples in a batch from the shared gradients; 2) stealthiness: no existing AGLAs can evade principled checks of clients. In this paper, we address these limitations with two core contributions. First, we introduce a new theoretical analysis approach, which uniformly …

Graphite Particles Modified By Zno Atomic Layer Deposition For Li-Ion Battery Anodes, Ahmad Helaley, Han Yu, Xinhua Liang

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Graphite, with a modest specific capacity of 372 mA h g−1, is a stable material for lithium-ion battery anodes. However, its capacity is inadequate to meet the growing power demands because the formation of an irregular solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) can result in unstable performance. In this research, we used a few cycles of atomic layer deposition (ALD) to deposit ZnO on graphite particles as an anode with improved electrochemical stability. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that ZnO was in the form of nanoparticles due to the inert surface properties of graphite and only a few cycles of ALD. Electrochemical characterization …

Founder Worship, Effective Altruism, And Corporate Governance, Jennifer S. Fan, Xuan-Thao Nguyen Jan 2025

Founder Worship, Effective Altruism, And Corporate Governance, Jennifer S. Fan, Xuan-Thao Nguyen

Law Faculty Research and Publications

Founders are the heart of any startup. Oftentimes, they are given considerable latitude in managing a company, particularly if they are hailed as a visionary founder in a pathbreaking new industry. Additionally, it is assumed that underpinning their actions is the desire to do good. Unfortunately, sometimes this leads to what we term founder worship where the promise of the founder and the innovation may lead to perverse outcomes because too much control is ceded to the founder and there is a lack (or sometimes complete absence of) corporate governance. When unlimited control is coupled with "do gooderism," which in …
