Faculty Scholarship
Background: The American Heart Association recently defined cardio-kidney-metabolic (CKM) syndrome as the intersection between metabolic, renal, and cardiovascular disease. Understanding the contemporary estimates of CKM related mortality in the US is essential for developing targeted public interventions. Methods: We analyzed state-level and county-level CKM-associated all-cause mortality data (2010-2019) from the CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (WONDER). Median and interquartile (IQR) age-adjusted mortality rates (aaMR) per 100,000 were reported and linked with a multi-component metric for social deprivation: the Social Deprivation Index (SDI: range 0 - 100) grouped as: I: 0 – 25, II: 26 – 50, III: 51 …

Asian Journal of Physical Therapy
Background: Openpose is a motion capture system that uses artificial intelligence. This study aimed to verify the reliability and validity of motion angular velocity using Openpose in trunk flexion-extension movements (TFEM) and compare Openpose with methods that use accelerometers and marker measurements. Methods: Fifty healthy young participants were included in the study. The TFEM tasks were performed. Motion analyses were performed using accelerometers, markers, and the Openpose software. To examine the reliability and validity of the angular velocity of motion, we calculated intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) (1,1) and ICC (1,3) for each maximum flexion and extension angular velocity. …

A Spiritual Pilgrimage To A Celtic Homeland: Searching And Internalising In Grief From Stone To Sea. A Collaborative Autoethnography, Laura Lewis, Eunice Gorman
A Spiritual Pilgrimage To A Celtic Homeland: Searching And Internalising In Grief From Stone To Sea. A Collaborative Autoethnography, Laura Lewis, Eunice Gorman
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
This collaborative autoethnography poses the research question; How does one’s experience of grief and anticipatory grief mobilise pilgrimage journeys to ancestral homelands? Two theoretical constructs found in the academic literature related to grief and loss are explored for their influence on both authors’ respective pilgrimage journeys to the Celtic ancestral homeland of their deceased and ‘vanishing’ fathers in Wales and Ireland. The theoretical constructs explored through an extensive review of paternal personal documents of one author (Laura), revealed thematic ideas that could be best understood through an elaboration of the academic literature(s) that inform understandings of grief and bereavement. These …

Are Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) And Resilience Associated With Breastfeeding Rates And Neonatal Growth?, Lily Zheng, Krystal Hunter, Hsiao-Wei M. Banks, Leslie Abraham, Alla Kushnir
Cooper Rowan Medical Journal
Background: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have shown to have a negative impact on health outcomes. There is evidence of how negative childhood events adversely affect self-esteem in adulthood. Not only do ACEs have an impact on one's own life, but maternal ACEs have shown to have consequences on infants’ development as well, indicating a negative intergenerational impact.
Objectives: To analyze the relationship between maternal ACEs on infant outcomes, breastfeeding adherence, and maternal self-perception
Design/Methods: Between 2020 and 2023, 120 mother-infant pairs from a New Jersey urban hospital were approached between their 2nd trimester and the 2-month well …

The Anti-Inflammatory Effects Of Perioperative Dexamethasone Administration And The Relationship To Pain: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Tyler Klecha, Ryan Gericke, Usmaan Al-Shehab, Jaime Dougherty, Glen Atlas
Cooper Rowan Medical Journal
Introduction: Post-surgical inflammation is a common adverse event that can have detrimental effects on the recovery phase for patients. Commonly associated with pain severity, inflammation can make the management of postoperative pain difficult. Of the multiple inflammatory molecules that can be found in an inflammatory response, interleukin 6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are two of the most commonly assayed biomarkers of inflammation. Dexamethasone (DEX), with its anti-inflammatory properties, is thought to reduce IL-6 and CRP. It thus may reduce pain when administered perioperatively. In this review, we assessed the anti-inflammatory effects of DEX and the relationship of such …

Active Learning In Medical Education: A Brief Overview Of Its Benefits, Varuneshwar Parsad, Jeevan Divakaran
School of Medicine Publications
The traditional lecture-based model of medical education is increasingly being replaced by active learning methodologies that focus on interactive, student-centered approaches to enhance knowledge retention, clinical reasoning, and professional development. This brief review highlights the benefits of active learning techniques such as problem-based learning (PBL), team-based learning (TBL), case-based learning (CBL), and simulation-based learning (SBL) in medical education. These active learning methods promote a deeper understanding and application of medical knowledge, improve clinical reasoning, increase student engagement and motivation, and foster the development of interpersonal skills essential for healthcare practice. Furthermore, active learning bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and …

Altering Rules: The New Frontier For Corporate Governance, Gabriel Rauterberg, Sarath Sanga
Altering Rules: The New Frontier For Corporate Governance, Gabriel Rauterberg, Sarath Sanga
Law & Economics Working Papers
Corporate law has taken a contractarian turn. Shareholders are increasingly contracting around its foundational rules—statutory rights, the fiduciary duty of loyalty, even the central role of the board—and Delaware courts are increasingly enforcing these contracts. In the one case where they did not, the legislature swiftly overruled the decision and adopted a new statutory provision permitting boards to completely cede their powers to a shareholder by contract. These developments have sparked a polarized debate, with some calling for a return to mandatory rules, while others push for total contractual freedom.
We argue, however, that the solution lies neither in rigid …
Do Schools Have The Capacity To Provide Free Meals To Every Student?, Michah W. Rothbart, Jeehee Han, Zac Reeves
Do Schools Have The Capacity To Provide Free Meals To Every Student?, Michah W. Rothbart, Jeehee Han, Zac Reeves
Population Health Research Brief Series
Over 20 million students nationally attend schools that offer universal free meals (UFM). Advocates argue that UFM increases school meal participation, decreases stigma, and reduces administrative costs for schools. Similarly, Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC) distributes breakfast to students after the bell, which increases participation and potentially decreases stigma. However, student participation remains far from universal. This brief summarizes the findings from a study using data from New York City (NYC) public schools between 2011-2014 to analyze the effectiveness of UFM and BIC at increasing student school breakfast and lunch participation in capacity-constrained schools. The authors find that both UFM …

Failure Of The Farm Bill Process In 2023—A Perspective From Social Media Activity, Roman Keeney, Nicole Olynk Widmar, Austin Berenda
Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications
In September 2023, the current farm bill was allowed to expire. This marked the fourth consecutive farm bill to see its authorization lapse before replacement legislation was signed into law. The failure in 2023 is notable as significant trade and covid shocks revealed needed reforms in farm and food safety nets. We develop a unique online and social media dataset and metrics to examine 2023 online activity to understand drivers of online farm bill discussion and implications for the future of the traditional farm bill political coalition. These findings echo the increasing concern about future farm bills amid a broadening …
